  • Overcoat, Topcoat, call it what you will. This is the coat you reach for when appearances matter, when you've gotta hit that winter wedding or take that cute barista on a winter date. How should your overcoat fit? What fabrics are best for your climate? These are all of the questions which will guide your purchase of a dapper option for those cold months. Don't forget to check your thrift stores and surplus shops! You can find excellent pea coats or tweeds in terrific condition for pennies on the dollar. Just remember to look for natural fabrics like 100% wool, cashmere, or blend of the two. I even have a 100% silk topcoat which is a great transitional piece! Which overcoat will you get?

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

You all may laugh at me but in 1997 I bought a London Fog long black trench or over coat. Came with a liner also came with 2 belts. The belts are the same. It is now 2019 January and I still have this coat and the original belt still looks almost new. The coat looks brand new. I clean this coat in the spring fold it and put it away for 4 months and then hang it up again in the fall. I have enjoyed this coat and today when I ware it it is nice comment after comment on how nice it is. I just love to ware this coat. One of my Best Buy’s for the number of years I have owned it.

I am from California, and in that brief time that we have winter weather (yes, we get winter weather) I like to have not just my winter coat, but it’s nice to have interchangeable cold-weather layers so I’m not wearing the same coat over everything for the season. I love jackets!!!

Thanks for the shoutout to the ladies at the end there, Carl! Love your videos! This was very helpful as I am in the
Market for a topcoat. I’ve learned so much about clothing/boots from you and have been able to make such well informed purchases! Recently, picked up some pieces from Taylor Stitch and I discovered the brand through you. The boots are great and I’m looking forward to their ojai jacket in wool and some cotton hemp tees too. Keep up the awesome content! Thanks!

Carl I have about 30 pieces of outer wear. I'm obsessed.I have an all wool, grey, black and burgundy, glen plaid, London Fog overcoat. Bought for me back in 1986 by my Pop Pop. I've been getting complements on this coat for 32 years. Made in America. Forget about it. It has a matching belt that just takes the coat to that classic level. They don't make em like that anymore. Black satin lining has been repaired once. Thanks Pop Pop.

Fur lined spread collar bombers, Denim trucker Sherpas and "Marlboro" (Lambskin or suede shell in light brown, button - up, fur collar and lining) would be my choice in winter. Naturally it's not that cold here in Mexico and particularly in my city, if it's really bad, it can go down to like 5 degrees. (And that's really extreme, usually the coldest peaks are around 40-50 fahrenheit) In that 40 degree range, i can wear a random wool coat, a heavier nylon bomber with a heated interior with a scarf and beanie, or simply a properly lined cowhide leather jacket with a flannel underneath. Suede is what i have found to be rather cold in this temperatures. Greetings, Mr. Murawski, take care.

I'm w you man, coats are my favorite big ticket items after watches and shoes and agreed on vintage and thrift, pennies on the dollar man, I just picked up another two , one from a store that was big in NE back in the day, Kennedy's, a 1960 black all cashmere (old cash. Is almost always better than new mod cashmere ), chesterfield w a velvet collar, another is a tweedy "showerpoof" wool Mac style from now sadly gone Dunn and Co , made in Britain, think fuddy duddy older gent British/UK country coat, score on average down 4 to 12 bucks per coat while thrifting and have found great high end pieces for next to nothing , also w vintage you get full traditional lengths which I prefer, ie to past knee to about mid shin , that's the point of some of these coats, protect from elements and longer tends to execute on that more effectively
I was on a bit of a traditional trench kick this fall , my friends keep calling me inspector gadget haha
Btw your drone footage is stellar

    • @CarlMurawski

Haha thanks man! Thrifting is fun because you never know what might be lurking in the racks, and there may be some real gems! I’m a big fan of thrifting regularly, especially in affluent areas where they don’t think twice about clearing out their closet!

Thanks man, it helps to adopt the mindset of buying less but better. So think of a good coat like an investment that will serve you for years longer than an inferior one. For example I’m sure you spend good money on work boots, and you’ve learned that cheap ones just aren’t worth the hassle. It’s the same kind of thing.

    • @bradbuchanan9326

I have two excellent Carhartt coats that made it through years of construction work with ease, but they're not what I'd wear to dinner with the wife (unless that dinner was on top of scaffolding!).
