Decidueye is such a neat starter. Rowlet was the first starter since BULBASAUR to be dual-typed, and the fact that it changed it's secondary type upon evolution to Ghost, and all the different elements that went into its design (including extinct native Hawaiian owls!) make it the best Alola starter in my book (sorry Popplio, you're still adorable). I'm glad to see that it had such a successful career, even in the lower tiers! But let's cut to the chase - How Good was Primarina ACTUALLY?
Plus I'm pretty sure owls are one of the slowest birds. (Okay quick Google search, great horned owls can fly at 40 mph. Also 'They [owls] have large wings relative to their body mass, which let them fly unusually slowly.' But owls usually fly very slowly (2 mph or so) to hunt prey.
people keep talking about movement speeds when it seems to me like the speed stat would often be prioritizing reaction/attack speed, with maximum movement speed being a secondary factor. and we're told that decidueye can apparently aim and fire arrows in a fraction of a second, so like... yeah, telling me "owls aren't that fast" doesn't satisfy me when the very next gen, we've got a freaking penguin that's blazing fast as long as it doesn't have ice on its head (Eiscue). and going back to the same gen that introduces decidueye, its slower than a jellyfish (Nihilego)
Yeah fair enough, pokemon speed is weird. How is a miscolored pokeball that needs anger management faster than every pokemon except 4 and tying with 3? Don't know : / I guess you could say it's for balance or gameplay or filling niches or whatever. For example, if there already was a grass type that filled Decidueye's niche if it was fast, so they made it slow to boost its other stats. But grass types have always been traditionally slow, I think at least. So I think Game Freak might just have a personal vendetta against Alolan pokemons. Since as someone else put it, they decided to break literally all their ankles except for like a few legendaries and mythicals. Along with a bee, a meteor with its shell smashed (I'm seeing a pattern I don't like here. Guess they're all Naruto.) A lizard with fan service, the Alolan Forms of 4 pokemon a rock doggo and flowers. If you don't count the legendaries and what nots or the Alolan forms. (Of course GF aren't gonna break their ankles.) That's 5 pokemon that breaks 100 speed. (Flowers is tied) so 4. It's so weird too, because pokemon like Zerora gets appropriate speed stats. 'As fast as lightning strikes' Honestly, I think there's a formula GF is following that they try to deviate from for fans expectations. Although this doesn't work a lot of the times. (Eiscue from slow ice types.)
"Decidueye also arguably possesses the most difficult name to spell correctly of all starter Pokemon." Funny thing is, I actually spelled its name right on the first try without looking at the name when typing my original comment.
Robin Hoot showing off his superb archery skills to the world of competitive Pokemon, I'm hoping my favorite Grass starter has somewhat of a niche. Also, Sinister Arrow is the best Starter Z-Move in my opinion. Something about arrows raining down to explode looks awesome.
Since we've broken the taboo of Gen 7 Pokemon, I can't wait for you to make a video about Incineroar, so that you can spend 27 seconds talking about it in Smogon singles, and roughly three hours talking about it in VGC.
@@cameroncox1008 I mean hum ........ the original video is fine as is, it definitely is not anywhere near the top of the list in terms of remakes being needed. If I were to make an unpopular pick, I'd say that Onix/Steelix deserve it quite a lot and should be near the top, it would really help to expand on Steelix' role in GSC as a near mandatory option on the most popular style of offense for most of the generation, how Steelix was a face of gen 5 RU not just for it's defensive prowess but also the offensive one funnily enough, the power of Mega Steelix especially in the lower tiers or how good and varied Onix was and is in Little Cup. This remake isn't talked about a lot despite it being actually really needed, way more than Luxray, and is on my personal list
Always bothered me how Decidueye has mediocre speed. If only its Special Defense and Speed were swapped, it would make it more threatening offensively considering its decent coverage. Also since Gen 7 is the only gen to not have a starter in a final form have at least 100 base speed
Alolan Pokémon in general tend to be slow, probably because they live in a tropical paradise so their lives are pretty much a permanent summer vacation, so they're chill and therefore slow. Ok, that's a bad explanation. Here's a good explanation for Decidueye's speed tho: archers need to stay still and focus to launch their arrows and there's also the issue of reloading, an archer can't just run around at high speeds firing arrows with perfect accuracy AND reloading them in the blink of an eye. XD
@@taipaulsen4347 I saw an average base speed chart and Gen 7 is unsurprisingly the slowest. And despite there already being Pokemon who lose speed upon evolving, there are many Pokemon that are like this from Gen 7. Incineroar, Toxapex, Gumshoos, Vikavolt, Mudsdale, Toucannon, Crabombinable, and Golisopod The thing about Vikavolt is that Grubbin initially loses speed when evolving into Charjabug. It gains speed again when evolving into Vikavolt, but Vikavolt is still slower than Grubbin.
If I recall correctly (damn time flies) this exact scenario already happened in the past : Breloom (why ? Idk) was the first Gen 3 Pokemon covered on the channel and Garchomp (first gen 4 pokemon) had his own video made before any other gen 3 Pokemon got his own Weird it's happened twice huh ?
After a lot of years, he finally did an Alola Pokemon. Thank you for this week's video, learning about the meta is always interesting and fun. I don't know what Pokemon you will do next, but I reccomend Ribombee.
I love Decidueye, but that type-change on evolution definitely screwed up my team balance in campaign. I'm also a big fan of Dhelmise, so I'm happy to see it show up in this episode.
Sad part is that Grass/Flying aren't good combo types either. Unless they have some sort of coverage movepools, stats total rises up or an incredible ability, Grass/Flying isn't all that good if an combo. Look at Jumpluff & Tropius.

Incineroar: EVERYWHERE in VGC as an Intimidate spammer. Pivots extremely well with boots and Parting Shot. Primarina: Alright in OU, but an Amazing UU wallbreaker.
I'm so glad to see my favorite starter finally get a video! I always thought it was so unfair that its speed crippled it so harshly. It (and plenty other Alolan Pokémon) definitely would have had a shining presence in higher tiers without the Alolan speed curse. The Ghost typing makes it so unique, it's a shame. That being said, I'd love to see a video on my other favorite Pokémon, Rotom and its many forms. No one can deny it's had a huge impact in Pokémon VGC!
I've always been a fan of Litten more than Rowlet, so I can't wait to try it out in PLA! It hope it does get a new form, but if its regular Decidueye then thats cool also.
My Gen 7 starter of choice. Out of the three times I've played a Gen 7 campaign, I've used the garunteed crit strat with Rowlett's Razor Leaf and eventually Decidueye's Leaf Blade in two playthroughs to great success. And the fact that he has False Swipe is quite helpful too!
Mimikyu is my favorite pokemon, and i've quite literally waited for years for the gen 7 floodgates to open. Please cover it! :) Btw, thx for being around, it's really nice to just relax and indulge on great content.
Ye, competitive and defiant are great answers to that ability, even the user base for both are quite good. Way more satisfying momentum tech compared to entry hazards.
For a little flavor addendum: Decidueye’s pre-evolution, Dartrix, has had niches in some earlier stages of the SS ZU metagame! With Eviolite and Defog, Dartrix was a great bulky hazard remover that could check big threats like Gourgeists, Grassy Terrain teams, and a good amount of weaker Water and Ground types.
There's quite a few rumors buzzing around about a Hisuian Decidueye being introduced in PLA. Granted we don't know if its true and even if it is, we most likely won't know how good it is until its in a game where battling is the focus, but if the rumors are true, I hope we get an update.
@@camoking3609 I forgot I made this comment until this reply, so thanks for reminding me, haha. I have two different trains of thoughts on Decidueye-Hisui, Design and Competitive Viability. If we're talking purely visually, I like it a lot. I think making it visually appear as a Ronin compared to the original's archer is a nice variant on a... well, regional variant. As someone who's also seen Kyoto's vibrant leaves first hand, I love the fact they gave it a vibrant autumn color palette reminiscent to maple leaves during "Momiji." Competitive wise... this is tough because currently we don't have adequate competitive for Legends Arceus nor do we know what changes these Pokémon are going to undergo into the transition to Scarlet & Violet as of this comment. That said, I can make some hypothesis. Grass/Fighting is a fairly common type and there are already big heavy hitters with that combo like Breloom, Verizion, Chestnaught, and the seemingly busted Lilligant-Hisui, making Decidueye-Hisui hard to stand out. What's worse is that type combo gets obliterated by Flying attacks and unlike the others that have adequate coverage options or stats/abilities that can even the odds, Decidueye doesn't currently have those so ending up in tiers like AG/Uber/OU/UU is most likely out of the question. Decidueye-Hisui has potentially two saving graces that could secure it a spot in the RU/NU meta however and those being its signature move, Triple Arrows, and its hidden ability, Long Reach. Triple Arrows decreases the targets defense by -1 while simultaneously increases its crit ratio by +2 for 3 turns which sounds great until you realize that your opponent can switch into something in the next turn, losing half of that attacks benefit, while also not really being able to guarantee a punish on whatever switches in. Long Reach might be interesting because all physical attacks are immune to contact based damage but for the most part its pretty situational. So a physical attack like Triple Arrows on something like a Ferrothorn sounds pretty nice but at that point, why wouldn't you send out a Fire special attacker and use Fire Blast/Flamethrower?
@@officernealy I think hisuian decidueye's viability relies on what happens when he gets his updated movepool although it's really sad that he has to compete in the hisuian circuit against LIlligant if i had a nickle for every time decidueye was outclassed by another pokemon that shares it's exact same time in it's debut generation, i'd have two nickels, which isn't alot but it's rare that it happened twice although to be fair, It's reasonable to assume liligant is about to but every Grass/FIghting type in the game down a notch except maybe breloom bc brelooms is more of tactical Pokémon more then an outright attacker
@@camoking3609 Yeah, It's pretty hard to compete with a Breloom w/ Poison Heal, Spore, a giant pool of great STAB Fighting/Grass attacks, as well as a modest amount of coverage moves. My hope is that maybe when Decidueye-Hisui gets transferred over to Scarlet & Violet it will either get some of the moves its Alolan counterpart does like Spirit Shackle, U-Turn, Sucker Punch OR it gets better STAB moves like Close Combat, Grassy Glide, Drain Punch, etc.
15:10 I'd just like to point out that "Sirfetch'd is about to be attacked by its Leek!" is one of the funniest sentences ever. Ghost types didn't just get all the buffs in Gen 8, they got all the laughs too
Rowlet was my first ever Pokémon. I had a friend telling me that Decidueye was the worst starter, but I had little difficulty using it. The only times I lost were Totem Mimikyu, who took me around 10 attempts to beat (not my proudest moment) and Professor Kukui, who I beat on the second attempt. I have mad respect for the birb, and he's even one of my mains in Pokkén Tournament. He's easily in my top 10 favorites, tied for 2nd with Sceptile.
Great to get such a positive video! I loved Deciduoeye's design, and using it in Pokemon Sun, so I was sad to see it wasn't considered at all for the higher tiers. Glad to know it got some love.
I barely know competitive Pokémon, but I had to click because you were highlighting my favorite kiddo! It’s heartwarming to hear that, he might not be a top tier Pokémon, he’s fantastic at the tier he _is_ in.
@@skullerclawerbandicoot7966 your talking about speed right? Spd is commonly used as an abbreviation of special defense, not speed. If you are saying that its special defense is bad you should just look at its stats, 135 base special defense is nothing to sneeze at.
It's so insulting how so many Alola Pokemon have low speed for literally no reason. Vikavolt and The starters to name a few. I wish Decidueye swapped its Sp.Atk with its Speed. Then again, its mixed stats makes it incredibly versatile.
The slowest flying birds are the American woodcock and the Eurasian woodcock at 5 mph. While it's true owls tend to wait on a perch and then dive on their prey, lots of the smaller species catch their prey in the air. The burrowing owl can even chase prey down on foot, and the extinct stilt-owls (the inspiration for Decidueye), having the same build, are likely to have hunted the same way. A great horned owl can fly up to 40 mph, but usually flies at half that speed. Same with a barn owl, going as fast as 20 mph, but as slow as 2 mph.
Yo!, amazing video, i guess sword dance/nasty plot gave decidueye a really good chance in his respective tiers. i hope the patreon boys like drapion, cuz i would love to see one of these videos made for him
Decid to this day is one of my most underrated OU weapons. Defensive set with long reach, Roost, Spirit shackle, Curse, confuse ray. I can’t count the number of toxipex and Ferrothorn switch in on him only to be spirit shackle trapped, and curse stalled to death.
If I had a nickel for every starter that existed for only 2 generations as FSG talked about them, I'd have 2 nickles Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
If I had a nickel for every FSG video about a Pokemon from a brand new generation without having made more than one on the previous generation, I too would have two nickels For those wondering, Breloom was the first gen 3 Pokemon for some reason and then Garchomp followed it before any other gen 3 mon did. And bear in mind, they still hadn't done the gen 2 starters at the time either
So a few days ago I started an Ultra Moon run for the first time ever. I decided to pick Rowlet. That birb was always there to help out the team and I really started to like it. Just as I finished the run, this video came out. Perfect timing.
I feel like all that's needed to make Decidueye viable is to swap its Attack and Speed. The fact it's so slow and frail means it's overshadowed by every other Grass/Ghost type.
Let‘s see. Trevenant is a slow physical attacker, followed by Gourgeist, which is often a slow physical attacker and Dhelmise, a slow... physical... attaker...
Well with the exception of Dhelimise, I don't know if Trevenant & Gourgeist are any better than Decidueye. But I agree Dhelimise is easily better than the rest.
Physically frail sort of… specially frail… not that much unless you count strong neutral or super effective hits. Its special bulk is almost equal to Meganium’s.
Alola had the best selection of starters since Sinnoh. Can’t decide which of them is my favorite. It was cool how they gave them type secondary type advantages against one another, similar, again, to the Sinnoh starters, and specializing in different offenses. Decidueye, mixed Inceniroar, physical Primarina, special
First off, glad to see how the first Gen 7 mon being reviewed is my favorite Gen 7 Starter. Rowlet is SO CUTE!!! Secondly, I’m glad False Swipe implied one of the nitpicks I think people had with Decidueye in competitive. Its physical and special attack were nearly identical, good for play throughs but meaning you really had to max the necessary EVs depending on with stat would be more useful in competitive, which could be situational sometimes. It’s physical attack IS higher, but when you want a strong Grass Type attack, some would focus on the higher physical attack and hope for a crit with Leaf Blade BUT MANY in Ultra Sun and Moon easily went with Leaf Storm. Even the Sp. Attack drop wouldn’t stop it in most situations. Some mixed attackers have it rough in competitive…
Decidueye is amazing. It has a bow and arrow. Ghost typing. It also had Spirit Shackle man. Such a good set up move for the game. It was a damaging mean look.
Decidueye (and like half of all alola pokemon) have a big weakness: their speed. For some reason, GF decided to make many alola pokemon very slow. Decidueye should be a glass cannon, not a bulky offensive tank. I hope this gets redeemed in Legends Arceus.
The first ever Gen 7 Pokemon covered on the channel! And I must say, since it usually plays at the start of FalseSwipeGaming's analyses, it's so odd hearing "War Force - Son of Hades" playing over Sun and Moon footage instead of Stadium/Colosseum/Battle Revolution footage like it usually does... the things you pick up on when binging the series man...
Your First Gen VII Pokémon Ahh.... Remember it felt like was only just yesterday you did Greninja your first review on a Gen VI Pokémon this is 2 Post Gen v+ Pokémon Keep it up Keep up the good work.
I wonder where his Hisuian form will stand when the Legends Pokémon make it into a competitive multiplayer game since Legends Arceus is strictly single player (besides the trades) for now. Edit: So Gen 9 got announced and confirmed that some Hisuian forms will return (Zoroark for example) so hopefully Hisuian Decidueye makes it into its Dex this time then well see how good it stacks up.
I remember bringing Decidueye into OU. I would actually run an Assault Vest Decidueye with Special Defense Ev's and Attack Ev's. It was because I was bored and wanted to try something unique. And in all honesty *Greninja was crying in the corner* No this wasn't used for competitive reasons but for fun.

'As fast as lightning strikes'
Honestly, I think there's a formula GF is following that they try to deviate from for fans expectations. Although this doesn't work a lot of the times. (Eiscue from slow ice types.)

To be fair, blaziken also kind of resembles Horus/Ra, which would make it part falcon, and those are pretty famous speed demons.
Decidueye was also based on the extinct stilt-owls, which also explains their Ghost-typing.
As the first part ghost type starter, that automatically makes Decidueye pretty cool.

XD
I’ve always been so mad that gen 7 Pokémon were so slow
@@taipaulsen4347 I saw an average base speed chart and Gen 7 is unsurprisingly the slowest.
And despite there already being Pokemon who lose speed upon evolving, there are many Pokemon that are like this from Gen 7.
Incineroar, Toxapex, Gumshoos, Vikavolt, Mudsdale, Toucannon, Crabombinable, and Golisopod
The thing about Vikavolt is that Grubbin initially loses speed when evolving into Charjabug. It gains speed again when evolving into Vikavolt, but Vikavolt is still slower than Grubbin.

Granted we don't know if its true and even if it is, we most likely won't know how good it is until its in a game where battling is the focus, but if the rumors are true, I hope we get an update.
soo...
what u think?
@@camoking3609 I forgot I made this comment until this reply, so thanks for reminding me, haha. I have two different trains of thoughts on Decidueye-Hisui, Design and Competitive Viability.
If we're talking purely visually, I like it a lot. I think making it visually appear as a Ronin compared to the original's archer is a nice variant on a... well, regional variant. As someone who's also seen Kyoto's vibrant leaves first hand, I love the fact they gave it a vibrant autumn color palette reminiscent to maple leaves during "Momiji."
Competitive wise... this is tough because currently we don't have adequate competitive for Legends Arceus nor do we know what changes these Pokémon are going to undergo into the transition to Scarlet & Violet as of this comment.
@@officernealy I think hisuian decidueye's viability relies on what happens when he gets his updated movepool
although it's really sad that he has to compete in the hisuian circuit against LIlligant
if i had a nickle for every time decidueye was outclassed by another pokemon that shares it's exact same time in it's debut generation, i'd have two nickels, which isn't alot but it's rare that it happened twice
although to be fair, It's reasonable to assume liligant is about to but every Grass/FIghting type in the game down a notch except maybe breloom bc brelooms is more of tactical Pokémon more then an outright attacker
Ghost types didn't just get all the buffs in Gen 8, they got all the laughs too
I'm still mad he didn't make it into super smash Bros ultimate as originally planned.
The first Gen 7 Pokémon to be reviewed on this channel. Excellent job. 👏👏👏👏👏

Funny how Decidueye has only been around for Two Gens, yet has more information and usage then Pokémon that have been around for far longer
A lot of people have commented on it's speed.
Owls are slow. The slowest flying bird, I believe. They evolved to fly quietly. Low speed makes sense.

If I had a nickel for every FSG video about a Pokemon from a brand new generation without having made more than one on the previous generation, I too would have two nickels
For those wondering, Breloom was the first gen 3 Pokemon for some reason and then Garchomp followed it before any other gen 3 mon did. And bear in mind, they still hadn't done the gen 2 starters at the time either
Probably will happen more often as the series goes on, so need a new reference eventually.

Let‘s see. Trevenant is a slow physical attacker, followed by Gourgeist, which is often a slow physical attacker and Dhelmise, a slow... physical... attaker...
100 special defense is definitely frail
Well with the exception of Dhelimise, I don't know if Trevenant & Gourgeist are any better than Decidueye. But I agree Dhelimise is easily better than the rest.
@@nickshane5985 when you got a pretty frail typing, that 100 sp.def doesn't even matter

Dhelmise: I don't even know who you are!
Alola had the best selection of starters since Sinnoh. Can’t decide which of them is my favorite. It was cool how they gave them type secondary type advantages against one another, similar, again, to the Sinnoh starters, and specializing in different offenses.
Decidueye, mixed
Inceniroar, physical
Primarina, special
I agree. Gen. 7 probably has the 2nd best starters all around. Gen. 4 being the best.
If Decidueye got an almost 20 minute video, Incineroar's video is gonna be a feature film.
Decidueye (and like half of all alola pokemon) have a big weakness: their speed. For some reason, GF decided to make many alola pokemon very slow. Decidueye should be a glass cannon, not a bulky offensive tank. I hope this gets redeemed in Legends Arceus.
