My wife reported to me this afternoon that the car started having issues starting and that she'd see a message flash across the dash (something about the battery maybe?). After replicating the problem and seeing that the hybrid battery was nearly fully charged, I drove around a bit, mistakingly thinking the alternator just needed to charge the engine battery (finding out afterwards that the Prius doesn't have an alternator). I've replaced car batteries before, but because the Prius was "different" I didn't know what I was getting myself into. A quick search on RUclips surfaced your video. After watching it, I felt confident to be able to do the replacement myself (it's nearly similar to replacing a traditional car battery, but getting in and out are unique to the Prius). This battery will likely outlast the car (this is the first time we've had to change it in ten years), but was worth doing myself so my wife wasn't stranded somewhere.

Great useful video. A few notes I might add based on my experience: * If you can get your car to an auto parts store, do so. They can test your old battery with a load tester for free and they give you credit when you turn in your old battery. * I was unable to get a conclusive test using the red battery terminal under the hood. It was necessary to open up the battery access in the right rear. * Made a misstake. I removed my old battery, shut the rear hatch, and exchanged my old for the new in the store. The issue was that when I returned to my car I was unable to open the rear hatch because the hatch latch requires electricity. With some contortion I was able to get myself and the new battery into the rear of the car from the back door. * The new battery cost me $220 after the core charge credit. * The old battery appeared to be the original. So it had lasted 11 years.

Thank you for making the video. My 2013 Prius would not “Start” when depressing the brake and press the Start Button; it would be in “Accessory“ mode. I took it to the dealer and found out that the battery was weak. They wanted $390 for the battery and labor. I asked how much is the battery itself , it was $262 (after returning my old battery). I asked them not to install but that I would buy the battery. This video gave me the confidence that I could do this so thank you. I read that even with the negative cable removed, you still have to be careful not to ground out the positive with your wrench since there's power to the cable from the hybrid battery. Also, it would be a good idea to connect a charger or some other 12V supply (under the hood) so you don't lose your various settings maintained by the battery when you disconnect it..

Hey buddy, thanks for doing this demonstration! Not only saved me money but time as well since I didn’t have to schlep back and forth to local garage. Best part was I didn’t have to worry that the Prius motor would shut off halfway to garage and I’d have to jump it again. And again. And again… Seriously, thanks!
Great video. It was very helpful. Here's a tip, once you pull the old battery out don't close the hatch, it locks. I removed the old battery and closed the hatch and drove my other car to the part store to swapped it out with a new one so I could get the core refund. The hatch lock needs the battery to unlock. I had to entry the car from the backseat to install the new battery. If you are a big guy that might not be too easy.
Thanks. This was helpful. We have a 2015 Prius. My wife usually drives it. So had the key fob in my pocket, touched the driver handle to unlock and the horn starts blowing, weakly. I used the key fob to deactivate antitheft and get into the driver seat. Put my foot on the brake, then pressed the POWER button and the LED turns amber. On the display it showed aux battery low. Did not attempt a jump, assumed the 12v batt was toast. After research, looking at this video, I decided it is an easy DIY. Downloaded the procedure from the Toyota.com owner webpage. Replacement battery used is the highly rated Optima Batteries model DS46B24R. Unfortunately, was unable to open the rear hatch, so had to work form inside the car. Folded down the back seats then was able to remove everything as in the video. Confirmed, only had to set date and time, radio and of course ODO settings were preserved. On a side note, the 12v batt is used to power up the ECO and ancillary electronics. The ECU in turn starts the engines.
Neha Raspann You can open the rear hatch manually, OR, you can always hook a battery or jump starter under the front hood to the jump start terminals......hit unlock and get in the back.....easy
things to add: 1. always disconnect neg first, then positive so your tool will not arch if you make a mistake. Reverse (positive, then neg back) like the video. Would be nice to explain why 2. don't close your lid when disconnected or you will have to craw from the back seat and reach the latch inside to release (electronic lock). 3. recommend using same battery and why (venting in car space, size, AGM for crash/acid reason, etc...). 2x the price though.
Nicely explained... this video helped me a lot to replace my Prius' 12 V battery. FYI to others, if your battery is fully discharged then you can take it to O'Reiley's who will recharge it for free overnight... Thanks for the video.
This is very simple, just follow the instructions and you won’t go wrong. Most first time DIYers start with light bulbs and eventually move to the battery replacement. If you are still unsure, automotive stores will replace them for free for you if you buy their battery.
A. H. Yes, I followed this step by step and it worked just like the video. My wife was actually impressed like I knew what I was doing. Don’t forget the vent! Also I got the replacement battery from the Toyota dealership. It was pricey (about $100) but I read somewhere that other replacement batteries didn’t have optimal charge for the hybrid. Not sure if that’s right, but I decided not to take a chance.
Thank you so much for this video! As luck would have it we purchased the same battery before even looking at your video😂 Your instructions were perfect, and I was able to get the battery swapped out in no time!
I followed the instructions here and it made it really easy for me, so thank you! I have a 3rd gen Prius. The only thing I was nervous about was closing the hatch door after removing the bad battery. I feared it would lock with no way to unlock it. Maybe it can't lock without a battery so my fears may have been misguided, but I didn't want to take any chances. I left it open while I went to the auto parts store to process the old for new battery, otherwise, there would have been an extra core charge.
Well done! I bought the same battery, AGM type for $200. Perfect fit in the Prius V 2015. I understand traditional lead-acid is not good for Prius. It took 30 minutes. The + terminal was tight but I got it off after some pulling. Did not lose any settings. My battery was 6 years old, OEM and registered 11.6V on the car's diagnostics. I decided 6 years was enough.
Nice kept it simple.. to the point.. I like the 3rd generation Prius better for changing the battery.. easier than a second generation.. I got 216000 miles on mine.. I use the Mobil 1 extended life.. the car is tight as the day I got it..at 122k.
Thank you so much! This video was perfect, showing every detail as you did it. There was another video by someone else and I couldn't understand a word he was saying or ever see the work as he did it. You video was excellent. thank you again
@@ahiker9477 I can't remember. I just went to the local O'Reilly auto part and had them look it up. I did have to go to a second O'Reilly that was a few miles away as they didn't have it in stock. Think it was like $150 for the battery or something, not a basic car battery since it has to be able to handle starting the engine up more often than a conventional car.
Thank you for posting! I have a Plugin Prius so the entire back floor does not come out (I think half of it covers the plugin batteries), but basically skipping the first 2 steps, the rest about removing the battery from the compartment on the right worked. Thanks again.
Paid over $500 yesterday at Tony Graham Toyota here in Ottawa. No much choice when you don't know how to fix it plus where to get the correct size 12 volt AGM battery. part of the problem is the design of the Prius.... I understand that the 12 volt isn't used much as a result they age pre-maturely... especially in the -30 degrees weather here. oh well
2:38 Anyone know what’s connected to that bracket, I didn’t break the wire or the connected part but I did break the plastic clip that attached it all to the bracket.
I called 4 places in South Florida today. Advance Auto Parts charges $195 for battery (no installation) with 3-year warranty. Toyota dealer (Deerfileld) charges $199 (installed) with 2-year warranty. Batteries Plus charges $199 (no installation) with 4-year warranty. Costco does not sell the auxiliary battery. I'm stumped -- the only difference is the warranty... I may as well go to dealer, it seems. Your video makes it seem super easy - I was ready and willing to do it myself!
Danielle P yeah, the bad part about Costco is they don’t carry the Prius battery, I believe I bought mine at oreilly and it was expensive. I would go with dealership since it’s free install and 4 year warranty. Hopefully they don’t give you a hard time if there’s issues with the battery before the warranty expires. 👍🏼
Thank you so much for your help My question is if I disconnect battery do I lose m car memory or it would be saved because Prius dose have main battery!?
Thanks for the video! Advance Auto Parts had a warning about needing professional installation for this battery, but I couldn't find anything especially hazardous in the Prius Haynes manual. I think the warning is in place because it's absolutely vital to reconnect the exhaust, since it needs external ventilation and could otherwise contaminate the cabin air.
Great video, straightforward! One question... Will I lose any important data or settings in the car's computer when the battery is unhooked? Do I have a limited amount of time to get the new one hooked up?
Thank you for an awesome instructional video. How often should the 12v battery be replaced? I have a 2014 Prius and it’s now 2024 and I’ve never replaced it, am I past due? Thank you.

2. don't close your lid when disconnected or you will have to craw from the back seat and reach the latch inside to release (electronic lock).
3. recommend using same battery and why (venting in car space, size, AGM for crash/acid reason, etc...). 2x the price though.
Removing battery: Take off your BLACK boots and then you can remove your RED socks.
Installing battery: Put on your RED socks before your BLACK boots.
Nicely explained... this video helped me a lot to replace my Prius' 12 V battery. FYI to others, if your battery is fully discharged then you can take it to O'Reiley's who will recharge it for free overnight...
Thanks for the video.
Fuk O'Reillys.. I'd rather go to Autozone or Advance
Dude, perfect video. Clear, concise and straight to the point. Excellent video!!
Great video. Was able to perform this service thanks to your explicit and accurate directions.
Just followed this vid to replace the 12v in my 2014 Prius, perfect walkthrough! Thanks!
I know nothing about cars but i’m about to do this for my prius. Thank you for this tutorial!
This is very simple, just follow the instructions and you won’t go wrong. Most first time DIYers start with light bulbs and eventually move to the battery replacement. If you are still unsure, automotive stores will replace them for free for you if you buy their battery.
This video royaly saved me today when my battery died suddenly and I had to change it in auto store parking lot since they wouldn't. thank you
Nice!
Another excellent video. I followed it and got the car fixed. i love this guy. I used a AGL replacement which even had the vapor exhaust tube fitting.
Thank U so much. Love your calming, no nonsense voice. That was ez.
Thank you so very much for your video!! Very helpful 👍
You're very welcome!
Well Done on this video! Loved the fact you mentioned the Wrench size, and sped up the screwing/unscrewing of the bolts and nuts!
Thanks!
Got the confidence to change my 2013 battery today thanks to your video. Thanks for the valuable demo!
Is it really as easy and straight forward as the video made it look? I don't want to screw it up, but the autoshops want $100 - $250 to install it!
@@levelupinvesting5539 thank you so much. I wasn't sure if I should get the Toyota battery or an Optima one.
Your vid's are a lifesaver. LOL! Seriously, thank you so much for creating them.
Thank you so much for this video! As luck would have it we purchased the same battery before even looking at your video😂 Your instructions were perfect, and I was able to get the battery swapped out in no time!
Lol nice work!
Best instructional video. No extra gibberish talks.
Old lady from Australia says thank you about to do the task now
😁
I followed the instructions here and it made it really easy for me, so thank you! I have a 3rd gen Prius. The only thing I was nervous about was closing the hatch door after removing the bad battery. I feared it would lock with no way to unlock it. Maybe it can't lock without a battery so my fears may have been misguided, but I didn't want to take any chances. I left it open while I went to the auto parts store to process the old for new battery, otherwise, there would have been an extra core charge.
there's a release on the inside. It's rather hidden, though. Ask RUclips!
I decided 6 years was enough.
fantastic video....to the point, good details and no rambling
Nice kept it simple.. to the point.. I like the 3rd generation Prius better for changing the battery.. easier than a second generation.. I got 216000 miles on mine.. I use the Mobil 1 extended life.. the car is tight as the day I got it..at 122k.
I had a Prius 12v battery last 12.5 years. Amazing! This video was excellent.
Wow, that’s way longer than most. The most I’ve heard was 6-7 years
Excellent. Short, concise and to the point ! Thank you.
Thank you so much for the video. Currently bought a Prius and getting to know the basics of my prius.
Thank you so much! This video was perfect, showing every detail as you did it. There was another video by someone else and I couldn't understand a word he was saying or ever see the work as he did it. You video was excellent. thank you again
To the point. Explains it simple and quick. No stupid music. Thanks
Sweet & Simple & Precise.... your video makes things nice!!! Thanks for taking the time to do this!!!
Thanks!
Thanks for video, matched the process. Just did it in about 10min total.
Is it really as easy and straight forward as the video made it look? I don't want to screw it up, but the autoshops want $100 - $250 to install it!
A. H. Yes, easy enough to install for yourself. Just make sure you have the correct battery.
@@nelsonsbrian one last question. What brand did you choose? I'm not sure if I'd be better off with a Toyota battery or an Optima Yellowtop.
Clutch! Heading over to my mom's to pull her battery and needed to know which tools to bring along.
note : this is the same for a 3rd gen prius type 4 ( the plugin prius )
such quality video and graphics and explained simply for newbees!!
Finally someone that knows you should always remove the negative first..!
I love all of your videos. they're very detailed, easy to follow and well lit. thank you
Thank you for posting! I have a Plugin Prius so the entire back floor does not come out (I think half of it covers the plugin batteries), but basically skipping the first 2 steps, the rest about removing the battery from the compartment on the right worked. Thanks again.
glad to help :)
Sorry to be repetitive, but thank you for the clear video and easy to follow instructions. You've earned my subscribe.
Happy New Year! 🎉
Thank you, you were clear and to the point.
You're welcome!
This video was super helpful and so easy to follow! Thank you!
Thank you for this video. Just replaced my 10 yr old battery with ease.
Thank you, I watched this video and then swapped out my battery. Very Easy!
Thank you! Very helpful. Dealership wanted 100 dollars for this simple job!! Give me a break. Thanks for the video. Super helpful.
Awesome video. I just wanted to make sure I could safely replace one of these on a Prius without damaging the car or getting zapped! 😅❤
Great video, wish I had seen this prior to paying $418 to replace one at Toyota Canada :(
Gail Skidmore ouch, way over priced on labor.
@@NutzAboutBolts that was battery and labour and in Canada, but I agree, way overpriced!
Gail Skidmore I believe I bought my battery for 260$ or something. I guess they charge labor for a 10min job as an hr. Which roughly is 120$...
Paid over $500 yesterday at Tony Graham Toyota here in Ottawa. No much choice when you don't know how to fix it plus where to get the correct size 12 volt AGM battery. part of the problem is the design of the Prius.... I understand that the 12 volt isn't used much as a result they age pre-maturely... especially in the -30 degrees weather here. oh well
Straightforward and clean camera view! Thx!!!
Np 👍🏼
It’s insane to think free YT videos are better than actual mechanic training courses from years ago that cost big money.
😁
thank you so much for this!!!!
You're so welcome!
Thank you for a clear, sensible presentation.
Very helpful. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for your help
My question is if I disconnect battery do I lose m car memory or it would be saved because Prius dose have main battery!?
Thanks for the video! Advance Auto Parts had a warning about needing professional installation for this battery, but I couldn't find anything especially hazardous in the Prius Haynes manual. I think the warning is in place because it's absolutely vital to reconnect the exhaust, since it needs external ventilation and could otherwise contaminate the cabin air.
0:43 that plastic cover has a button on it with a lot of cabels connected to it - can I replace it without remove this cover?
Great video, straightforward! One question...
Will I lose any important data or settings in the car's computer when the battery is unhooked? Do I have a limited amount of time to get the new one hooked up?
I too would want to know this one - how did you get on ?
This was so helpful - thank you. Just replaced mine today.
Nice work 👍🏼
This looks quite easy. Thanks so much for the video!
I should've watched this video before coming to the dealership
It doesn't need a battery keeper to prevent losing learned computer settings, stereo security code and so forth? Maybe the larger battery does that?
Thank you for an awesome instructional video. How often should the 12v battery be replaced? I have a 2014 Prius and it’s now 2024 and I’ve never replaced it, am I past due? Thank you.
usually it last for 4-6 years, if its still good then I would be on the look out for it to die anytime now.
@@NutzAboutBolts thank you. I will replace it this weekend thanks to your help
Great presentation. Looking forward to replacing my 12v soon.
Quick question, what is the CCA of that battery? Mine just died in my car and I need a new one but don’t know what battery is the correct one to buy. I have a 2010 pruis
Thank you so much! I used this video when I had to do the same in my car.
Thanks for the information. After connecting my new battery, I opened the car door and the alarm went off. Had to push the unlock button on the remote.
Well made video, short and clean. never waist time clicking on a video more than five minutes.
