  • Deep inside Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming is something most people would not expect. Abandoned dude & cattle ranches along with 100+ year old homesteads and vacation properties. These places existed before the park was created and operated for decades as private inholdings. Eventually, all of them were sold to the park and left like a time capsule. Pristine rustic log cabins, barns and corrals are clustered over a dozen separate locations within and straddling the park boundaries. They are not promoted as places to visit by the park and most appear to be rarely, if ever visited. Some cabins still have furniture, dishes and relics from the 1920's - 1950's.
Tag along as I explore these locations within the park in my series "Abandoned in Grand Teton".
The location in this video started a little later than most of the ones I am visiting, around 1954. It was a vacation property nearby to a working dude ranch.
My videos are not short and I tend to talk a lot and sometimes slowly, with a lot of Umm's.. as I gather my thoughts. Sorry! :0) . I am a historian and genuinely fascinated when I visit these places, so I share a stream of observations and questions that come up in my mind as I experience them. I'm not always right in my observations and I'm eager to learn from you in the comments if I'm incorrect. I don't cut out a lot of video from these trips as I want you to experience the places just as if you were tagging along beside me.
Please understand that I will not disclose the locations or names of these places unless they are a designated historical spot on park maps.
Why should we protect and preserve historical places?
The heritage of a place is what sets it apart from all other places. Preserving places remembers the past while preparing for the future. Preserving places saves the culture of the persons who came before. Culture is a matter of pride. Unique historical and cultural sites give places a sense of identity. Please visit historic and prehistoric places with respect.
I hope you enjoy my videos.
