It doesn't make you nauseous because it's fast. It makes you nauseous because what you expect the car to do when you push the go pedal are not well aligned with what it actually does. It does not accelerate the same way a gas car does. If you drove it every day, your expectations would change, and you would no longer get nauseous. The reason for the vibration before launch might be to get the motor in it's prime zone or to get the drive train out of the static friction zone. Rather than start from literally 0 rpm. That way you have torque earlier.

BMW has much better customer after purchase care and quality control in manufacturing. It's good for Tesla fans for these older names to be giving them competition to improve.
Great video gents. I think this is a great looking car and I would love to get behind the wheel of it. I would like to make a suggestion, though. Do not stop ranting about your charging situation. As a California driver, I do not have to deal with any of the charging issue you have to. This is not an issue with the car, it is an issue with the charging situation in your area. You and everyone there deserve better, but it will not get better unless people demand better. I think your rants will help the drivers in your area and help people invest in a better environment.
Neat car, especially considering it is priced only slightly above an M340i but will actually cost less with the tax credit and is halfway between the M340i and a full M3 in performance. This would obviously be better if it were built on a pure EV platform, but is still fairly impressive considering what it is.
After 10 years driving BMWs, I was the same, here in Poland Tesla is nearly non existent- so i4 M50 all the way. Than I got EV6 for a weekend testing. There’s no way I’m paying that much for i4.

Yeah, I will miss the 1-8 hard buttons with the touch preview - wow, I think you guys are the first to like the petrol-to-EV shared platform. So happy that it's Jacob's favorite so far!
Got mine on Feb 17. Enjoying it. But the black M sport seats - don't have those, just the regular ones in Cognac but still comfy. Still haven't tried the launch control. No where safe to do it / haven't had time. But even rolling into sport boost is something. I'm glad we don't get the side M badges. Thankfully my apt has Level 2 chargers, so that's been great. Just need to get a NEMA 14-150 plug installed at my mom's house since I drive down I-5 a lot to visit.
I test drove the i40 and it was amazing, but ended up going with a 330e like you mentioned at the end of the video. I think it's the best of both worlds, but I'm excited to see what's coming.
This looks better than the normal 4 Series because the grille is deemphasized, and the headlights (which are a work of art) are emphasized! (Which is the opposite of the normal version of this big grilled BMWs)
Thanks @thestraightpipes after watching and then buying a 440i on your recommendations, im now trading up for an i4 M50. Thanks again for the awesome reviews.
That sensor controlled regen breaking sounds super awesome! I really like the coasting on my car (when I let off gas pedal), but really like the idea of good regen breaking on an EV.
The crazy thing about these cars is that RUclips doesn’t do them justice I remember looking at the Tesla 3 thinking that’s not that fast until I actually raced one on the street and those things move like crazy You Can’t even imagine how fast this or the S plaid move
I know TrueCar is your sponsor but, have to let you guys know this. TrueCar will either give you a message "contact dealership for pricing" or it gives you a price, when you call the dealership they openly say "we do not honor that pricing". Just my personal experience with the last 3 vehicle purchases from 2020 - 2022. Reached out to dozens of dealerships prior to each purchase, using TrueCar several times and above was my experience.
@TheStraightPipes, that inside camera (which is missing here) is possibly powering the gesture control feature. At least, that's what the manual of my 545e tells me.
Man, EVs should be true to what they are. No fake engine sounds, no “shaking” the car in launch mode. I love my EV and embrace the ways it’s different from gas.
Couldn't agree more .. car manufacturers should stop trying to hold on to relics of the past and simply create a new future that leverages the things that make EVs special .. imagine if cars were built to function like chariots ?
Transition period. Gotta get the boomers on board with the change. Make it feel like a gas car so as to not scare the boomer in his/her (typically) antiqued world view.
With all the charging station infrastructure issues I don’t think I would buy an all electric car yet if it’s the only car in the family, yes if I had another gas vehicle.
Teslas charging is great, it’s only the CCS network that is difficult. Also only some vehicles have issues, rivian trucks seem to work amazingly on them, but mustang hates them and faults out every time.
How often do you go on 200mi+ road trips a year? Otherwise, owning an EV is like having a personal gas station in your driveway. You'd rarely buy gas elsewhere.
@@Cakebattered we go on road trips twice a year and if the infrastructure is not dependable then I will wait, that’s why I have a new gas suv coming in July which will probably be my last gas vehicle and when I trade it in in 5 years the infrastructure hopefully will be better equipped. I drove one, my 1st electric car. It is so "instant" fast. The regular public is "not" ready for this kind of speed. It went from a regular car to..."Whoa wait a minute !!!🤯". It's a different kind of speed !!!
As a Model S owner, I can say the hatch is a SUPER great feature. Tesla missed something here by not going with one on the Model 3. This BMW has the rear hatch, plenty of performance, a robust feature list. If you tick MOST to ALL of the options, the price comes out to around $70-$75,000 USD. A Tesla Model 3 with most to all of the options (including the full Autopilot suite) is around $75k as well. JMHO, but for the same $75k, the BMW seems to be the better car. That said - some will note that the Tesla is a little bit quicker, perhaps faster around a track, and has much better range. One thing that stick WAAAY out is the i4 M50 weighs FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS. A Model S is 300 lbs lighter and a Model 3 is 1000 lbs lighter - that's a HUGE difference. Both the Tesla and the BMW are excellent cars for the money, but clearly have some notable differences that will be appreciated by different market segments.
Yes - thinking about the weight difference, mainly the M3 is empty, much less tech, if insulation very few of it inside, its basically a tin box compared to a real car which can make the difference if that important to you. I drove Teslas and they are very noisy in the cabin, if you don't care its for you. 500kg difference is a lot though, totally agreed.
Hey Jakub, a little pro advice, the rear stepping out and wanting to "go down the hill before the front" is called rotation, that means the rear tires are being overloaded before the front and therefore causing the car to turn without fully oversteering. That says more about the suspension setup of the car than the Regen.
Well if regen is causing it then I think it says something about the regen. If the regen is more aggressive on the front motor then it will cause the rear to step out no?
Pretty sure what he was talking about was when he would lift off the accelerator pedal going down a snowy hill, the agressive regen braking would cause the back end to slip and step out. Other EVs have this issue, particularly the RWD models (who litteraly can't regen the front wheels) and some AWD ones as well. It has little to nothing to do with the suspension setup and everything to do with how the regen is calibrated.
@@MyaSooon it's actually the opposite, it is likely doing too much regen with the rear motor causing it. Already going downhill makes the weight transfer more towards the front, slowing down adds onto that effect. So you end up asking the axle with the least amount of grip to do most of the braking.
My biggest complaint with my model 3 is the driving position for taller drivers. It feels like in order to put my seat where it's comfortable for my legs, it's just slightly too far away from the steering wheel. If I sit close enough to the steering wheel, not enough support under the legs. Still worth tho honestly. BMW semi hatch is cool too
The BMW has very great design for the trunk area too. One can easily use tie down anchors to secure things and bulky items in the trunk area. When my brother tries to put his doggie cart in the Model Y's trunk, the doggie cart just slide left and right and back and forth a lot making scratches in the Model Y's trunk area. The BMW has a lot of tie down anchors for securing items, hooks on the side panels for grocery bags, etc. The German company has been in the business long enough to know how important it is to tie down things in the trunk especially if you have a fast car for cornering and accelerating and stopping.
The model 3 performance was the slowest it ever performed vs the i4 drag race than in any other carwow video. Numerous videos from carwow have the Tesla clocking the 1/4 mile at 11.7 and 11.8. The Tesla has never done 12.0 in any other carwow video. Run what you brung, that’s fair, but the model 3 performance is faster than 12.0 1/4 mile, and definitely faster than the 11.9 the i4 put up. Additionally, the model 3 performance from the head to head video comparing it to the i4 is a different car than the one used for the drag race comparison. I wish carwow listed state of charge with their electric car comparisons and drag races.
Tesla fanboys are still burnt. The simple fact is that model 3 performance is faster to 62 mph (100 Kmph) and i4 M50 is faster to 124 mph (200 Kmph) these can be confirmed with the GPS certified data from AutoTopNL End of story.
@@hemantchawla3461 not end of story. Your missing it. no one is burnt again I said it comes down to the driver in a drag race. The BMW however is 768 pounds heavier. Let’s see what it does with a corner involved! BMW had to stuff more battery to get 45 miles less range! BMW is still 10 years behind in battery, motor, BMS technology not to mention software sucks. If Tesla wanted to make the model 3 performance faster they clearly can. For the record I was a BMW fan boy way before I was a Tesla fan boy. My first car was a 1973 BMW 2002tii. !!
When you spec one out that’s comparable to an M3P it’s 10-15 grand more, your getting into LR model Ss at that point. Don’t forget that you have to add everything that M3 comes with standard, parking sensors, heated seats, etc.
I love this car and nearly waited to buy one just based on the hatch. I went with the Tesla 3 because first, you can't actually buy one... Also it's way more expensive, Also charging network is still trash, Range is still nearly 40 miles less and it's half a second slower. It's cooler but by far though.
There’s no RIP for any Tesla until the charging networks can even remotely compete with the super charger network. Especially if it’s going to be your only car and you do more than just city driving. PS: I know the title was just for fun ❤️
As I understand it this car has less range, charges slower, has less acceleration in most circumstances, and is slower through corners due to the massive weight discrepancy. That said, it is a nicer car. Just depends on what you want from an EV I suppose. I find the range on my Sr+ to be adequate, but would like a bit more on trips where you end up running sentry, or dog mode for periods of time that end up sucking down the battery more than the pre-planned route had you believe. So in that regard this BMW would likely disappoint for the price.
Not to mention all this and it costs more than a model 3. I'm happy the panels align lol and the interior is superior in terms the infotainment system, and the seat ergonomics and comfort, but you can't discount the fundamentals of an EV and the fact that Tesla has driver assist.
@@Olis4897 Yeah, this doesn’t kill the Model 3, in fact, it actually acts as a better sales pitch for Tesla because they can say that their competition is still nowhere near their entry level models
Agree - there's a lot of tradeoffs here though it may be worth it for some people. It also has front wheel drive biased AWD (torque steer), the i4 costs more, has increased braking distance, less software included. There's also the "sleeper" Model 3 - Long Range with the acceleration boost which is even better value.
Bmw actually changed the diffuser here because their exhaust tips are usually more centred compared to other cars so this one resembles a change in bmw

(especially considering it's so much more expensive than the Tesla, but even if they were the same price...).
the Its a much better constructed luxury car vs a premium at best poorly built car. Hence the price difference. Oh and factoring the tax credit which you cant get with Tesla its really not that much more expensive
@@doomsday9973 I don't know which country you are from but in my country there's no "tax credit" for cars, so the price difference is important. Great quality! The only thing is that it's 400KG heavier than the Tesla 3 since it's not based on a EV platform, also there is no frunk, Tesla also does the more range with a smaller battery pack, on this, we have to give them the credit

I honestly don’t have a problem with them calling it a M. I just wished it looked a little more aggressive. Something as simple as adding 15mm to the rear wheels and give it a wider rear.
I prefer the Model 3 performance. Weighs much less, has more room in the back, has a center console but with more storage, has a true track mode (with drift) fully disabled systems, has better range and better charging infrastructure.
It also has a cheaper look interior i.e. poor materials for its price, availability of replacement parts is ridiculous, that center screen controlling everything with so few buttons makes for distracted driving and I'll stop there for now.

When I finally get my i4 M50, I will be delighted not to see another car like mine on every street corner. One of the biggest turn offs of owning a Tesla around here.
More refined than the Tesla, but with less utility. The ADAS Tesla has is years ahead, but they lag in fit/finish. (Shopped between this, M3P, GLC 63, and MYP - went with the MYP)
As a Tesla owner, that 15 second blurb about charging is a good enough reason to not buy this. Tesla isn't just competing on features, 0-60, comfort etc, the value of how abundant, reliable and quick supercharging is can not be understated. This is on top of the fact that it integrates straight into the GPS, it basically eliminates any kind of planning required / range anxiety which is the biggest barrier when going from gas to EV.
I did that with a normal gas car from 16 to 17 and now I can't get average of 600 km fuel range, sits at 450-500 kg range... So yeah... it cost energy rotate larger mass
i own a 2021 Model 3 (and love it!) but i wouldnt mind test driving one of these and seeing how it compares.
Yes but the problem is that this one is ugly as hell to look at...
@@HaruHaruman It may not be the prettiest car on the road, but it is infinitely better than the amorphous jellybean blobs Tesla produces.

@Nicole Judy Yes, do you recommend Mr. Watson for investments? I think he has a WhatsApp number, right?

BMW semi hatch is cool too
Did you notice the rear visibility? Is that the same as a reg 3 series?
@@josephcitizen4195 haven't driven one unfortunately, but I can almost guarantee that it's the same as an ICE 3 series grancoupe
1:21 those overwhelming faces...... turned on by the G force... gold!
If anyone is curious about this vs a model 3 performance, carwow on RUclips did a drag race video. Neither is slow, but the m50 is faster
"so what exactly happened?..."
-Mat Watson somewhere
I watched the entire video not sure if you did. The BMW is not faster. It arguably comes down to the driver.
Tesla fanboys are still burnt. The simple fact is that model 3 performance is faster to 62 mph (100 Kmph) and i4 M50 is faster to 124 mph (200 Kmph) these can be confirmed with the GPS certified data from AutoTopNL
End of story.
@@hemantchawla3461 not end of story. Your missing it. no one is burnt again I said it comes down to the driver in a drag race. The BMW however is 768 pounds heavier.

@@noyb9284 I didn’t sit in the new i4, but did in other BMWs and the quality is not that far off. As for parts availability, we have no idea how the i4 will fare.
The screen in the Tesla works flawlessly.
So say it once again Tesla has all the performance, track mode, faster more accurate steering (according to Matt Watson), lighter, more back seat space, better charging, more range… and is cheaper to buy.
Agreed. We also know the Tesla Model 3 motors and battery pack is proven and reliable as people have over 200k now on them. Let’s hope BMW was able to engineer similar technology.
@@aussie2uGA bullshit. Tesla interior do not compare to BMWs.
@@ehudk215 the model 3 is better than the model 3 performance. Better range, better wheels for hitting pot holes. Plenty fast. Better bang for buck. It beats everything in terms of day to day real world car use
The intro songs are fire lately 👌🏼
Nice ride. I'd love to own one. Too bad it can't use Tesla's charging network yet. I'm sure like the Model 3, they will be able to sell every car they make, but Tesla will be able to make a lot more Model 3's.
Tesla makes more cars bcuz they cut more corners
@@pantherdxn4835 best part is no part
When I finally get my i4 M50, I will be delighted not to see another car like mine on every street corner. One of the biggest turn offs of owning a Tesla around here.
@@hotrod182 get used to it. Soon Tesla's will be everywhere.
With a starting price of $47k and no new models planned for the next 2 years, don't hold your breath.
I hate that BMW is diluting the value of the ///M badge by putting it on non-M models.
No front trunk is a major letdown.
I’d still get the Model 3 over this one based on frunk and charging network.
Why is the Frunk a relevant Criterium its just a bit additional Cargospace, the hatchback ist 1000times more important for me.
Yes hybrids are great, able to carry around engine, motors, gas tank and batteries. Great for weight increase and decreased efficiency.
Wow 1” larger rims costs you like 60-70kms in total range.
Duh yes
I did that with a normal gas car from 16 to 17 and now I can't get average of 600 km fuel range, sits at 450-500 kg range... So yeah... it cost energy rotate larger mass
Another reason not to put big heavy rims on your car
something about this front end making it look less goofy than m3/m4... very subtle
Yes it's definitely better and not see through
i own a 2021 Model 3 (and love it!) but i wouldnt mind test driving one of these and seeing how it compares. I have no complaints with my model 3 however I did drive a 2019 model 3 and it was night and day difference! Lots of improvements over the years from tesla where I wouldnt even consider older model 3s to be the same vehicle as the newer model 3s. Much better handling, build quality, and fit and finish.
It's worth noting that the RWD i4 is only 55k CAD and has 500km of range
Don't care for this car, but I love seeing the progress of those houses under construction.
I don't know why you guys don't promote your merch. It's the only merch out of all the RUclipsrs I've seen that I'd actually wear because unlike other merch where's it's just fan boy gear your shirts actually look cool.
I think this car is more of a threat to the Taycan than the Model 3
the i5 will be an even better rival to the taycan since it most likely have a M60 version
Agree
@@NotMyAccount for the price perhaps... but interior dimensions are about the same.
I feel like y’all needed some lighting inside on that cloudy day, y’all look like almost unlocked characters in a video game for some of the video 😂
RIP tesla sure but a reminder that the base i4 is $10K more than a LR model 3, it’s slower, has less range, charges slower and although it’s getting better, charging infrastructure for this is still way way worse. And you have to pay extra for basic things like heated steering wheel, seats etc.
nice car but it’s certainly not killing the model 3 any time soon.
The only thing this almost had over the Tesla was looks but that grill is hideous so it manages to lose to the Jelly Bean at absolutely everything.
@@S8ER I don’t even mind the grille, it’s a nice car but they retrofitted a gas car and it doesn’t perform as well as a model 3 in pretty much any way for a lot more money. I like it but this won’t even make a dent in model 3 sales.
@@raydoherty5419I agree the people who will buy this weren't looking at Tesla to start with (BMW has a very loyal fanbase).
Bmw has a way better interior
@@S8ER might want to check and see what the most commonly traded in vehicle is on a tesla model 3. Spoiler it's a BMW 3 series. 😀
