- In October 2021 Leo, Hans and I had a chainsaw Saturday. We agreed that we all would make a bowl from a piece of chestnut and put the video online at the same time, so that we could see what the others have done with it. We call it the "Chestnut Collaboration 2022"
My piece of wood had an unpleasant surprise for me. A big nail! 😮
Luckily I had no major damage to my chisel.
The videos of Leo and Hans can be found here:

⚒️My tools🛠️
-Record Power Coronet Herald wood lathe
-Record Power SC4 chuck
-Record Power SC4\SC3 50mm chuck jaws
-Robert Sorby 842F 10mm (3/8") bowl gouge with home made handle
-Chestnut Cut 'n' Polish (polishing paste)
-Chestnut Wood wax 22
-Rustin Danish oil
That nail had been in there a long time. Great looking bowl, based upon the finish one wouldn’t have thought it was from the same tree as Leo’s.
Luckily I only had a nail and no bark ingrowth like Hans en Leo.
Thanks for watching!
Frank.
Great bowl. You never know what you’re going to find when you dig into a blank. You did a great job with it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Doug. Next time I hope to find gold 🤗.
Nailed it Frank! 😁 You did a great job. I really like the natural look.
My wife had asked to make a bowl without finishing. We are also very happy with the end result. Thanks for watching Matt.
Frank
👍 Very beautiful! 👏👏👏
Thanks 🤗
You did nail this project Frank twice. I love its size and its usefulness.
Stay safe - Jojo
Thanks Jojo
Great looking bowl Frank and fun watching you turn it. To bad about those nails. I am sure that was a real surpise.
Take care,
Gary
That was certainly a surprise. I had never experienced it before. Hope it won't happen too often.
Cheers. Frank.
Nice bowl Frank considering those darn nails it's still turned out beautiful stay safe friend👍👍👍👍
Thanks Radar. Fortunately little damage from the nails.
Take care. Frank
Nice work Frank, to say the blank was wet to start with was an understatement. Turned out great in the end, bummer about the nails though. Keep safe, John
Thanks John. That was a lot of moister indeed.
The end result is nice. We like it.
Take care. Frank.
Wow lovely! 😊
Thank you 🤗
Merci beaucoup Denis 🙏
Beautiful bowl! I think Leo owes you another blank for giving you that nail LOL! Just make sure it isn't from the same tree ha ha!
Thanks for sharing, Stuart
Leo has already given me a lot of beautiful wood. I'd like to get a nail for that.
Thanks for watching Stuart!
Frank.
@@TheTinyWorkshop sounds like he's a good friend!
A really nice bowl Frank! Well done! And my blank had a surprise too: a really weak bark inclusion.
There was no other way but to incorporate it into the piece.
What a shame that Hans' link doesn't work yet because I'm really curious! 😎
All three of us had our problems, but we also solved them all. It was a nice collaboration Leo!
@@TheTinyWorkshop Absolutely!
Nice job Looks Awesome Frank! 👍 bet that nail was pretty rough on your bowl gouge 😣 , Enjoyed the video!
Thanks Kimsey 🤝
What a gorgeous bowl Frank. I love it.
Was there any damage to your gouges when they went nail hunting?
Take care mate.
Cheers, Huw
PS Off to watch Leo's and Hans' videos now
No damage Huw.
Thanks for watching our collaboration videos 🤝
Cheers.
Frank.
Nice one Frank. How much shorter was your chisel after grinding it back into shape after hitting a nail or 2 ? Take care. -Mike
I have now found so much metal that I can almost make a new chisel out of it. 😉Thanks for watching Mike.
@@TheTinyWorkshop "Nailed it" didn't see this pun until just now ... I guess you did ! Lol. 👍😎
Hi. Nice bowl. Are happy turning the blank of that size and weight on the Herald?
The Herald has no problem with this. I recently filled the legs with sand and that makes it even better!
@@TheTinyWorkshop good to hear. I want to replace my old lathe from 70's and I would not turn bigger items than what you had in this video. I don't have access to try these before purchase, so I've been hesitant.
I'm very happy with this lathe.
Hi Frank. Where are You my friend? Is everything ok?
Very much appreciated that you ask Rafal🤝.
Physically yes, but mentally less. I've been very busy last year and haven't been able to do much woodturning or watch woodturning on YT. Hopefully I will start again this summer. I need to find the meaning of life again in this harsh world.
Take care my friend and keep on turning 💪
Buy a hand held metal detector. It’ll save you a lot of hassle.
I will. Thank you!
