Very thankful for your kind attitude about the comfort of your home for older people. I can't hop up into a barstool or sit in a low sofa (I'm 73 and have some mobility issues) and you're the first young person who ever mentioned how that might affect your guests. Not that you should have to take that into consideration in every room. I also really like your encouragement that home decor should reflect your life and be unique to you, not the average cookie-cutter art.

Oh I have one to add! As someone with chronic migraines who is very light sensitive, intense overhead lighting is very difficult for me to hang out in. Even worse than that is any light fixture with exposed bulbs that are at eye level, so if I'm stuck in a seat that looks directly at an exposed bulb on a fixture or lamp, I'm probably having a bad time. Even for those with a less extreme condition than myself, I think most appreciate spaces with good ambient lighting at night.

It's so nice to hear you say that you like seeing the pictures of family and friends because they're important to people and so many channels just bash them. People like to be reminded of their loved ones so I don't understand why so many channels here don't like that. It's always so lovely to hear people speak about their loved ones because they light up when they do.

Thank you for addressing barstools. I have functional neurological disorder, and for whatever reason, I always seem to have an FND fit when I'm on a barstool. Then I can't get out of the chair without help because it's too high off the ground and I've temporarily lost body control. But in between fits, I don't seem disabled at all. Sometimes it's the people you least expect who need extra accessibility considerations.

Dog owners need to bathe their dogs. They need to wash the dog bedding, pillows, special places, etc. They need to vacuum or sweep up the dog hair,
especially on the sofas and chairs where guests will sit. Walking into a house that smells "doggy" is unpleasant. And all the candles in the world can't overcome
that kind of smell. The same can be said for cat owners, bird owners, etc.

Thank you for mentioning the SCENT! I can’t tolerate artificial scents. Among other things they make my larynx swell. I never visit a 2. time anywhere with Glade plugins or cheap candles. Aside from the obvious damage these scents do to chemically sensitive people and PETS with their sensitive noses, the chemicals accumulate in the fatty tissue of the human body.

Glade Plug-Ins are the worst! I used to do a lot of substitute teaching push-in to classes, and there was one class in one school that had Glade Plug-Ins. I refused to go to that class; since it's against District policy to use Plug-Ins, I got a free period every time.
My daughter-in-law recommended a place for me to get my legs waxed before a cruise; they had scented candles and diffusers that gave me a migraine. Next trip, I have to try a different place!

What I find makes a home so uninviting is the powder room/guest bathroom. I hate when they have old/dirty/colored/holiday hand towels (I think they should be white and I prefer them folded at the side of the sink so I know it is clean), minimal toilet paper on the roll, and no extra rolls in full view, and a strong candle burning in there.

i love how Garret does give realistic solutions to desing specially when we talk about hosting people or house parties, using your dinner chairs to seat you guest at the living room is so relatable and functional, most people will only limit to tell you to consider the number of seating for every guest, but cmon those "fancy" massive AD living rooms with huge couches look so ugly and end up having a really unpersonal lobbby vibe. I don't care how much you love to throw partys at home im quite sure that having 5+ couches at the living room aint something pretty to see every day.

I really appreciate this one, especially your comments about scent! I have severe asthma and have literally had to leave a friend and relatives home because the overwhelming scents triggered me into a an asthma attack. One thing that should be mentioned is the low furniture in guest rooms. I once was invited to stay at a young relatives home when I was traveling. Their guest room had a very low bed, barely off the floor. The room was very elegant and nicely decorated, but that bed...OOF!

It's maybe not decoration per se, but part of how a guest is welcomed and how the mood is set:
Televisions should be switched off, unless we are meeting to watch something specific together, like Eurovision. Otherwise, a TV in the Background is something I find rude and uninviting. A good choice of background music on the other hand is a wonderful subtle gesture of respect and effort to make the space feel inviting.

My husband is as sensitive to scents (maybe more so) as you are. Other than the opening of windows to let the fresh air in, what we will do - on occasion if we have guests over - is just cut a few lavender sprigs and place in very small vases. One in the bathroom they will use and one in the bedroom they will use if they are spending the night. Lavender grows well in pots so a plant can be kept on the deck if a person does not have a garden.

Great tips as always! To go along with scent, I think temperature is always important. You mention older guests, and they won’t be at all comfortable if a house is only 65 degrees in the winter. And nothing is worse than a dank and tepid house in the summer because the owners “don’t like” air conditioning. It should be on for the guests, imo.

My neighbor has the scent overload, I stopped by there one day to give her some fresh eggs, and I almost gagged on the smells, we chatted for a few minutes, all the while trying to get back outside to the porch. When I finally made it to car, my hubby wrinkled his nose and asked, "did she spray you with perfume?" We had to roll down the windows so the scents would leave. Ha ha

I’ve only have two pillows on my love seat, yet when my daughter comes over, she always removes them. They are super comfortable and yet she prefers the leather love seat without the pillows. With scents, yes it’s always important to think about sensitivities especially if you have pets or small children. I love Art. The only coffee table books that I have accessible are my art history books. Art on the wall is so important as it expresses who you are and a good conversation piece. Love your videos Garrett, they always make so much sense without prejudice against those who’s tastes are not exactly yours. I would feel so comfortable for you to come into my home…um, not right now though as we are in the middle of renovating 😅, and it smells like fresh paint, maybe later 😉❤️🇨🇦

Thank you for doing a video about furniture ratio! After having to move three times in the past 10 years to 3 different States I have dealt with the difficulty of making furniture that I love work in new spaces. The last move I sized down. What a challenge. I am scent sensitive also. Even walking down the soap and cleaning product aisle in a grocery store. Thank you for discussing it! BTW all of your fury family members are adorable and so well groomed. Many people do not realize the cleaning maintenance required with Cornelius and his skin folds. The folds that make him so adorable. He seems to have quite the personality. Love that you put them on camera. I have an adorable lil Frenchie Girl.

I want cornealis to come over when I have guests what a cutie pie! My parent-in-laws were so kind to buy us a really nice large sectional couch so that we can have family members over It wasn't cheap... Unfortunately it's a leather couch that was very comfortable in the shop but is so billowy and you get stuck in between the seats that I never use it except for holidays when I know everybody's probably not very comfortable on it and I cannot afford to get another couch right now! I feel terrible, because I would love to use that space and be comfortable and I want others to be comfortable as well so I like how you speak about thinking of others

Great episode. I always enjoy your perspective.
However ... as a Canadian if you don't take your shoes off when you come into a home you would be considered rude. Removing shoes/boots, and for at least half of the year, a big poofy winter coat is just considered good manners here in Canada. When I was in college and didn't have a TV (yes, I'm old) I used to have colouring books and a basket of crayons and small puzzles on my coffee table. It gave folks things to do with their hands during visits.
Thanks for the advice and give your puppies a pat for me.

i'd like to add to the list, so many living rooms I see online that discriminate against older guests. Younger viewers of Garret's age who are fit and fully able bodied may not realise how many older people have lingering injuries, e.g. knee and ankle and back problems, which may not be apparent. these invisible problems can make it hard for them to lower themselves onto a low sofa, and even harder or painful for them to get themselves out of it -- especially if the sofa has no arm rests. If your older guests make a beeline for the kitchen/dining table to sit down, it is usually a sign! Unless you are never going to socialise with anyone over 50 ( e.g. no parents, aunties, uncles grandparents etc visiting ever), every lounge room should always have at least one if not 2 chairs that are easy to get in and out of,( i.e. the seat is medium height and has arms); what is known as "a comfortable armchair." The seat should be short ,not long ( as older people have shorter legs generally) and should be properly padded, not hard. A sofa will never do, regardless of how expensive it is, as it will only have one armrest next to the guest for them to lean on(if any!) and will be too squishy and low to get out of- or even too awkward to lean forward to reach their cup of coffee. Older persons should never be offered the sofa to sit on. There should always be another option - a firm padded arm chair of reasonable seat height. It's dead easy to find really stylish ones; and your older guests will no longer dread having to sit in your loungeroom!

I also hate the low couches. They are just too hard to get up from. I like to keep the coffee table clear though as I need a space to put a tray of refreshments when people come over. There are other places to put decor like the side tables etc.

  • @pageremick5504
    @pageremick5504 Год назад +3

I'm so glad you pointed out coffee tables and spoke of art or flowers on them as that adds height. I have seen TOOOO many coffee tables that I call 'deserts'.... as the only accessories are flat magazines or the ubiquitous coffee table book and a flat plate or ashtray. HEIGHT! Don't be afraid of height on coffee tables and as Garrett says, have a few accessories that not only give you pleasure to view, but show your personality and style to others. A safe rule of thumb for those afraid of what to do is one tall, one medium and one small accessory. One small can be a small collection of small items and tall can be a candelabra, sculpture or spray of tall flowers. Medium can be a fat vase or candle. Pull out a bunch of your favorite things and just try them out in all different combinations until you find something that looks interesting from all angles. Ditch the desert and go bold! Thanks, Garrett for disclosing all the other ways decor can fall short when entertaining and you are so right about those bar height stools... there is NO graceful way to get on or off of one short of using a crane.

Good point about the bar height stools. I'm only 5'2 and it's always so awkward trying to sit down & get up. To me the biggest mistake is having too much clutter around. I find it so stressful to look at it. My eyes can't find a place to stop & rest.
