Regarding painting outside in the cold...You can get a quality finish / spraypaint down to 3deg celcius.... Keep the frame inside somewhere warm, in front of a heater so the metal itself is warm, and cans in a pot of very warm water - e.g 38deg C. Quickly take the frame outside, spray it, then bring it back inside and hang front of the heater, between each coat. Both the frame and the paint stay warm, so this works well.
Hi Martin, thanks so much for your videos, I am soon to spray my carbon frame and I wondered if you could explain the wet on wet process, I always assumed I would allow each layer to dry before the next. My plan was: sand to carbon -> 2k epoxy primer -> sand -> black base -> sand + mask logo -> kustom canz silver spectracoat -> remove mask + sand -> 2k clear coat -> sand -> 2k clear coat -> polish or rubbing compound Any help much appreciated, particularly on time between coats and when to sand Thanks, Matt
I think he mentions in one of his video's not to sand on colors. As long as you make the primer super smooth by sanding and sand in between 2 layers of clearcoat i think you'll be fine. I once sanded my white color coat and i had some discoloration from the sandpaper (not a cheap one but 3M wetdry paper).
Hello. I've been watching your channel for some time. I like the painting for the klein brand. I had two bikes to rebuild myself. I painted the frames with 2k epoxy primer + 2k acrylic primer + base + 2k finish. It turned out great, everything was applied with a professional spray gun, except for the base. One of the bikes is painted in a chameleon shade. Thanks to your shows, I was able to try out many techniques of varnishing in shades.
FOR THE NEXT VIDEO! First, thanks for the tips! I finally learned what was causing me different problems on the last diy paint jobs I did. I was clueless and thought I was doing everything right but kept getting the same results. My request is tips for gradients made with sprays, specially on sanding them before the transparent layer. Thanks again!
Do you have recommendations regarding a compressor for an amateur setup? You already talked about reasonably priced spray paint guns before, a couple of tips on what to watch for when buying an adequate compressor would be very much appreciated. Cheers!
I have watched SO many of your videos and think they are good and fun!! Its the first time I am spraying a bike using Cans and will use Chromocoat from Kustom Kanz. The Aluminum frame will be acid dipped by a professional. Then I have black base, chromocoat paint and 2k coat. I have ordered a black Trek logo and wasn't sure if its just easier if I apply the sticker on top of the paint once its dry, then add the 2K coat over the top. The other option would be to apply the logos on top of the black base then paint then peel it off then apply the 2k. What do you think ?
Hi, i have a question. Is it advisable to spray clear coat directly onto raw carbon? There will be white primer on some sections which will get colour painted on it, while most parts are left raw. Do i still need to spray clear primer? If i have to, do i need to seperate the clear primer and white primer? Or do i just overlap them? What products do you recommend for the final sanding of the top layer of 2K clear coat? Thank you!
Hey Martin ! Why there is so many grit sandpaper difference for sanding primer before applying paint ? Some people sand 400 hundred, 600, you sand 800... high grit primer sanding works for the paint stick on primer ? Thanks !
Thanks for all the answers, they do help a lot. I've an old steel frame, I'm wet sanding it down. It seems it's harder to get rid of the paint around the welds and other areas. As it's hobby project it takes time. Do you think I can have a problem if I leave the stripped frame in the basement for too long? I'm worried about the oxidization and rust.
hey etoe i like your videos very pro and good attention to details . i saw your videos last time about how to sand a frame but i didnt know how to send the hard to reach spots . AND it would be great if you did a vidoe about how to mix the same color of an old frame like restoration .again really love your work on the paint side and the video editing side hope all the best for you
Hi Martin! When you use vinyl for stencils, how do you keep the edges sharp? when should you remove the stencil? Straight after spraying, or when the paint has cured?
Thank you for your helpful videos! My question is: My base color is dark blue pearl. Should I use a black primer for better basecoat coverage, or will basic gray work as well? Basecoat will be in a SprayMAX can, 1K. Thanks!
Hi Martin, I sprayed already lots, of frames (mainly steel road bike frames) with quite nice results. Recently I got severe problems with an old Eddy merckx frame (color completely stripped) with fully chromed read part. The chrome was originally hidden under paint, and I wanted to do same. I used 2k-primercfrom spray max but I could not get a good adhesion of the color to the chrome. What do you recommend, a good sanding? Cheers from Hamburg, Rainer
Hi Martin, I love how creative you are with your work as well as the finishes. My question to you is are you able to enjoy the designs and creations you make for customers? For part of my job I warp motorsport vehicles and people seem to like my work, but as i am involved in detail from start to finish its hard to see the total transformation. It makes me happy that my finish is good and the customer is pleased but i seem to miss the "wow factor" that other people get. Your videos are fantastic, thank you very much for taking the time to showcase your work !
Hi Martin, I enjoy your videos, makes learning fun! My question is about the air compressor you use for your spray guns. I would like to know what would be your recommendation for a reliable air compressor and what specification to look for? Thank you.
Martin! great work, and thanks for answering questions. I have one when you print your own decals, then you transfer them to waterslide paper with the heat press, are you printing with sublimation inks/toner? Thanks!
Hey Martin, Im a little confused on your aluminium answer. I want to sand or blast my aluminium fame at put on a mat coat, leaving the "raw aluminium" as a finish look. Do I have to worry to much about oxydisation before applying the mat clear coat then using 2K ? Or was it only then using 1K clear coat I had to be carefull of oxidisation ? Thx
Priming question - (your videos are very instructive). I'll be painting a new, raw, carbon frame and I want some sections to show the carbon. Does anyone make a rattle-can clear primer suitable for carbon? Can I prime part with a clear primer and the rest with a 2K black primer? Thanks.
HI Martin, Thanks for the videos and taking time to answer the questions. How does one prepare anodized parts for painting? Do I need to sand them down to the bare metal or just rough up the surface?
Hi Martin, great new format. You know I'm a big fan of your work. Today I'd like to ask a question as well. Do you know of a hammered effect metallic paint that hardens fast and is suitable for bikes? I did my touring bike with hammered paint from Home Depot and it held up well, but it took months to really harden and it was a two months trip to Colombia that really made it hard enough to withstand the normal handling of the bike. The hammered texture is also not exactly the way it looks on the can. I suspect it is because of the thin tubes on the bike. I really love the hammered texture, but haven't found the right paint yet.
What about sanding for a clear coat the color if it's a Pearl or Sparkle color? Is sanding going to disturb the effect? My spec sheet for the paint says to wait 4 hours before applying clear but it doesn't tell me to sand first like the primer I used did.
What are the suggested sandpaper grades for each sanding steps? From start - paint removal - 100-ish? Then after primer and between coats - 800 wet? And finally the polishing part - 2000 wet? Thanks dude!
Why do you always recommend sanding with sand paper and not with steel wool grade 0000? Is something wrong with steel wool? I’m thinking primer of in between clear coat layers.
Hey Marti, great videos!!! I have one question. I'm trying to get a raw aluminum finish on my bike, after stopping the paint and sanding it what should i do? Paint with a matte clear coat or polishing it?? I don't want that super polished look, matte finish would be better
Hi Martin, what do you think about bike rim painting? I painted some rims some time ago but they getting loud when I'm breaking. Do you have any suggestions???
Hey Martin! Thanks for the videos, learning a hell of a lot on your channel! My question is: what is your opinion on the Montana Varnish? I don't have facilities to spray 2K stuff and I don't want to do it on my balcony, so I was wondering if the Montana Varnish is good enough for a final top coat, or should one use it as a seal coat for the paint and then always go for a 2K top coat? My specific use case is motorcycle helmet custom painting. Thank you!
Hi Martin, I am in the process of DIY my Trek carbon fiber road bike. I painted my second coat of 2k epoxy primer and sanded that after a couple of weeks (first coat turned out great after sanding). I noticed that there were some small areas that are showing through the carbon fiber . I used 800 grit for the second coat. 1. Is it ok to paint a third coat of epoxy primer in order to get a solid base? Can you paint too many coats of 2k epoxy primer? Or can I move on and paint the first coat of "Montana Shock White"? (I will be spraying Montana red orange over that) 2. Is is ok to use "Adhesion Promoter" between 2k coats? www.paintdocs.com/docs/webPDF.jsp?SITEID=AUTOESTORE&doctype=PDS&lang=2&prodno=ECP199 Thankyou so much! I would not be able to do this without watching your tutorials! You are the best! Jett
Great work on your channel fun too, at last someone who takes his work seriously but not himself👍Question, is there a decent transparent reflective paint for bike frames, preferably one that works under clear coat? Thanks...
I have no money to create a video. Have to sand frames to gain money. And when I got payed I will spend it with my girlfriend instead of investing it in videos.
@ETOE I wish I lived in your area so that I can send my frame for painting Instead of suffering 30 hours to sand down a frame that it won't turn even 10% as good as you will make it.

Then if we painted the stickers areas with color shifting paint and then painted with clear coat. Wouldn't it? sorry about my english. I hope I coulded explain to what i wanted to do.
Hi, I'll plan do paint a carbon frame same style as, you described. I sprayed already lots of frames with quite nice results, so I think I know what I'm doing. I recommend to ssndcthe frame to bare carbon. Then put the masking stickers on the frame. Then spray the frame black. Then spray the color change. Then remove the masking stickers. Then 1st layer of 2k clear coat, sanding , and finally a 2nd layer clear coat. Et voila! Regards & cross fingers for your paint job.
Martin, in your carbon repair video you use a shrink tape on the outside of the repair to press all the excess epoxy out of the carbon layup. I have looked through Amazon and Ebay trying to find this perforated shrink tape, can you tell me where to get it and maybe a more technical term that I could search for?
Hi Martin, why don't the big manufacturers like giant, specialized, cannondale make beautiful paint jobs like yours instead of bland, boring paint jobs we see every year especially on hi-end mountain and road bikes? Trek has project one but it's very expensive. So why can't the brands do more interesting paint jobs like at more affordable prices.? Thanks!

Hey martin, is it possible to repair a spot where the color and clearcoat got hit by a stone and are gone? Happend to my 2 week old carbon frame on the top tube.

(2) 1 thin layer of paint (sand if cured for 24 hr)
