- This is part two of the rebuild series of the engine from the popular video "FIRST START IN OVER 40 YEARS" Sit back and enjoy as we take this engine apart for the first time in a long time!!! I hope you like it! =)
hey thanks for the shout out, nice to see others tearing into rusty old junk too, that engine came apart easy for how many years its been sitting,
Thank you so much for all you do! THANK YOU!!! You've taught us well sir!!! Yes, this engine is in great shape! I can't wait to get it all cleaned up and ready to build. Thanks man!
You such a great inspiration Mustie1, I know nothing about tiering down engines, but the same enthusiasm you have for fixing things, inspires me to be great at my profession, I'm a cost accountant.
Shout out CT great video...
Quit breaking bolts, penetrating oil, heat and tapping all help. Also, why overhaul an engine that is running well and not smoking?

Hey Bob! Thanks man! I appreciate that! Stay tuned! COOL!!! =)
If it’s air cooled why does it need a thermostat ?
Love your channel C T ..I'm 70 and disabled now ,and a lot of time on my hands .so it makes me smile to see a old VW come back to life..
Hello Pappy! I'm glad I can put a smile on your face! Thanks for going on this journey with me! Stay tuned sir! =)
Have a nice day Sir
Thanks man! you too! =)
Ya mustie is the man! He's the roadkill of vdubbs!
Yes he is Larry! Thank you! Stay tuned! =)
You are doing great, Mustie 1 is also my favorite, he is generous and explains what he is doing very well, he takes us along with him to tag sales, and other places which I find interesting. seems very likeable.
Hey Tom! Yes Mustie1 is #1! Thanks man! Stay tuned! =)
Your Engine is a 1192cc 34 HP model according to your carburator, its a Solex 28 PICT, greetings from Germany.
Oh wow! That's interesting. Thank you! Stay tuned!
wow see even I was wrong with the 1200 guess..that puppy is as old as the whermacht kubel vagons schloopen schleepers.
Yep i agree. Mine were 1965 1200s
@@CTmoog Your engine is marked with a "D" and tht means that it is a 1192ccm 34PS. Maybe this site is helpful: www.kaeferwissen.de/html/motor.html
Very interesting! Thanks for the info! Thank you!!! Stay tuned! =)
If you split that case Im done watching your videos, there is no reason on Gods green earth to go farther on a break down..even that old hippie manuel will say that..now just clean up that 1200cc and put it back together with new piston rod head sleeves/rings push rods/sleeves/fuel pump and put the dirty lil' thing back together the way you found it and if you dont torq the heads down right you buggered your lil' engine project for good...
Hey Allen! Don't give up on me now brother! Stay tuned! You will enjoy the rebuild! Trust me! =)
@@CTmoog remember what the kruat told you its a 34hp 1192cc, my 61 had a 38hp, your bus must be from the 50's.
I gotta agree! No need to split the crankcase at all. That engine looks fine inside. I’d clean everything up, replace gaskets and seals and call it done. I might give the cylinders a light hone and slip some new rings in it, but that’s as far as I’d go. No sense in spending time and money where it’s not really needed. You’ve got plenty of other places on that bus to spend your time and money....
Hey John! I want to do it for a few reasons. To learn and to preserve the engine so it runs good and safe! Thank you!!! Stay tuned! =)
Cool shout-out to Mustie1 and VWNut1967......
Thanks David! Stay tuned! =)
Mustie1 is the man!
Yes he is! Your pretty cool too! =)Thanks Matt!
Glad to see that thermostat is still in working condition! Good used ones are rare as hen’s teeth these days. You got lucky!🍀
Hey John! I know. This engine is in great original condition! Thanks man! Stay tuned! =)
You’d have been better off when undoing the exhaust studs, to follow mustie1 method.
Don’t even try undoing the nut, as it will break the stud. Better to cut the nut off, then you can clean the stud.
Mustie1 has several videos of him doing this....
Yes, I know and I've watched him do that as well! I'm hard headed sometimes! =) Stay tuned!
Better to tighten bolt afore you slacken it tighten about an 8th of an inch and most of times it comes a bit lube or heat. Sometimes helps a few chaps with a hammer also helps 👍👍👍🏴😜✌️
Good tip man! Thank you! Stay tuned!
Agree with u, I like mustie 1 channel. Many knowledge I have from that channel.👍👍
Hey Shufian! Yes! He is awesome! Thanks man! Stay tuned!
Yes bro, many community vw from indonesia 🇮🇩, we really love VW combi. hopefully I have one at my house...can’t patient waits for ur next videos...👍👍👍
Awesome!!! =) Thank you!!!
Hi CT, first of all, thanks for sharing. I'm sure there are many following your channel with great interest. I would take this opportunity to go into some detail regarding the head bolt nuts. In my opinion, based on some 55 years or so of working on these old aircooled engines, its extremely rare for these nuts to "work loose" during service. The most common reason is that, the headbolts are pulling out of the block. On reasembbly, these need to be drilled out and Helicoiled. The case halves are not particularly strong in that area and it is common for these studs to work loose in their threads. Cheers from Indonesia, keep up the good work.
WOW! Thanks for the advice man! I really appreciate that! Sounds like you've been down this road before!!! Thank you!!! Stay tuned! =)
Good Morning CT I've not been watching your clips long. I started with the swamp monster. Then started watching the VW panel van. What I've noticed is some of the clips I'm watching over and over, and struggling to find the follow on. It would help me if you numbered the clips. You've given me back my interest in motors. Keep up the great work. Buzz from Great Britain. Take care
my first thought was 40 hp but without the manifold on it I cant tell for sure. Put the 1384 kit on it and 1600 rocker set on it. Be sure to shim them and it will pull that bus just fine.
interesting.... where do you buy your kits? Or are they all the same basically?
Always better for the whole stud to come out than break lol Good work!
I know right!!! Got lucky on that one! Thanks man!
I like you project but if’s you can show the dirty parts more than 3-5 seconds it’s very boring just keep working on it We can paused and review again And you can show more progress. Thank
Its a 1200 40 horse motor. Had 2 of then and ran good. You can tell by intake size
Mine were 1965 versions 1200
Thanks Robert! That's good to now! Thank you!!! Stay tuned! =)
Nice!! =)
Keep up the great work love the vids man 👊🏻👌🏼👍🏻
Thanks man! Stay tuned!
Great as always CT! So awesome to see this channel go boom and to have been a part of it right from the beginning! BTW I ordered the Hankook RA18 Vantra tires from simpletire.com $331 delivered to my house (coupon code saved 10%) and I absolutely LOVE them! I’ll be doing a video on it soon! Highly recommend them! So quiet and very solid ride, no more feeling like on marshmallows! 👍
Oh cool! Can't wait to see the video! That's a good price! I might order some too!!! =) Thank you!
Mustie has inspired many of us. Even me. Much respect to him. If I'm a hoarder, it's all his fault. He taught me how to drag free broken crap home to fix.
Hey Eric! Me too! It's his fault! =) Thanks man! Stay tuned! =)
@@CTmoog Not saying I can fix things, I only have the intent to =)
NICE!!! Me too most of the time! =)
@@CTmoog Look, I learned a lot from my Bradley GTII VW. I wish I still had it, it turned heads, but I didn't know enough then. Right now I have a Honda xr600r, I'm sure everyone is tired of hearing about it...lol... I'm going to take a stab at rebuilding it, parts are all here, it will be my first resto/ custom. I'm going to piss people off with the paint. I'm not going red white and blue like factory. I'm doing my thing.
@@CTmoog I think my point was VW is a real easy engine to learn on, and I actually enjoyed it. It was a FUN car to work on. I just wasn't financially stable at the time.
I'm wondering why you didn't wash it before all of the work. Man that would make your life easier.
Yes, I should have washed it first! Did you subscribe? Stay tuned! =)
I would encourage you strongly to read the Muir book a couple of times or at least study the chapters that are related to what you are working on at the time
Thanks Ivor! I will sir! Thank you!!! Stay tuned! =)
1200cc
Thanks Phillip! =) 1200cc 40 HP correct?
Did I see triple valve cover gaskets? LoL!
3 times better!
I think so! It was think! Maybe just swelled up or something...?
Its amazing that the thermostat is even still there... and it looks like is may still be good, too!!!!!
And there ya go! You tested it! AWESOME!
Yes it works man!!! Crazy right!!!
It is alarming that there is virtually no oil on the rocker arms when you pulled the first cover. Seems like the valve lifters are not pumping oil through the lifter rods and to the rocker arms... Definitely need to be checked!
Furhermore, as you pulled the first cylinder off, it shows that all 3 rings have there gaps nearly in one line, definitely a no go as they need to be angled at 120 degrees apart and none of the gaps should be in line with the piston pin. My personal recommendation, make sure the oil ring opening is pointing straight up and set the 2 compression rings at 120 degrees angle left and right from the oil ring.

Something (lots of somethings) says that engine has had some serious work done on it not all that many (tens of) thousands of miles ago. Not just how how (relatively) easily so many bolts and slot-head screws came off, but the condition of the heads (even the valves looked reasonable from what the video showed) and the bores. I'm not saying it was done in recent years, but it certainly looks like it hasn't done that many miles since. If the condition of the top ends are anything to go by, I bet the bottom end is sound too.
Great videos - BUT - I would have washed the engine before disassembly. It is much nicer to work on a clean engine and you reduce the risk of getting dirt, dead bugs, cobwebs etc. into the crank, cam and other delicate parts.
Looks all good for now ... Every video makes me more excited for the end result
Thanks man! Stay tuned! =)
pb blaster and a torch needed for rusty bolts
yep
Hello Mr. CT! I am happy that this engine seems to be pretty good condition. Maybe the previous owner has drove it regularly and changed the oil on time. It is progressing well! I can't wait when you open the case!
I follow most you and Mustie1 videos, I like it when old cars and things are bring back to life. Keep up the good work!
Hello! I think it was well taken care of. Thank you!!! Stay tuned! =)
My son and I back in early 2000 we meet the bug me video family at a vw car show back then they had VHS tapes which we got then later we up-grade to the complete series on CD. It helped us pull the body off the pan do a full rebuild on his 1978 . We learned a lot over the year from the ones you talked about plus EZGZ . The one who i enjoy watching and learned so much from and he is why i started sharing my hobby with VW in my garage is VW64manyrd on his video's i always felt like i was right there in the beetle barn with him watching his work. Another one years back was Jack Kessel he did a 12 part series on rebuilding a vw motor. Today we have a lot more great folks out there sharing there experence with vw..
That's awesome Dan! I've watched EZGZ too! He is great! The BUG Me guys are great! I spoke with Rick on the phone when I ordered the DVD. Very nice guy! Thanks for sharing your insight and knowledge a swell sir!

Hey CT =) thought I would check in and see how you’re doing. Fun fun fun you lucky guy. Just an FYI those head bolts/nuts will always torque check that way. The lower four have been living the life inside covered in oil. The upper four not so much. They suffer the ravages of rust and corrosion and will always click regardless of their actual torque. Keep on keeping on. You’re doing great 👍
Thanks for the info man! That's good to know! Thank you!!! Stay tuned! =)
When i used to restore engines once out of the vehicle the first thing i would do is degrease or steam clean it always made things more organized or perhaps that's just me. you're doing a great job....👍🏻

No sorry. In the Year 1962 they only build 1200ccm . 34 HP
Lots of Mustie fans! Love his channel . Makes you feel like you're right in the garage with him. Wrenching is therapeutic, enjoy the process!
Hi CT!!! Another excellent video. I'm 99% sure that Rusty was given a 1600cc engine at the Volkswagen plant in '62. Once the heads are ported and polished, it will run like a sewing machine. Keep it rolling.... It's going great!!!😁
that would be nice :)

the van ran great , better than that guy's beetle that was at your place, it was missing like not running on 4 cyl
Very nice editing this time:) lol good information and high speed and I like that you show pit falls of an old motor and what it takes. That gasket for the generator stand with the slots in, it’s important when you re assemble that those slots face the right way, or it will throw all the oil out when you run the engine!
Thanks Smiffy! Good to know! =)
It’s 3am here in England, and I’ve been commenting in real time as I watch.
I strongly recommend you get yourself a good quality set of cold chisels, and some different sized nut splitters.
Over the years, I’ve found these to be well worth it when working on very rusty hardware!
Those valves look pretty good, maybe there aren't that many miles on a rebuild. If it's only a 1200cc maybe you can get it bored out, anyway this rebuild is very cool to watch, thanks CT!
Hey Daniel! Yes! Everything seems to be in great shape! That might be a good idea! Stay tuned! Thank you! =)
Not jugs they be cylinders. Jugs are head and cylinder all one piece . Like aircraft engines and some motorcycles.

Hello! =) Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support! Stay tuned! =)
There is a motor letter, at the generator holder, below "Zündfolge" If you can name that letter or letter combination I can give you the engine data. Oh, and broken off screws? get used to it. You'll learn quickly how to get the stumps out and cut new threads. :) Overview about the letter code for VW air cooled engines: www.michaelknappmann.de/bulli/michaelk/vw_bus_d/motor_nr.htm 11.30 My eyes, is this a letter D in front of the engine number?`Then it would be a 34 hp 1200 ccm engine. Quite small for a Bus, the ordinary Beetle had one. You prolly have a Beetle engine in a Bus.
This is the # D092159X
@@CTmoog It is a 1200 ccm 34 hp engine then. Normally used in Beetles and not in busses. www.michaelknappmann.de/bulli/michaelk/vw_bus_d/typen.htm The Beetle is technically a Type I and the Bus is technically a Type II.
Fabulous congratulations on the video my friend.

TRUE!!! =) Thank you!!! Stay tuned! =)
That engine looks to be in good shape! did you try to get it running prior to taking it apart???
yes you need to go back and see when he ran it in the bus! pretty amazing
Good to see it going well. It's a really good idea to check the front main bearing, closest to the flywheel, for axial play. If it's too much it can be shimmed, but if it has eaten into the case and keeps moving no shimming will help and it's only a matter of time until it really fails. I check that first before doing anything. If it's grooved it's a waste of time/money until you get it thrust cut or a new case. Bearings should not move.
Thanks man! Good advice! Thank you!!! Did you subscribe? Stay tuned for more videos! CT =)

Will you atill rebuild the engine if it turned out to a 1100 ? they are a pretty rare peice but suitable for display unless you like driving slow. A school mate in the 60's dropped a valves in his dads Kombi and they dropped a 1300 into it, a brand new one. it was cheaper than chasing parts for an engine they stopped supplying parts for in the late 50's.
I;m not sure yet if we are going to give it more HP...I might keep it original....Not sure! Thank you!!! Stay tuned! =)
like a lego :)
Yes! Ike a lego! =)
What is the case number? I couldnt get a good look at it on the vid. i can tell you what it is out of originally. As for the cylinder head you pulled off , by the numbers it is a 1966 1300 single port
Interesting! case # D092159X
@@CTmoog those #s indicate a VW factory exchange 1200cc case somewhere inbetween '69-'72
Yea, makes sense to replace all the seals.
Probably best to get the head rebuilt too. Mic out the bore and pistons while you're in there, deglaze if it specs out good and new rings. yada yada.
