- 2022 BMW iX X Drive 50 review by The Straight Pipes. The iX is putting down 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque from a 105kwh battery and 2 electric motors. At $117,960 CAD, would you take it over the Tesla Model X or Rivian?

At 14:48 it almost looks like u guys were on 3 wheels around that corner lol
The rich people buying this don't care that it is ugly, they just care that it stands out and looks recognzieable as a new and expensive BMW. Cars can both be ugly and look expensive at the same time.
Ugly outside, luxury inside. Imo, people should avoid this at all cost. We may not know when they will get a great design outside, but when it happens, this one will lose lot of its value on design alone(not to mention battery 500km).
You guys didnt even review the roof.. which is one of the top coolest features on this car.. wth?
Electric car reviews feels like a Tech review for me. Car reviewers used to talk about the driving part, but now it's mostly about the technology and charging.
Yes, because there is little to differentiate them any more on the road an X hp motor drives like any other X hp motor. They are all heavy with the weight low and between the axles so all handle well with basic uncomplicated suspension.
. I don't think people are as obsessed with the tech as much as the reviewers think, but they will have sod all to talk about when they all drive the same, other than the speed of the infotainment screen and feel of the buttons.
The future is boring
@@nealp885 exactly
Give me an ICE manual all day!
@@nealp885 Good news BEVs can't replace Gas/Hydrogen vehicles 100% as the resources to make them are very rare on Earth compaired to just steel and alike... Not to even mention Batteries are consumable... So with a few bans on new Gas vehicle sells coming up which would take most if not all the supply of the extractors can give to the car industry... The furture is very fun indeed as we'll have Gas/Hydrgen ICE, Hydrogen Fuel cell and BEVs and maybe werid combos as BEVs can't psoible meet demind of the car industry.
its been that way for ICE cars a while now. especially ever since the gtr and 911 from a long time ago. so much content on their ECU's, software correcting driving, explanations of mech tech like LSD's and such. its not like ICE car reviews were just VROOM VROOM and done.
tbh ICE cars are pretty much electric. it's why we can have 700hp cars. turn it all off and so many people will probably end up crashing.
The interior on this really strikes me as cool design and aesthetic wise. the door seat controls, the wood, the way the dash screen is mounted, the seats, its done like a cool modern art piece more so than a car. Not necessarily what i personally want in a car, but its really fun to look at
So basically like a Mercedes?
Shame the front looks like Mickey Rooney doing the Mr. Yunioshi face
knowing what the current condition of the non tesla charging network is important, thank you for discussing it in your videos, great work as always
In my state it’s equally lacking 😂
@@supreme5998 Even if you have the same number of chargers, CCS chargers are not reliable at all, but Superchargers are rock solid every time.
@@voltspc9394 yeah we have one supercharger. it really doesn't matter how reliable the charger is if there isn't enough of them.
@@supreme5998 I mean that really doesn’t matter, where I am we only have two of them, and it’s a pretty big city, it’s not like you go there every day. In the ownership of my car I’ve went there two times I didn’t need to, I was just checking out. The important part is having enough of them every couple hundred miles so you can get to where you’re going on major highways
@@voltspc9394 Well, the issues in my city are different. The issue is that much of the population live in apartment complexes that don't have enough outlets. Home charging for daily driving is the issue. Maybe in a suburb where people live in homes that can charge overnight it wouldn't matter as much for a charging network but my city doesn't have that infrastructure. We have about 800,000 people on the island of Oahu and only 1 supercharger. Hawaii also has one of the highest electricity costs. Electric cars are just not viable yet for many here.
Just wanted to come here to say how much I appreciate the intro music, especially with the last couple EV reviews. Love how you always work to match up the vibe of the music with the car you are reviewing, sets the tone wonderfully.
I love the charging updates! This is real life in Ontario and I'm sure it's no better in a lot of other places. You guys are just speaking the truth about these cars and the drawbacks that exist for them. If nobody speaks up about this, the charging infrastructure will continue to lag behind like and 80s turbo car.
Just trying to fix these problems for everyone that we shouldn't even be having in 2022! 🙏
@@TheStraightPipes y'all the MVPs
It's not just in the north. It's everywhere. I've seen it in Houston, Austin, Dallas, New Orleans, Panama Beach, South Padre Island and everywhere in between. It is more common to find a charging place that is either full or broken than one with an open space. THAT is the absolute worse thing about EVs.
Should go to Liberal Government for federal chargers mandate and Fords government EV initiative
@@lordcorgi6481 lol ur user name. I like it 👍🏼
I appreciate the constant updates on the charging stuff. Clearly that's a massive factor in being choosing a vehicle. So thank you.
I cannot wait for all of these automakers to get the "electric cars have to re-invent every control" thing out of their systems.
We really can't lose physical buttons. If I want to turn up the heat in my shitty old ass car I just reach down and turn the heat dial. I don't even have to look at it cause I can just feel it with my hand and it takes like half a second. We can't be messing around with touch displays while driving. Worse is to look "cool" the screen has all sorts of long transition fade in and out effects that make it look nice but also make it feel "slow" to use.
I'm a game developer and we learned this lesson in the game industry a long time ago. Menu transitions need to be fast or else things feel extremely muddy to the end user. Like 100ms fades should be the maximum IMO.
Don’t you understand? With every system draining the battery, naturally the Solution would be to make everything run via massive, energy intensive HD touch displays that stretch from the steering wheel onto the driver seat of the next car over
The interior looks like an art piece. A piece of art that is beautiful to look at as long as you don't need to touch it. Ultimately, usability issues aside, the charging network issue you guys brought up is the main killer. Tesla will still maintain a large chunk of the EV space in North America as long as no other network offers thier level of reliability and consistency.
2 big screen slapped in can't be considered art by any mean!
well kia hyundai are doing great things with ev
@@Nickoboss29 Literally every manufacturer is doing this...
@@TD1237 unfortunately...
Blame that on the government. They should have mandated conversion of gas pumps into DCFC. Liberal Government are pathetic
Wow, that was a very busy (in a good way) review - bit surprised at the harsh exterior opinions but I get it. Ugh the charging issues are annoying - but I don't blame the cars for that of course.
Yes, I have an i4 M50 (Metallic Portimao blue) on order - it's coming this summer, I got in the early group - so really looking forward to that review from you guys!! Love the curved screen and I can learn the infotainment stuff, so not worried about that.
Those transmission buttons are the most filthy yet effective demonstration of why piano blackw is bad 🤣
Yeah not so much piano. For compensation we piano the only buttons you have to touch when Start and Stop 😅
I hate Piano Black trim for this reason. Sure it looks good in still images and PR material. But it doesn’t stay clean for long and it gets scratched extremely easily. It makes cars feel older and cheaper than they actually are.
Im so glad ur guys’ channel is getting more traffic love to see it
That reflection isn't a design problem, it's a stamping problem from when the stamps were getting made/cleaned. The same thing happened with the current-gen (maybe last) Cadillac escalade.
Finally, a BMW that won’t have issues with oil leaks.
Ups BMW fan with hurt feelings....I was going to say it'll find a way eventually. I honestly don't know of a BMW beyond 60k miles that would be perfect. And after 100k they become dogs dinner.
I’m amazed these different companies can’t make chargers work! Tesla has had the superchargers work flawlessly for years. Plug in and walk away. Why can’t anyone else do this? It’s 2022 already.
@@JESUS_IS_GOD you must not use CCS Ive personally never had one work. Same with Kyle in his road-trip reviews with CCS with out of spec motors.
They are getting better but electrify America is really bad.
I have CCS adapter and my friend has a CCS car.
Can we just have pre-bangle BMW's retrofitted with Electric powertrains. None of this nonsense K thanks.
There are small companies that do those conversions.
well customers like the digital interiors and the height of vehicle is for the batteries. from 10 models makers are consolidating down to 1 or 2 models now
Great video, thanks. Car is awesome, really loving that akward looks, inside is just peace of art. Unfortunatelly your charging network is same rubbish that here in Finland.
I really dislike the huge grills on this and the new 3/4 Series
The grilles are actually part of the reason why I like modern BMW's, they look cool and unique. Much more interesting than the other Germans.

the headlight fogging is unfortunate considering this is a premium suv i have a 2013 a4 with 196k miles and have only had two fogging instances if this is a design flaw across the whole platform and not just the car they have bmw needs to address it
Nice video! First time I watch your channel. I liked how you two teamed up for the relevant and fun delivery. The car could benefit from a better power control distribution between front-rear axles. It is noticeable how the front moves up when you accelerated fast. More power to the rear wheels should reduce that and help improve performance and overall traction. I personally like the exterior design. I have some reservations about the interior though.
This was great review. GJ guys!
Man you guys are on a roll with these electric car reviews keep up the good work 💪
Have an i3, and love it, especially now with all the crazy gas prices in LA. But yea, charging can be annoying at times. Electrify America works 95% of the time for me, except when temperatures reach 95F+. EV Go stations are in desperate need of updating, Chargepoints are pretty reliable. Largest problem is there aren't enough stations for the amount of new EVs coming to market.
you'll go crazy once they raise the prices of electricity higher than gas ever was
@@dwade3202 then, they'll bring out Hydrogen cars. Because, cheaper than electricity. After everyone transitions to Hydrogen ... EXPENSIVE Hydrogen.
It's not about being green. It's ALWAYS been about making new $$$$$$.
What does 95 degrees do?
I have owned two BMW X5's and loved them. I fell in love with the iX when it was presented in camouflage. My husband and I both pre-ordered iX50's on 8/18/2021. If so many people like yourselves hate the vehicle, instead of it selling like hot cakes, I wouldn't still be waiting for it to be delivered. My iX50 is at the port in Germany awaiting transit to the US. My husband's in still in the production process. Can't wait to receive my Aventurine Beauty. We have installed two ChargePoint flex 240 volt chargers installed in our garage. So charging will not be an issue for us. We fly for long distances and for vacations.
Yakub was ripping that corner so hard throwing Yuri all over the seats😂
Interesting to see how the reliability of an all electric bmw vehicle would be.
Every ev car as of now is in its experimental stage. The average consumer will the the beta tester. Tesla definitely has an advantage over all these other manufacturers
BMW's reliability scores are good nowadays but I can't speak for their EV's. Tesla's are very bad though reliability wise...
@@TD1237 teslas have great reliability, their batteries and motors are the most durable i have seen. Their reliability gets criticized because panel gaps and fit & finish are highlighted as reliability issues.
Maybe it won’t leak fluids at 50,000mi
@@arvins.7064 they haven’t been reliable tho
It’s like going into an old casino that has been retro fitted.
Just buy the X5 plugin hybrid: costs less, you can drive electric 75% of the time, and never any range anxiety. Also it has far better ergonomics and styling.
Great review as always. For the i4, looks like Throttle House had a lot to say, and not necessarily good things. I’m curious about your impressions once you’ve driven both.
The interior looks super plush and well finished. The materials look and probably feel great too. It is too bad the car just looks odd from the outside and Tesla is the only one that has charging that is easier than pumping gas. I haven't been to a single Electrify America station that did not have an issue (3 years of EV driving now). The Electrify America station near me has a technician on site working trying to fix it every week too.
It should look better, for a BMW. I would rather have an electric Kia or Hyundai. They look better.
I’m still waiting for the upcoming Kia EV9. that’s more of a body on frame SUV
Nah
Also I find it weird that in a province with such large cities that you have so much difficulty finding charging points while travelling. In Quebec, I haven't heard anyone complaining about this.
the new grills on new bmw models makes me cry emotionally
I hated seeing the concept but saw one up close and personal and now I love this thing🥵🔥🔥🔥
It looks ugly
I love this car! Saw one in person in Turkey and OMG everyone was taking pictures of this car. So futuristic and cool looking. On the road it has such a presence. Its surprising how they made this car look so distinct on the road even with rounded lines. No wonder BMW called it a monolithic design.
Are you kidding? It looks like a washing machine on wheels bruh
@@aono335 Not in my opinion. U are entitled to ur own however it is a fact that this car has a lot of road presence. When I was in Turkey when I was walking down the street from my hotel literally every day I saw tourists jamming up on this car taking pics and talking about how nice it looks. The owner had to move the car in the underground parking after that. LMAO! I'm waiting to test drive one and might even consider it over an M3 here in the US. But I can say the same what you said about a Lincoln, or a Range Rover, or a Tesla, or a Mercedes. Every review I watched has given this car a very good rating on tech, driving dynamics, and comfort/luxury. I don't mind the outside. It looks different in an age where all cars look the same.
@@noorghani678 shit looks ugly especially inside 😂😂
@Yes Sir So ur gonna attack people's looks when you don't know how they look? I can see your IQ is thru the roof. However still I'll be respectful. Ur opinion is urs and mine is mine. BMW sales even with these big grills have increased and have hit record high.

But I'm just saying even with these big grills BMW sales have hit a record high so it doesn't seem to scare away buyers.
Thanks for the review guys good work as usual. It’s the charging station issue that really caught my attention. Coming up with broken charging stations when you’re close to home might be considered inconvenient. I drive to Arizona in the winter. Imagine being down to 10 or 15% charge and I go to 4 charging stations in a row - and they’re all broken????? Now that is a serious issue. If our governments are going to try to wean us off ICEs- it better damn well do a better job with charging infrastructure!
Yeah good choice to review this amazing SUV, especially with the current price of gasoline.
Ugly huge grill, side looks like a CR-V, and the back like a minivan.
Interior looks very cool tho.
exactly the whole car just needs to be redesigned
So dumb to put Grilles on Electric cars
I really wish I found all this appealing but shit. I'm just not interested. I can embrace the electric car as a way of transportation but do they have to make the interior so complicated? I can just imagine that shit freezing up and wanting to but my fist through that screen.

Just bought this car today. Wasn’t planning on this option, but the car has the bronze titanium package which means front grill and trim are all in bronze titanium. Wife thinks it a bit too much bling of ghetto, but makes my car standout from all the other Ix 50’s out there.
Yeah, nice review, flashy crystal dials (??)....but will it do 9.7 in the quarter mile?
Charging stations are same problem in the US. Half of charging stations I went to was not working at all.

Tesla hands down has the best charging network for these kinds of reasons.
My God, Like piece of art.
I want to add something here in general when you guys do the review of every car, you show interior & exterior during the daytime, please start adding the interior & exterior light view during night time for the subscribers to have a look as well. Just my thought….thanks!
You guys are the masters of car comparison. I’m a doctor in mid 30s and drive a new Sienna on 30 min commute daily in Ottawa. I need a new car for myself. Smaller and fast. I’m torn between Tesla model 3 dual motor and Golf R. Can you make a video please comparing these. Gas vs electric daily driver. Thanks
first I have to say how awesome watching you guys reviewing this Vehicle .. so thank you very much for your effort .. but as for BMW .. they can't stop building poor quality Vehicles no matter what the Technology .. as of this review that is like brand new SUV that is very expensive and yet .. the headlight are already fogging ?!!! how much will cost to replace that headlight ?! the more important question . does it replacing it will fix that problem ?! finally you guys aren't the only one that actually faces difficulties finding good operating charge station and that is the number one reason why no body Trust EV's and yet they haven't address that issues that is not on BMW alone of course .. I can't imagine when it become every one drive EV how these charging station it will hold up they have to stop this app stupid thing .. just charge and pay with credit or debit card like we do with Gas why can't they just go to this way ?! anyway only time will tell how these cars manufactory .. will do . regarding built quality and reliable Vehicles and Charging stations so far doesn't look pretty .. they have seriously a lot of work to do .. I want to see that movement success .. but their approach is messy and not as expected poor in all levels .. just follow the gasoline concept in electric is that simple enough ?!!!
Guys: Onboard NAV makes a lot of sense on long trips in EVs when you need to charge. Otherwise no battery pr preconditioning, plus Google Maps doesn't show live data from chargers. Tricky traffic situations I go Google, otherwise I actually use onboard more.
As someone who lives in Ontario in the same area as these guys, every single day is a tricky traffic situation here lol

I too live in the GTA and am seriously looking into buying this car to replace my full size V8 SUV. If I pull the trigger on this all my 3 cars will be electric.
This review is great but missed the opportunity to showcase the range in our winter environment.
The exterior looks did grow on me after watching many videos. When I saw it in person at the dealership, however, it looked totally better in real life.
Maybe do an update on its real world consumption based based on normal to spirited driving during winter in the GTA. I’m curious to know what the a average consumption is in kw/100km when driving locally and at highway speeds on the 401 with winter tires on.
Great review guys! The failure rate of charging stations is so high that it makes me wonder if there wouldn’t be sabotage from oil companies, so as to delay EV adoption. And there you go, just like that, this is my contribution to the wonderful world of conspiracy theories!! :)
Can you blame them? They don't make much money off of your recharge. You sit in their spot charging for 5 times as long as an ice customer. That's five different customers purchasing not only fuel but any number of other items in their stores.
The state of charging infrastructure is why I am awaiting delivery of my third Tesla. There is simply no alternative if u r not a masochist.
And this very reason is why I'm waiting to introduce EV into my lifestyle. I'd rather drive what my heart desires than just pick something because it's the best option at the moment.
If you hold down the camera looking button with the P on it, it will start the drive recorder right away. Takes about 2 seconds, I use it in my '22 X5.

Agree that their styling is lacklustre at best. While shopping recently their styling was a turn off
Styling exteriorwise is probably about 7 or 8 down the list
6:00 Nailed it! The problem with this design is the warped body lines. I'll bet if the side lines were clean this would look a lot better... or at least less odd.
Wait till you see this in the flesh. It's much more handsome and doesn't look goofy like it does in pics. And the interior is next level 👌
For drive recorder you can just long press parking camera button. It will start recording

That said, your public charging up there sounds awful! Wife and I have been driving EVs since 2018 here in the states, but never had that much trouble the few times we public charge.
The car is brilliant and I'm not opposed to EVs but until the infrastructure for charging actually becomes a thing and the price of the EV cars themselves start to drop then it will make sense. Right now, for such a populated place, Ontario is terrible when it comes to finding charging areas, the payment system is screwed up and sure most of your charging will be done at home but charging stations need to become a thing. The fact that Canada wants to ban selling new gas/diesel cars by 2035 they're going to need to pick up the pace on infrastructure and making the grid stronger. Whenever we have a heatwave in July and one too many AC units are on we have tons of blackouts. How will the system support charging tons of cars at once?

I think I'm fine sticking with my MDX hybrid and RLX hybrid until the BEV charging system is close to the gas station level of availability.
And you have shown how we are not quite Electric Ready...Yet".
I think Manufactures are jumping the gun. Building a lot of Electric Vehicles without having the infrastructure to support it. Tesla did it right, by building the Infrastructure to go with the Vehicles. "

I think BMW could learn some things from Cadillac Lyric, which I think has much more refined look inside out. BMW's EV design language is very experimental, but not really appealing and it won't age well.
I actually think the vehicle looks good. It's a lot more modern outside and inside than the X5. The grill is over the top but I don't even mind it because it has a pattern on it.
You should review the X5 45e as the closest BMW alternative!

I don't mind most of the exterior styling on the iX but BMW needs to fix those wavy doors. BMW must have picked the lowest bidder for the stamping machinery. At times I think having an electric car would be interesting but the charging network problems are a complete turn-off and would keep me from owning one.
Yea, I was shocked when they pointed out those wavy doors; I can't unsee it. Anyone purchasing this should definitely go for the matte finish to minimize those effects.
Someone’s buying this have charging at home
I saw a new 228i Gran Coupe yesterday in traffic and the doors were wavy, it really looked bad. I don't know what BMW is doing with their body panels but I would be embarrassed to pay that much for a car and have it look so poorly built.
These wavy door looks like it's an accident-repaired car. It looks absolutely horrible.
