    Sounds incredibly similar and more importantly sounds great, which is why people love the Pro~One. I've got the original but think it's awesome that a synth that is otherwise discontinued is back and people can get their hands on them.

    The craziest part of this video is that the couple of times I did notice a difference, I actually thought the Behringer sounded slightly warmer in the low end. 100% buying this little badboy. I can't wait for 10 years from now when people have forgotten about it being cool to hate on Behringer and you can pick up second-hand, authentic sounding, analogue synthesisers for the price of a round of drinks. What a time to be alive! :D And as always, fantastic comparison.

    • @XanderEwald
      @XanderEwald 11 месяцев назад +1

      I don’t think „warm“ is a sonic quality that many original users of the Pro-One particularly desired though. It’s much more associated with the „cold“ and aggressive sound of 1980s genres such as electro, techno, wave, industrial, EBM and the such.

    I recalibrated my pro one last year, had it from new, bought in 82. Think I did a recalibrate in the early 90's, but took my time this time and made sure it was spot on, which is really hard work with sensitivity of the tuning and scaling pots. What a difference to the sound though, never sounded so good.

    It's an almost accomplished replica of the SCI Pro-One, apart from envelope generators. What I found testing 3 units is they are ok on the short side but not so much on the long side: Filter Env Attack barely reaches 3.6 seconds, Decay 13 s, Release 28 s; Amplifier Env Attack 6.5 seconds, Decay 18 s, Release 32 s. I sent a video to Behringer support and they replied this is "as expected".

And it has programmable patches. And doesn’t need an unreliable midi cv converter. Or require contacts to be cleaned from time to time. Or have keyboard bushes that deteriorate over time.
      Bottom line. On its own it sounds great. In a mix it sounds great. And it’s $149 .

    I haven’t had the chance to play an original Pro-One but I’d say the main difference between the two for me as a hands on player would be the lack of an available keybed with 37 keys that compare to the original. Thanks Starsky, for a brilliant video. My own Pro-One needs a lot of work (new keyboard, new power supply - I get a lot of mains hum, and a good clean). It'll cost a lot! It makes more sense to me to get one of the new Behringers. It's simply stunning how good it sounds. I was in a group which had two pro-ones and they sounded different to each other so I am amazed that this new one sounds so close to an original - almost impossible to tell them apart.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  4 года назад +6

      The main thing I noticed was it’s so much easier to dial in a patch on the original. You can get there with the Behringer, but the smaller knobs require a bit more precision and time to get exactly what you want.

    Thanks for that. Looks like another for my mobile rack! I suspect your Pro-One seems to have been calibrated wrongly at some time in its history. Mine is in tune with tuning at near 12 o'clock and the oscillator tuning knobs around 12 o'clock. That would sort out the sync range restriction you mention. Also, I'd suggest you don't get your original's keyboard 'fixed', but instead replace it. There's a chap on the net who supplies modern replacements. Both of my originals have new keyboards now and they make a huge difference to the playability of the synth.

    • @StarskyCarr

      Thanks.. the only you sound is so difficult because of the interaction of the filt env amount, cutoff and reso settings plus keyboard tracking. Add that to the amp env and I just couldn’t nail it. On the OG it took seconds - I know folks talk about knob size being a real issue for them, but it’s never got the better of me before... just this one pesky patch!!! Also, I thought the Behringer may have had slight variations in the tone as the arp played which wouldn’t normally be an issue - but when matching exactly can send you insane (it may not even have been happening - just my ears playing tricks) - so after a few attempts I left it where you hear it before I started chewing the carpet.

      Douglas B. Hah thanks... No it’s very much a replica of pre-MIDI tech. Non of the knobs send or receive MIDI. There’s a Behringer app I’ve never used for changing legato modes and key priority (I think!) but that’s about as far as MiDI implementation goes.

      Making it programmable would mean adding a digital control layer to it, and it is then not the same instrument at all. It would also increase the price, and people who don’t know what they’re talking about would be angry it costs too much. People are incredibly spoiled now.
      In any case, this synth is so simple and easy to use (yet deep) that if you have practiced at all with subtractive synths, you should be able to dial up anything you like within 20-30 seconds. There are reasons this is a classic, and one of them is the absolutely stellar ease of use.

    Everything about the sound of the Pro One is the 5 CEM chips inside. Behringer cloned those pretty much exactly and has been manufacturing them under CoolAudio. So it's no surprise at all that these two synths are virtually identical in sound as they are closer clones than anything Behr have yet done.

    As for Sequential, thank you for making the original synth 40 years ago. Many if us still appreciate this in 2021. Sequential are a great company, really like the direction they are going in too with the Prophet 6 and new Prophet 5 revision 4.0. Who would have thought back then in 2021 there would still be new reissue PRO 1s being made and new Sequential Prophet 5s?

    The Behringer seems a little bit brighter and clearer with slightly less low mid range. I'm listening on studio headphones and am a mix engineer. This is just a comparison of one particular vintage Pro One, but I prefer the Behringer here. I could and have picked which is which in this video eyes closed after getting to know that difference about halfway through the video. m not saying I have the world's best hearing but I think most people with trained ears would hear this difference. Starsky is saying they are identical, but he is saying that in the moment while preforming the video. I'm sure if he put some good headphones on and just listened he would hear it too.

    • @thomasmorus3406

      Sure they do not sound identical 100%. And a professional with trained ears will be able to hear the difference using the proper equipment.

    Personally I'm very thankfull Behinger are not ignoring rack synths. In my opinion there isn't much point to having multiple keyboards wasting a lot of space, one good master keyboard should be enough for most scenarios. I wish more manufacturers would design rack versions of their new keyboards.

    Double-triggering and dead notes are the problems I have with the keyboard in my 1985 Clef B-30 Microsynth. I'm refurbing it and adding a board to mod it for 1 V/oct so I can use external controls.

    Fantastic comparison. I watched and also looked away. Wow! I can hear the Moog’s and Roland clones as being different (but great all the same) but this is wow. I’m glad you articulated one thing I thought which is your ability to tweak them on the fly. Matching positions on pots doesn’t tell you about sonic similarities IMO, more design ones.     You are right to mention that 40's yo synth doesn't sound the same at the begining of their life ; that's why when you compare a RE-303 or a good diy X0XB0X with a TB303, the old TB sound "duller" (not bad though XD), when the value of the components used in the RE and X0X are measured to match "exactly" the original, that's the main reason imho that they sounds differents ;
    Thank you for your work, and glad your channel grows !! You deserve it, you are very good at comparison and you have good taste

    What a time to be alive. Roland and DSI have both been complacent in their own ways for years... Roland is stuck in a bizarre paradox of cashing in on their 80s classics with VA "clones" that for the most part none of the synth fanatics wanted. For at least 30 years people have been begging Roland to just reissue an actual analogue TB-303, to the point where dozens of clones have been made by other companies since the 90s. And instead, they give us an overpriced VST in a silver box. Meanwhile, Behringer releases an actual analogue 303 for half the cost of Roland's digital emulation. The JD-XA was the only innovative thing they've done in years, and they've all but abandoned it, plus their new flagship "Jupiter" synth is an overpriced hunk of junk. And then DSI is guilty of cashing in on their brand name and price gouging everything they release, to the point where it's more expensive than what the average enthusiast is able to afford. Sure, they're quality instruments, but there's still an element of snobbish greed at play. So I'm delighted to see Behringer come and hopefully dethrone both companies and make analog gear accessible to the average person. Like Korg, they actually LISTEN to what the public wants.

    • @Ellende

      Not maybe the place to be bitching about Roland, but I completely agree.

    • @ChristineLeeMusic
      @ChristineLeeMusic 4 года назад +8

      Roland's days are numbered unless they change their attitude. The customer is always right. They were foolish. They could have made a VCO Jupiter-16 with an arpeggiator that clocks to MIDI, with built in effects and probably sold it for $20,000. But now that Behringer and Korg have their very affordable VCO analogs out, it's too late for Roland. Sequential is too expensive. This Behringer Pro 1 makes the sounds I need and that is all that matters - not the brand name.

    • @masonarcher2998
      @masonarcher2998 3 года назад

      Nuh uh. DSI isn’t gouging, they’re just making quality instruments that actually are comparable in price to similar models from other companies. There’s no way you’re going to convince me that a Pro 3 and a Korg Monologue belong in the same category in terms of quality. I am an average enthusiast and SAVED to buy a Sequential synth because it’s worth it. DSI/Sequential is making pro-grade hardware, if you’re an “average enthusiast” why would you expect to get pro-grade gear on the cheap? Behringer is barely innovating and are recycling classics and eventually you’re going to have to make something new or people are going to get bored. DSI and Roland will be just fine. Just because you’re mad you can’t afford higher tier synths doesn’t mean the companies making them are gouging.

    Did Behringer clone the first step is a miss when a step sequence is externally clocked? I'm the guy who did the "Chariots of Fire" NAMM demo with one of these for the bass line. As long as it faded in, it worked. Start it cold and it was obvious. Even if Behringer's works properly, all else considered they did a great job. I took the Pro One patch book I wrote over to friend who has one and it was dead on.

I did do guitar center once but they have a thing for putting the earliest date to get buyers, reverb has a similar date. Crap, I'm going to have to buy one now! It makes sense that if the circuits are the same they should sound the same. Major major advatnage with the Behringer of price, much smaller size, MIDI and the components like capacitors and transistors only last so long so I would be very wary of owning a very old synth like this.

      After having it for a while the only real difference is the envelopes (I mentioned it here). Turns out they’re digital which is why I was having difficulty dealing in specific times - the resolution didn’t include them. But there’s been an update so they’re better than demo’d here. Tone wise though you’ll never tell the difference.

    A question for the pro-1:
    Does the external Input go though the filter, lfo and envelopes just like the oscillators? Because would that make it possible to use (polyphonic)samples, played on a computer with midi keyboard, to replace the oscillators (and still trigger the envelope by connecting the same midi keyboard to the synth but with both oscillators mixed to zero)?
    (also, I suppose it wouldn't get additional noise to my input since it uses the same knob on the mixer, or does it?
    Please let me know.

    Outstanding comparison. You are lucky to have one of the earlier Pro-Ones. The later keybed was unrepairable. When the membrane contacts die, it took months to get repaired. And that was in the 80's. The MIDI implementation allows so many control options on the Behringer. The sounds are spot on. The complex waveform created from multiple wave shapes always gave the P-1 a different character than the Mini or the SH-101. Looking forward to the units landing in the states.
