    Pre-loading the spring does NOT change the spring rate (the spring rate stays constant - Hooke's law). By pre-loading the spring it means that a greater force is needed to initially compress the spring a set amount, making it appear 'stiffer' compared to the unloaded spring. Nice video all the same. I agree that it's definitely worth saving up and spending a decent amount on better coilovers ¦8¬D

  • @Patrick94GSR
    @Patrick94GSR 7 лет назад +1

    11:55 spring preload does NOT change spring rate whatsoever. Yes it means you have to put more initial load on the spring before the spring starts to compress. But the weight of the car puts far more load on it than whatever preload you put on there. With the car's weight on the springs, the only thing that will change if you move the preload perches is the car's ride height - higher ride height if preload is increased, lower ride height if it's decreased. If you increase preload, and then shorten the shock body the same amount, ride height will be the same but you will have more compression travel, and less droop travel. And vice versa if you decrease preload and increase shock length, ride height remains the same but you will have less compression travel and more droop travel.

  • @RAF71chingachgook
    @RAF71chingachgook 6 лет назад

    OK, the real reason the Fortunes are riding better isn't because they are great shocks, or that the dampening is right, the difference is that the spring rates are high enough to keep the car off the bumpstops. That is why they feel better. The older set of cheap coilovers was letting you hit the bumpstops all the time because the spring rates were too soft for the limited amount of travel. The only reason the Fortune's feel better is that the spring rate is higher and keeping you from slamming into the bumpstops. You've been doing this enough to know that you should get real coilovers with better valving. The answer is always Xida.

    Just some extra info on those spring perches. They don't actually change the spring rates at all. The spring rates are essentially constant on those springs. You do however adjust where in the dampers' stroke the car sits at ride height.

    I have never used Fortune coilovers so I can't comment on them. After many years of autocrossing and owning a '94 Miata since new I have found Bilstein coilovers to be one of the best. The Fortune website says they dyno-tune all of their shocks before shipping them. If so, do they include a dyno sheet? This is very important if you autocross or track the car. The dyno sheet will tell you the performance as well as any differences between the shocks as for as tuning goes. I do like that Fortune uses a monotube shock and Swift springs, which are some of the best springs out there. And price for the set is very reasonable.

  • @ViperDent
    @ViperDent 7 лет назад

    I suggest lifting the coil-overs as high as you can and drive them for a month or so and then lowering them gradually. That way you will get a good feel for which setting is best and they will naturally drop after a while as well.

  • @_Bram

    You could make an extra pair of doors for the offroad Miata without any sheets on it. Just a frame with some bars for protection. And mirrors.

    Recently helped a friend install Fortune Auto 500 Series on his 95 Miata and was very impressed. They're Ohlins quality for 1/2 the cost and hand built to order! Quality is better than pretty much every coilover I've experienced. I want to get them for my 2016 Miata and do a comparison video. Sadly, I'll probably end up doing FM springs over stock Bilsteins because $$$ instead of $$$$ unless Fortune Auto decides to hook me up like they did you?

  • @kingjimmykingjimmy
    @kingjimmykingjimmy 7 лет назад

    I had the sane coilovers. Even though they're softer rates, they're about on par in terms of ride/ performance as Megan ez streets. They did fine for daily and spirted driving. They're a little soft for the track though. I currently have a set of Vmaxx and they're wonderful.
    I think you're Yonaka coils may have been damaged when you had to break free that adjustment knob. But the main thing with these coilovers is that they're aren't valved for a Miata. The shock valving is very generic which adds to the discomforting ride quality.

  • @magnetic0314

    Good vid, one point of misinformation though. Changing preload has no effect on spring rates. Spring rates are static, all that is happening when you add preload is the point at which the spring begins to compress is slightly changed; beyond that point the compression is the same

    Hey Gingium I would get your wheel hubs brushed. All that corrosion makes a gap between the wheel and hub and can actually cause the wheel to come lose while driving and fly off. This has happend at my job a couple of times when lazy employees don't brush them. I know if you get your tires rotated at any discount tire they should brush both the hub and the back of the wheel for any corrosion. (If you wanna make sure it's done right call the discount tire in joilet on Jefferson street and ask for Ryan to do it.)

    13:12 Finally. Correct ride height on Molly. Good job, bro. Absolutely perfect would be the front level with the slightly higher rear. But I wouldn't complain about making the rear completely level with the slightly lower front, either. Just not that zero wheel gap stuff you were working with before. That crapo sucked.

  • @TheJamiedae

    You should have the tires on and the weight of the vehicle on the ground before tightening the coils not a huge deal but in theory the bushing is more stressed since it was torqued with the suspension at its full travel, unless your tires off the ground 🙃 when driving it will spend 99% of the time articulation up and down not just up.

    *not an expert* Just an idea regarding sway bars.. some Miata autocross people run no rear sway bar. It's a quick-n-dirty way of getting the car to rotate around the tighter corners. It's horrible for a daily - my '94 R came with a Racing Beat front and no rear. Reinstalled the OEM rear bar, it's much more stable at speed. Still pretty good out in the cones.

    Where did you get your knowledge of how to work on cars? Did you have someone show you stuff or did you just RUclips stuff? I've always been curious

    From personal experience, hand built does not mean great quality. Most of the time, just that it’s too small of a company to afford a machine (perhaps due to small production runs).
