    I remember this match. I recorded it on my old VCR and watched the tape countless times. This semi-final was SO much better than the final with Chris and Martina. Hana should have won!

    Martina's body language is quite negative here at times. She looks tired and like her mind is wandering after some points.

    Hana was part of the missing generation of Tennis. That was the generation immediately behind Chris and Martina - Hana, Tracy, Andrea and Pam. Hana by far the most successful of that generatiin winning 4 slams but had the talent to win so much more. Tracy should have dominated the 80s but retired injured, Andrea was making headway but got burnt out & Pam could never cope with Chris and Martina and could never replicate the success she had in doubles in singles. Then there was Sylvia Hanicka remember her?

      Very good analysis. Sylvia Hanika, but I could add Bettina Bunge, much more talented, Claudia Kohde Kilsch, Kathy Jordan , Zina Garrison, Helena Sukova and Manuela Maleeva. So much great talents in this era, Women’s tennis didn’t resume to Evert and Martina Navratilova

    This match was so close and then Martina destroyed Chris in the final- Chris' worst defeat in her career, 62, 60 (or 60,62?)- the first time Martina beat Chris on clay. The same thing happened a month later at the French- Hana took a set off Martina, then Martina killed Chris in the final- 63,61.

    The green clay tournaments in the spring used to be much more important than they are now. They used to be among the first outdoor tournaments after the long winter indoors and established themselves throughout the 80s. It seems as the 90s went on, they became much less important. Monica Seles for example never played the larger green clay tournaments at all during her best years.

      Monica was supposed to play Hilton Head in 1992 but fell off her bike and injured her wrist.

      @@kloatlantait's interesting - Monica took quite a lot of time off the tour in her peak years. Not saying she was doing it, but they changed the ranking system because they realised it could be gamed if players took time off. In 1992, Monica took 4 weeks off after Wimbledon, then 5 weeks off in October, then followed it with what was then the longest absence from the tour for any #1 from February 1993 until April 1993 when she returned in Hamburg.

  • @aagold76

    This tournament had been promoted as the clash on clay between Chris and Martina- they even did a commercial of them 'looking forward to it' crushing a ball (Chris) and a can (Martina) while glaring at each other. The producers were probably on the edge of their seats.

    • @thequinnster72
      @thequinnster72 Год назад

      I have thought that, possibly this is the reason Richard Kaufman overruled that ball at 1-3, 15-30 which would have given Hana break point. Sometimes something like that at such a crucial time can change the outcome, and I think here it likely did.

      Oui clairement !
      C'est sur qu'à 4/1 double break ça aurait très dur à remonter même pour MN.
      Mais je crois qu'à Oakland Hana a aussi bénéficié d'une erreur d'arbitrage manifeste.
      En tout cas quel match !

    1:17 Mandlikova robbed. Martina knew it was in, and later admitted it was in during the post-match interview. Why didn't the umpire check the mark ? It should have been 4/1 for Hana final set.
