In this video, I do the initial work on a couple of different types of Holly. Firstly the Japanese holly (ilex crenata) and then an ornamental variegated holly.
Tony, I think everyone likes you because you're a nice, ordinary bloke who makes us feel like your friends. No airs and graces, just showing us what you're doing and why. Thanks for the video, and good luck with your cuttings. 🇦🇺
Cheers mate. I remember the film the mask with Jim Carey. 'nice guy's come last'. Ever since watching that I make sure that from time to time I'm a dick! 🤣
We watch because you’re an ordinary bloke making his way in a pastime we all enjoy doing things we all do, sometimes making things up as you go, again something we all do and hope for the best.
Nice pruning decisions Tony. Yes, I understand that Holly do strike well from cuttings best done when the tree is dormant and cold weather so now would be the ideal time. Thanks for the video. 👍👍
Thanks for your videos Tony. Always interesting and full of personality, wit and enthusiasm. 🙏 And always a pleasure to see some of the crazy bonsai experiments you have on the go. I look forward to watching these develop and grow into the future.
@@TonysBonsai I think you are right. And always willing to poke a bit of good natured fun at some of the pomposity and seriousness in some corners of the hobby ☺️
Anytime - it's all very well watching someone spend 3 hours doing a trim on an 80 year old Bonsai, but for many of us, that's unrealistic. Although, even those Bonsai started as 'sticks in pots'.
A great little video again Tony. That second japanese Holly is going to be a real beauty one day - it looks great now. I have found Holly strikes really easily from cuttings. I am working on a couple of English Holly at the moment...projects for next spring maybe 😉
Cheers mate. I've not got any English holly myself as they seem so sharp. You must be made of tough stuff, but I'll be watching along to see what you do with yours!
Just bought a Japanese Holly from B&Q, so this is pefect timing Tony! Mine is a more mature specimen with a beautiful clump style trunk. Still not expensive. I was having a cup of coffee looking for some tips, before getting stuck in. Thanks again.
Thanks man, just got a Japanese holly a couple mouths ago. He is chillin in a pot, im from us north and he is getting replanted in march... He is in regular soil atm but he got his first feeding today
I am a newbee in Bonsai work, started this year but love what u do and really relax after work watching ur videos. Have a japanese holly my mother wanted to let die, i just couldnt let it. It started putting leaves again. So will see how it does next year. As wrll as ur new ones
I'm curious to see how your cuttings develop. I'm trying to propagate cuttings myself from all possible and impossible trees. Will they root this time of the year? Will they survive? Great pruning decision. Like your style 👍
A man after my own heart! I love taking cuttings, and I've had really good success so far except for Japanese maples and fuji cherry which I just can't seem to get to root. Fingers crossed for your cuttings!
Absolutely enjoy watching your content, some of the others end me to sleep, especially if I'm tired. Have you thought of bonsai-ing a rose? The idea came to me yesterday that I haven't seen one and definitely possible, so why not? Keep growing.xx
Thanks Mandy. I know what you mean. They can be a great cure for insomnia! 🤣 I've never really considered roses, but I might have a go as they are beautiful, but it would definitely be one of the dwarf varieties with the tiny flowers as I'm not keen on huge flowers on a bonsai.
Hi, I fertilise in the summer and autumn using either chicken manure pellets or dried seaweeed which I just spread on the top of the soil and as it is watered it goes down to the roots. Seems to work well for me.
New subscriber, interested in jumping in and picking up some nursery plants to start with. How do you protect your potted plants in winter? Will they survive outdoors? Thanks for your time, and keep up the vids, really like what you’re doing.
Thanks for the sub, and you should definitely jump in and get yourself some plants to start working on. I winter all my plants outside, but up here in northern England we don't really get it too cold. Perhaps if it really gets freezing (below - 5 for an extended period) I will move a few into my garage, but probably not.
i dont care how old i get. "whore moan powder" always makes me chuckle when i hear some one say it haha.. thanks tony always great content.. just got a 2 foot tall ilex crenata on the sale rack 3 gallon pot only 18$us. i cant stay away from the sale racks
Hi Kevin. I'm going to do a video on this in the next couple of weeks, but it is basically, equal parts pine bark, perlite, agricultural grit and compost.
Always a pleasure Tony! Thanks for making videos!
It's my pleasure, and thanks for watching and I always appreciate your interactions and opinions.

Thanks Dan. I knew all those years studying Judo and Jujitsu as a boy would pay dividends in the end!

Nice work Tony! Love the nebari on that Japanese holly! 😍
Cheers Jay, Yeah that is a bit of a beauty, and I'm definitely going to be heading back to pick up another of those for a root over rock.

I hope it went well with the new tree. Sounds like you've picked up a beauty there, and I bet a clump-style Japanese holy will work brilliantly!
So many breads holly looks like one to try cheers
yeah, I didn't realise there were so many types. Does holly grow wild over in Nova Scotia?
@@TonysBonsai There is Winterberry aka Canadian Holly!
@@TonysBonsai haven’t seen any growing wild here I’ll haft to look into that you could get a subscription king 🤴 tattoo congrats

How do you go about fertilizing? What do you use, how often do you use it? Specifically with your own-made Soilmix
