You can win on Level 20 or below if you have some good items like Rock Candy, Fire/Ice bombs, power blast/crystallines, red essence, and kerokerocolas. Even without Lazy Shells. I enjoyed beating him with a natural level of experience points for being in Monstro Town the first time, without going around and fighting a ridiculous number of enemies to get to a higher level. All at Level 15, my party was: Mario: Attack Scarf Geno: Safety Ring (don't listen to those who say you need Jinx Belt/Amulet-- the key is to protect against the crystals' MAGIC attacks, and Safety Ring is far better for that) Toadstool: Zoom Shoes (also better against Magic and lets her turn come up quicker) Use a Power Blast and then unload your Rock Candies; they'll get 300 instead of 200 damage. Use the 2nd Red Essence on Mario and use Ultra Jump, and Water Crystal should follow. Use Geno to Boost people after Culex uses Shredder and use A attacks on Earth Crystal. Once Wind and Water Crystal are down, just Super Jump on Fire Crystal and it should go down pretty quick. Earth Crystal is too resistant to Jump attacks and Culex's speed isn't enough to worry about. Use flame attacks and Geno's A attacks on Earth Crystal while Toadstool revives. Culex's FP will likely be gone and then it'll be easy. I was able to finish him off with just Mario and no FP-- just repeated Troopa Shell attacks. Way more fun than being at Level 30, IMO.
Impressive. I defeated Culex at level 18, and I thought I was an expert. It also took me three tries (3rd attempt was a charm). Mario/Geno/Bowser On the third attempt I equipped Bowser with a Safety Ring.
Looking at his set up and figured it was overkill before he even started the fight. There was never any real threat in this fight to lose. I enjoy a challenge.
I beat Culex with my characters at level 18. I have the Japanese version of the game and have played through, but cannot beat Culex. I cannot for the life of me remember what I had back then to beat Culex. I did use Mario, Peach, and Geno for the battle (Peach and Geno were my favorite characters to use in general). Hopefully, when I return home, I can find my SNES copy of the game to see what items I had on my characters and do the same for the Japanese version. I even leveled them up and still had trouble beating Culex.
"Thank you, brave knight. I will treasure this memento of my journey here. Perhaps in another time, another game, we may have been mortal enemies... Let us part as comrades in arms."

Man! I remember the epic battle Culex when I was younger. Culex is one of the toughest side bosses in Super Mario RPG! I had to grind my team levels, stats, and everything SOOO! up high 😳just to match him. Nostalgia nightmare!!😱
Cool video. Glad to see someone tried on their own. As long as you have the Lazy Shell armor and a few Mid Mushrooms, Culex isn't hard so much as time-consuming. I went in at level 24 with Mario, Peach and Bowser, Mario in the Lazy Shell armor. His crystals kept killing the other two, so I just left them unconscious and kept aiming at Culex. Since the Lazy Shell armor protected Mario from basically everything, it was just a matter of hammering on Culex while he and his crystals ran out of MP.
For that its BEST For Peach to equip it simply REVIVE Bowser and Mario after it and the 4 Crystals have no FP left then process to use at LEAST 10 Rock Candies to kill all 4 crystals at once once they have no FP left.
I Remember me and my brother just.... LOVING this game when we was around 12/13 in 1996.. it was absolutely EVERYTHING to us.. and then we found Chrono Trigger and REALLY went nuts. then a year or two later got the PS1, and it was all up hill from there... FF7, Castlevania SOTN... Silent Hill, Resident Evil 1 and 2, Twisted Metal 1 and 2, Bushido Blade, Parasite Eve... hell ANYTHING Squaresoft put out back then was Golden.. i could go on for HOURS.
This guy is easy once you figure out a strategy. Mario with lazy shell uses items, princess heals, gino does damage. It's a conservative strategy, but it seems to work every time.
If they want to increase the level cap, they need to scale up the difficulty to match. A typical playthrough will finish at about Lv.27 or so, plenty to take down the final boss (especially if you can beat Culex).
Well, the latest direct showed a teaser of Culex so he'll be in it! What I also hope is that his artstyle is like HD-2D, like Octopath Traveller and Live a Live remake, on par with the original Japanese script
@@suckerman7gm The latest trailer also shows off the new team attack and how perfect attacks will hit enemies in an AOE. Further reason why the level cap needs increased and/or perhaps HP values doubled. Those 2 additions alone will make the game even easier.
it's funny culex is basically a stereotype of a final fantasy final boss they're basically saying, "lol we know all of our final bosses are pratically the same."
Agree. Just have everyone use the Armor in the last part of Bowser's Keep, then have Toadstool equipped with Safety Ring. Mario with Troopa Pin. And Geno with Ghost Medal. Done, son. EDIT: Quartz Charm is a combined version of Ghost Medal & Troopa Pin, minus Safety Ring's immunity to Status Ailments.
@@solaireofastora1808 Yes. Troopa Pin gives you 20 points in Speed, and provides with 50% Attack & Mg. Atk during battle. Ghost Medal provides a 50% Defense & Mg. Def during battle. Quartz Charm does both & makes you immune to an enemy's 1-hit KO move.
I always, ALWAYS, loved this encounter. No matter how many times I play it, I never get tired of fighting Culex. I specially found the Geno character unique and interesting, I would like to see him back in a future game. Even his own game may be interesting.

@teeman9266 That's because this is more of a cameo appearance of a SquareSoft style boss. They collaborated with Nintendo to create this game. The battle music that plays is actually the boss theme from Final Fantasy 4. The victory fanfare and harp music that plays after the battle are signature themes for the entire series.

Either Culex returns in RPG Remake, or add the final boss from Final Fantasy XVI in it. An m rated character getting his ass whooped by Mario and gang would be satisfying for me. That or add Sephiroth. Mario’s revenge for swinging him around from that Smash Bros. trailer.
This fight actually references Final Fantasy IV, V and VI. The battle music is the boss theme from IV, the victory fanfare is from VI and the prelude after the battle is from V.
I remember getting SO mad at this fight I went and farmed Rock Candy from the Factory Yaridovich's to spam on Culex. It worked quite well as his defense and those of his crystals don't negate against Rock Candy, which did 200 damage to all enemies. Spam that about 6 times to clear all the Crystals and Culex himself is easy.

I was able to finish him off with just Mario and no FP-- just repeated Troopa Shell attacks. Way more fun than being at Level 30, IMO.
Impressive. I defeated Culex at level 18, and I thought I was an expert. It also took me three tries (3rd attempt was a charm).
Mario/Geno/Bowser
On the third attempt I equipped Bowser with a Safety Ring.
I even leveled them up and still had trouble beating Culex.
now I wonder if this boss will return in the remake and if so, how would he look
@ChonkoTheAzumarilli really hope that isnt the case but thats still pretty possible
@ChonkoTheAzumarillwhich one?
Considering that Square Enix made the HD-2D games, I wouldn't be surprised if Culex looked like in the HD-2D style.
Can't wait to see this fight in hd!
He'll still be 16 bit.

"Lazy Shell, son. It gives me more defenses than I logically need. You can't hurt me, Culex."
I hope that CULEX is not the only hidden boss for the remake if there are no more FF bosses it would be epic to be able to enjoy them and in great difficulties
Hoping for one new superboss with the boss theme of FF6...

I will give anything to see culex again w/ the ff4 battle 2 music remastered. ANYTHING.
I absolutely love the way the final fantasy boss music is done in the higher Mario tone😍
why can't nintendo collaborate with square like this anymore
This game needs a REMASTER/REMAKE on Switch!!!!
UHM, you didnt even let the victory fanfare song play for like a second : O I CAME FOR THIS REASON ALONE : (
hugoboshcomn me too xD

This guy is easy once you figure out a strategy. Mario with lazy shell uses items, princess heals, gino does damage. It's a conservative strategy, but it seems to work every time.
This game is getting a remake. I really hope Nintendo puts Culex in there
Same.
I sure hope the remake does 3 things
1. increase the lvl cap to at least 50
2. Add some additional content
3. Keep this fight.
@@CaptToilet well it seems there is an easy mode planned so I guess your assumption might end up being true.
it's funny culex is basically a stereotype of a final fantasy final boss they're basically saying, "lol we know all of our final bosses are pratically the same."
+TheGoldminor actually he is the boss lol, they are one of the same kind, sorry to burst your bubble.
+TheGoldminor no they are actually the same.. ask square they let it go back then for publicity.

Real my ass. The Lazy shell makes this battle easy.
And? How is that not real?
@@PantyLunatic Thanks
@@PantyLunatic So. The quartz is a good item?
@@solaireofastora1808 Yes. Troopa Pin gives you 20 points in Speed, and provides with 50% Attack & Mg. Atk during battle. Ghost Medal provides a 50% Defense & Mg. Def during battle. Quartz Charm does both & makes you immune to an enemy's 1-hit KO move.
3:02 RIP it’s all over now
I always, ALWAYS, loved this encounter. No matter how many times I play it, I never get tired of fighting Culex. I specially found the Geno character unique and interesting, I would like to see him back in a future game. Even his own game may be interesting.
It becomes clearly evident that the gameplay of Super Mario RPG indeed derives in reference to the Final Fantasy games, thus proving that Square was the one responsible for the majority of the works, and the music that plays serves equivalent to the "Battle 2" theme from Final Fantasy IV.
I never seen this boss before... from the looks of it, he's more like inspired rather than originated from any Final Fantasy games before VII.
Obviously, he is a reference for Final Fantasy.
Oscar Lopez he did not appeared on any final fantasy games. Only in this game
Thanks for the explanation. :3
You can notice the FF victory fanfare in the end of the fight explicitating the reference.
Rarofra how about the FF4 boss battle theme that plays during the fight?
I hope so much he is in the Remake.

I think...geno should be in ssb4, and culex as well (as a boss).
Well...
Don't lose hope, Smash Ultimate is coming and Geno at this rate is very likely appearing! Culex as a boss is more impossible sadly.
maybe they can make boss similar to culex ala onslaught in mvc1
You like mii costumes?
Sad Geno hours.

I like how you used Geno to fight them all with a multi-attack, while Mario focuses on particular enemies in order to lessen the odds. You seemed to eliminate the opposition quicker than usual.

The Lazy Shell was my favorite weapon. Besides the fact that it dealt a lot of damage, it was just so satisfying to kick that damn thing. Am I right?
Thanks for taking me back. Hands down my favorite game ever. ♡
Overhyped game.
That is the most 2007 username I have ever seen
Culex's design reminds me of safer sephiroth
I remember having such a hard time beating this. (Of course i used mallow instead of princess because i liked his specials) I finally beat it by saving up a ton of rock candy. It dealt like 200 or 250 damage to every enemy every time
Rock Candy will save your ass
This fight is so epic that I have no words to describe it, it is one of the best fights of all time, not only in a Mario game, but in the whole world of video games, the incredible secret boss that SquareSoft made of this. Incredible treasure. RPG so epic.
Too bad this overrated fight can easily be cheesed.
@@philithegamer8265 i ain't saying it wasn't easy or is hard to beat him of course is easy ain't a big deal but that doesn't mean that the fight is not epic.

"obscenely overleveled" doesn't really exist in SMRPG.
@@richardstroker6733
I disagree so it must be edgy!
@@ryrin6091 Level 20 is endgame territory. 30 in SMRPG is like Level 75 on a Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy game.
This boss was a bit too hyped up for me, I thought I was doomed but he was actually much easier than I thought.... Not saying he was easy though.
I told my friend to try this game because I love it so much. He saw the trailer and said it looked stupid. I told him that there was a Final Fantasy boss in it. . .he then proceeded to beat the entire game within 48 hours of that conversation. 😂

@teeman9266 That's because this is more of a cameo appearance of a SquareSoft style boss. They collaborated with Nintendo to create this game. Either Culex returns in RPG Remake, or add the final boss from Final Fantasy XVI in it.
An m rated character getting his ass whooped by Mario and gang would be satisfying for me.
That or add Sephiroth. Mario’s revenge for swinging him around from that Smash Bros. trailer.
What exactly does the move "Shredder" do?
Nullify your buffs if I am not mistaken.
I'm here after the RPG remake has been announced.
