Great review. I had the Zacuto for my GH5 and Found it really hard to use and not well thought out. I’ve had my eye on the black mamba and think now I will pull the trigger and purchase.
That cage is so small and minimalistic. I like cages so that I can mount the HDMI cable and handles. Although, I agree not on the right side as the natural grip is perfect. Maybe you'll need to purchase a specific HDMI cable lock separately. BTW, that camera strap on right side sits right on the crook of my thumb. I think I will remove it too. Thank you.
Yes, it is nice and barebones, its rare I ever left the cage on my GH5 but this one spends much more time on the camera because its just lighter and less intrusive. I usually just remove those clips and then replace one with a quick release wrist strap.
Like I say, it's still the best designed cage out there currently. It really makes you realise how bad the old design was when you go back to use the old version.
Just got mine today. My primary need was just to have a cold shoe mount for audio gear, though it's nice for low angle filming. Did I miss something in the video, is there a place to store that Allen wrench in the rig like the other tool?
Ah I didn't get that in my set, maybe that is part of the full set. I only got the flat head / small screw tool (M3 2.5) that fits in the bottom magnetically. The set was pretty minimal to be fair, no instructions etc.
Great content as usual Steve. May I ask you a question, I was planning to use a lav mic (Senheiser) and an omni too, both at the same time with the XLR adapter. Is there any bracket to do that, I mean, is it even possible with that smallrig or another? Thanks from Spain!
Thank you, I really appreciate it. I don't use the XLR-1 but when I run out two mics I tend to mount them on a dual cold shoe mount which I mount to the cage using this type of thing - amzn.to/39qffzJ There are all kinds of things you can mount to a cage, it really depends on the size of the mics and practicality of accessing and using them.
My GH5 small rig cage allows me to fit my XLR1 on as well as a 15mm rod which I mount a monitor and mic on ... I can't see one that allows me to do that ...
I don't own the XLR-1 adapter but I think the shape of the cage would stop it from sitting on the hotshoe. SmallRig do a different shaped cage for the GH6 but I am not sure if that would work. I think that would be one for their support team.
Hello, I thank you to share this interesting video. Out of curiosity: with thsi cage and its handle, is it possible to put the eye on the viewfinder? Or does the handle move the eye away or disturb the view? This is an important thing for me. Thank you
Hi, I use my left eye for the viewfinder and can use it with the cage no problem. The cage doesn't really protrude at the back the handle can be moved to either side or you could just use a side strap instead if it was getting in the way.
I don't have the S5IIX but the GH6 has internal pro res options, 4K 120 fps, HD 300fps and better stabilisation and lens adaptability. There are obviously advantages to full frame though and some nice new features in that camera.
Steve, I want to use my strap sometimes when I go out or when shooting with a tripod is not possible. Do you know if small rig makes something that attaches to the cage so I can use the strap in the same way as I would without the cage?
Hey, the cage does have mounting points for a top or right side strap. You could mount most ring type connections to it. I'm not sure if SmallRig make one but I use a third party wrist and neck strap and it works just fine. Just be aware that the cage does add some weight to your wrist or neck if you plan to work that way for long periods of time.
@@stevelitton Hey Steve Thank you for getting back to me. After I wrote you I did figure that out and put my strap there and it's pretty and works well. The only drag is I'd like it so I attach and re attach without all that work. I'm sure I'll get it down to a few minutes. Would you mind sharing with the name of your 3rd party strap.
I use these quick release adapters amzn.to/3HKzaYC they are a poor mans Peak Design alternative. For my main strap I would use the HoldFast Money Maker if I am holding 2 cameras and for one I usually use a leather single strap or a cheap BlackRapid type strap like this amzn.to/419gKr9 It does the job and the pocket on it is handy. The leather straps are much more expensive but the quality is good and they look much smarter for paid work. Hope that helps.
@@stevelitton Ahhhhhhhhh very cool. Yes I can use these. I'll just strap them to my small rig cage strap slits. I get it. Thanks. I am so happy about these.
I ordered originally from AliExpress as they had them in stock really early or so I thought. It still wasn't dispatched after 2 weeks and then I saw 2 pop up on Amazon and grabbed one cancelling the other order. But the stock is so inconsistent at the moment.
I kind of see those two tools as having different use cases. The handle is more for run and gun work where you need low angles. The XLR-1 is better suited to controlled environments like interviews where you can mount the mic to a stand off the camera, place it correctly and have more time to monitor and adjust the audio levels. If you did want the cage and the XLR-1, you could use a side handle/s. Hope that helps.

Really, I much prefer this version. I did find it a bit odd that there were no instructions with mine. I had seen people complaining the camera spins in the cage because they didn't realise it had a secondary locking point. I do agree they could do with packing some instructions.
@@stevelitton Hey Steve, I found out something mind blowing. I wonder if you already know about it. In custom mode setting # 4. Do you know you can have up to 10 as opposed to the 3 that is in there?
