Does a Weapon Mounted Light Affect Point of Impact?

  • You have a quality rifle and you just finally added a flashlight. Will that brand new flashlight affect your point of impact?
This video is in response to a comment we received on our backpack gun video on our company RUclips ( / tatargets ) The commenter adamantly stated that having a flashlight on the end of a rifle or pistol like this 10.3" 5.56 will affect POI. What do you think? This is not a scientific video and there are many variables that could affect each build differently. Test your gear!
Regardless of what adding a flashlight does or does not do, you should ALWAYS confirm zero on your firearms any time you make a major change. You should also do quick zero confirmations often, even if parts are not changed. This is especially true if this is a firearm you carry with you.
    We hope this video helps!

From my experience I would say your 100% correct. The only ways anything can affect your barrel is if it's not a free float forward stock or if you have screws pushing against the barrel.

Everyone needs to pay attention to the t-nuts, usually there are 2 sizes, a set being longer and set shorter

@@son_of_guns yup this happend to me I looked down my barrel one day and noticed it was warped to the left a lil bit. I freaked out and immediately thought my barrel warped when I leaned it up against the rack while hot but upon further inspection one of the screws from my mlok accessorie was pushing against the gas block pushing the barrel way left so ya pay attention to screw length and placement.

Lights by the muzzle device are bad for a number of reasons.
    1. It does shift POI. It may only be an inch as illustrated in this video, but at greater distances this is a big issue. Shot placement is key for anyone needing to take critical shots, such as LE or HVT security. A headshot on a target holding a hostage at 50yds+ is hard enough. Having a round go 2 inches wide of your POA is not acceptable. Also, anything blocking the gases from venting properly causes the weapon to recoil differently. The closer the light is to the brake, the greater the affect.
    2. A light beside the brake gets dirty faster. Can't gain PID in low light if your light is caked in carbon.
    3. The light is exposed to more concussion and heat which can cause the light to fail sooner. And we all know things like to fail when you need them the most. Don't set yourself up for failure.
Shoot the same test at 50 yds, 100 yds, then 200 yds and compare the difference. In your video, your grouping may be similar but your POI certainly shifted. To say you don't think it affects the POI is a blatant disregard for the "test" you just did. If you're going to just ignore the results, why even do a test to begin with?

Love your videos and really appreciate your effort. What color Cerakote is on that particular setup? Thanks a bunch. 😊

Great question, but I would simply not zero my weapon until all that I intend to have on it is on it. No question if you do that regardless of how or what you have you on it.

As long as the barrel harmonics are not effected, all should be good. However, if the gases exiting the barrel and reflecting off the light and does effect the bullet, I'd think you might see it at a much greater distance, say a couple of hundred yards plus. Then I gotta ask, "Why are you using a light at that distance anyway?"

I suspect you are right. There is something underneath from the accessories touching the barrel. More guns, more ammo and more shooting with other guns would confirm or disprove this hypothesis. As if you need another reason to go to the range.

Hello. Excellent an very informative video. That is a great point but not sure as to why an how it would affect the POI?? That makes no sense actually. That’s my two cents.

Imo this would come down possible to the quality of your light, but how do you feel about build up on the lens when foward to muzzle?

Even if the screws dont contact they can when the barrel whips around.

Wouldn't the projectile have already left the barrel though? Don't think it'd matter at that point, unless your goin full auto perhaps?

The only way that would be true is if it was on some clamp band thing on the barrel itself.

People are weird, it's a free floating barrel hire would a light effect it. Good call to on the screws on the gas block tho.

The reason we put 400$ freefloat rails on our rifles is so our craps doesn't effect our zero.
