BMWs are so boring. In the looks, same designs for 20 years and copy and paste across the lineup. Not ugly. Normally... but just no passion for design. And when they finally try something new we get this....

@Planag7 you know some people really don't like change, but still you have alot of tech now and you have to put all of them so you can put any price and still people will buy, but too many buttons and stuff is a huge turn off so you have to make a minimalistic style, for me I will either be getting a tesla or this if it turned out as good
I was so confused reading this because I was thinking of a human when I read huntsman. Then I remembered that they're giant-ass spiders and remembered that Australia is basically a hellscape when it comes to wildlife 😂
Being a BMW fan for as long as I can remember, I don't mind the design of the rear, and the interior is quite handsome, but the side profile and front design are some of the worst that BMW have ever designed.
Hahahah! I just had a flashback to when I was young and they gave away a new Aztek in like Survivor season 1 or something during a competition... like yay! I might be living in the mud and eating shrubs but at least I'll have a Lego-inspired Pontiac when I come home.
I'm a big tech guy and I love touch screens, but at a certain point you want physical buttons for your most used commands in your vehicle, just from a safety and ergonomic standpoint. The people who can afford this vehicle are going to be older and perhaps less tech savvy. It just seems like an odd choice considering big luxury vehicles usually cater to an older crowd.
I dont understand why modern cars, especially EVs, seem to have completely moved away from buttons. And surely those touch controls on the wooden pad are going to wear off and then you’ve got a wooden panels of invisible controls
I got rid of my EV (because my XC40 had lots of issues) and got a Mazda CX-5. I'm so happy to have physical buttons for everything, AND analog speed/RPM meters! I'm so sick and tired of having screens in my car, I'm glad the Mazda CX-5 is focused on driving
The E46’s truly captured the “Ultimate Driving Machine” title. They drove like they were on rails. The steering was heavy, the engines were silky smooth, they felt special. I had a 2002 325ci, it wasn’t the fastest, it had a UUC short shifter, M3 steering wheel, and air intake. That was all it needed. I drove it until 160k miles and then sold it as I had a company car and didn’t need it. I still miss that car.
I feel like what really bugs me about the new BMW design language is how flashy and in your face they are. Lots of other automakers are going this direction too but BMW used to be sporty and classy. There was an elegance to their designs. Now they just feel insecure and like they have to scream at you about what they are. It's especially strange for the new M3/M4 which seems to be a pretty confident drivers car but the design speaks otherwise.
It's because of the Chinese market. The rich over there love being flashy and they are rather tasteless/classless. If they buy a foreign car, they want everyone to see it so BMW has become a caricature of itself with the supersized kidney grilles I remember when they switched to run flat and they admitted a big part of the reason was because people in China didn't want to stop to change a tyre
In the past BMW cars had a nice mix of an agressive yet grown-up/ classy design, meaning anyone could buy them, wether you were 20 or 50 years old, a manager or a student. But now they just look like fucking toys, this thing manages to loose BOTH of those characteristics while not even looking futuristic or anything, its just boring. Who is the target demographic for these? 45 yo old guys that are going through midlife crisis, that always wanted a BMW but their wife tells them they need a new family car and it better be something that looks like they lost all sense of taste or fashion. This is what happens when you let someone design a BMW, who has no clue of why people like BMWs.
Doug definitely dropped the ball here. Although this car has the ability to charge at a high rate, many areas do not yet have high capacity chargers other than Tesla. Tesla has the only really viable worldwide, high capacity charging network. Until high capacity chargers become commonplace in most areas, you will be sorely disappointed taking a long distance trip in this vehicle.
So bad. Seems they let an intern design the thing too. It's hideous. Such a shame because the interior is beautiful & seems to be an otherwise good car.
Overall I like it. Range and performance are good, interior is very competitive, and I’m starting to warm up to the exterior styling, it looks better in person for sure.
I don't understand the hate towards the exterior. If you see the comments of people commenting on the looks, this should be the ugliest car from the latest half century. Which is ridiculous. I'm guessing a lot of it is just people jumping the band wagon, just hating on EV's or hating because it doesn't look like a 2000s BMW.
Lots of quirks on this one...I do highly respect the creativity on the interior, they really out did themselves...not sure how well it will stand the test of time but it is very cool

I _almost_ feel bad for the BMW fans who will have to find reasons to defend the design choices that went into this atrocity. BMW really dropped the ball on this, but I do like the wood/crystal control panel in the center.
Yeah, other than the seats, the interior is quite frankly pretty boring and way too simplistic. I especially dislike the way the instrument cluster is fastened to the dash with those cheesy brackets. Also, the exterior is too bland and those grills of course, are hideous.
Im a huge BMW fan… why would i defend this? Every brand has some really bad and ugly cars… i do agree it’s crazy it’s their most expensive car. This would have to be very aggressively modified to look half decent. The 4 series that’s just normal with a battery looks so so much better
Frankly said I am a fan of BMW but I am definetly no fan of the design language of the IX, M3 or the new 4-series. They are so ugly, hideous and awful that I can't find words of how disgusted I am.
I would be very surprised if the "crystal" controls were actually glass. More than likely they are plastic, specifically injection molded clear acrylic. The crystal effect is achieved by the facets and a highly polished mold surface.
Yep they feel super cheap in person. I remember getting into a 8 series in the showroom and feeling disgusted by this cheap autozone-looking crystal shifter.
Actually, you can open the hood on the iX. There are two small looped cables under the dashboard on both sides. You pull either one and the bonnet opens up.
There are two reasons I would like to have the access to the hood area-- to change the 12 volt battery if it goes out and to recharge the AC if need be. Looking at the few pictures of that area, those are easily accessible with the hood open. Thanks for the advice on how to open.
One of the first implementations of the self healing plastic I can remember was in a smartphone back plate, in the LG G Flex (2013). Didn't really catch on. MKBHD demonstrated that it really only works with minor scratches so it's not actually that useful in real life.

Don't ignore nuance -- it's how our political leaders have gotten us here, and it's a really disappointing quality. Yes, the climate screen is poorly laid out, but virtually all of the rest of the system is well-designed. I took great care to explain how both things can be true, and I think I did a fair job covering it.

I’m probably in the minority but I *hate* the look of the “floating iPad” screen in car interiors. Hardly looks luxurious, seems more like an afterthought. I love seeing the different ways car manufacturers incorporate big screens into the body of the interior. Like the earlier Tesla Model S, and the way Audi has been doing it lately. Even the Audi pop-up screens are cooler than a fixed “floating iPad”

Although I dislike SUV’s generally speaking, this isn’t terrible. It’s clearly a luxury car. I don’t mind the side and rear views but wow that front grill is massive. It’s the same complaint I have with Lexus. Designers seem to be struggling with styling the front end of a car that doesn’t require a functional grill.

I try to let a design sit with me before forming a solid opinion. Sometimes the shock of what's new can make it hard to really see all of the car. With that said damn the exterior is ugly.
It's funny because people are hating on this but it's an OK-looking SUV. It's just that it's a stark departure from the BMW design language. Any other sub brand could have done this and it wouldn't attracted so much hate. Skoda and other car manufacturers have bland-looking SUVs. It's just that BMW has a fanatic fanbase.
I really hate how every new car have moved every single control into those horrible screens and capacitive buttons. Having to navigate menus to use functions I can do in my car just by reaching down and turning a wheel or pressing a button looks like it would get tedious pretty fast. And worse are those capacitive buttons, which are a fad that should have died out ten years ago. It's too easy to activate functions when you just have to barely slide your skin across them to press them. It feels like we're living in 2005's version of the future.
I don’t even really understand this move on this car, BMW already refined the climate controls down to their essentials in the prior interiors with just 5 buttons- I don’t think there’s any reason why that couldn’t be carried over to this car. I am hopeful they get added to future models. And as brands like Audi have proven with the R8, there are ways to cleverly integrate physical climate controls that look cool and add to the modern aesthetic of an interior- throwing the controls into the screen is the lazy and cheap way to achieving this goal. Climate controls are never going to be updated or changed with software, and there isn’t any better use of the physical space (on this car it’s just empty where the climate buttons should be), there is no reason for them to be digital or controlled by a screen. The iPhone created a touchscreen revolution by removing a physical keyboard in favor of a full screen. This served a practical purpose to allow the real estate formerly occupied by the keyboard on such a small device to be used for a whole slew of additional functions that could be changed and updated in the future. This reasoning simply doesn’t apply to car climate controls, which never need to be updated, are the easiest form to use while driving, and are not really competing for space/other features. As the iPhone itself shows in its inclusion of a physical mute switch-which also never needs to be updated, sometimes physical controls are the most usable and best way to perform a specific function, and don’t need to be reinvented with a screen.
Even more fun when those screens break, you lose everything.. And they will. Especially the ones that are pretty much like a tablet just glued onto the dash.
@@festuspunky yes, because hiding them in a screen where no one can find them or while driving is an improvement. If you understood anything about ergonomic planning you would realize how terrible it is.

I actually saw one of these on the road the other day. In real life it looks surprisingly normal. It all kind of comes together and works in the real world.
The front and rear is disgusting! BMWs are quickly becoming some of the ugliest cars on the road. This car makes the Aztec look kinda normal (I can't believe I'm saying this).
Imo, the Aztec is actually a pretty decent looking vehicle, with tons of *useful* features/add-ons. It was just way ahead of its time in regards to looks, it was made in the early 2000s when manufacturers were barely starting to move out of the 90s bubbly looking cars and into "aggressive styling". The thing about the Aztec is that it has A LOT of different body lines, and none make sense, not to mention the plastic cladding(also a 90s- early 2000s thing) If the Aztec was made in this recent decade of automotive styling, it would actually look pretty good. It was just a car with a little bit of an identity crisis
@@erickcastillon1613 Aztec always looked terrible and was never ahead of its time. Personally people were only interested because it was featured in " Breaking Bad" . Other cars in that era like the 2002 Honda CRV had a removable camping table and Honda even offered a vechile mounted tent in some models.
It's a shame some of these legacy makers aren't adding frunks especially when they stretch the wheelbase and rob space from the trunk.Having a frunk would surely make the iX feel and be even more practical than it's combustion engined siblings.
This is a common complaint. I don't really get it like we never needed a frunk in our cars before, as long as there was a adequately sized rear trunk. How come we need one now?
I guess you never lived in a city where break ins are common. Having a frunk means you can keep both the passenger and trunk area clean most of the time
@Peter Donaldson because it's the same size as an X5 but more expensive with a smaller trunk. The moment Doug opened the rear hatch you could just tell it was smaller in comparison. I thought being an EV the trunk is gonna be really deep under the false floor but no.

You kidding me? The design here is superb. Take a look at this car IRL. It is stunning. It is large. It is the future - and it looks like it. After looking at this car, almost any other car feels outdated.
Great video, but Doug missed some of my favorite quirks of the iX. First being the Bowers and Wilkins sound system; it's a 30 speaker, 1600watt system with multiple speakers built into each front seat, that BMW claims offers a "4D" listening experience. The speakers in the seats vibrate with certain notes in a song, so you quite literally feel the music in your seat. You can also customize how strong those seat music vibrations are. Second, I thought Doug would've gone crazy over the selfie camera. There's an interior wide angle camera built into the roof, near the sunroof controls, that can record video and take pictures of the whole interior. You can either go into the screen to take a picture, or just smile at the camera, and it will take you/your passengers pictures. It can also be setup with the Drive Recorder app to record interior shots in sync with the built in dash cam. Also, the front camera has a similar cleaning system as the rear view camera, only a piece of the grille pops out to spray the lens.
@@mortensenvick5711 The sound system is insane. I spent a good amount of time playing with an iX last week, and the sound system absolutely blew me away. Hands down the best I've ever heard. You'll be thoroughly satisfied with it, I'm sure.
Sadly, the selfie camera isn't available unless you have a BMW Connected account. I wanted to play with it! The 30-speaker sound system is cool, but everyone has a 30- or 40- or 1,000-speaker sound system now and everyone advertises that it offers some listening experience never previously available except to raptors searching for prey or something. It's not that interesting, especially since I can't really demonstrate it in a video like this.
@@DougDeMuro true, but this system is not just more speakers than ever before but actually different to all other automotive sound systems. It has speakers in the headrests and kickers in the seat that will kick your kidneys to the sound of the music. Truly a new experience.
BMW designer has gone crazy… but even as a Merc owner I’m actually feeling this car, I’d chose this any day over the EQC and a lot of other EV cars out there.
My friends and I saw this car at an autoshow in Seattle a few months back and ended up getting stuck inside one of the four prototypes in the world for several minutes because we couldn't figure out where the door handles were. Also funny thing is how the passenger can reach both the gas and break pedals relatively easily.
You know what? Went to a BMW dealer for an event about a month ago. Me and my dad sat in the iX and closed the doors, which was a mistake because no matter how we pressed the door release buttons they wouldn’t work. We had to knock on the window to ask someone to let us out.
If this just looked like an X5 it'd be the best EV on the market by a MILE. Drove one the other day and I own an i4.. the Ix isn't super sporty but the tech, luxury, range/efficiency, etc.. are all AMAZING. Can't overstate how luxurious the iX feels.
The BMW emblems are pretty nifty. However no access to the front hood is a letdown. Manufacturers need to realize the frunk is a huge EV advantage. The F150 Lighting EV will have everyone looking for this utility in their next EV.
Ehh I’m fine not having one, driven ICE cars my entire life I’m use to not having one plus in most cars it’s not big enough that I could see me ever using it anyway
@@Carfan678 however if you ever purchase an EV, a usable front trunk is a fantastic utility. personally i believe an EV without a frunk is a missed opportunity.

Dear bmw, learn how to do a nice EV from audi: The bmw IX lacks -frunk space -roof grab handles -adjustable front seats support for legs -a sunroof that actually open -seat belt height adjustment -adjustable headrests -rear windows don't go down more than 50% -double pane glasses -massage seats not limited to just the lumbar area (i know, as an engineer i noticed you put the speakers inside the seats, so there was no space for the massage pads, but that's still lacking) And these are just the things i noticed in a 10 min dealer visit. That's kinda of funny for a car that costs 100k dollars honestly and also the audi e tron got all of these.

Hey, friends!!! Here are some things I like and don't like about the iX ,as well as a couple questions: LIKES: 1. The crystal and wood panel control contrast is really cool IMHO. 2. The phone storage slots are totally designed for modern people. 3. Doug didn't even mention cup holders in this review. I guess they have modern people in mind enough that they don't need to be discussed this time. 4. The immediate clear/opaque ceiling window button is simply awesome. It would even be better if there were a third option to make it dark. Have at it, engineers!! 5. Doug also didn't spend his usual time discussing rear seat leg and headroom, as they must be accommodated nicely. Also with all the charge ports and climate controls, the back seat must be a very nice place to be. (I'm an even 6-footer or 182cm tall, and Doug is nearly a hand-width taller than I am so if HE is happy back there, I definitely would be.) 6. The front washer-fluid-BMW-logo access and the rear backup camera washer logo functions are just ... totally cool and well thought out! QUESTIONS: 1. Inside the rear storage compartment, there is an object at the left that looks like: a. a magnifying glass b. a pull-up spray head for washing dishes c. vacuum cleaner (WHAT IS THAT THING?????) 2. There's a rhombus-shaped little panel on the rear bumper to the right of the right backup proximity sensor and to the left of the black panel that contains the "five o'clock camera". What is that thing? The charge port? DISLIKES: 1. It's an SUV. (SUV = "super ugly vehicle")

In my local bmw dealer in italy they hide this car and showcase a m550i instead. It might be a great car, but looks aren’t a great one and they know it. Compared to that Mercedes showcased their Eqa in the city centre and it got a lot of attention.
This car is exactly what I'm not looking for in a car. Diamonds, gold, screens, aggressive look, hamster front, 22'' wheels all packed in a huge, electric SUV
@@mortensenvick5711 i live in Europe and also drive a BMW. US midsize is then for me already like riding a cow. 22'' wheels are optional, but their purpose is just a show off, same as the entire car. It's not anything that is any needed in life, it's not nimble either. It's an inflated prestige that fails to meet my understanding of the actual one. It doesn't have smooth, classical, minimalistic design, but shining crystals, golden panels and it's shouting how aggressively luxurious it is, how it's better than whatever other people drive. @@Zieeelak I understand how you feel, since US midsize is basically a full size in Europe. And also I agree about your consideration about minimalism, where the IX is lacking. It's all marketing. A simple example I can show you, in Europe where people prefer more understated design, bmw offers the dazzling blue accents standard and the discreet shadowline optional. Of course they expect the customer to pay extra to order the black shadowline. Guess what in North America, where people like more fancy exterior? shadowline is standard, blue accents are optional. I guess few people know that.
I want to add, the only reason why I'm consider this vehicle and not a smaller car are the optionals politic. If you want the best sound system, the bowers wilkins, you can only get in the bigger bmw models.
Question… what was wrong with mechanical door handles? I understand there are cost cutting benefits to deleting some mechanical buttons and switches by putting them in screens… and I understand the convenience aspect of electronic hatches and electronic parking brakes… But what the hell was wrong with mechanical door handles? I don’t see any cost or convenience benefits to it.
I agree, especially when they put in the backup/redundant manual control in case of power failure. So now I have two ways to open my door...and two things that can break. What's the point?!?
Black version without gold elements actually looks really nice in person. The huge grill and the M-package elements blend in with the black color of the car and looks way more subtle. Plus now it's two years after the video was posted and actually the design doesn't seem that extravagant anymore.
I really wish the infotainment screen was integrated better and not just stuck on the dash on cheap plastic looking posts, I think it could've been done with more thought especially for $100,000 cause it kind of ruins the unique looking design even if the design isn't really beautiful imo
Electric transition has gone out the window with this prices not to mention the mileage range The purpose is to help mother earth heal a bit Good review Doug 👍
Driving 2 ton truck full of lithium, with limited ability to repair… Volvo already admitted that EV making is worse than ICE making for the environment, and the electricity comes from burning fuels as well. The best thing for the environment would be maintaining your existing car for as long as possible
Don’t mistake. Transition to EVs is good for business - they are cheaper to make and can be sold more expensive so profit margins are thru the roof, and that’s before factoring in all the cost cutting marketed as improvement (like getting rid of dedicated buttons and mechanical door handles)
Seriously... super uninteresting. Some nice design elements like interior two tone colour, lots of tech and features, but I think this is disjointed and not most thoughtful vehicle. Never been a German car fan for these reasons. Strong performance, and certain great design elements like styling, with tech thrown at you, but missing thoughtfulness, refinement, and sensibility.
Isn't it that the grille isn't decorative but that it has sensors in it so it's more that it's been repurposed. I think a better move would have been if BMW had continued with the design language of the i3 and i8 and evolved those designs.
This is definitely a good attempt at moving towards the future of electric from BMW. The interior looks nice for what it is, while the exterior looks... ehhh. I'm not sure how I feel about the center console ending and having some additional empty space before the dash, instead of having it connect to the dash. It makes it feel like you're driving a truck or van, more so than a sporty vehicle. Personally, I'm also not a fan of this whole new "minimalist" approach for vehicle interiors that we're heading towards, from Tesla's to now BMW. I think it's too bland and dumbed down, and even a little too sterile feeling. I like having all of the controls accessible right at my finger tips. I also like the analogue feel of pressing buttons and switching switches. It almost makes you feel like you're in a spaceship (depending on the vehicle of course), and is definitely more intuitive than having a giant screen where all of the options are hidden behind different menus. It's also a safety hazard because now you have to physically take your eyes off the road to stare at a screen and make sure you go to the right menu, not that it matters since so many people drive while on their phones anyways. :/
I agree with your thoughts about the center console ending before reaching the dash. Reminds me of a minivan, or of a truck with an unfolding center front seat. I think it's extra dumb that they could've put physical climate controls in that space, but decided to put nothing at all instead. What a poor use of space. I think the interior looks very nice, but I feel like the whole minimalism thing stops being minimalist when it becomes more difficult and tedious to perform basic tasks. Shouldn't a true minimalist interior allow you to perform basic functions without taking your eyes off the road? I think we should stop calling them "minimalist" and just start calling them "lazy".
"It brings the brand's design in a whole new direction." Off the cliff, apparently.

That was a bad decision m8... But hindsight is 20/20 as usual :|
If they buy a foreign car, they want everyone to see it so BMW has become a caricature of itself with the supersized kidney grilles
I remember when they switched to run flat and they admitted a big part of the reason was because people in China didn't want to stop to change a tyre

The thing about the Aztec is that it has A LOT of different body lines, and none make sense, not to mention the plastic cladding(also a 90s- early 2000s thing)
If the Aztec was made in this recent decade of automotive styling, it would actually look pretty good. It was just a car with a little bit of an identity crisis
@@erickcastillon1613 Aztec always looked terrible and was never ahead of its time. Personally people were only interested because it was featured in " Breaking Bad" . The EQC doesn’t compete in this price point if I remember correctly.
I basically ordered the IX over the audi e tron just for the bowers wilkins lol. I can't wait too see if it's as good as the one on volvo
The cool thing about the sound system in the one I saw with H&k is the “experience the sound” which gives you a cinema like speaker demo
BMW designer has gone crazy… but even as a Merc owner I’m actually feeling this car, I’d chose this any day over the EQC and a lot of other EV cars out there.
nah the new genesis ev is more worth jt
The eqc is way cheaper tho
this is ugly a.s.
if you have to use the touchscreen for almost everything, you would they’d make it a little more responsive.
My friends and I saw this car at an autoshow in Seattle a few months back and ended up getting stuck inside one of the four prototypes in the world for several minutes because we couldn't figure out where the door handles were. Also funny thing is how the passenger can reach both the gas and break pedals relatively easily.
'Gas' pedal? You mean accelerator? No petrol in this car!
@@ElusiveTy Throttle* sounds better
@@ElusiveTy missed the point by 1k miles. If it's ev can't be stupid?
You know what? Went to a BMW dealer for an event about a month ago. Me and my dad sat in the iX and closed the doors, which was a mistake because no matter how we pressed the door release buttons they wouldn’t work. We had to knock on the window to ask someone to let us out.
🤣
Whenever I see controls on the centre armrest it makes me wonder: how often will a passenger change settings accidentally?
If this just looked like an X5 it'd be the best EV on the market by a MILE. Drove one the other day and I own an i4.. the Ix isn't super sporty but the tech, luxury, range/efficiency, etc.. are all AMAZING. Can't overstate how luxurious the iX feels.
The Chestnut leather package is stunning. I've owned high end Porsche/Jag/Audis and the iX interior is just flat out better.
I got one and I confirm that. IX 40 with bowers wilkins and multifunction seats. Stuck with 20' wheels and got the best ride in the market
@@Carfan678 I think the frunk is a huge benefit and major selling feature for consumers with the new Ford F-150 Lightning due to it being a pick-up truck... In a sedan or CUV it may not be as much of a deal-breaker since those don't have open beds in back.
Doug, you are massively more relaxed while driving compared to years back. Confidence 👍
Really selling us on the electric car revolution here - not as dynamic or engaging to drive as an IC, less storage and also looks hideous, all for a measly 100k.
that is one of the sexiest cards on or off the market. even the door panel is stunning.
Thx for another great review Doug. I miss when you went through each category and assigned a score. Now you just jump right to the final score without any explanation on how you got there to a certain extent. I wish you would bring that back. Also, I would like to know what the safety rating is on the vehicle or you could devise a score of your own based on what the official rating is. We could learn a lot from a Dougie 😀
I don't really get it. He was so positive about the car : its interior space/its comfort/its luxury/its speed/even the look. He didn't hit hard on the look, and then he just jump on the final score without any explanation. So weird
Doug barely cares anymore
Dear bmw, learn how to do a nice EV from audi:
The bmw IX lacks
-frunk space
-roof grab handles
-adjustable front seats support for legs
-a sunroof that actually open
-seat belt height adjustment
-adjustable headrests
-rear windows don't go down more than 50%
-double pane glasses
-massage seats not limited to just the lumbar area (i know, as an engineer i noticed you put the speakers inside the seats, so there was no space for the massage pads, but that's still lacking)
And these are just the things i noticed in a 10 min dealer visit.
That's kinda of funny for a car that costs 100k dollars honestly and also the audi e tron got all of these.
you're totally right!!
Looking forward to seeing how the Cadillac Lyriq compares. $20k less and deliveries begin on a few weeks.
doesnt it lack range?
@@danielh9981 Over 300 miles estimated. So on par with the iX.
Hi Doug. Hands down you are favorite reviewer. I have a request on something you never do and I am sure many of us would appreciate you including in your reviews moving forward. Please include the sound of the vehicles audio system. Many auto makers have adopted upper end brand names in the audio and it would be nice to know if they live up to that name or not.
Thx again for your great reviews
I really like the “accessories” idea. Every car should have a laptop table in the backseat like trains/airplanes
Finally! been waiting for you to cover this one, not because i'd consider buying one, but as a Bavarian i understand their quirky thinking and every new BMW Model always ends up having both incredibly fun but also infuriating Quirks & Features and i bet this thing is full of them.
Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps
With a more sober interior color it should be a stellar choice.

I just read your comment on Donut media's latest video, you've got great taste in car youtubers I must say.
I mostly love and appreciate BMW's external car unique and distinctive designs but I cannot say this about the iX. This car doesn't seem like a BMW at all other than the enormous grill.
It is an ugly car in my opinion and the gold trim only contributes to that.
Fun fact: the gold trim is a $600 option. Normally it's black.
@@Cptn080 WoW!
One of the ugliest cars I’ve ever seen
Hey, friends!!!
Here are some things I like and don't like about the iX ,as well as a couple questions:
LIKES:
(I'm an even 6-footer or 182cm tall, and Doug is nearly a hand-width taller than I am so if HE is happy back there, I definitely would be.)
6. The front washer-fluid-BMW-logo access and the rear backup camera washer logo functions are just ... totally cool and well thought out!
QUESTIONS:
1. Inside the rear storage compartment, there is an object at the left that looks like:
a. a magnifying glass
b. a pull-up spray head for washing dishes
c. vacuum cleaner
(WHAT IS THAT THING?????)
2. There's a rhombus-shaped little panel on the rear bumper to the right of the right backup proximity sensor and to the left of the black panel that contains the "five o'clock camera". What is that thing? The charge port?
DISLIKES:
1. It's an SUV.
(SUV = "super ugly vehicle")
Appears to be the tow hook
The "grills" of this car are absolutely hideous. It's not the "future car", it's the "future addition to scrapyard!"

Want to see a review of the Model X Plaid now, or even a Long Range, to really get a comparison between these rivals
So you mean to tell me that they kept the massive grill that they literally don't need since it's an electric car?
@@g2jxGhF5G8z1gL7S They could have made something stylish, instead of a big, caricature plastic ugly grill.
@@g2jxGhF5G8z1gL7S I get that, but they have a smaller grill that they use to use until recently. They didn't have to use the massive one that (seemingly) a lot of their fans dislike (I'm assuming, or it's just a very vocal minority)
The gold accent’s on the exterior are an optional pack and your range numbers are wrong (at least in km, should be 100km more:)
Looks like I'm keeping my R1S order. I cannot imagine picking up my friends for a round of golf in a bejeweled interior. This thing looks like it was accessorized with a gift card from Claire's.
The crystal stuff is an optional extra fortunately, but BMW seems to fit it on all their press cars for reasons that escape logic.
of couse the rivian r1s is way better. In europe we don't have that option, but you should consider the ix over the R1S only if you're an audiophile and want the best sound system on the market, that rivian doesn't offer (bowers wilkins).
Yeah, I was surprised he didn't mention the R1S as a competitor. I know he hasn't reviewed it yet but he did do the R1T and loved it. The R1S looks better, it's faster, higher towing, better interior, better exterior, AND it's cheaper........
BMW keeps making it harder and harder for me to be a fanboy
In my local bmw dealer in italy they hide this car and showcase a m550i instead. It might be a great car, but looks aren’t a great one and they know it. Compared to that Mercedes showcased their Eqa in the city centre and it got a lot of attention.
Mercedes' EV's are number one on the market right now.
Good quality + range make it them good.
This car is exactly what I'm not looking for in a car. Diamonds, gold, screens, aggressive look, hamster front, 22'' wheels all packed in a huge, electric SUV
The crystals are pretty tacky indeed tbh
this is a midsize and crystal and 22 inches is an optional
@@mortensenvick5711 i live in Europe and also drive a BMW. US midsize is then for me already like riding a cow. 22'' wheels are optional, but their purpose is just a show off, same as the entire car. It's not anything that is any needed in life, it's not nimble either. It's an inflated prestige that fails to meet my understanding of the actual one. It doesn't have smooth, classical, minimalistic design, but shining crystals, golden panels and it's shouting how aggressively luxurious it is, how it's better than whatever other people drive.
Go to a cheap russian hotel that pretends to be expensive and you'd understand what I mean. It's like being rich vs looking rich
Finally at a point where I can afford to buy, and repair, most BMW's..but the continued design language ensures I'll probably never buy one
get a nice audi S8 V8 instead :)
Question… what was wrong with mechanical door handles?
I understand there are cost cutting benefits to deleting some mechanical buttons and switches by putting them in screens… and I understand the convenience aspect of electronic hatches and electronic parking brakes…
But what the hell was wrong with mechanical door handles? I don’t see any cost or convenience benefits to it.
I agree, especially when they put in the backup/redundant manual control in case of power failure. So now I have two ways to open my door...and two things that can break. What's the point?!?
Because burning alive in your car is sooo in right now.
Hey Doug remember the Crystal aftermarket shifter knobs sold at autozone.. so easy to see where BMW got this Idea 💡
Agreed. The best screen integration in the modern German cars in my opinion was the one used on the W222 S-class.
I wish there were actual dials, and actual usable controls of any kind.
Who saw air vents and thought "what these are missing is LAG!"?
Electric transition has gone out the window with this prices not to mention the mileage range
The purpose is to help mother earth heal a bit
Good review Doug 👍
do you know what does it take to produce and utilize a electric car battery?
@@janiewiemstary8710 yes
It's also harsh on the environment
@@janiewiemstary8710 but it's a step in the right direction
Driving 2 ton truck full of lithium, with limited ability to repair… Volvo already admitted that EV making is worse than ICE making for the environment, and the electricity comes from burning fuels as well.
The best thing for the environment would be maintaining your existing car for as long as possible
Don’t mistake. Transition to EVs is good for business - they are cheaper to make and can be sold more expensive so profit margins are thru the roof, and that’s before factoring in all the cost cutting marketed as improvement (like getting rid of dedicated buttons and mechanical door handles)
7:20 come on Doug nothing about this car is a throwback nod to classic BMW
This is the best Luxury EV SUV at the moment. Just need the right colors.
Edit: Norway second most sold EV this year so far. Only Ioniq 5 sold more.
Of all the vehicles Doug's reviewed, this is the one I like least.
The color scheme of this BMW and its design elements looks like it should be an Ironman edition.
wanted to say the same
Isn't it that the grille isn't decorative but that it has sensors in it so it's more that it's been repurposed. I think a better move would have been if BMW had continued with the design language of the i3 and i8 and evolved those designs.
26:28 - Doug temporarily becomes Luigi
I think we should stop calling them "minimalist" and just start calling them "lazy".
it requires money to make money this is the best secret I have ever heard we don't make money we make multiple money
