I’m 65 yr. old woman & was trying to save money by doing my own yard work. Small yard but there are steep banks, so I’ve been using crampons (like hikers use) while weed whacking. The other day I overestimated myself & took a tumble. Fractured 5th metatarsal. It’s hard getting older & having to admit I can’t do what I used to do.

Jones fracture of the 5th metatarsal, right foot so no driving and no weight bearing. I had just left the office after my last day on the job, walking 10 feet to my car on a perfectly flat, smooth, clean office park sidewalk. My foot rolled for no particular reason that I can recall and I heard a loud pop. Seven weeks in, using an all-terrain knee scooter that I rented for $70/month at a local medical supply place (about 1/2 the cost of buying the same model and I didn't have to put it together). I use a walker in the shower to stay steady. Boot when out and about. I live alone off-grid, so this has been a challenging and isolating 2 months, but hoping I can drive again soon. I did get a bone stimulator through insurance (I just started a new job with new health insurance, so it costs me my entire $2000 annual deductible). My doctor thinks they really help, I am not sure... could be a very expensive placebo. Wishing all who are in the same boat speedy and smooth healing! You got this!

Thank you so much for this wealth of information! I recently broke my foot (left, 5th metatarsal) by stepping on a pine cone at work *insert face palm* I was shocked because I'm 28 and have never had an injury. My ankle and foot rolled all the way to the side, and I heard a crack that sounded like a empty water bottle being squished. I have learned more with you here than I did at the hospital during my intake and follow up appointments.

@@youngmoola31 prayers up for you! It took me the full 8 weeks to not need crutches or the scooter. Then shortly after that, I was able to wear a shoe again but with a brace. This happened in March 29, 2021. But June, I felt my foot and ankle was strong enough to walk in just my shoe. I did 6 weeks of physical therapy and that really helped. My healing was slow, thought. If you can, please stay home as long as possible take calcium and Vitamin D, and eat healthy. Do you stretches and workouts when you sitting down watching TV or on your laptop.

@PopYogurt I’m recovering! Although my progress was slow, I’m walking good, now and I don’t wear a brace h less I go to the gym, just to be safe. The strength in my foot is not 100% but it’s so much better. Physical therapy helped and also just staying off it and allowing myself time to heal, making sure I took calcium and Vitamin D.

Guy cut me off on the way to work, made me drop my sporty and hit my metatarsal on my break peg hard enough to cause a small microfracture upon rolling and landing back on my feet just to collapse immediately to the pain on my foot. Been healing for over a month and took all the steps prior to even watching this video due to my experiences in life and in the military. No joke that this small injury does take a long time. If anybody is going through a foot injury, please take it slow. I'd rather sacrifice half a year of embarrassment and small inconveniences than to never walk normally again.

Nice video thanks. I dropped a piano on my right foot and suffered a clean break in the third metatarsal. After the sixth week the orthopaedic surgeon said I didn't need any further x-rays/consultations as the callus was forming - although there was still no ossification between the two broken halves of the shaft. Now it's ten weeks since the accident. I am gradually increasing my exercise level with walks round the park but still cannot put all my weight on the ball of my right foot. I suppose jogging is still going to be months off. Oh yes, I started driving after three weeks using my left foot. Now I'm back to the right foot though I sometimes switch back if the right foot begins to ache too much.

I slipped at home 3 weeks ago and didnt realize it until later in the evening because I have neuropathy and have injured my foot and leg multiple times. This was the last thing I needed however with our Medicare system being terribly exhausted! I walked out of the hospital on my injured foot for a few days before getting fitted with a proper boot! And after seeing the doctor the only thing he said was to continue wearing the boot for another 3 weeks followed by a few sessions of physio! No follow up, no need for further examination! I broke my foot walking on my lawn, walking the same path I did 100 times before.
Didn't check my footing as I was in a hurry and just walked in a smallish hole and the foot flipped.
At first, I thought I just sprained it. But I couldn't walk on my foot and something was loose, and it was colorful and huge.

I got most of questions answered, thank you so much. It is really very helpful and informative.
I am 51. And I am still in a process of healing but have lot of queries. I had a road accident on March 3, 2022. I was hit by a taxi and it's tyre just happened to roll over the part of my right foot.
During the time of collision, the pain was too intense and burning and I couldn't stand my right foot. I didn't realize that my foot had fractured until I was rushed to emergency room in a nearby hospital by the traffic police, of course in the same car that hit me! An x-ray revealed that I had 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsals broken! I was put an L-shaped cast for 5 weeks. I used crochet for walking. I got my cast removed on April 4. Now I am walking, however, I feel it's not like a normal walk, I feel my right foot being locked.
I haven't started any physiotherapy but doing some exercises myself following RUclips videos.
Now the stretching exercises you have shared within us are going to be really helpful.
Is it fine if I do exercises myself at home or is it advisable to do physiotherapy?
    Anticipating your positive response.

I dropped something really heavy on my right foot at work 10 weeks ago and broke the 5th metatarsal into several pieces and it was an open fracture with the impact creating a hole half way through my foot. Had ORIF surgery and I’m walking and driving already so I’m very fortunate and happy about it. The first couple of weeks were horrible, a lot of pain at night and I constantly had to keep my foot up because every time blood started pooling into it, it would start hurting like hell.

My back is starting to really hurt from the unevenness of wearing the boot -- even though I wore an EvenUp shoe lift on the good foot. How long do you have to wear the boot? The heaviness of it puts too much pressure on the very swollen, painful area on the top of my forefoot where the fractures are. Why didn't your dr want to follow up with you? Did they give you any instructions about how long to wear the boot and when to wean out of it? You really need follow up evaluations regularly!

Yep, after watching this GREAT video, I think I broke the top of my foot and will cave in and go to the foot Docs. I was (still am) restoring a 160 yr old cast iron Sewing machine. I put it on a kitchen island to fix it. It is about at my waist level. I put the small screws in a 4lb. heavy glass old ashtray that fell off the edge, turned sideways and landed on the top middle of my foot at full force. I swelled, and it is all kinds of blue, slightly off greenish, and now fresh bruising is starting on top. Did it on Sep 30. Feel like a clutz but it is really hurting so off I go to see the docs. Thanks for your video Doc!!!!

Very informative video!! I also like ur sense of humor! How I hurt my foot was going snow tubing in Utah, on vacation. When I got back I worked for a week in pain and then went to the Daytona500 bc I got free tickets and Amazing seats. I went to work and had to close...I could barely walk and was in tears and finally went to the ER. Sadly not been able to work for almost a month. I work on my feet!!😣 My 3rd metatarsal is slightly fractured..not taking care of it right away put more pain and stress on it.

I injured my foot about 2 years ago. I guessed it was a high ankle sprain, but didn't want to go to the doctor because it was the start of the pandemic at the time. I figured it would heal on its own, but after a few months, it was still pretty sore. Every now and then I feel a little pain in my ankle when putting pressure on it. I can tell my left ankle is physically weaker than my right. Is it too late to see a doctor or would I just be waiting both our time? pretty much every tip you mentioned in this video I did the opposite. I wish I would have seen this then, but I've had many sprained ankles in the past and healed with no problem. Any exercises, stretches, or tips you can give me? will the tips you mentioned in this video still apply?

Riding my cruiser, sometimes the pegs drag on a turn, lifted my foot up to avoid catching my foot but the ground was sloped up. It slammed my lifted foot back into the motorbike and twisted it. Knew immediately something was wrong, tingling all the way down to the toes, rode back (couldn't change gear), finally get into the hospital so after a CT, the top is all broken. Great fun!

I fractured my foot skateboarding last Friday. I rolled my foot sideways and initially thought I had just rolled my ankle which I've done countless times in 14 years of skating. apparently I fractured my cuboid bone (the one right above the fifth metatarsal) the next morning my ankle and foot showed no outward symptoms of injury but I literally couldnt put one pound of weight on it. got an x ray and its a pretty clean fracture right through it, almost snapped in half but not quite. biggest takeaway is "listen to your body" highlighted both by the way I injured myself (had worked 8 hours, skated for almost three, should have gone home and lived to fight another day) and the morning after though I saw no outward symptoms, the pain was inordinate for what I thought had happened.

Instead it went sideways even though I wasn't overstretching. I came down feet first shattering half the bones in my right foot. Luckily I was wearing Doc Martens and I sustained no other injuries. Broke my 2nd, 3rd & 4th metatarsals on the right foot last night. How? Walking my dog, who frantically ran after a dog she saw, making my ankle twist (knee in, foot out), then falling on that foot as it was twisted, crushing the outer side of the foot. It felt like my foot was a sausage bun, folded in half, for a second, and I instantly knew it was broken, without a doubt. Feet don't usually bend that way 😂😅
Symptoms: Sharp pain, numbness in the three last toes, aching/dull pain, muscle cramping in the foot, swelling (like almost instant), could not walk on it, it was impossible, weird discoloration, difficulty moving the toes and ankle, shaking, nausea (probs from the stress of the event).

I broke 5th metatarsal Jones fracture a few years ago. Took 1 year before I could walk on it again. 6 months in my primary doctor says I am good walk on it. Nope didn't even last a few hours. Went to foot specialist and was in surgery 2 days later getting a screw put in. Then 6 months before he let me walk on it as it wouldn't heal.
Then 2 months 2 weeks ago I slipped a little on fresh cut grass. Slid outward about 3". My knee actually hurt the most. 1st night pain in foot. 2nd night more pain. 3rd night lots of pain. 4th day went to foot doctor. Took X-rays and says no fracture but 2 torn tendons on ultrasound. Says elevate and ice. I made it 5 days and it was doing nothing but getting worse. I knew I had broken it from the start. Felt just like the previous broken foot. New x-rays and sure enough the fracture is now showing up. Doc says it can take up to two weeks sometimes for fractures to show on x ray. Ok it's fractured but only showing about 3/4 of the way across the rear of the 4th metetarsal. So he says no ice! Epson salt warm bath soak foot 2 times a day. Boot on and crutches. Come back in 4 weeks. So I follow this exactly with compression healing sleeve and soaks and red light treatment. Took it very easy. Went back it's now been right at 6 weeks since the break. New x-rays and NO good! The fracture is now fully across the 4th and opened up about 1mm.
He says you have to stay off it. I said I have 100% boot and crutches and no injury to it again. I had nothing go wrong during that 4 weeks.
So he says 4 more weeks and same process. So I did my best stayed off until about the 3rd week I could put some light pressure without any pain really. I would call it a 4 to 5 pain level not 7 to 8 normal. So I did go for a light walk (with my boot on) several times over week 4 so this is week 9 overall. Then appointment comes and new x-rays.
And my foot looks like a bomb went off inside of it or a hammer smashed the crap out of it!
The 4th original fracture is open 3mm and now has a full fracture more to the rear that's 1mm and the piece between the original break and the new rear one has split into 2 pieces as well. Then at the front of the 4th just behind the joint there is now a fracture that's about 70% through. Then at the rear of the 3rd metatarsal next to the fractured mess of the 4th the 3rd now has broken the entire corner off the bone! So the 4th now has 4 fractures 3 of which are fully broken with 2 pieces floating between and a few smaller pieces on the outside next to the 5th. And the 3rd is broken the corner off lengthwise a good piece.
And amazing enough I can actually walk steps on this foot! I have full pain but really bad shooting pains. I get purple bruising that shows up in various places during this entire thing. Right above the front 4th fracture behind toe I got a huge purple blister like that showed up. I assume that was when I fractured right under that. Now I have purple or light brown yellow bruising on my heal and tops of my toes and a spot on my big toe. Then blood under the big toe nail currently.
He says OMG how did you hurt yourself like this? Did you get in a car wreck or fall or something without the boot?
Nope I never had anything happen that would cause more injury. I did have a few times when I took a step in the bathroom without crutches and the bones make cracking sounds I could hear and feel them moving. But I thought it was just foot popping from not stepping on it for awhile. Of course it hurt but not like actually breaking anything pain. So I did not worry. But now my foot is in bad shape and has fractured everywhere.
He says at 3mm displacement I should have reconstructive surgery to put it back right. Screws and plate. But he says it's a fairly invasive surgery that we need to avoid if possible. So he says let's cast it and try to go 30 more days when my insurance will cover the bone stimulator machine. Then I can try that to see if I can avoid surgery. But I am claustrophobic so I will do the boot and go the 30 days more. It's now the 6th and my appointment is the 29th. But if I touch my foot to step the bones shift and crack loud still now! They are clearly not healing just like my 5th never did. But I am not sure I should wait till the 29th to try bone stimulator or if it's worse (more displacement) on the 29th he will just do surgery.
My concern is do the bone stimulators work? Am I waiting longer only to damage this more apparently just looking at it or do I just call and get in now and get the surgery done? If I wait till 29th and it's displaced more I go for surgery. If its the same I can try bone stimulator and how many months do I try that to see if it works? It's busted up pretty bad now. He thinks it's worth a try to use bone stimulation. But I want to be back on my feet ASAP. I am thinking this summer is shot completely at this point. I have several camping trips and a family vacation to the beach and theme park in Sept. I fear at this rate I will be using the walker or scooter again! I was stuck on the scooter last time for our trip with the 5th metatarsal broken. So I didn't want to do that again.
    This is an absolute nightmare.
I have degenerative bone and joint disease. Mostly affects my joints. Lots of knee surgeries and constant pain in joints. But I am still pretty active and walk a lot. Not far just a few times a day to keep things moving. I stretch a lot to keep mobility good. I have arthritis and nerve issues due to constant pain. But broken foot on top is to much.
I am looking for rapid healing and fixing the problem ASAP.
Not sure the bone stimulator is going to help.

How I broke my foot: pure stubbornness. I had two heavy boxes in my hands (45 pounds) and I tried to open a door by myself. I used my right foot to catch the door to kick it open. Gravity caught me and taught me a lesson.
X-ray didn't originally show a break but I was swollen to hell, brused and couldn't move my toes or feel them. A "stress" x-ray showed my tib-fib trying to socal distance and the micro fracture.
I am glad my ortho doctor listened to me.

I have two kids and dozens of animals, I have to be a pretty active person with our lifestyle. I can’t shower because my surgical incision still isn’t all the way closed. I was told to start trying to bear weight as soon as the incision healed I thought it was closed enough to do so a few days ago (after 4 week mark) I started testing it with crutches. It felt so good and there was little to no pain but at the end of the day the scab had bled so I went back to the scooter. It’s definitely healing slower than I’d like or was told… trying so hard to be patient and rely on others to pick my kids up from school, etc. Very difficult to drive when your right foot is in a boot….

I was on the 3rd or 4th rung of a ladder pruning my avocado tree. The ladder was well grounded and things looked pretty safe. I was about to start the cutting with my awesome chargeable reciprocal saw, but i decided to set the saw up on the wall and pull some smaller branches out of the way. I'm 80 so I'm more careful about ladders and saws. I took a hold of another annoying branch and pried it to the side and then it snapped and I was thrown back from the rebound. I landed on my left heel in a bed of cobbles (3-6 inch rocks). I think maybe tying myself loosely to the tree trunk would have been helpful. Also I think doing work with ladders and saws should be done when one is not tired. I spent about an hour working out and then I had been moving rocks and pruning for a couple hours before I started what was the most dangerous work. So I got an x-ray and it showed a "minimally displaced break of the lateral malleolus." I had a soft cast for 11 days and now I have a high boot. All the info in this video is fantastic. My doctor gave me about 5% of this. I'm using my mom's fancy walker to get around. It is terrific. It has brakes and an under the seat basket and i put the knee of my bad leg on the padded seat and push around with the right foot. I eat a perfect diet and have been doing some weight lifting and sit ups. I have one of those massage sticks and will try it out tomorrow when I go out in the sun. One thing I would suggest is to keep a large mason jar with a lid by your bed so you can pee in that at night and don't fall trying to get around in the dark. I actually had that happen. There are so many little things to help out like putting all your cleaning and toiletry articles out in one place.

In 2010 I forgot I was in top bunk and “stepped” out of bed fracturing my left 4th metatarsal. Then in 2016 I totaled a car and was told I fractured the left 5th metatarsal and that my 4th metatarsal was a non-union from 2010. I was in cast no weight bearing for 3 months with delayed healing after 6 months and use of bone stimulation finally healed. Starting this past week had recurrent similar pain in left foot and am going to get new image soon after playing tug of war with horse that wouldn’t load for 2 hours on the trailer.

Böhler angle is perfect and there is no need for surgery now. That is what I heard today from my orthopaedist. But he told me that broken ankle needs 16 weeks to fully recover. In his opition 16 weeks is the time when the heel bone set. What is the truth? When I could walk pretty normal again? What's the timeline? Thank you so much!

I fell getting out of the bathtub in Oct. And broke my #3 metatarsal bone at top of my foot. I didn't have much bruising or swelling at first.
I wore a boot but wasn't really good at staying put since it was hunting season and I had the time off so I figured I would have my husband drive me to a ground blind and just hang out there for hours with my foot up on a stool. It was great for the most part. Then I shot a deer and my husband wasn't coming back soon enough to stop me from going after it. Needless to say, I didn't do myself any favors. I went back to work driving a school bus on Dec. 19th. Worked four days then had Xmas vacation. My foot is still very sore. My toes still hurt when I walk. I try to not lift up on my toes but keep foot flat. I am glad I found this video. Now I know what I should and shouldn't have done and that it will take much longer to be 90%. I will be scheduling an appointment with a foot doctor since my Orthopedic PA was not much help.Good news is
..I now have gone from a tub to just a shower

Very nice info. 5 days ago something fell on my foot it immediately swollen like a ballon. I iced it 3 hours long and it went down quite well.. it did not get red or blue, i went home an went to bed early and rubbed tiger balm on it an wore 2 socks over it. Wen im in bedi dont feel anything. I feel stiffness when my foot is down. Now after 4 days i can walk wearing a slipper. But where the foot was hit is still stiff. I can walk and work. I move my foot etc. So it doesnt stay stiff or painful. What is ur opinion on my situation? Oh yeah a car wheel with tire fefl off the table and on my foot. . I can walk on it but the foot hust feel tight because its still swolen and stiff whete the wheel hit. No blue black or red on the foot. Only a small mark where it hurts sometimes.

I had "1st metatarsal fusion" surgery in July 2023. A couple years prior, I dropped a heavy log on my foot. A lump on top of my foot got freakishly large. It became difficult to fit it into a shoe. X-ray showed it was broken and the surgeon recommended surgery :):):) The lump is gone. Most of the time, it feels better than it did. Sometimes it hurts, the ankle pain was not there prior to surgery. Sometimes I think it was a mistake to get the surgery but the size of the "bony spur" left me no choice. I did PT, I am hopeful that it will continue to heal, I read that it can take a year to recover fully. I am interested in your 'take' on this, would it have eventually healed if I had just left it alone longer?? Thank you in advance.

You are the best wish had since this before. The booth amd the cast were to heavy and painful for my bad hip, same with crutches and my lack of balance and weak and hurting right arm, the hard flat shoe to early too painful, wheelchair out of the second as my house is not big enough so...I had to use a half cast with a heal with bandages all around it and a desk chair with arms and wheels to go to the bathroom room and kitchen with someone pushing there, also used kinestetic tape and the soft lining with air ferula thats inside most sof cast booths. Both and now sometimes at night just the kinestetic tape or tight elastic bandage that keep my foot in 90 degrees and compressed. I broke 5th Metatarsol and a few strained/torn ankle ligaments it seems. Was in bad shape before with my foot.
Have seen different doctors with opposite approaches.

One doctor said to move toes for making better blood circulation, onother says be carefool not move too much, you can slow healing ... Now I am afraid and confused what to do. I broke (straight cleaned across) my 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th (a little hairline crack on the 5th) metarshal. I'm on my 4th week. And yeah also from motorcycle accident. So far the swelling has gone down and I am able to move around more. I toss the boots the doctor gave me and order a lightweight ones on Amazon...pretty nice. But I only put those on when I'm using my knee scooter. I am able to put my foot down with about 30 percent of pressure and it feels a little weird because of atrophied...but as long there's no pain in doing so and no aches at night it means your recovery is going well! Notes: move your toes around so you can get your muscle to stretch. I rotate my ankle as well..good luck and hope u recover soon!

Great video.. Haven't been to the doc yet, pretty sure I just sprained my mid toes knuckles since it's mainly the joints that hurt, and in the morning I feel a sharp pain back to the heel if I don't step very carefully, maybe I tore something... No bruising very minimal swelling at the joints. I was walking wearing a pair of low quality slippers in the yard when side step ripped the outer edge loose and sort of rolled the edge of my foot over, should have put on real shoes... Anyway, thought I'd share.. Thank you for the info..🤕

Figured I'd comment here... My son dropped something on left big toe and I have a proximal phalanx stress fracture I've had it for 5mos before finding this out. It doesn't involve the joint. Initially I was told it wasn't broken but yeah.
Question... My Dr said it's 75% healed and to get a shoe with a from last and no memory foam. I read your recommendations but they seem like what I tried on. I honestly don't know what I'm looking for. I tried a bunch and they all seem the same. My main pain is when bending my toes to push off of, it can't bear the weight and Im pretty sure how this just keeps injuring and not healing 100%.
