@@andreacapulco2949 Yes, but many of those were in the amateur era and in less competitive fields e.g. at the AO, where she won 11 singles titles and 23 titles in total when many of the top players internationally did not attend. That's not to dismiss Court's great record, she is certainly in the GOAT discussion, but the competitive context is important too.
Also, Navratilova and Evert skipped numerous FOs and AOs in the 70s to focus on Team Tennis, so as to support and help grow the nascent women’s tour. Their slam records would have been even better if they had attended these, but in those days it wasn’t just all about the slams. They were only two years apart and with overlapping primes: two top 5 all-time greats competing for slams and the #1 spot throughout their careers. That is a highly competitive context.

A feast for the tennis lover - full court shot making, the real grass of the AO, a superb Kathy Jordan in action, and Martina - what can you say - every gift on display to be enjoyed. Due to Technology - this multi talented range of shots and shotmaking will never be seen, ever again... Baseline bashing anyone...?

Kathy was able to break a huge streak by Martina... going into the Wimbledon Doubles final of 1985, Martina and Pam had won 109 straight matches- including the 1984 Grand Slam. Kathy and her partner, Liz Symlie beat them in the final to stop the streak- still the longest in tennis history.

at 3-1 the commentator says this would be the 3rd leg for Martina in route for the Grand Slam... to get players to play all four majors (they didn't in the 70s- not til the early to mid 80s did that happen), the ITF offered a $1 million bonus if a player- man or woman, who could win 4 in a row, not just in one calendar year. Martina did it winning Wimbledon 83, the US 83, the Aussie 83 (held in December back then- moved to January in 1987) and the French 84- she continued her streak winning Wimbledon and US Open in 84- 6 in a row- still the record for most slams in a row. Chris won 3 in a row- 82 US and Aussie and 83 French- but Jordan beat her at Wimbledon- Chris had food poisoning, stopping her shot.

this was THE year for Martina- 86-1 record (Horvath French 4th round only loss)- of course, 84 wasn't bad either- 78-2- including 74 match win streak. 6 in a row slams 83-84, next year's loss in sf to Sukova snapped that.

Martina did have a scare with Jo Durie in the quarterfinals, winning the third set 6-4, but she was always the overwhelming favorite to win this even though Kathy played well enough to make it competitive in the second set. It was still a bit strange not to see Chrissie in the final as she withdrew from the tournament along with Andrea Jaeger and Tracy Austin.

Chris said to Martina after her 1982 win 'Thank God I finally won, it means I don't have to come back' (The Australian Open being very much the poor relation of the grand slams back then, and inconveniently held in December). In her speech after the match, Martina somewhat bitchily then told the crowd what Chris had said.

@@realfrantic although- no one really played the Australian or the French in the late 70s- none of the top players were there.... there was a tournament in the states where you made twice as much to win as the Aussie, and most of the top player played that and World Team Tennis was big in the 70s- players signed contracts and the season was during the French Open- both Chris and Martina skipped both- if not for that, they would both probably have 3-4 more Slams. It wasn't until the 80s, when the ITF offered bonuses that the 2 tournaments took off and became the equal of the other 2.

The Australian Open still somewhat the poor relation of the grand slams then. It didn't get a full 128 draw until 1988 and many of the top players skipped it (notably defending champion Chris Evert this year, who was injured). The #2 seed was Sylvia Hanika, who lost in the quarters. Martina only had to win 6 matches (there was no 4th round), beating Sayers, a young Ros Fairbank, Durie, Shriver and Jordan. The only time she was threatened was against Durie in the quarters, going to 6-4 in the final set.

If I remember correctly, that was Martina’s first tournament back after a bout with influenza that forced her to pull out of and miss defending her title at the two week Lipton tournament just before. She may have been shaking off a bit of rust, but Jordan could be a tricky player; especially if you were not at your best.

Nancy Lieberman, her abusive girlfriend, was the best for her game. She would beat the shit out of Martina if she slacked off in her workouts even a bit, and scared her to being super fit and dominant. Once she and Nancy broke up, she slacked off a bit, as she no longer had to scare her into working 120% or get the crap beat out of her by her even stronger girlfriend (the worlds best basketball player at the time, a physical beast).

    • @zeddeka

I'm not sure anyone would describe Martina as "thin" in 1985 and 1986. She was at her most muscular by a long way. You could see how much of that she subsequently lost in 1987.

During the last point for 5-4 both had an exchange at the net Kathy yells out in anger having lost the points with Martina just 4-5 feet away walking to their chairs.rather bold and bullish dfor her to act out and felt she could do that with Martina the finest grass court woman of all time. Inflated ego. When Kathy was on she could serve you off the court with her power and spins. She lacked the rest of the game but her serve, smashes , volleying is grade A but her backhand was a D , her forehand a B.gif Jordan had had a backcourt game transitions to he net with better approaches- in other word lay like Martina.

It's not a weak era when it fields 2 of the top 5 greatest players of all time in their prime playing the best tennis of their lives.
The 93-97 Graf era is truly weak. Not a single all-time great opposing Graf, no wonder Graf mopped up after #1 Seles was removed from contention. If Navratilova had only the likes of poor Mary Joe Fernandez or Sabatini between her and a slam title, she'd have 25+!
