- This Ferrari 250 GTO, possibly the most expensive car in the world - one sold for $70million recently - is owned by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, and was raced at the Goodwood Revival in 2011 by former F1 driver, Le Mans 24 winner and F1 commentator Martin Brundle. While Kenny Bräck's mighty Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe sped off into the lead, Brundle held his own behind, before Derek Hill - son of F1 champ Phil Hill - carved through the field in this stunning Maserati Tipo 151 and set off hunting down the GTO. But, catching was one thing, passing another and there started a ding-dong battle between the two drivers, pushing their near-priceless machines as hard as they could every lap. @@ahmadyounes4102 He's got plenty of historic cars, mostly racing cars. And best of all, they kept getting used. The GTO isn't used that much nowadays, though, I believed I read an article about it, Nick says it's because the other cars like the AC Cobras and Jaguar E Types kept getting "hotted up", that they get faster and faster, and as a result, no matter what they do, it's getting harder and harder for them to make the GTO keep up...
Still, the other cars were being raced. His Maserati Tipo 61 "Birdcage" won a race in 2020, his Bugatti Type 35 finished third in a race last year...
And not ramming into each other with these valuable pieces of art. Priceless.

some of them are replicas. but the detail of work done with them equals that of the original ones done in period correct fashion

@@paulocuento9949 That may be true for the Cobras, but I think they some of the major components were original parts. But that cannot be said for the Ferraris and that Maserati Tipo 151.

Not a bad investment, Nick Mason paid 37k, for this GTO in 1977.
It's now worth around 45 million!

One sold in 2018 for US$70M, a sale confirmed by historian and respected Ferrari authority Marcel Massini. If you Google 250GTO values there's lots of information on the subject. 😃

@@steviesindahouse4903 It did sell for around that price. Weathertech founder David MacNeil bought it in 2018 for around $80 mil in a private sale. I have had the privilege to see this car in person at Monterey Car week 2019.
Not necessarily. He’ll probably never realise that profit and if it weren’t so valuable he’d no doubt get to enjoy it a helluva lot more.

Beats the heck out of going to a car show where the trailer queens are all displayed behind ropes. They were built to be driven hard and they should be.
It’s fun to see them but if every rare car was driven to bits there would be none left. So there is some value in preserving a few
cameron child These cars are driven hard with a measure of caution. I would say that everyone of these has crashed and been repaired in their life.
There are very talented repair people out there that can fix anything. It just takes money.
@@donziperk I read about a historic racer who crashed his old Bugatti Brescia (worth around 250,000 UK Pounds, probably more). Thankfully, he didn't have any injuries, even when he's pinned underneath it. When he's interviewed, he said he's disappointed, not because he wrecked the car, but because he won't be able to race it while it is being repaired!
@@donziperk The same historic racer then rolled his Bugatti Type 51 GP car (the successor to the Type 35) at another event in 2017, and once again, he's pinned underneath the car, and had to be sent to the hospital for a check-up. Still, the next year (2018), he's back competing in the Type 51 again!

The reason why he is driving the 250 GTO so well is his huge balls racing a 45 million worth of a car, giving him that extra downforce.
Watched this about 3 times and it never gets old, love seeing these classics being pushed hard!

Well, the Daytona Coupe drivers were Kenny Brack and Tom Kristensen. Whoever the owner of the Daytona Coupe is, he's really making sure that he won't give other competitors much chance!
@@OKuusava yes. The Ferrari and the Maserati were fighting for second place in this race. The Daytona Coupe, driven by Tom Kristensen and Kenny Brack, is way up ahead in the lead.

He raced F3000 (F2 predecessor) in the late 90s. The story is he switched to team boss after following JPM through a corner, and realizing he didn't 'have it' 😊

I'm leaning slightly towards the Italians, but that doesn't make choosing any easier! The 250 GTOs and LMs were some of my all time favourites, but I always liked those insane V8 Maserati sports cars, like the 450S and the Tipo 151.

That is martins car not masons, masons car doesnt have the front aero intakes, martins is a late production, chassis 422 i think wheras masons is an early one, the first few do not have the 3 open holes as overheating was a problem discovered later on
@@srfhdx5584 I hadn't heard that Martin Brundle owned a GTO so I Googled it and found a tweet from Martin himself, on his own official Twitter account from 2018, of a picture of this very car, GTO number 22, in front of him in the traffic, presumably at the entry to an event like this one, talking about how he'd driven Nick's car on several occasions. Nick, I understand, bought his GTO back in 1977 for 37K Sterling, a heady price at the time by his own account. Previously he'd owned a 275GTB because a GTO was out of his reach .. but Dark Side Of The Moon changed that! Mark Hales, Martin's co-driver here was involved in the production of Nick's fantastic book, Into The Red, documenting his fantastic car collection (highly recommended; it includes recordings of many of the cars; Nick's BRM IMHO is the highlight .. WOW!!!) I understand Martin loves Eagle E Types and has owned at least one of them. There are evocations of cars like the GTO (which originally cost from the factory about US$18K), extremely difficult in some cases to tell from the originals and in some instances commissioned by owners of the originals, and some of which have the necessary paperwork to race in historic events like this, for very attractive prices. Perhaps you too could mix it with Martin Brundle (and 9 time Le Mans winner Tom Kristenson) at Goodwood, and maybe in a genuine original GTO too! Where there's a will there's a way! (Do check out Martin's tweet for yourself though talking about driving Nick's # 22 GTO) Cheers! 😃 P.S. Nowadays the original manufacturers themselves are getting in on the act of evocations, producing continuation cars that you can officially race in these events, including Jaguar with their D Type and E Type Lightweight, and Aston Martin, with their DB4GT!

Also Mr. Auriana, the owner I think of the Tipo 151 Maserati. The GTO may be an expensive machine nowadays, but the Tipo 151 is extremely rare.

How is there no kit cars for the 151 or the 154? Beautiful body lines just a little different, looks almost like a long Opel GT, I see a bit of Lister and the Ferrari from various angles.

Not a scratch on the Mercedes-Benz 190e 2.3 - 16 Cosworth. Which Martin said had one of the best chassis ever fitted to a four-door saloon.

Tyres are Dunlop Racing R7's (CR65) 204 compound (not very soft) and the wheels will be the original Borranis or replicas as they're less than half the price..

Michael Celani - Wheels are Borrani Record (aluminium rim) wires. Fronts are either RW3690 or 3711 (6.0x15) and the rears RW3715 or 3801 (6.5x15). Now you can order a set of your own! They fit a standard Rudge Whitworth 42 Splined hub just like an MGB or Triumph etc. but a set costs more than the car..

Anders Fritzon I doubt it’s the original engine. I know Pink Floyd’s drummer is rich, but it still makes sense to run it with a reproduction engine.

Ex F1 driver racing a 70M$ around a track. If I was driving the Maserati I wouldn’t dare even get close to it let alone try to pass it.
The Maserati is a pretty rare beast, I believe one of only 4 made, so also relatively expensive. The Maserati is also driven by Derek Hill, son of 1961 F1 World Champion Phil Hill...
A =LOT= of big names in those million-pound museum pieces... including F-1 and IndyCar winners.

Simply, yes. The Ferrari is Nick Mason's car, he bought it way back int he 1970s. The Maserati is an even rarer beast, one of only 4 built I think...

Jame's. No ... That is a Kamm back design..designed by a Dr. Kamm. Also found on Cobra Daytona coupe ...and others. Short life span in design.

It is normal for an older stick shift car to have a puff of smoke during gear changes...the engine is at high vacuum at that time and pulls oil past the piston rings...😉

nick mason once ordered a ferrari i think a f40 or f50 the factory thought it was someone having a joke so they asked him what he could put up as a deposit so nick mason said pink floyds next world toyr and they said it will be ready when you get back

Imagine the insurance premium to race a GTO. If it is even possible to insure it.
I believe it is possible to insure it, it had to be. I've read somewhere that Mercedes Benz pays some extremely hefty sum for the insurance of Sir Stirling Moss' 300SLR '722', and even more for the 300SLR 'Uhlenhaut Coupe'.
Insurance premiums are generally 1% of the cars value

In England insurance premiums are not 1 percent of the vehicle's value not even when the vehicle is brand new and worth as much as it can be. Nobody insures a £20,000 new car for £200 a year. Nobody especially insures a £10,000 used car for £100 a year.
From the specs, it seems the 4 liter Maserati should be faster than the GTO. What kind of horsepower are Ferrari 250s producing these days?

I mean, it's a racing car, it got its reputation and value doing exactly what you're seeing it do in the video...
If I were to own a historic racer, I'd just race it. I mean, it had a particular function, and it is fully able to do that, so why not use it...
..Cause the value has reached such a high level that the risk of racing it and wrecking it just insane, you cant deny that. I mean its great that they do it but from a financial point of view its not exactly smart. If you are in fact a multi millionaire and you would race this car that would make sense as you could afford to lose it. But any normal person would not. Thats why its pretty insane to see a 50m+ car being pushed to its limits.
The smoke we saw coming from the Ferrari, is Martin's attempt of a smoke screen.
The Maserati tipo 151 was always the faster car in this era, had it been sorted at all! The Maserati’s were all run by privateers. Maserati just built them and said ‘go’. Factory development and set up just wasn’t there yet the Maserati’s were still absurdly quick, but never set up quite correctly and not reliable in period.

Nick Mason is by far the least wealthy of all 250 GTO owners but he's the only one that routinely races the car and allows others to race it.
