    You are the only one that shows that rod in their video!!!!!! That is my problem. I replaced the broken latch, shut the trunk and it won't open. A friend showed me how to reconnect it but, of course he is not here to show me again. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEO!!!!!

    Really well videoed as you can see clearly all the parts, and what goes where. No actuator in my Yaris so it will be trickier to open from the inside. But as I have both a cable and lock issue I can see the parts that should be there and where they all go. Thanks for taking the time to do this BC.

    I completely appreciated the video and all my little glow-in-the-dark handle didn’t open the trunk watching you disconnect that little rod so I did that and now I can use my trunk thank you very much

      @@backyardchevy328 issue resolved based on one of comment in your video, someone said Toyota dealer turned key to opposite direction with full power...and job done in few seconds....I also did same by risking key...but succeeded eventually after one week waiting...thanks

    Thank you! this worked great! Although I do feel like my lock turned when the trunk latch was removed but the key still did not turn it, is that even possible? if so what does that mean, would I still have to replace the lock cylinder? any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

      Thank you..well it has that lever on the end of the lock cylinder at the back and if its slides back far enough that part will turn but the inner mechanism on the lock cylinder will still be stuck in the same (unable to rotate position)

    This truly is helpful, unfortunately the handle on the inside of the trunk is missing. I can see the hole where it's supposed to be, it's just gone. I'll try some trickery with a wire hanger to get the trunk open, but I'm open to suggestions

    I hope I will be able to do it in my Corolla 1998. I started using the 3 keys because I misplace them so they are hanging around my neck. Yesterday, I closed the trunk with who knows which of the 3 keys and it was left horizontally. I said well, tomorrow it will open. It did not after trying the 3 keys and the lever inside. Tomorrow I will try if I can do anything from the rear seats. Tomorrow I will say thank you. 😂

    My key cylinder opens and so does the fob. But it won't open manually from the lever. Any thoughts ?

    I have a 1997 mitsubishi diamante and my back seats dont lead into the trunk and there is also no pull cord. Any ideas on how to open it? The keyhole is the only thing that worked and now its not working anymore

      The inside trunk release button next to drivers seat doesnt work either? If its just the switch thats bad maybe u can do a bypass with a wire to pop the solenoid and open trunk its probably ur best bet to try if no access to trunk and if key doesnt work

    I have the exact same issue on my 2008 Corolla, however my back seat release levers are located in the trunk.....which of course wont open. Any ideas?

      Have u tried removing the lower mounting bolts for the back seat for the part that flips down?

      I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla and had a similar issue. I was able to remove one of the back speakers and then was able to reach one of the release levers.

    Bad luck here! My car back seat (Corolla 1998 LE 1.8L) does not have anything for us to pull, push the seat down and be able to pass thru to the trunk!! What should I do now? I tried my 3 keys and I do not dare to connect the new battery because of the melted negative connector.... so I am trying to be away from power since whenever I get inside the car i smell the chemicals of the fumes I saw 3 weeks ago. Many thanks for your videos. I want to find a way without pulling out more brackets and doing more demolition of my car

      The seat bottom should be able to pull up and out...and itll have a couple bolts attaching the seat back u can remove and maybe thatll give u access to be able to reach in

      @@backyardchevy328 The Bottom seat comes out easily. I do see bolts at the lower end of the 2 backer seats. I wanted to try my arm thru it (as somebody at Fixya was advising) but then I started in the wrong side! In the 60 of the 60/40 side , below, I pulled the side edge cover and discovered the wiring .... I started pulling 1 of 2 and ... now I cannot close the gasoline small door in the side! 🤣Before continuing with my demolition, I will spray silicone in the key hole and later will smack the key with a heavy whatever! I did that with an earlier problem with the ignition key that would not turn to ACC, ON, etc and it did worked. Thank you for your moral support! and heavy video.

      @@backyardchevy328 Well. Today i paid more attention and ... those bolts are really holding the seat belts connections! So, back to square 1. I will ride my bike to purchase a battery connector to replace the melted one. Then i will see if I learn to check the fuses, will also patch the positive wiring with the black electrical tape and then ... I may dare to turn the ignition key with the hood up or I may use the starter relay ( or another one 3,5,?) but the #30 and #87 to avoid/bypass the starter (?)... Do you think I have a plan? Today I put some 3 in 1 oil in the trunk key and i was trying for a long time and I even smacked the key hard twice but nothing happened. I do have the feeling that once I connect the cables to the old battery the trunk may open normally. :-(

      Well i believe those have the release latches in the trunk so u may have to unbolt the bottom of the rear seat back to be able to reach in trunk

      ok I will do that first to get to my trunk but after I open the the trunk will it work if I remove the rod jus like how you did it on your video.

      @@dnutzz5358 yes, it should.. the rod attaches it to the lock and thats whats preventing it from allowing it to move enough to unlatch from the trunk release

    Given that many of these comments are in the last few months, I’m going to guess that the cylinder had a pretty definitive lifespan...
    Either way, great video, and explanation of how you fixed the problem. My Yaris’ got 300k miles on it, I don’t care if I can ever open the trunk from outside the car again or not, so probably not gonna spring for rekeying or repair of the cylinder...
    Anyways, thanks for the assist on an easy fix!!

      Got a new lock cylinder for 58 i believe..then had it rekeyed to the original key..not sure what he paid for that .then i installed it

    What if the trunk wont open, the drivers side lever is broken and the back seats don't fold down?

      Maybe removing the backseat and look for a possible access to reach in and pull the release

      Doing this keeps the inside latch working..it just disconnects the trunk key/lock which keeps it stuck in position..so once the trunk lock is replaced or fixed the rod can be reattached to be able to open it with the trunk key

      @@paulchavez2448 yes still safe..they had it that way for about a month before getting the lock replaced..its safer than how it was with the broken lock

      Sometimes the back seats are easy to remove..the lower seat cushions will just pop upwards..then there will be a couple bolts holding the seat backs where the lower seat cushion were covering..and that may give u access

    I also tried pulling my emergency latch in my trunk but it will not budge, as I start to pull it I see a small cable moving up and down. Do you have any idea how I could fix this?

      Well the latch does pull a cable to disengage it, but if it cant pull far enough it wont release, if u can disconnect the rod from the trunk lock it may be able to allow the travel necessary..if not u can unbolt the latch from the trunk so the trunk will open and youll have a better view of it.

      Are the seats easy to remove..normally the lower seat just has clips and u pull it up and off..then the seat backs will have a couple bolts to remove

      @@decisions139 does it have the cable where that yellow pull handle would be at? Theyre easy to fall off but if the cables still there u should still be able to pop it open

      Is it older than the 2000s? All cars after 2001 i believe have a emergency trunk release..some may have a button or some way to emergency release it

    I pulled the security latch in the trunk. My trunk still won't open. I tried multiple times And the plastic latch broke

      The latch and cable broke? The plastic handle can come off the cable pretty easy..if not using a screwdriver to try and pop open the latch might work

      Just the plastic latch in trunk broke I then tried pulling the cord the latch was attached to with a strong tool wouldn't open it's jammed

      U should be able to access it by popping out the lower seat cushion. And then youll see bolts that retain the seat back from the bottom and it should give u enough movement to be able to work something through there

    My 1997 Toyota Corolla doesn't have the back seat levers outside. A major design flaw, they're inside the freaking trunk. Ughhh

      Yea very much so, u could try unbolting the lower part of the back seat to see if it gives u enough room somehow

      Thats how the one on the video started, it wouldn't turn then the slot tilted to the side on its own, then the pull cable on the inside would feel like it was caught somewhere and wouldnt open...so when i went in through the backseat, even then the emergency release was hard to pull

      I would remove the seat bottoms and remove the bolts that attach the seat backs at the bottom to be able to fold the seat upward enough to reach in

      Oh no..yea thats quite a dilemma..i know u can reach ur arm behind the seat and pull the cable near the latch part, but its hard to find exactly where without being able to see
