Hi Martin 😀, what a surprise on a Sunday morning! Thanks for making this video. The bike has been on the road for some great rides by now. It is a (fake) Bianchi. There are a few videos about the rebuilding process on my channel. This one here shows the bike in action: ruclips.net/video/9O4OLX9MAY4/видео.html
That was fun to watch. Painting is 5% applying color, 95% preparation and follow-up. Don't get eager. Don't hurry. The results of patience and diligence are worth it, as Jorg demonstrates.
This was a great review of George’s efforts and in my opinion a very good DIY job. Really enjoy your constructive views of other people’s work and might give this a go next summer on an old bike just for the experience. Thanks 🙏.
hey Martin Great video and way to share best practices on painting! And, I tune in to learn about bike painting and get a bonus lesson on colors and "bugs" behavior!! LOL This is a great way to share these in a positive and non-threatening or condescending way. you're an Artist!!! Thank you for sharing!
When I saw him put the bike frame in the fire pit....I spit my morning coffee and howled! Yet the end result, was a perfectly painted bike frame....but the fire. Holy fucking man! ha ha
😂😂 hi Martin I really love your reaction videos you present them in such a funny way yet still full of useful info, I’m looking at spraying my old kona soon, although I’m super excited about doing it I’m also dreading it at the same time lol 👍🚲
I decided to buy pints of color at the automobile paint store because it's hard to find the exact colors I want in a rattle can, also I can dip a pinstripe brush into some color if I buy a couple of pints. I have a really cheap 25-year-old touchup type of pneumatic spray gun but it sprays very well much better than a spray can nozzle. I like to use an acid etching primer if I can, I sprayed a 1950 Ford with it about 20 years ago I've been spraying acid etching primer on my hobby projects ever since.
I just tried Rattle Can like most people and I'm having problems. The paint took too long to dry and about 2 weeks later the paint started shrinking making cracks after about 2 weeks of drying. I sanded the cracks and the next day I had more. I spent money and time having to start over again. Now I have to buy a paint stripper to take it all off. Automotive paint using a small cheap 10-dollar spray gun is less work and a money saver because I don't have to do it over again. Also, I can't find acid-etching epoxy primer in a spray can just regular sandable acid-etching primer, epoxy primer is a two-part mix, and it gets hard and dry in about 30 minutes. The sandable acid-etching primer peeled off easily with my fingernail a week later, it really wasn't dry like epoxy even after it was sandable.
Acid-etching epoxy primer sticks to anything even shiny chrome, it is really thin and doesn't fill scratches well so if you need to fill scratches you have to use sandable primer on top of the epoxy.
Hi Martin, I love your videos! It was really good to learn about the damage that fire can do to a steel frame which is what leads me to my question. I got a GT bmx off my neighbour after it had been in a house fire, the reason I got it was because I loved the rusted look of the frame afterward and wanted to just clear coat the rust and rebuild it. I thought it would be similar to a patina finish on cars? Now I am thinking this frame is probably no good now? Is there any way to be sure it is unusable and that the fire ruined it? It still seems very solid but I would like to be sure if possible? Just so you have an idea of how bad the fire was, the seat post is welded to the frame now it seems?
I starded a project sanding down a carbon frame and regret is. Im 20 hours in sanding and probably have a other 10 to go. The joints and BB area are a pain in the ass. Fork took 4 hours to perfectly strip to bare carbon but the frame is a pain in the ass.
Any advice for a (brand new) black bicycle frame with a matte finish. I want to make us glossy. I like the glossy look better personally. Not sure if a light super fine wet sanding will suffice and then cover with glossy clear? Cheers!
Hi, what about wet on wet painting? Can it be done after applying primer? How many layers of paint go on the primer then? Do you need to sand the frame before applying clear coat? Do you recommend to send the frame and then apply another layer of clear coat? Thanks.
Everything has to be done wet on wet! Primer, basecolor and clear as well. As many layers as you apply. Yes I recommend to send frames after they are painted.
@@ETOE Thank you Martin for your response. So if I want to avoid sanding after primer porcedure should be as follows? Primer (possibly few layers), then wet on wet colour (possibly few layers), sanding and then layer of clear coat? Thank you
I will give your video the thumbs up Martin 😉👍🏼 do you know some other options to sand blasting? I hear some crazy stuff about crushed nut shells and things like that... cheers Marti till next time!!
So fire is a no go, but what's about metal brush with a drill to remove layers of old paint job on an aluminium frame (before sanding by hand ofcourse) ? Do I enter the hall of shame or am I still respectable ? 😀
This really showcases that you're an excellent lecturer! A question: What are the options for a partial mirror-finish on regular steel? I know decals exist for this, but do any paints that duplicate the look - or alternatively, can any coating or paint be applied over a frame that's either been polished to a mirror shine or chrome-plated?
Makes no sence. Sand the polished areas or remove the chrome first. Painting on chrome is something a pro shoud do because not many colors stick on chrome plated surfaces.
@@ETOE Thank you for the response! The intention was to have some areas painted and others shiny, but it sounds like this is very difficult to get right as DIY.
Martin, Thanks very much for your very good bike painting videos. Do you have experience removing paint from a steel bike frame with products like the 3M Bristle Disk in an angle grinder?
@ETOE Hi Martin... I'm a fan of your work and enjoy watching all of your video's... I have a question... can I use paint remover solution to remove the paint of an aluminum frame?
Thanks, Martin for posting those amazing videos, they are really exceptional and help a lot. I'm trying to custom paint my Cervelo S3 and I am struggling to get decal stickers on eBay Canada! Can you help to get those stickers? Thanks
probably not. the bare carbon is covered by epoxy which was cured at high temperature. this makes it difficult for paint to stick. plus there may be residu of the mould release agent which is needed for the frame to be removed from the mould after its cured. im curious to what martin recommends for the grid of the sandpaper though.
I would use a 2k rust preventing primer like in the description.amzn.to/35xzOpp disclaimer: This comment contains affiliate links, which means that if you click on one of the product links, I’ll receive a small commission. You have no extra cost using these links.
You need an oven big enough to fit a bike frame. People do DIY powder coating, it's popular within custom fishing lure community. Harbor Freight even sells a cheap powder coat kit. But all of them use old kitchen ovens. Obviously a bike frame can't fit into an old kitchen oven...
I have heard people talk about using a heatgun for curing. im not shure if this is going to cure properly or burn the paint becouse of the unstable temperature
Hey martin, today I’m removing paint on my bike using wire brush grinder, because it’s the only tool i got lying around and guess what, i hurt myself, it bounces into my leg I’m planning to use spray can paint all the way because I’m too lazy today, but I have leftover primer, only to realize my spray gun is damaged after used by my friend, damn i got a lot of bad luck today
Yup there are no shortcuts to a proper DIY bike paint job. You could pay for a media blast but they can be costly on top of all paint and supplies you’ll need.

If you sand between layers...can I use 2-propanol to clean and remive the sanding dust? What is recommended?
Fun Fact: The companies Kwasny and Dupli-Color are located in neighbouring villages. Gundelsheim and Haßmersheim (BW).
