It's not a big misdirection but I love the end of Rhymes like Dimes where he says "you thought the song was over." Idk why but it always makes me laugh.
You know that was one thing a lot of people didn't like about cats like MF DOOM and even dudes like Jay Z. Like if you notice those kind of rapper's songs are so hard to memorize. They either had to many or not enough syllables in a bar. To the regular listener the esthetics might not sound as appealing to the ear, but that flaw makes them unique though. Once you get the hang of it, rap patterns and rhyming on beat is almost hard not to do. Like DOOM would literally change the rhyme mid bar, it's almost like an abstract art. Most emcees rhyme in patterns of 4 and switch the rhyme up every 5th bar four times to make 16 bars in a verse. Good emcees like Pun or Kool G Rap will do a whole 16 with multi syllabic rhymes. DOOM was different though all while making little slick rhyming remarks or cheesy punch lines to catch you off guard. He was spitting off beat, rhyming differently, and was even some what comedic because he's suppose to be the villain of rap. He's kinda poking run at the rap game. He doesn't want the typical rap fan to like his music. He doesn't want his appearance to be any part of his get up either and it's what most rappers base their whole career on. A popular face with star power, but who suck at the actual craft. He didn't even like doing shows and would even have other dudes where the mask and do it for him all because he is suppose to be this super villain of rap. There will be no one else like this guy.
I wish I could show y’all my DOOM poster. It’s on rainbow foil and there were only 50 made. Hand numbered. It cost me $55 and another $65 to frame really nicely. So worth it.

I've since discovered more of his music from all his aliases and as such have a much deeper understanding of it all and his style. It has inspired me to try to rhyme off beat as well as other techniques that very few artist like himself can pull off and I'm not half bad. Definitely something I would not have ever even thought of attempting if not for someone so off the wall like DOOM had he never blessed my speakers with such an exquisite style. Gonna continue to write like DOOM is still here cuz he inspires me still everyday that passes, it's like he never left.

Well while we talk about DOOM lets take some time and look back at one of his most underrated songs - Dead Mouse. Now im just gonna cut it to the probably best punchline i heard in industrial rap ever (means battle rap punches dont count). It says ''V sells time to an inmate''. I guess most of DOOM fans get it, but i will break it down just quickly. In jail all you have is time or getting more time means getting longer sentance. Now, to sell time to the one who has nothing else but time is what makes this punch so hard. The metaphor is just untouchable. I doubt anyone will ever beat that one single bar
This is a topic I've wanted to talk or write about for years and never got around to it, so thank you for acting giving this a spotlight because it's my favorite thing abt MF DOOM's music. A track I wanted to bring up was the beat of Hoe Cakes, which shows this misdirection thing isn't purely lyrical. The start of the beat is a very doofy sounding beat box that almost sounds like DOOM is making armpit fart noises. Then the beat transitions from this ridiculous and goofy beat to an incredibly lush and gorgeous instrumental, completely unexpected from the song's introduction. Thank you once again for making a video on this and long live the villain.

I love that DOOM is he's so smug! Constantly reminds you his style is one of a kind and he's the greatest, all while dissing anyone who touches a mic. (ITS NOT A HOBBY DONT BE SLOPPY). He takes the artform serious and delivers some rhymes that make you rewind, memorize, and dissect. Ill hear a bar from a song ive heard hundreds of time and still find new references or 'punchlines' i didnt notice before, mind-blown. Vaudeville Villian is a masterpiece.

I never realized that in dooms technique. Like I’ve listened to great day a thousand times, it’s actually my favorite song by him. "He might need some p-sychiatrist", the word "psychiatrist" has a voiceless "p" and yet he uses that first voiceless "p" because he wanted to say something elseand change mid sentence,technically not a misdirection,but another small detail on the song "Great Day".

I think one of the best ones is as his alter ego Viktor Vaughn on "A Dead Mouse". He starts the first verse saying "I only rhyme where the drums is at" And he reinforces this by straight up ending his verse in the middle of a line. The subversion ofcourse comes from you expecting him to finish the entire line but the reason he doesn't is he notices that the drums in the beat cut out. He acknowledges this by going "Oh!" Instead of finishing the line as if he just realized the drums aren't playing anymore.
My favorite doom line is from Gazillion ear when he says "traded three beans for this cow, cheap talkin'". The line alludes to the story of jack and the magic 'beanstalk', which could be made to rhyme with the other lines but instead doom leaves that rhyme to be made in the listener's mind
The earliest use of DOOM misdirection I could find was in 1994. This was back when DOOM was still going by Zev Love X. He was featured on a track called “Checkmate” by his fellow CM Mob member Earthquake. He spits: “Swish, I’m the suspicious, vicious, X So shit, I’m on a mish to gut this punk like a... You’d probably wish I say like a fish But busta how I front, punk I gut em' like a blunt”
My favorite is from "No Names" - The Mouse and The Mask. "On the phone, he sounded like a real paid (Whoa, whoa, whoa) Then we met in person, he was three shades blacker" (whoa, whoa, whoa) is spoken by a different vocalist. I love this one because he left the word out completely but the end of the rhyme couplet lets you know what it was. I've never seen this done before. Probably not exactly misdirection but more that the direction is left open until the completion of the next statement. Also, a nice one on "Great Day" - Mad Villainy "Groovy, dude! Not to prove to be rude But this stuff is like what you might put on movie food" "uhh, what is jalapenos?" This one is a strong example of misdirection since most people would expect this to be "butter" but instead its something else that also works but has a slightly different meaning.

I love his usage of this misdirection he does and I know you mentioned no names but you missed that there are 3 examples of it from that song. Btw something to keep in mind is that in order to achieve this kind of misdirection in this style of writing/rap you have to first establish a flow. The hard part isn’t the misdirection but where to place the misdirection. It can’t be too early or too late and it can’t cut off the entire flow of writing. This can be achieved in multiple ways using assonance or consonance amongst a plethora of writing devices. MF DOOM used this to his advantage by making raps that seamlessly travel from one rhyme to another which he could do all day. Trying to get an interruption to fit just enough to not sound too standoffish is what the true challenge is. I noticed this in Rhinestone Cowboy. To already have a dynamic style these misdirections feel like the cherry on top that makes you play it again just for that anticipation. These beautiful punchlines turns these raps into sequences almost. You get carried away in your imagination and then MF DOOM will slam something down to make you start guessing what he’ll say next. Misdirection turns these raps into literature journeys. RIP MF DOOM, one of the only rappers that make me want to read his rhymes like a book.

This is a topic I've wanted to talk or write about for years and never got around to it, so thank you for acting giving this a spotlight because it's my favorite thing abt MF DOOM's music.
A track I wanted to bring up was the beat of Hoe Cakes, which shows this misdirection thing isn't purely lyrical. The start of the beat is a very doofy sounding beat box that almost sounds like DOOM is making armpit fart noises. Then the beat transitions from this ridiculous and goofy beat to an incredibly lush and gorgeous instrumental, completely unexpected from the song's introduction.

Another thoroughly researched DOOM vid! I'd call these throw off's or send off's but misdirects works too. I've listened to enough of DOOM's music to have heard several of these but never realized it was such a pattern or how intentional he was with it.
i heard a great one on a rare doom cut the other day, its not a straight up misdirect, but its subtle and clever and villainous.

I love that DOOM is he's so smug! Constantly reminds you his style is one of a kind and he's the greatest, all while dissing anyone who touches a mic. (ITS NOT A HOBBY DONT BE SLOPPY). He takes the artform serious and delivers some rhymes that make you rewind, memorize, and dissect. Ill hear a bar from a song ive heard hundreds of time and still find new references or 'punchlines' i didnt notice before, mind-blown.

I never realized that in dooms technique. Like I’ve listened to great day a thousand times, it’s actually my favorite song by him. And I’ve never once that when he say “spit so many verses sometimes my jaw twitches. One thing this party could use is more” that the next word would be bitches but instead he says booze. But you explaining this to me gives me chills and makes his songs feel like new and like I need to re analyze them

I think one of the best ones is as his alter ego Viktor Vaughn on "A Dead Mouse".
He starts the first verse saying "I only rhyme where the drums is at"
And he reinforces this by straight up ending his verse in the middle of a line.
The subversion ofcourse comes from you expecting him to finish the entire line but the reason he doesn't is he notices that the drums in the beat cut out. He acknowledges this by going "Oh!" Instead of finishing the line as if he just realized the drums aren't playing anymore.

My favorite doom line is from Gazillion ear when he says "traded three beans for this cow, cheap talkin'". The line alludes to the story of jack and the magic 'beanstalk', which could be made to rhyme with the other lines but instead doom leaves that rhyme to be made in the listener's mind

The earliest use of DOOM misdirection I could find was in 1994. This was back when DOOM was still going by Zev Love X. He was featured on a track called “Checkmate” by his fellow CM Mob member Earthquake. He spits:

My favorite is from "No Names" - The Mouse and The Mask.

(whoa, whoa, whoa) is spoken by a different vocalist. I love this one because he left the word out completely but the end of the rhyme couplet lets you know what it was. I've never seen this done before. Probably not exactly misdirection but more that the direction is left open until the completion of the next statement.
Also, a nice one on "Great Day" - Mad Villainy

This one is a strong example of misdirection since most people would expect this to be "butter" but instead its something else that also works but has a slightly different meaning.

Great video love MF DOOM so I click on anything about him. I love his usage of this misdirection he does and I know you mentioned no names but you missed that there are 3 examples of it from that song.
After the example you gave he does a fill in the blank for the words “shit” and “cracka” give it another listen and you’ll hear it.

Btw something to keep in mind is that in order to achieve this kind of misdirection in this style of writing/rap you have to first establish a flow. The hard part isn’t the misdirection but where to place the misdirection. It can’t be too early or too late and it can’t cut off the entire flow of writing. This can be achieved in multiple ways using assonance or consonance amongst a plethora of writing devices. MF DOOM used this to his advantage by making raps that seamlessly travel from one rhyme to another which he could do all day. Trying to get an interruption to fit just enough to not sound too standoffish is what the true challenge is. I noticed this in Rhinestone Cowboy. To already have a dynamic style these misdirections feel like the cherry on top that makes you play it again just for that anticipation. These beautiful punchlines turns these raps into sequences almost. You get carried away in your imagination and then MF DOOM will slam something down to make you start guessing what he’ll say next. Misdirection turns these raps into literature journeys. RIP MF DOOM, one of the only rappers that make me want to read his rhymes like a book.
