I agree. All governments have failed the armed forces. I also served. However we were not ready as a country in world war two when we declared war on Germany and played for time. We were very lucky then. We must do what we can with what we have if we are pushed and only pushed. The youth of today cannot even get in, they are waiting months, it's a complete joke. When I joined I went in January 1984 for selection and on Monday 27th February 1984,I was in.

I am sure it would not take long to get it....The budget has been increased. A lot of equipment replaced. Hopefully the regiments can get their own recruitment back as well as this is a downfall of being contracted out.
@@emstirling-is4nu there is one factory in the UK that produces small arms ammunition and there was recently a fire there. CAPITA have been dreadful for the Army but it's not their fault there's a recruitment crisis. The Navy have a recruitment crisis and still do their own recruiting. Moreover, the Army has a retention problem which is nothing to do with CAPITA. It takes 6 months to train an infantry soldier, and that's not including the time taken in the application process etc. The UK is in no way ready for war and would take a long time to be in a fit state to do so.
Tks for explaining. I think Capita has to be dissolved...it is mainly on-line process and as far as I gather it takes up to a year after being accepted before the person is given a start date, so most cannot do without a wage so get a job and stay in it. There was also a lot of applicants who did get the medicals and were refused...one was for a condition which after he pursued by 3 specialists, that diagnosis was incorrect....another was refused because of a skin condition pre-puberty which was no longer there. The Navy & Air Forces have gotten better numbers lately so just the Army to get fixed. Was glad to see some of the new equipment - impressive - up-to-date . I just hope that things improve in the near future to make us ready for whatever comes our own way. tks to all who serve...very much appreciated.@@AK-us2di

Vietnam being a great example. US was essentially unchallenged in the air to do whatever it wanted, especially in the south. Rolling Thunder rocked the north for years... But if you don't have the political will to do what needs to be done (ie boots on the ground to capture Hanoi) to win it doesn't matter how many millions of bombs you drop. Can't occupy a street corner with an F-16 or B1...

We will just see more conventional fighting like in Ukraine, Russian people do not have a choice and will be thrown in to the meat grinder but I doubt the USA will have the stomach to have such high casualties giving Russia the edge

Russia has better missiles and air defence than NATO. NATO has better ships and Aircraft than Russia. In a land war Russia is stronger than NATO in a geo strategic war NATO is stronger than Russia.
And the UK does not have a single factory producing explosives for shells according to online reports while little or nothing is being done to replace the equipment given to Ukraine from front line units.

I really don't understand this conversation all over the media. Yes, the RAF shot down some drones etc. that were on their way to Israel, simply to try and temper a wider Middle Eatern conflict, from a very great distance. Ukraine is a different ball game altogether. International air corridors are much narrower and proximity much greater, so leads to either 'mistakes', or the fog of War dragging NATO into a response which would be catastrophic. Yes, NATO needs to deal with Russian aggression, it's been far too long in doing this, but it needs to be planned and effective.

When i joined up in sept 1983, we had 3 full armoured divisions, i based in the UK 2 in Germany in total around 450.000 men/women and thats just the Army. Now we dont have 80.000 and they are panicking...

Even if it involves British planes and pilots.
Russians have special affection for Britain and it' s historically friendly foreign policy toward the Russians even before 1854 and Crimean war.
