I have a 14 SE with the powershift. Having driven manuals all my life, I have had no issues with the way the powershift sometimes shifts harshly. I find the problem with the dual clutch is the way it was marketed to American customers. Salesmen where selling the powershift as an "automatic" when it is not, it is an automated manual. It is an inherent part of the design of a dry dct for there to be some jerkyness when moving off from a stop or driving at very low speeds, same sort of thing that is usual with traditional manuals. Customers where told they where getting an automatic, which for Americans means the tried and true hydromatic design, these customers experienced harsh shifts and lost faith in the reliability of the car. Ford could have done a better job informing customers as to the expectations of a dry dct. I also find it unfair to compare the powershift to the VW DSG6, the DSG is a wet clutch design, which removes a lot of the moving off harshness experienced in dry clutch designs, but also requires specialized equipment to service at every 40k miles. Dry dct does not require maintenance until 100k miles.
MrAtaristic exactly, the main reason why people have issues with the clutches wearing out is because they “creep” in traffic which is a lot of heat and stress on dry clutches.
osamabindrinkin40s yes it is kind of cramped in the back. Fortunately I rarely have anyone in the back. It’s great as a work/school commuter car. Love the 29.1 mpg mileage I get in the city. Clocking 4,500 miles since new
I’m not a Ford guy, but back in 2017 my neighbor bought a brand new 2017 Ford focus hatch SEL trim. It’s a beautiful, dark blue metallic chip paint and everything else is just like the one in the video. I absolutely love the look of the car. The styling is done very well and the interior feels pretty decent although I’m not a huge fan of the cloth material. Other than that it’s pretty cute car and rather comfortable! I’ve looked at several other vehicles from ford and other manufactures and this is my favorite of recent ish cars. Honestly, the only newish car that I actually like. Well not the only but more of the average vehicle rather than a luxury or sports vehicle
great review! I bought a 2017 focus SEL hatchback in Kona Blue, about three months ago and I truly love it! the DCT is a bit quirky, but as I drive it I have become used to the way it functions so it's not an issue. For the money it's best blend of equipment/tech and safety in it's class, in my opinion. For myself as a single father of two, it works great for us as a daily driver and is comfy enough for long trips as well.
agree on all points. mine is 2013 se sedan. The trans works well if you "learn" the way it works. Great fuel economy and yes the equip/safety ratings make it a bargain. Considering a 2017 SEL before the changes in 2018, and the deals are awesome.
I have a 2016 Focus and I love it (besides the DCT characteristics) great fuel milage on the hwy and its sooooo easy to park in the city, it will be a sad day when I have to get rid of it as a recall was recently issues on the 2016 focus TCM. Oh ford motor company you have the best looking hatchback, why can you build a transmission to match it????
I had a 2000 Focus ZTS , first year model, but bought it on dealer lot in 2001. At that time it was a $15,000 car, very expensive, but had leather seats, special engine, and side air bags in the seats! Wonderful car, kept it for over ten years, had 160,000 miles on it, and gave it away to a friend, when I purchased a 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis from Enterprise Car Sales.Boy what a difference, but loved my Focus a lot! Thanks Autovlog for the review.
This is the car I build at my factory. It's good to see you review it. You made an honest review, that isn't a love fest, or a hate video. Just an honest opinion.
I think the Focus is just gorgeous. DCT problems kept me from buying it. Instead, went for a Kia Rio, which has given me zero issues in 5 years of ownership. I’m still open to own a Focus , when a new generation comes up. I would choose the manual transmission though. Very good , honest review.
Had a 2012 SEL 6pd dc semi-auto, I got used to it & never had any trouble with the trans or car what so ever. I will consider another lease of the 2017 Titanium model with the great deals they'll be offering. One correction though, the Focus is not an IISH top safety pick or pick plus in its class due to low performance in the small over-lap front crash test. (acceptable rating)
I got the Elantra Value Edition. Also loaded with features and looks, but has a better engine track record along with Hyundai Assurance. My neighbor got a Focus though and I think it is an SE. That is the nice thing about the compact segment that we the consumers get is the tight competition today were all the brands are putting in a huge amount of things that last generation or a couple years ago would only have been found on upper midsize cars. I always say I feel lucky to be living in what I consider a compact golden age where all the things that I've been dreaming of in my first car have actually become reality and in multiple brand selections too.
I still own the 2012 Focus. I had the TCM go bad but Ford replaced it under warranty. The transmission does act weird at times especially in traffic but overall its such a great car. I'm currently at 60k
Hi Mike, I am a FoMoCo Dealer-Quality Rep. at the Michigan Assembly Plant where we build the Focus/C-Max. I wanted to say thank you very much for your honest analogy of the previous issues that were had with the 2012-15' automatic DPS6 transmissions. You summed up the many experiences and assurance that FoMoCo has corrected said issues and your channel is well informed and articulated and look forward to your future daily vids as well, take care.
Have a question about c max transmission. Did ford stay with the same HF 35 transmission ? They upgraded it for the 2013 to 2014 models . What exactly did they do? Did it solve all the problems? Looking to buy 2017 C Max SE hybrid Seems to be a great car . Thanks
I was in the market for a new focus to replace y 03 Focus.. After watching this review I decided on a new 2017 SE sedan with the 3 cylinder 1.0L engine/auto tranny. Color is ingot silver. Has the appearance package. Averaging 29 mpg with 96% city driving in Los Angeles. Great on gas and got a great dealLove it!! AutoVlog really enjoy watching your videos!
Here in Australia there is Trend, Sport and titanium but here you get things like mag wheels, sync 3, parking senses, back up camera, satnav, hatchback and sedan same price, auto headlights and keyless start many more Standard
Good stuff. My wife has a '12. Besides the transmission issues (which have been repaired under warranty) it's been great. Decent room, fun to drive, no other problems besides general maintenance. Just did a tune up over the weekend, and looking for another 90k miles
I just bought the Focus Sport. Here in Australia the Focus has 3 trim levels Trend Sport and Titanium, with the exception of the ST and RS the Focus has one engine ,the 1.5ltr ecoboost engine and the powershift gearbox has been replaced with a conventional 6 speed torque converter.
my 2003 just finally died at 180k miles after having been a rental than my sister's high school and college car and then I got it back in 2011 and smashed around until last week when the engine finally died
I have a '15 ST and i love it! However, the interior rattles and creaks like no other. Would these type of annoyances be covered under warranty? Love your channel!
I moved from Brazil in 2016 and I got a brand new Focus Titanium, this is my first Ford and I really love my Focus, good gas milage, excellent handling, very comfortable, my only complaint is that the sunroof now is standard and my car doesn't have 😭😡
Ford's having a huge Memorial Day sale. The Focus SEL is going for around 15k which just moved it to the top of my list. I must admit I am a little concerned about all the complaints regarding the DCT but having driven a manual for most of my life I'm hoping it's not too big of a problem. Hopefully, the dealer will just throw me the keys and not try to supervise the Test Drive. I'll keep you posted.
I have a 2012 Focus SEL that I just bought after having a 2015 Nissan Versa Note. I love the Focus so much. It's such a difference. Even if it isn't as fast as the ST, it's still a huge step up from the Versa. I just with my car had heated seats as my butt gets pretty chilly quickly haha
Funny how they brought back the SEL! The 15 and 16 had the "SE Luxury" package which was pretty much the same thing. My 2012 SEL has the side profile chrome under the window which sets it apart, but I guess it's a Titanium only feature now. Too bad they took away that distinctive look.
Got my focus SEL in late January as my first new car and I have got to say I love driving this thing everyday! I know there are better cars and options out there but there is nothing like leasing/owning your first car!
@@jvblackbeard965 no it was a lease and a family member took over it in early 2018 and I got a challenger. The focus had more issues than my challenger. I would get a fusion instead.
got a '15 focus titanium in white. Good car, only have 16K miles so far but they have been with no problems so far! just not used to the rear defroster turning on automatically.
I bought the 2017... love it!😎I've owned a 2000/2004/& 2008. Sadly, with production moving to China, my next car will likely be a Fusion.Pound for pound, the Ford Focus is the best car for its size and price in my opinion🌹
Getting a dct in a car under 17,000 dollars was actually impressive, but dct was built for aggressive drivers on twisty post medieval roads in Europe. I have a 5sp 2013 Fiesta for weekly city commutes and my wife drives a dct automatic 2014 Focus. Both are peppy Mazda style drivers. The Focus is something like a Mazda economy knockoff of a 2005 BMW e46. EXCEPT they both get 40mpg for me and about 35 when my wife drives her car (no manual in her world, she's tried but no). Yes I had a 325ic. The 5sp is perfect, if you drive stick, buy that. The DCT, well it is a mix of things. My wife has gone through 3 clutch packs in under 60k. She got sick a few months back and I drove her car to keep it in good order. The trailer hitching stutter from start went away. It shifted perfectly and confidently, but I normally drive the manual of a similar car. She started driving again last month and the DCT is back to stuttering off the light. So I would say it is a combo of driving style and an engineering flaw: Focus is aimed at the secretary market, and office ladies tend to drive in a courteous and deferential manner off starts. That causes these clutches to slip for too long, and therefore burn and varnish. An aggressive sports driver knows to get out of first as soon as you can. That does not matter in Hydromatics. American Automatics were designed for straight US modern post WWII roads and steady driving no jackrabbit starts and safe cruising on multilane highways or nice paved neighborhood streets. Therefore the Focus DCT goes opposite to the common and desired driving style in the US and Canada. As to an actual mechanical problem, the DCTs often had a weak rear seal that allowed oil into the clutch case. Oil on clutches is like oil on brakes. Very bad. I noticed her car stuttered terribly after a long highway trip on flat roads. So when Ford replaces your clutch pack MAKE SURE they replace the rear seal that comes in the kit. They'll often skip that step. All the early ones were flawed and dripped oil after 30k. Some of the current Euro DCTs are wet clutches and that would solve the oil problem.
Here in Australia the Focus (excluding the st and rs) has 3 trim levels...trend.sport.titanium all of them are powered only by the 1.5ltr ecoboost engine. The powereshift has been replaced with a conventional 6 speed torque converter gearbox. Overall the Focus is certainly one of the better ones in it's class.
I have a 1.6 tdci titanium ford focus 2012 great car for city driving also outstanding on the motorway (highway) nice and quite for a diesel and the mpg I have got is 85.5mpg. overall great car nice sized boot and pulls really well with the car full of luggage. It's a 6 speed manual.
I just bought a 2018 Ford Focus SEL Hatchback. I'm glad you brought up how it drives mine drives really funky I just got it this past Friday and I'm not sure if I should take it back to the dealer and have them look at it just to make sure it's okay. It jumps into gear almost like a person who's just learning how to drive a manual vehicle.
In the hatchback there is the S, SE, SEL, TITANIUM, ST, RS. In the sedan there is the S, SE, SEL or TITANIUM I don't really remember for the sedan but your forgetting that in hatchback guise there are two higher trim levels than the Titanium.
Yeah the transmission is a bit touchy at times. But since putting a programmer on it it. I have seen a substantial Improvement. The semi automatic manual mode if you want to call it that. Does work pretty good however. Which I find myself using more now considering. Gas mileage is pretty accurate about 25 in town over 30 on the highway. Which it's still better than my Silverado. Which gets a mind blowing 11 miles to the gallon lol. So no complaints on that front but really not to much to hate here. I love the design of the 2017 Focus. It's a lot more sporty than other models and I really do not like what the competition is coming out with. Which is far too boxy from my likes. No it's not a Nissan Altima or Honda Accord. But then again you're not spending $30,000 either. For what you get it's a good car for the price minus a few quirks. Which can be fixed given some time and a little know-how.
My brother had his new Ford Focus for just a year and it's already in the shop for a faulty TCM transmission control module. At least thats what the dealer told him. Its on warranty of course but just a year old and things are failing?? wow. Just wow.
You should do a video on the whole transmission issue... what changes they made after 2014 etc. "They're renown.." .. what percentage of ones you sell come back as actually being "bad"? I'm particularly fond of the 2014 because it's the last year before they redesigned the tail lights but I've been scared off. Are the newer ones that much better? And yes I'm going to look into a manual - thanks for addressing that.
Great video. Amazing the amount of differences between the US model and UK model. Did I notice even with the cold weather package they don't even give you a heated front windscreen (windshield). The key is ugly. As well there's no keyless start.
Can you seriously review the Fusion Sport 2017, I am considering buying one but I want to see YOU do a review since you are actually enjoyable to watch
will there be a possibility that ford will finally throw away the junk dct and put a regular 6 speed like the one in the fusion? way to many issues with the dct for me to even think about buying the focus i love the looks both inside and out but the dct is garbage and thats a deal breaker
I had a 2014 SE with the Appearance Package. Nice looking car but I had to trade it in less than two years later because of the non-stop transmission problems. Ford will never earn my business again.
You are so Right on Shawn! I have a 05 focus manual 5 speed. Love the car, but now it's time for me to get an automatic. I like the na engine, but won't take the chance on the dct. So over to the Elantra I go.
Sedan Smith just wait until the 2018 model comes out. There will be a regular 6 or 8 speed automatic and a 1.5 turbo engine is coming to North America too 185 hp.
Same color same year. I got this car with 39 miles and under 300 miles it broke down twice, they replaced the battery twice and now it has acceleration noise . Im closer to winning a case with ford
Unfortunately, for 2017, the option to get a manual transmission with the 4cyl. went away with the higher trim levels (SE and SEL) as in the video. We are stuck with the S model sedan only to get the excellent 4cyl. and 5 speed manual option. Very frustrating this combo other than base model is not offered any more. We have the 2012 problematic 6 speed powershift, will NOT get another and personally don't like the 3cyl ecoboost. Unfortunately ST is out of budget. Will have to look elsewhere for college commute duty.
why dont you like the 3 cyl ecoboost? its a very smooth and quiet engine, the 6 speed manual is also a bonus.... and its easily tunable as it is turbocharged
Not sure if you're still replying to comments on this video but I recently bought a used 2016 Ford Focus SE with 10k miles and it has an appearance package and it's been a great car, but what I'm confused about is that it has almost everything that a titanium would have (leather seats, sunroof, premium sound system, etc) but it doesn't have push start and heated seats and some other stuff... so would you say that the car was a special order or is that a normal thing for a SE with an appearance package to have?
Not a fan of the new look, I find out of the ka, fiesta, focus and mondeo only the fiesta suits the new design language ford has used. However, it looks alot better without a front plate. Is a panic button a standard thing in the US? We don't get them in the UK. I've never heard of a car having one before. What does it do?
that spaceship flex up ahead! ! focus are great quick little vehicle. makes you feel fast if you understand its dynamic. turns super fast if you know how to use it
Well Ford goofed big on this car. They put a sunroof as standard equipment when that money would have been better spent on a leather steering wheel and remote start. Also it would have been a good idea to get the transmission troubles fixed. Also they could have put a better quality shocks/struts on the car. Not everyone wants a Focus with a hole in the roof....!!!!!
Had a 2014 Focus hatchback like the one you demo'ed. Loved the car. It was an SE with lots of packages. But I needed/wanted something bigger. It is what it is. That being said, I highly do not recommend this car. I got 17,000 miles out of the tires. I cannot buy tires that bad, but Ford could. (My car did not need an alignment, nor was it driven hard). The transmission was quirky. It required getting the automatic's clutch replaced at 27k. I am not alone. A friend at work got around 20k out of the first set of tires and he is on his 4th clutch replacement.
Hi from UK I have a Ford B max titanium trim level with the auto gear box had it 3 years only 4.000 on the clock its been in the garage more times then on the road, changing Honda from next month.Very Disapointed.
nicholas regent Dont know if it was just my dealership but I have a lifetime drivetrain warranty on mine. Kinda sucks because I want to upgrade it but the warranty restricts it.

So I would say it is a combo of driving style and an engineering flaw:
Focus is aimed at the secretary market, and office ladies tend to drive in a courteous and deferential manner off starts.
Just bought the sedan in shadow black and I love it. Gonna do a review about it soon
O.M.G beautiful car I love ford cars 🚗😍
:)
Dan St-Amour
J Smith, you can buy my Focus,is an expensive piece of junk.
I have a 1.6 tdci titanium ford focus 2012 great car for city driving also outstanding on the motorway (highway) nice and quite for a diesel and the mpg I have got is 85.5mpg. overall great car nice sized boot and pulls really well with the car full of luggage. It's a 6 speed manual.
my 14 focus has run great...I give it extra gas in low gears and do not baby it, 53k miles so far
I love my focus st, the focus style is really nice
I just bought a 2018 Ford Focus SEL Hatchback. I'm glad you brought up how it drives mine drives really funky I just got it this past Friday and I'm not sure if I should take it back to the dealer and have them look at it just to make sure it's okay. It jumps into gear almost like a person who's just learning how to drive a manual vehicle.
Yeah let em take a look at it.
Focus, Feista and GMs Astra (opel) and Corsa plus the Golf make up the majority of the top selling cars in the UK.
Please make a review of the Ford Fiesta ST before it leaves the marker u.u
I have a Ford Fiesta ST review, but will make a 17 as well soon
AutoVlog i will look for it :p
My brother had his new Ford Focus for just a year and it's already in the shop for a faulty TCM transmission control module. At least thats what the dealer told him. Its on warranty of course but just a year old and things are failing?? wow. Just wow.
Sup AutoVlog keep it up with these good videos man! 😎👊👍
Sup! Thanks man :)
They finally brought back the SEL
are you gonna do a new ford expedition 2018 review when it comes out?
I have a review of that car already :)
The Focus is due for a complete redesign. These have been around for six long years.
will there be a possibility that ford will finally throw away the junk dct and put a regular 6 speed like the one in the fusion? way to many issues with the dct for me to even think about buying the focus i love the looks both inside and out but the dct is garbage and thats a deal breaker
The 2016 focus se had a regular 6 speed available which I have. The 6F15 transmission
Drew Hinkle no its a dct
Same color same year. I got this car with 39 miles and under 300 miles it broke down twice, they replaced the battery twice and now it has acceleration noise . Im closer to winning a case with ford
i bought it 2 day ago but i bought a rs
Love the videos. The one you did on the 2016 year convinced me to get one myself in race red for my first car lol
Will have to look elsewhere for college commute duty.
why dont you like the 3 cyl ecoboost? its a very smooth and quiet engine, the 6 speed manual is also a bonus.... and its easily tunable as it is turbocharged
the engine looks very easy to work on
Hey, would you ever be able to do a Ford Focus sedan titanium- no hatch review?! That would be pretty cool
I love my 2016 Focus Titanium.
Hopefully there quality will come up,they have had many issues with Festiva and Focus models.
I have a '13 Focus SE, I might get a new 2017 Titanium automatic or a Volvo V40. Can't decide.
Not sure if you're still replying to comments on this video but
I recently bought a used 2016 Ford Focus SE with 10k miles and it has an appearance package and it's been a great car, but what I'm confused about is that it has almost everything that a titanium would have (leather seats, sunroof, premium sound system, etc) but it doesn't have push start and heated seats and some other stuff... so would you say that the car was a special order or is that a normal thing for a SE with an appearance package to have?
Not a fan of the new look, I find out of the ka, fiesta, focus and mondeo only the fiesta suits the new design language ford has used.
However, it looks alot better without a front plate.
Is a panic button a standard thing in the US? We don't get them in the UK. I've never heard of a car having one before. What does it do?
On Ford website, it shows SEL has front disc rear drum brake. How come this one in the video seems to have rear disc brake too?
that spaceship flex up ahead! ! focus are great quick little vehicle. makes you feel fast if you understand its dynamic. turns super fast if you know how to use it
The focus doesn't have the normal ford start up chime, it sounds like the old one from 5 years ago
Thinking about leasing one of these soon. Bad idea?
Yes.
Would recommend getting a sedan with manual transmission if you know how to drive one
Does the sel automatically include the heated seats, heated mirrors and heated steering wheel?
Is it a good first car?
A friend at work got around 20k out of the first set of tires and he is on his 4th clutch replacement.
dream car
I love my focus, it's a great car... but damn, I wish my dream car only cost 16k haha!
@Autovlog, does the 2018 Focus still come with that horrible automatic transmission?
way better then my parents 2009 focus
Auto Vlog you're the best 😘😍😍😍
So are you !
Do you know why xenon lights are rare in the US comparing to Europe?
Hi from UK I have a Ford B max titanium trim level with the auto gear box had it 3 years only 4.000 on the clock its been in the garage more times then on the road, changing Honda from next month.Very Disapointed.
1 liter at 120hp is not bad BUT - there is nothing to brag about driving a Focus. Rice has yet to come.
Focus will be as a 2019 model year or the 2018 will b the last year?
you review your cars at the local dump or junk yard?
Why have the 2.0 NA engine, when ford has a 1,6T...?
andrew7720 because it’s better
Can you do a review on a Ford Expedition or tell me the trim levels
is it better than owning a traverse
do the base models come in manual transmission or is it all dual clutch automatic
Hey can you get your hands on a police car Ford makes I'd love to see you do a review on one of those.
what do you think of the 1.0 triple, aka 3coboost?
I am 18 years old and I never owned a car I'm not sure if this would be the first choice to choose a car.
nah better keep looking mazda 3 maybe?
I am looking into buying a 2017 focus SE, does ford offer any kind of warranty for the bad transmission if it were to fail? Thanks.
nicholas regent Dont know if it was just my dealership but I have a lifetime drivetrain warranty on mine. Kinda sucks because I want to upgrade it but the warranty restricts it.
pleas do a video and told as what hapen when you dont pres the brake when you turn on a car
I have the 2018 Ford Focus SEL.
You cant get the 1.5 ecoboost? Thats the best engine of them all! 182HP and if you like to chip it 200HP is super easy!
hay caramba que focus tan hermos for saludos desde COLOMBIA
