    Features: The unique "Canadian" horse breed. Visit Bill Humeny from just outside Saskatoon, SK. where he has a herd of 10 Canadian horses. This unique breed goes back to the 1600's before Canada was even a country. They were sent to Quebec or New France by Louis XIV for new settlers in the area. About 75% of Canadian horses are black, standing 14 to 16 hands high and weighing between 900 and 1500 pounds. At one time there were as many as 160,000 in Canada with their numbers dropping to as low as 200 in recent years.

    My horse is 1/2 cheval canadien and 1/2 standardbred.
    He’s 23 now, was a PMU, and has got foot like rocks (never needed shoes) and is still sounds as the first day I backed him.
    He’s big, 16.3 like his mom, but all dark brown and still a dream come true.

    I help take care of an IR Canadian horse. When I first layed eyes on her I said to myself, "I'd love to get my hands on that horse!". A couple of months later here I am taking care of her. She is 24 years old and delightful. Rolls in the mud too much though!

    Farm I used to visit had 2 of these a black stallion, and a chestnut mare. They were very adorable and playful. They kind of remind me of the Spanish Andulusian with the thicker necks, they aren't extremely tall either which is the perfect size for me.

    My 8th Great Grandfather (Francois Belanger) was a big part of settling Quebec , "The New France" in the 1600's, He came over from the Normandy area of France, with Captain Gifford in 1635 I believe it was. He owned some of the first Canadian horses. Great history..!

      Any “Canadian” can tolerate temperatures that low, from these horses to the people that live here! :)

    • @olocippicolo
      @olocippicolo 2 года назад

      -25 is okay, as long as it isn't a snowstorm or raining. With proper exposure, the horse will grow a thick winter coat, but they still have their limits.
