      I agree that modern "matchy matchy" sets are 🤢. That said I have a set that is from the late 1940's early 50's and was my father's when he was a kid. Between taken care of and being well made it still looks newish but is classic enough to use in any room as storage (my father used the tall dresser to store his cd's, stored the headboard/frame because his queen didn't fit, his bedroom had the short dresser, mirror and nightstand) I use most pieces in my bedroom but the mirror is in my living room (headboard is stored for the same reason as dad). Imo classic/vintage sets are art and look great either alone or together. Lol

    Just a little advice when hemming curtains: press and hang the curtains. Pin (just a couple of pins) each panel. It’s important to pin each panel because sometimes your walls are not even and lengths will vary from panel to panel. Then measure further with each individual measurement. Sometimes just a small difference can add up and the some of your panels will end up too short or too long.

    I've definitely made the mistake (more than once) in previous homes of fitting in furniture but forgetting about clearance. Like not leaving enough space to pull back chairs around the table and forcing people to squeeze through, or blocking access to a window by having a sofa be totally across the way haha. I think I've finally learned my lesson now.

  • @annahart69

    A way to make completely missmatched furniture work (all types of wood/wood finnish or styles) is to paint a few of the pieces black or white. It can "calm" a space. I find it doesnt work as well to paint them in a "color" -even if it is a color already in the space, as it will often just "expose" that you are trying to "hide the missmatch"😉 Also its very important to do do a good job of painting the furniture to "blend" them in to the space seamlessly (if that is what you want it to do🙂)👍🏼 Ps I am enjoying your videos alot! This guy is teaching universal principles that would help anyone. He doesn't have a style agenda or bias based on only what he happens to admire. This is rare in any decorator even those at very top tend with Master Class lectures. They just explain how to get their particular look. He is going to the basics and teaching what would work for anyone with any style. I wish he lived nearby I would hire him to do my basement.
    I wanted to say on custom curtains which I swear by. I have never bought ready made or even semi -custom for our houses (yes for apartments) even when we were younger and on a budget. I would go to a local fabric shop and asked for recommendations of seamstresses that are good but affordable and I always got great results at very affordable rates. Also I have seen ready made look like custom if they are professionally installed. Good installation is everything on curtains. I have a very good seamstress and she hangs my curtains and she will make so many tiny adjustments till they are perfect. I have watched her a thousand times and I think I could do a pretty good job but I still don't DIY my installations.

    My curtains/drapes are thermal self defense. There are huge windows in my house and thermal curtains really are helpful keeping the outdoors outdoors. But I tried the ones that are 80+ inches long and it seemed to trap all kinds of stuff like pet hair, wadded up leenex, toys, bones.

  • @brendamatthews4435
    @brendamatthews4435 Год назад +2

    I sewed custom made drapes from the time I was 16 until 22 for interior decorators in their workroom - partially paying for my university education. I can make anything, from bedspreads to lampshades, roman shades, Austrian shades, any type of window treatment or cloth décor.
    But I buy the thick rod to go across the ceiling and buy the quality fabric narrow panels with the large rivets. Cheap. I do hem them just off the floor; I hate them dragging, too. When I pull them across, they are flat. I'm not doing 2.5 to 3x the width - it's not worth the cost, plus the panels are too thick stacked on the sides - still producing the effect of drawing the eye up.
    Then again, my décor reflects my ocean views - beachy, slightly industrial.
    I'd rather spend the money on art.

    This man knows what he is talking about. I have spent years restoring homes and sometimes learning the hard way. I had a 25’x20’ window where the sun just poured in from 2:00pm to sundown. The four challenges were finding curtains that fit, having durable hardware, installing them properly, and making sure the quality of the fabric could withstand years of sun exposure. It was the first time I needed custom curtains and a professional installer. It cost over $5,000.00 but well worth it. My youngest daughter, as a preschooler, tried to use the curtains to scale the wall. She was putting all her weight and strength on the curtain when I found her. There was no damage to the curtains , wall, or hardware. We have since moved on to other projects but 13 years later those curtains still look new.
    Keep this in mind when looking at a new place to live. If large windows don’t have any “window treatments” plan on adding money to the true cost of living there. If the previous owner has already installed professional window treatments, appreciate the money and time you won’t have to spend (unless they need replacement). Windows are a bit like landscaping, it’s more expensive than you think and no one thinks about it unless it’s missing or needs replacing.

    I really love your videos on design! You are so thorough and make this all so easy to understand. I also really like that you mention sustainability and excess plastic waste when you're giving advice. I feel like so many RUclipsrs overlook this.
    In terms of smaller windows that don't really reach far down the wall, would those still look alright with floor length curtains? I live in the UK and it's common to have smaller windows and I'm afraid they'd be dwarfed or end up looking silly with really dramatic drapes. Thank you for making such great content!

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for asking! Thats of course difficult to answer without seeing the window, but if full length curtains don't feel right to you a roman blind is another great option that you could use to create height!

    I love your traditional style and our house in Michigan was very traditional. Something I found out, however, is that moving to Florida can change your style! Florida is much more casual than up north and pieces that I brought to our new house in Florida looked really out of place! I found that I now lean more toward transitional design with a touch of coastal mixed in. I, too, love blue accents and have a touch of blue in every room. I loved you talking about flow in this video, and at the same time it makes me feel really sad because our kitchen is between our two main living areas and the flow is not good! But knowing that is half the battle when you're redoing a space :)..thank you for all you do!

      OMG! I love your video. I am a new subscriber and for the first time I see colours on a wall. For me, I live in a condo and I have 18 renown paintings of all size to put on all my walls and they are very colourful. I love that you have no real trend, like everything in the house is in 1 colour or 2. 2ould you give me an advice about placing my paintings. I know that I will have to choose the right place for each one of them. I just choose my paint and the wall will be Soft Chamois by Benjamin Moore except for the entrance walls of my two bedroom Natural cream, same plate of colour. All the wood works below the walls, the doors, etc. will be white. I adore your video and I also adore the colour blue. I live in the province of Quebec, Canada. ❤❤❤

    Cellular shades are great if you're renting. We are between homes until we build again, found a great rental that has glass on the back door, and a window next to the front door running the length of the door. Cellular shades from Lowes look great, went up in no time and are an easy affordable option since it's not a home we will own.

    Another way to get the “custom” drapery look w ready made is to buy 2 sets & sew/hem tape (depending on how heavy the fabric is) 2 panels together lengthwise before hanging instead of having someone else do it. It’s pretty easy if you’re a decent straight sew-er. Also, as he advised - don’t skimp on the rod! If your budget is REALLY tight you can even do this w good quality Walmart curtains & you’ll get that spectacular looking fullness custom draperies come standard with and the seam can be hidden within the folds once hung. Excellent advice & new sub! Thanks! - An ex-drapery coordinator/designer & installer that grew up in the biz 😁

    More great advice as usual. I do prefer the look of floor length curtains, but in the living room we don't want them that long because a certain feline won't let us have nice things. I actually used a couch in front of one window and an ottoman chest under the other to hide that space between the 63" curtains (omg monsters live here) and the floor. It please her feline majesty too.
