"If you like looking at trees, and you want one in a pot - that's bonsai". Thank you!! I tire quickly of the bonsai snobs that think bonsai must conform to a long set of rules. Most of us want the enjoyment of an interesting plant in an interesting pot.
Happy belated birthday, Steve! I hope you had a relaxing day! What a good trim on that tree. I’m sure it will recover nicely for you and I look forward to future updates on this one.
i got a ilex green mound on the discount sale rack last season. i gave it its first trim a few weeks ago. made a bunch of cuttings to root. its a great species. nursery stock is just easier to find and start with. more affordable too. nice work steve!
I totally agree about nursery stock. There is already enough expense with Bonsai. If cheap material is available and appropriate, then why not?! Thanks Mike.
That birthday Tree came out great Steve! I love the way you opened up that tree. Does this Holly get little red berries? Happy Belated Birthday Steve! Cheers!

Or a cheap pot if you are budget conscious! Thanks for your comments. You and I see eye to eye on this point!
@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai lots of interesting pots are cheap 😁. Eye to eye, indeed

Beautiful job birthday boy!
Thank you!
Happy birthday Steve. I'm sad, that holly is out of my zone, it's a zone 6. I really like it.
Thank you, Mary. I’m in zone 7a, so I guess I’d better protect it over the winter which I can do. Have a wonderful Sunday.

Hi Patricia. I don’t think it gets those berries, but I’ll let you know. Thanks. Cheers!

Thank you for watching!
I do think Japanese hollies do not get enough recognition as ready bonsai material.
At least you and I recognize their potential as Bonsai! Thanks Deep.
