  • Four outstanding young artists--Edson Scheid, violin; Isabelle Seula Lee, violin; Ana Kim, cello; and Bálint Karosi, harpsichord--perform works by Isabelle Leonarda, Georg Friedrich Handel, Elizabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre, and C.P.E. Bach, recorded in the Chapel at St Bart's Church in Manhattan for streaming on October 22, 2020, as part of the regular Midtown Concerts series usually presented live at that location.
    From the program notes by the performers, we learn that the title of the concert, taken from the nickname of the last piece on the program, represents the two extreme psychological states from medical theory of the ancient Greeks, Sanguineus and Melancholius. The artists explore the Trio Sonata genre that vividly displays both melancholic and fiery constitutions. Playing works from Isabella Leonarda, Georg Friederich Handel, Elizabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre, and C.P.E. Bach, they bring to life music spanning 150 years from all throughout Europe.
    On the program were
    * Sonata quarta a due violini, violone, e organo, Op. 16
    Isabella Leonarda (1620−1704)
    * Trio Sonata in G Minor, Op.2, No.6
    Georg Friedrich Handel (1685−1759)
    * Trio Sonata in D Major, No. 3
    Elizabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre (1665−1729)
    * Trio Sonata in C Minor, H.579, "Sanguineus und Melancholius"
    Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714−1788)
    On the GEMS production team were Adolfo Mena Cejas, videographer; GEMS Social Director Dennis Cembalo; Howard Heller, director; Christina Britton Conroy, makeup; and Paul Ross, operations (retired).
