The American Civil war decimated the population of Canadian horses in Québec that were sold and exported to the American states. Also, a large portion of them were sent to work the sugar crops on Caribbean islands owned by the British. Important too is that they were the foundation breed for other horses like the Morgan and American Saddlebred.
