Wow. What a great, great video. Above everything, you're saying something different than everyone else, and you impart so much credibility by your past experience and down to earth attitude! Thank you so much! I wish there were a part 2 --- in fact I could watch a whole series of this!
Brilliant. I get quite alot of clients complimenting my analogue sound because I have some expensive bus compressors... but I only work ITB for mixing clients. XD
The EQ tips were invaluable brother. I've been using different eqs on different channels (because of options & ignorance ya know) not realizing that's part of the reason why some things aren't blending as they should. This definitely was helpful. Thanks again
I wish.... oh I wish I would have seen this video before I have spend thousands of pounds on all the stuff I shouldn't have spent.... Totally agree and a lot of things start making a lot more sense after watching a few of your videos - Thank you guys!!!
Great video. Just as a note I found the Slate Tape Machine seems to boost the volume of the signal by about 1.6 dB which definitely makes A/B tests more difficult to do accurately.
This is brilliant. I also put a tape emulation on each track between the two EQs, to have even more of a full analog "chain". With the plugin window link in Logic you can even keep all the plugins open and always have the plugins for the selected channel ready. Super fast workflow.
I use a 8-bus mixer as front and back-end to my interface; a whole slew of the same pres, eq... each buss into a interface i.p., pretty much 2 VCA comps and other fx unit inserted as well, staying for parallels on mixdown (my setup rn is practically an early 90s project studio except for no tape/adats... many stuff turns out to be from the era). I often calibrate my mics and "tape returns" like you quoted on 25:30. From the board I record the mix to a 2nd interface as a "master recorder" (mostly out of necessity), going through the 1st gen dbx 166... wonder if you used that one xD One other nice thing to get the ever-elusive analog sound is commitment. GIRATS as quoted on the video and to sum mics on the way in. I've learned a lot this way. In the pre-pandemic times, I often recorded live bands, at first 10-16 mics direct to stereo, later 4 to 6 inputs. EQ reverbs and everything but the kitchen sink. Got amazing results using one channel of a lowly 3630 inserted on bass and the other as a drum parallel. Anyways, the kicker for me, more than the sound is the speed and readiness. Cheers from Brazil! Many thanks for such precious tips and enjoyable time.
We have the all access bundle or whatever it’s called. $15/mo For me (James), it’s the only set of plugins I ever use. I can do a mix entirely using VMR and Verbsuite. Two plugins
I use harrison Mixbus for this reason. You end up using the channel EQ and comps for 90% of the sound, then I use a few main plugins on the busses out to main mix.
I'm doing the same right now. So fast and I really like the EQ's. Not super excited about the channel compressors but the tape emulation is great. For a tape-effect sound the SketchCassette plugin is awesome.
@@JayBeBerg I mainly use the comps per channel for sound on the kit and bass. MY Main comp overall all is the DSP FC70 which just adds gold to my ears. Cheers
haha thats some hard conditioning-bias going on about the cohesiveness in the mix from the tracking chain. a lot of that comes from the room-sound though.
I have to say I really like your channel, really good advice and I've just subscribed. Though it does bother me a little bit that you use the masculine form a lot when talking about hypothetical fellow musicians/engineers.
Thank you Sénastien, it’s just the way I talk! And I also swear too much 🤣 But it is something I’m aware of, and the term ‘guys’ particularly bothers me (but not James so much, different generation I guess) so I always try to make a point of saying guys & girls… but that leaves a lot of other gender identifications out, doesn’t it? I like the InCamera RUclips channel… he always starts a video with “Hello humans!”. Maybe we could start doing that… but that might upset the cat!
@@PresentDayProduction Anton Petrov says "hello wonderful person", I just love it. And about the swearing, that's where I don't mind at all. Being straight to the point and honest is still a great quality to have ;) Keep doing great videos and giving helpful advice!

This should be compulsory viewing whenever someone searches mixing on YT. Brilliant.
I find it hilarious James is just sitting in the background with the tape mess around him:D
I remember that it genuinely did take the entire length of the video to get it off me, and then some!
Got to love the subtleties. Cheers James!
@Malachi Otis Wow! you both have very convincing names!
Yes there is a low key sub/dom vibe with this video.
I believe for security reasons there are no scissors in the studio.
Man, I think you have the best mixing videos on the whole internet, so clear. Ty.
James is still struggling back there I guess hahah. Excellent video mate

How would you link the plugins in Logic? Curious to learn how to do this.
Lovely videos guys, loads of useful information, please keep up!

Wow, that was very super informative! Speaking of analogue sound, any chance you could cover anologue summing sometime? Cheers!
Fantastic approach, thanks gents!
Thanks Pete!
Very helpful lecture - thanks very much !
The best channel. Cheers
Great video again guys 😊🎶
Thanks Joel!
Would love to see a tape vs digital or tape vs plugins with your production style.

@@PresentDayProduction Thanks Fella's, have you tried the Slate plugins in Logic on the M1 Mac yet, do they work if logic is opened in Rosetta mode?
Slate plugins work perfectly in Logic, just not in anything else like studio one
I'd like to give a shout-out to Console 1 MKII - uber nice strip and with 100% integration into most daws. I wouldn't mix without it.
James looks, well, saturated. Congrats on them Monty Python-esque comedy. ☺️
excellent!

That analog warmth. Seems that people weren’t breastfed and hugged enough as a kid so they need analog warmth now.
Pretty much!

Where is the LP this is perfect
question... if emulating real world, wouldn't tape be 1st in chain coming off into the console emulation? lil confused here
It would be the first plugin across the audio tracks but it would be last on the 2 bus so you get the printing to tape effect

Is the "Output" channel the MIx Bus?
Yes
I wonder if this technique applies as well for electronic music
how do i get that prism sound though 🤷♂️
