  • The size is the same like 2000 honda civic battery, you will need to grind battery posts to make cables fir as prius terminal posts are thinner.
UPDATE, it has been 3 moths since I put in this battery, no problems at all, I even forgot about it.
I hope this video helps you save money.

Nobody mentioned that in an accident the standard lead acid battery can leak it's acid. If the car is on it's side or roof, or in a ditch, that acid can seriously injure or even kill a passenger. It's a rare occurrence, but this is why internal batteries are ALWAYS AGM. AGM batteries don't have fluid that leaks out. When the battery is outside the passenger compartment, leaking acid is not much of a problem. As for venting of gasses, that also is a safety thing. You don't want those gasses building up inside the vehicle. There are just TWO additional reasons to go with the AGM. Third, the AGM will last longer (in this application) than standard lead acid car batteries, actually costing you less in the long run.

How did you make it fit on the terminals ? I had to replace the negative with a bigger one, and the positive I had to open it to fit, it was an emergency but I’d like to make it right

The Toyota Prius uses a AGM Type battery which does not have the liquid acid and lead like batteries that charge using a alternator. The Prius uses a electronic charging circuit. What comes with the Pruis is a lead a deep cycle battery that uses a gel like substance. The Optima YellowTop Deep-Cycle 12-Volt Battery #S46B24 is a good choice. I like to save money also, but I don’t want to save $100 and screw up thousand of dollars worth of electronics or cause the car not to run properly. Do the research, putting the 80-90 dollar lead acid battery will be a big mistake.

Hello, couldn't find anything about why not to put lead-acid battery. Even the OEM one is this type of battery? :)

Hello Pyrhelness, If you call Autozone or Advance auto parts or Toyota, they will tell you not to use the lead acid battery, only batteries like the OPTIMA deep cycle battery, it has no liquid. Lead acid batteries come with a chemistry configured to produce lots of cranking amps (not needed in a hybrid because the high voltage battery pack cranks the engine) and deep discharge batteries that produce fewer amps but can be draw down many more times before they fail. The deep discharge type is the better choice in a hybrid because that is all it does. It gets slowly discharged when the car is parked. I just replaced the one in my wife's 2010. If you do use the lead acid one, I'm sure it will work, but why take the chance, the car is designed for the other type. And with the lead one you have to grind down the terminals to fit it, that should tell you something right there. Good luck.

Hi Frank, thank you for your comment. I'm in EU and all Prius cars here have lead-acid batteries as OEM. The AGM type are also lead-acid, but electrolyte is hold in high-absorbing mat between the plates. Forgot to take a photo of the original battery that came with the car, but the electrolyte was liquid with caps on the top of the battery. AGM are recommended for all "regular" vehicles with start-stop systems because they don't charge the battery when the engine is stopped when in traffic. With hybrids such a problem does not exist, if the car is in "Ready" mode, the 12v battery is charging from the hybrid battery, even when the ICE is not running. This can be tested with a volt meter (multi-meter) on the 12v battery connectors. Today I bought regular 45Ah/330A lead-acid battery with liquid electrolyte with 2-year warranty for about $40, the AGMs here are ~$230. Even if I change it every 2 years, it will be much, much, much cheaper with regular 12v battery. I don't say that they are better, just that they are much cheaper :) Cheers!

I glad that works for you. One thing I'm not sure about is the venting, the OEM comes with a vented battery, check that out to be sure if it is ok. Cant beat that price! Probably will give you more than 2 years. I know the AGM's are so expensive. I guess they have to find ways to make extra money. The best to you, dive safely.
