Battle begins at 02:08
Showing how to find and unlock the door that leads to the most powerful enemy of the game: Culex. This guy easily gives Smithy a run for his money.
I came to this fight with Bowser and Mallow for the same reason of Smithy's battle: every other video has mostly Geno/Toadstool team and it's worth showing how hard Mallow can hit if you know the weaknesses of the Crystals.
Being a super boss of the old Square games you have actually to find him, you really can't come across this guy by accident and even if you do he's kind enough to give a chance to back off. He's not bluffing when he says he's strong; either you come here prepared or he's going to absolutely trample over your team.
What makes Culex so damn difficult is the sheer power he has with his crystals, each crystal accompanying Culex can use any spell ranging from the most harmless to the ones used only in the final maps of the game. The good news is that once you destroy two or three of them the fight is as good as won, the bad news is you have to survive until then.
This fight was a nigh disaster, though, because the Crystals screwed me over for the first half of the fight with Red using Corona twice and Green using Petal Blast twice on a row; it was kind of my own fault for since I did not pack enough Freshen Ups for this fight. Culex was also pretty uncooperative nullifying with my Power Blasts and Crystallines with his Shredder.
Geno Boost (perfect timed)/Bracers/Crystalline or at very least Lazy Shell (armor) isn't really optional here unless you're around Level 27+ because without any of these Culex and the Crystals are so strong they can wipe your party in a single turn if you get a bad roll of enemy specials.
Things to watch out for:
* Red Crystal - Corona.
* Blue Crystal - Ice Rock and Solidify.
* Yellow Crystal - Sandstorm, Water Blast, Blast, Storm and Boulder.
* Green Crystal - Electroshock, Petal Blast and Light Beam.
* Culex - Shredder, Dark Star, Flame Stone and an animation-less (blockable) attack.
Weaknesses:
* Red Crystal - Ice (Mallow's Snowy)
* Blue Crystal - Fire (Mario's Orbs)
* Yellow Crystal - Lightning (Mallow's Shocker)
* Green Crystal - Jump (Mario)
“Perhaps in another time, another game, we may have been mortal enemies…” oh good
I hope this game is the remake
God I really hope they keep him in the remake, seeing this dude in such a stylized, fun game was the coolest shit ever.
In case you want an explanation for what's up with Culex:
Essentially, the entire fight is a Final Fantasy reference, which in case you didn't know, was also developed by Square. Final Fantasy often has "superbosses" hidden behind similar locks to Culex, and also usually had 4 elemental crystals (at least, at the time).
Also, the music is the boss battle theme, victory fanfare, and prelude from FF4.
Hope this helps someone out!
I love how he just abruptly pops when he dies as opposed to flashing and dropping coins like all other bosses
Culex is about to have the definitive best rendition of the SNES FF2 boss fight music in existence.
My man really said Final Fantasy II.
The remix of it in FFXIV is pretty great.
I think you mean FF4...
I dunno...Pixel Remaster'll be hard to top imo
@@Mewcrozmawell, it was Final Fantasy 2 in the US (before all of the collections released)
I'm genuinly shocked someone actually used Mallow for this fight. Good on ya!
Yo, wouldn't it be hilarious if the remake rendered this guy in HD-2D like all the recent Square Enix remakes?
Bruh you’re right lmao
That would actually be so sick
Seems like that's quite possible. It doesn't look like Culex was ever intended to be 3D as it wasn't pre-rendered like everything else.
I never even considered that omg
Personally i can see this happening rather tham culex getting an updated model
I would take it tbh
"Im Culex, dark knight of Vanda"
He must be in Cecil's army
Clutch of Mallow getting the final hit after twenty minutes with a pair of cymbals
Aww man thank you so much for doing this battle with Mario, Bowser and Mallow. It seems to be the least popular out of all parties when it comes to fans and honestly it's my favorite because it feels like a good challenge while still not being bad. It was great to see someone beat the hardest boss in the game with my favorite trio! 🌟
I love the way you planned this battle. Also, the way Culex says good-bye. It was a great video, thanks! 🤗
I was really hoping we'd end up facing him and the Dark Mage in an upcoming FF one of these days. We never did.
I guess seeing him in the remake in full 3D will be the next best thing.
It's because his entire English dialogue was pulled out of the translators butt. Ted Woolsey is well known for his...."unique" scripts such that he's a tropenamer on TV Tropes, but this is one of the bigger ones.
In the Japanese, Culex is the "King of Evil" in his world that's come to Mario's because he sensed some power unknown to him and he's worried it can be used against him, hence him showing up to destroy it. Beating him has him return to his own world, still not totally sure what it was that he sensed or how Mario overcame him.
His world is 2D so beyond the dimensional differences that keeps him from being able to move freely, the powers he sensed are the bonds of friendship and overall positive energy of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Hes the only 2d character in mario rpg and he will be 2d in the remake
Can't wait to hear the new version of this song in the remake
Since there’s cutscenes AND voice acting in the remake. That means this dude is getting a whole cutscene next time
wait there's voice acting???
Voice acting!? Where did you hear this?
@@BasementDweller_ I wasn’t actually confirmed. Just some guy said since there was lip syncing it’s in, I kinda forgot if there was any other reason why he thought that. It might’ve been PapaGenos

Awesome 😄, I had my money on Mallow delivering the coup de grace. An entertaining battle, seeing as you didnt utilize the usual trifecta of Mario, Bowser, and Peach.
12:04
Always loved the Snowy ⛄ and his shy blinks, like "what the heck am I even doing here? It aint winter yet!"
Usually people do Geno/Peach for this. I can't stand using Geno because of the 9999 Geno Whirl.
My first attempt was Mallow/Peach.
Peach is so OP in this game, surprised you didn't use her.
Frying pan ftw
Once you get the frying pan, yep its over.
Why is Peach broken in every game she’s playable in
@@WhyHandlesIMeanFroggchampshe ain't broken she just powerful
That music hits hard still 32 years later
Can’t wait for the the remake to come out and see what does the secret boss may look like in 3D 😅
He’s not in 3d. 😓
@@alexander1274 well not in cinematic 3D environments format for sure, man 😒
That battle is one of the most intense I've, I wanna see Culex again in the remake
Who came here due to the remake being confirmed?
the valentina laugh tho in the castle
I can't wait to see how this looks in the remake
Stop. It’s clear you’re bandwagoning here.
I remember I accidentally fought him off a rented cartridge from Blockbuster when i was a kid having no idea what i got myself into. Luckily whoever played it before me had my team LOADED but it still took FOREVER!! After the win I didn't have the slightest clue of what just happened lmao
What an awesome memory
I don't know why so many people think he'll be 3d in the remake, the plot is literally that he's 2d and can't enter the mushroom kingdom because it and all the characters are prerendered 3d, he's gonna be 2d-hd in the remake
No he's not gonna be 2d in the remake
That's assuming they don't change that. Esp seeing as how that was only in the Japanese version of the game
@@Malice900 why
Source?
nintendo will probably forget and go "yeah make him 3d, this is for modern audiences"
Props on doing this without Peach, lazy shell armor, or any pick me ups
If this isn’t the game remake I’ma cry
You know Square Enix. They never forgot him.
I can’t wait to see a 3d mini culex sprite
Better idea: they make it into more like a cutscene like they did in the pmd remake
The literal plot of the game is that culex is 2d and can't enter the 3d mario world, he straight up sqys as much in japan and he's the only character not prerendered in the game, so he won't be 3d in the remake and will be 2d-hd
In ff4 when you heard that music you knew shit was gonna hit the fan pretty instantly…it was the same in this game ! LOVED IT !
They better bring this back in the remake, hope it’s not a Pokémon Battle Tower situation where they just leave it out
I went crazy when I heard the final fantasy 2/4 boss song when I first found this boss. was one of the few people that actually knew what it was before final fantasy 7 came out
Scrolling by seeing Culex fight in the title. Video length 20 minutes. Ahhh yeah there's my PTSD from this fight.
The classic joke of Culex fight comments sections immemorial:
“I am matter.
I am antimatter.
Wait, fu-“
He is definitely in the remake. But what would really be cool is if they made it a secret dungeon with him at the end.
This was a tough af fight back in the day. My only hope was stocking up on rock candy and just scorching the earth.
mallow's shocker really does help
Everyone is talking that if Culex is not on the remake they should put Sephiroth because of smash or x reason… but how come no one talks about the actual character from the ff franchise that can jump from game to game? I am of course talking of Gilgamesh :)
Gilgamesh would be a worthy opponent for Mario and we could say again he came from the rift :)
I love that idea
I need battle on the big bridge in the mario rpg soundfont now XD
Culex isn't even from final fantasy, in japan he's literally just a king ruling on his own who sensed a power in the mushroom kingdom he thought might be a threat to him, the power being friendship, and he can't enter the mushroom kingdom because it's 3d and he's 2d
The plumber of light
My friend fucked up the Lazy Shell quest and had to beat Culex without it.
Dear God that must have been a nightmare. Can't wait to experience it in the remake if it happens.
I did without the Lazy Shell. It's not so bad. All you have to do is to rely on Peach and have good safety accessories equipped so you don't suffer from status attacks like Sandstorm or Petal Blast.
Having your entire party be frozen for turns on end because you have to micromanage between attacking OR using items to bring your party back to normal is not a fun time and the video here could've easily gone south.
Using status buffs seems counterintuitive since Culex just gets rid of them with Shredder, too.
I got his ass before doing the Axem Rangers battle, so, really, it's not so hard.
Culex fans on their way to play Super Mario RPG for the first time
Mallow? He got benched as soon as Peach joined the party.
Forrealz 😅
@@derekdirk3829 Mallow's Ally Bonus is Magic ATK. That will let his spells and that of his allies' hit harder.
He’s really good in the Sunken Ship area right after you get Peach since Mallow’s Thunderbolt absolutely shreds literally everything there and he has HP Rain
I forgot the wooden-sounding "pop" when they turn into mushrooms 😂
Curiosity got me into this match 27 years ago . I sweat like a pig.
I once fought Crulex using nothing but Geno Boost and Rock Candies as my only attack option
I didn't I used Peach Lazy shell armor on her until it runs out of FP then use the POWER boost item instead of Geno boost and still use Bowser as your 3rd but only use Power Boost + Rock Candies after Culex runs of of FP.
How did you get enough rock candies to do over 4000 damage to Culex
@@Plasticsoldier64 To save time I went to Seaside town item shop and bought some basic mushrooms, then went to the shop that you exchange your mushrooms. If it is a flower mushroom, you get a flower tab, and and such. That is how you can farm for rock candies and even get your Flower Points up to 99 even
its greg, lord of all elements
So does anyone know what the move shredder actually does or is it to make the fight a little easier
I looked it up it undoes any status buffs like up attack and up defense
ya I thought this is like final fantasy in Mario when I played it years ago.. some final boss with the 4 elements
This guy Looks Something out Of Final fantasy
Red The Fearless Maybe because he is...?
And the game is partly made by the Squaresoft(Square Enix) the same company that made Final Fantasy series
woosh
Don't tell me genius 😑

This fight is pretty cheese if you have the turtle shell armor. Give it to Peach (who can cast life) and she will never die.
Yup! The lazy shell will do the trick with peach
who else just saw the version of Culex in the remake lol. he is exactly the same
literally lol, still a sprite which is cool
You don't mess with perfection. 😌
you clearly didnt do the post game content
@mckdnfken4354 i know he's 3D in the post game content. 2 weeks ago nobody knew about Culex 3D 😑
I'm so glad I never got to try facing that boss.
I would be entirelly annoyed by how long the boss turns take.
But you missed out on the best accessory in the game, Quartz Charm, that gives the wearer halves damage incurred, 1.5x damage dealt, and instadeathproof
Uh... Not sure if I missed much. I managed to beat the game without it, and it was easier and less annoying than the Cullex fight.
@@9tailedKitsuneEh it kinda overkill at that point as you already beat the hardest boss but the fight itself is fine. The second best accesary is the safety ring and attack scarf which is much easier to get.
The key is to get rid of the wind (green) crystal ASAP.
Final fantasy music ?
Final Fantasy IV boss theme xd
Composed by Nobuo Uematsu, yes! 🖤
I found that equipping Peach with the Star Egg and using it in conjunction with all available Rock Candy you have helps make shorter work of this fight.
What does Star Egg do again? It's been a few decades lol.
@@stripedrajang3571 It's a reusable item that hits all enemies for 100 damage, unblockable. You earn it by winning the "Look the other way" game 100 times at Grate Guy's Casino.
I remembered the lowest level I defeated culex was with my party in an average of level 16 💪
Yoo nice job!!
I remember seeing this in EGM2 and Gamefan magazines as the Final fantasy boss
The hardest boss fight in the game.
Not really, if you had his weaknesses. I honestly found Jinx round 3 to be harder, mostly because I couldn't get the timing right for his attacks and insta-die. If you know what you're doing, the Culex battle, while still tough, isn't that bad. Each of the crystals can be taken down by their respective weaknesses rather easily. But no, when I came prepped, this wouldn't be THAT hard.
I wish there was commentary, I've come from your Cave Story videos, they were great.
Mallow is the best ☁️ 👑
this Boss is a Secret Boss and the Hardest Boss in the game back then in the 90s, but The game was made by Nintendo & Squarenix, so now the remake i thinki it´s Only made by Nintendo, saying that, i really hope that this Boss get include it if not then they need to make another way to get that item as reeward
What you mean Nintendo is working with square on this. It’s even in the copyright
squaresoft.
squareenix didnt exist.
I know you wanted to play with Mallow and Bowser to showcase different gameplay, but MAN Bowser is such a nothing character if all he does in this fight is use items lol.
Endgame Bowser needs a serious buff in the remake.
....a part of me wonders if we'll actually ever see this guy in an actual ff game, just to screw with veterans
Lore of Super Mario RPG - Legend of Seven Stars [Secret Boss] Culex momentum 100
Oh my god. I struggled so much on culex. Well,by struggling i meant that there was just so much waiting. Bassicaly i had mario, geno and peach. Mario and geno fell down but peach had the lazy shell armor and the frying pan. Which made her strong against all types of attacks. I used her to destroy the water crystal and then as i destroyed it the crystals and culex lost their FP. It was time for mario to act. So i used a spell to bring him back. And then along with mario with his lazy shell weapon and being supported by peach. The crystals and culex were a breeze.
Literally just experienced this also. Peach and mario had their lazy shells. Mario and Geno kept dying a lot, but I slowly kept taking out the crystals. Loss of FP on the enemy's end, and then I just proceeded to win. It was a very long fight. I was at level 21. Beat him when I was a kid years ago at level 30
Do yall think this fight is going to be easy in the remake?
They may make it harder, or keep it the same. If they keep the fight the same I'm willing to bet we'll get a second superboss that will be VERY much more difficult.
I hope it's at least as difficult. Though if it's as close to the original as possible you could probably still just rock candy his crystals to death to make your life easier.
If the Lazy Shell armor STILL exists then yes the battle will still be a joke if Peach equips it Mallow still SUCKS though.
@@veghesther3204Yeah peach having the second best AOE skill plus being the best healer and can revive with low flower cost make her a must have in any party. Either Buff Mallow utility alot or make Peach healing worse.
Great, now i want to play ff4 again.
What does the quartz charm do? It looked like no effect on status
It halves the enemie's damage, while it gives you 50% more damage, and also makes you inmune to fatal blows.
When the last crystal was destroyed I thought to myself ‘you’re so fucked’. Good job.
I remember going at this boss at max level like "damn gonna wreck him this time" third turn I was down
All ultimate weapons too?? Damn
I remember saving all my Red Essence for this boss exactly and spamming it with those attack buffs. Good times. Can’t wait for the remake version of the fight.
One things for sure, the remake needs to make more items be key such as 0:21
Like WHY are items like the fireworks, wallet, bright card, among others part of the regular item inventory when they should've been in the key items
well fireworks do play a role for the ending of the game where an X amount will determine what gets displayed at the end with the max of 5 fireworks. The Bright card can be sold for frog coins, and while the wallet can be turned into the toad for a flower coin it can also be sold which only results in the toad being mad at Mario for the rest of the game.
Thing is these items aren't really considered Key Items due to them not being important or integral to the main story. Fireworks can easily be ignored especially for their given price, the bright card would require one with the knowledge to go back to Booster Tower which many wouldn't do and even if they did would then need to beat Knife Guy's game and in order to use the Bright Card would need to find the hidden entrance in Bean Valley, and the Wallet as mentioned earlier can be given back or sold for a decent amount of money.
The Playstation and xbox got no competition with the snes
Haven't fought him in this game but he is a super boss in a Touhou fan game called Labyrinth of Touhou 2. He's called the Elemental Crystal Guardian in that game. He's the same as in in RPG but he regenerates HP based on how many of his crystals are alive.
Labyrinth of touhou 2 is a legendary game dude, fuck yeah

The green and yellow crystals are the biggest threat really so my best strat was have two party members work on destroying the two crystals and had the third focus on Culex.
What is Culex gonna look like remastered in a few months???
It would be hilarious if he looked exactly the same lol
2d-hd, in japan he literally talks about being confused about the third dimension mario has, him being 2d is why he can't enter mario's world and they'll have to keep it
The exact same.
Never beat this guy! Hardest boss of the game for sure!
He's actually easy if you have Mario, Bowser, and Peach as your party. Also, Peach should have the lazy shell armor so she takes only 1 damage. Have plenty of magic replenishing items for Peach's healing magic.
@@bigginaf well this is an easy game overall even for an RPG however all things considered this is definitely the most difficult boss of the game. I do hope when the remake comes out, it’s a LITTLE more difficult than the SNES version.
@mrtblackmann9874 I don't disagree with you. He his the hardest boss in the game. You just have to be prepared for the battle and it's not that bad.
My strategy is equip mario with lazy shell and lazy shell armor (many would perfer giving peach the lazy shell armor but this is my way of doing things), id have bowser with an accessory to protect you from becoming a mushroom andbequip him with your best gear for him, and my 3rd would be Geno with the same loadout as bowser. Do what i said and yea, culex might down bowser and geno a couple of times but culex will have a hell of a hard time downing mario thanks to lazy shell armor. Only dark star (that im at least aware off) can still 1 shot mario so its important to come stacked with pick me ups. Now on the attack, start by wiping out the crystals from right to left (unless a specific color is more threatening and focus all 3 party on that crystal). Once all are down, attack culex at your descretion. The likelyhood of a gameover with my set up is 10% so you got a 90% chance youll win unless you get terribly unlucky or something went horribly wrong (like made an action you didnt intend to do by accident).
Best of luck

It's not really a secret boss since it was in the player's guide from the 90s.
Eh, more 'optional' super boss if you will.
If it required a guide for you to find it, it's secret. I had the original game on snes back then and I didn't have a guide. Sure seemed secret to me when I discovered it. There wasn't much of a hint to finding the boss, it was purely optional and you had to go out of your way to figure out there was this optional boss.
Without a 'guide' you could play the game in it's entirety and never know he existed.
To be fair, it wasn't too hard to figure out ( i think, I remember the plant monster next door to culex kinda hints about him but I don't remember the hint about the shiny stone. I just remember getting the Shiny Stone not knowing what to do with it and remembered the sealed door and the plant mentioning that his neighbor mumbles stuff about crystals and I was like "shiny stone..crystal..maybe?" and it worked.
