The hotel I stayed in Giza had a guide who took me to see the pyramids. Really nice guy, ex-cop, huge guy. He said "just wear an earphone and if people call you, don't even say "no thank you"... just keep walking and you'll be fine ...".
r otaviano Yep. It exists in Turkey too, where most people are also lovely. You learn to “not give face” as they say in Turkish. Don’t engage, don’t even make eye contact with people who just come up randomly calling you “my friend” etc.

I've learned to do that with street beggars in Europe. Works every time. Do NOT even say "no thanks", even if you come off as rude. Of course there's different social situations where you should, such as if you're already in a shop and the worker says "would you like to look at this?" Of course don't ignore, that'd be outright rude. But if you're WALKING on the STREET then it's perfectly normal to pretend not to hear anything.
"50 ways to leave your Lover", the song goes, and in Egypt there are 50 ways to make a new friend. newsflash: they are all 'ex cops' as military duty is mandatory.
Having lived in Egypt for 12 years, and my dad being Egyptian I totally agree with you. It's sad but true and it's nice to see someone like you raising awareness of that.
@@charlesgates2908 it's too hot to cycle here in the summer. The valley of the Kings averages daily 48 degrees Aswan averages 55.... You MIGHT be able to do it in alexandria, but that's still going to be about 35....

Who cares if they are offended? Sorry, but the way you are nose browning, trying to be on the good side with everybody, even with criminals, doesn't make you a better person. It just makes you a liar and a coward.
Even Egyptians get scammed on daily basis ... Unfortunately that's our reality now ... Sorry that you had to witness it and hoping that you will remember Egypt by its kind hearted people .. most of them are ... God bless you Nick
As an Egyptian, I can attest to us being scammed too, almost on a daily basis. From groceries to furniture to almost everything you can imagine, but we obviously are better at evading it than tourists due to shared language and/or experiences. Also it varies from an Egyptian to another, some are better at evading scams than others, that was just my experience.
Jiji M Why you didn't give him the real reason for that situation? It's the F** military regime since 1952, military, magistrates and police families live as kings here, and rest of ppl struggling to survive. Did we give up?! Did we? - NO, NEVER.
Sad that a lot of people are giving this a thumbs down.... some people just want to pretend that everything is perfect and not get real for a moment. But it's important to talk about this stuff. The country where I experienced the most scammers was in Morocco. But with that being said, there were a lot of extremely friendly people there who would want to guide me around or show me things, and they didn't expect any cash in return. Sadly though the scammers make it difficult to determine who is a friend and who just wants your money.
I have come across people who thumbs down not because the didn't like the video. They are thumbs down the way they feel about the subject.. Just a possibility why there are several
he rambled on for 6 minutes being very vague and apologetic for scammers that’s probably the reason for the thumbs down. He could’ve made a ten second video and said “ there are a lot of scumbag scammers in Egypt and if they approach you say no thank you and that’s it bye guys”
I think the thumbs downs, myself included, were because he justified and sympathised with crooks the entire video, and praised them by claiming they were geniuses.
I’m really sorry that you had to go through this here in Egypt, I’m Egyptian myself, i have lived in Egypt my whole life and I’ve never traveled to another country abroad, and what you said is a 100% true, it’s not offensive at all, in fact I’m happy that you’re saying the truth and being honest about all of your experiences
Had to laugh, perfect timing.. Landed in Cairo this morning. Even though I was aware about all that stuff that goes on, Somehow I found my self getting chatted up around Tahrir and ending up drinking tea at his shop. They're so smart. I told him I was just getting breakfast, and then he showed me to a falafel place and said I can eat it at his office (with items costing 300 usd) just because he wanted to give me a business card. ( I knew I landed in his trap) Tried selling me Tours, then paintings. I respectfully declined telling him I'd call if I decide to do one. He then became rude and accusatory saying I'm untrustworthy etc.. and demanded his business card back and kicked me out. I can't believed it happened to me after knowing about it, but also how rude he was. That's not happening again! Only la shukran from now on. The rest of the day was amazing walking around. Sensory overload.
damn 😂😂😂😂😂😂 lf u visited Kafer El shikh its a really normal place but beatiful and also cheap 😂😂😂😂 for example the lemon hooka (shisha) cost 1 dollar at maximum price and that if you was at a luxury cafe
I run small group tours to Egypt every October and I can confirm that the worst part about Egypt is the constant hassling and the scams that come along with it. You mention that it's because of Egyptians needing to feed their families and how this is been getting worse since the revolution but to be honest it hasn't changed at all. I was in Egypt a year prior to the revolution and it was exactly the same. Now, I'm not saying that the situation/economy isn't worse now than it was before but what I will tell you is that absolutely nothing has changed when it comes to the hassles/scams that go down there. Traveling to Egypt independently can be incredibly frustrating which is why I decided to start running group tours there. Anyway, great job on all the videos. I've been watching closely. You've really represented what Egypt is all about. It's an incredible country with so much to see and do and despite the issues there, it remains to be one of my favorite countries in the world. -- Ryan
I am Egyptian and I agree with you but us don't like to be that, the Egyptian army have all Egypt and they had beaten the revolution because tramp support sisi .
sad but true, it is a mentality that affects every transaction even for the locals. simply, if you are not 100% familiar with the market you are dealing in you will get scammed. say you are a first time car buyer or shopping for a musical instrument or any sort of spare parts or any other purchase you make only once or rarely, you HAVE to find an acquaintance that is an insider to that market and enlist their help or you are sure to get scammed. And everyone is a fair game, some even scam their family members :) it is a deeply rooted, widespread vulture-like mentality and i am not sure it is a result of hardship because it is there regardless of the conditions and there are enough honest people who have it hard as well.
Pause The Moment what I like in your comment I said at the end it is one of your favourite countries in the world we appreciate that and welcome to Egypt any time and Egypt will become better thanks
Sorry for inconvenience but to enjoy your time in Egypt take a local guide with you along the journey and for transportation now you can use some good applications now like UBER or KAREEM .as it's with fixed price. But Generally Egypt is a wonderful country that deserves to be visited.
Thanks for this video mate. I've been travelling around Egypt for the past couple of weeks and I've tried to enjoy myself here but its very very tough at times,....the harassment is real and just so constant. I've travelled to countries far poorer than Egypt and yeah, people haggle for tourist dollars,....but not like here. Tips for others: *You will get sick of the words "TAXI" "TIPS" "WHERE ARE YOU FROM". *Say NO to everyone and anyone who approaches or talks to you in the street and keep walking, they are all scumbags. The good Egyptians will never harass people in the street. *Inside tourist attractions the constant harassment for tips/camel rides/souvenirs is insanely aggressive, beware. *Never let anyone know you have foreign currency, just stick to a fair tip in Egyptian currency. *Disgraceful security guards will happily let tourists walk all over ancient ruins for "tips", don't fall for it and don't wreck the ruins. *Even some hostel/hotel owners will try and scam you into personal tours claiming to show you "the real Egypt" then proceed to rip you off at every turn or walk you into a souvenir shop. *Negotiate a price for everything before you even think of doing it. (food, taxis, tours, everything!) * Use Uber instead of the constant battle with taxis. *Always ask for a menu even if its Arabic and learn some Arabic numbers because you will always always always be overcharged. *Always check the change you have been given. *Never hand over an entrance ticket or a train/bus ticket, ALWAYS wait for them to inspect and hand it back. I guess the only positive is that I haven't seen or heard about any violent crime or muggings,....Egypt is just scam central.
An Egyptian trader/Person will literally warn you of being scammed then goes ahead to Scam you right there and then. I've never seen something like that my entire Life!
I think it's an attempt to get them to trust you... Like, a scammer wouldn't tell you to be careful.... Try to build up a rapor with you.... I still trust very few people here. Its how I can afford to eat and pay my bills every month
I just came back from Egypt and I agree with everything you said. Most of the people are very nice and warm but bumping into scammers is practically unavoidable. The good thing is that the payoff (the attractions) is so awesome that it balances the experience. I think the key to having a good experience in Egypt is to explore the areas that are not touristy, eat at local places, so you meet people whose livelihood doesn't depend on getting money from tourists. They are the ones who wil make you fall in love with the country.
As always what you are saying is 100% truthful and I hope no Egyptians take great offense to what your saying. Reality is reality and unfortunately for Egypt they have become very reliant over the years on tourist dollars and honestly I can't even imagine how it is right now. I visited Egypt (and loved it by the way) prior to the revolution, I went with a guided tour group which at times insulated us from scams but I never experienced the level of hustling that I came across going to various sites throughout Egypt so I can only imagine how it is now that millions are not flocking to the country. Like you I don't blame the Egyptian people for this and I totally understand the situation many find themselves in but yeah tourists need to have thick skin when traveling through Egypt because if you look like a tourist (which I don't) your going to be constantly harassed and it will be difficult to determine who is actually just being friendly and who is trying to scam you/get you to buy something you more than likely don't want.
Best advice I got before traveling to Egypt years ago (1998) - NEVER partake of any activity (including setting even a foot inside a taxi) until you arrive at a pre-arranged price. And expect to bargain hard. Personal experience - on my traveling companion's bucket list was to ride a camel at the pyramids. Although I had passed on the previous nugget of information to him, while I was wandering around taking photos and he wandered elsewhere, apparently one of the scammers talked him into camel rides for both of us. The next thing I know, here he comes jogging past me on his camel, swathed in Arab gear from head to toe, with another guy dressed in full Bedouin garb, followed by another camel ridden by it's presumed owner, who proceeded to scoop me up onto the camel with him, wrap a headdress around my head, and off we went, trotting rapidly around the pyramids (this was at Gizeh, just at the outskirts of Cairo). After about a 15-20 minute ride, (and me shrieking in his ear for half of it to let me down, dammit), we were both deposited back on the sands, and I wandered off in a bit of a daze. My companion comes running up to me with a desperate look on his face and says "I don't know what to do, he wants a hundred dollars (EACH!) for the ride!" I just started laughing, but my friend looked a bit terrified, apparently the guy was getting a bit belligerent about the fare. I asked my friend if he had pre-arranged a price and the guy was now trying to strong-arm him into paying this exorbitant amount. Nope. He admitted he hadn't fixed a price before climbing on his camel. Yeesh, lol. So I go over to the guy, who looks extremely intimidating and immediately starts shouting at me that we owe him $200. I shouted back at him (seemed to be the lingua franca of the deal at that point) who the heck did he think we were and how dumb did we look and hell no we were not giving him $200, we didn't even HAVE $200. He and I roared at each other for a few minutes and eventually arrived at $40 for both, which brought us in at around $20.00 per ride and we paid up. The cab driver on the ride home was shocked when we told him how much we paid, he said the going rate was about $7, but we considered the difference tuition and made sure not to make any similar mistakes again. I still have pictures of my friend on his camel, dressed in his finery. Makes me smile every time, so well worth the added expense. Hah, 20 years later, it's kind of nice to know some things don't change. Yeah. It's definitely a 'buyer beware' situation in Egypt, lol.
Invisible discounts my dear... He wanted 40 from the beginning. If he said 40 at the start you would have said no thats too much. This is how the world works from Amazon to the camels in Cairo 😉
That started to happen to me during my time there in 1989. The camel is laying down, the guy asks if I want to sit on his back for a photo. 25 piasters! I hand him my camera and jump up. Next thing I know, the camel stands up! So I'm up there yelling to get down. What do you know! 5 pounds to get off! Lucky for me, my EGYPTIAN HUSBAND comes walking up yelling in Arabic and the guy gets me off quick! Fortunately, I spent most of the three months there in Alexandria, the jewel of the Mediterranean....
Exact same thing happened to my brother. He was asked if he wanted to take picture with camel and as soon as he sits on it, the owner whipped the camel. He had to pay for 15 minutes of camel ride. :))

yeah once i was in Egypt and i wanted to buy the water from kiosk and it costs like 1,5 egyptian pounds. And the seller was like it’s 15 pounds !!! and i was like no thanks and he said okay and showed with gesture to go away. And at other kiosk they sold me water for 1,5 pounds. But it was kinda bad experience. I love Egypt a lot but scammers really suck
Yeah. Unfortunately the only way to not get scammed is if you already know the pricing and know how to deal with these people. I honestly feel sorry for foreigners going to Egypt because i know how easy of a target they are for scammers. It is sad.
as an egyptian i recommend that if you're going to travel alone or with some friends to get an egyptian friend before going to egypt that way we can show you the places where we stay not the fancy touristy places and you would be able to walk down the street without getting scammed.

I live in Cairo, this video is completely 100%. Egyptians are mostly lovely but the scammers have no guilt or remorse. It comes across that they are hungry for money so will scam anyone. Thankfully I know what they are up to and argue nicely that i am not paying the price lol. You have to play their game or walk away. Just say no thanks and walk. If you don't u could be still in the shop for 3 hours talking. Be VERY ASSERTIVE.
Scammers yeah thats everyehere in Mexico scammers at every corner one time me and my wife were in xochimilco floatings gardens did crack offered to feed us some mole/xhicken he charge me 60 dollars for something i could have paid 12 dollars at a restuarant got screwed
Great video. I spent a month in Egypt travelling around and for the most part people are extremely friendly and welcoming. However, certain people are definitely scammers, especially in Luxor. In less touristy parts of Egypt you will not find many scammers
Exactly , Only Cities With Scammers Are The Ones That Have Tourists No Scammers In The Other Cities , Also Locals Arent Scammers They Are Kinda Friendly.
You're proud of what? we should not be proud of this. This is so embarrassing, if your parents did ever tell you that you should be proud of this, then you're family probably lying to you.
Not that Ancient Egypt was perfect. Ancient Egypt was advanced compared to other countries in those times, now it is behind, but thievery, crime, illiteracy existed also in Ancient Egypt
The few bad apples ruin it for everyone. Most people in that region are very kind and hospitable. But once you get scammed, you suspect everyone is out to get you, so you may treat them harshly.
I'm from NYC, thought I was scavy and street smart being from there. Also I've traveled to many countries over the last 15 years. Yet I was scammed in Cairo. Never thought it would happen to me. Met a man who said he worked at the museum, one thing lead to another. Next thing I knew I was in a shady shop in a room with fake oils that I bought for 200 US dollars. It all happened so fast. This happened in 2013 and I'm still trying to figure out what the hell happened, considering I'm a huge minimalist. lol
The only way you will survive in this country is to trust no one. Work out your entire trip... Tickets can be bought at the tourist attractions. Yet people will literally jump in front of cars and tell you "you must buy ticket from me, no tickets up there, they ran out, they close now but with my ticket no close.... Only 150 more..... Trust no one. Always careem and Uber, especially in Cairo.... I can't stress it enough.
You not street smart because you from NYC fool. You're street smart because you in the streets, dummy. how the fuck do you call an area bad, when you're literally the idiot in the story? did someone pull a knife out on you? a gun? were people trying to rob you? In bad places, people physically take your shit, they don't ask you for something and wait for you to give it to them.

@@RonBurgundyTime Exactly, this sounds more like getting over charged for an item or service... especially when you have the power to haggle or say no.
He got ripped off but instead kept moaning and bitching about Egypt being full of scammers. Shame to see anyone getting overcharged whether an Egyptian like me (it happens to us too) or foreigners like him and I wish that I could help them, and I'm looking for recommendations but to equate scams with ripoffs is completely disingenuous IMO.

Dan Vaught - I will say this - I use to consider getting *legally* overcharged for taxis to be a 'scam'. I use to hate eastern european taxi drivers for that. But now I get they're just trying to make more money...and so as long as they honor the *agreed upon* price then thats ok to me. Because its MY RESPONSIBILITY to haggle/negotiate. If I dont because Im too tired or something then thats ON ME. If the price is higher than agreed upon or they rig the taxi meter then thats totally different! But thats not most situations.
it works fine in big cities. I doubt you will be able to get an UBER from the airport tho. The government somehow doesn't allow uber drivers unless they're very discreet to pick people from Cairo airport. (This was until the last time I was in Egypt a few months ago. I couldn't take an UBER from the airport but was able to get an UBER back to the airport when leaving Egypt but the driver instructed me to not tell any of the security people at the airport that he's an UBER driver)
I absolutely hated Egypt when I was there. By far my worst travel experience. I was hassled absolutely non stop while I was there. We could not take 10 steps out of our hotel without someone trying to scam us. Even the tourist sites you pay to go into are full of scammers. The workers at the temples and sites will try to get you to pay them to guide you around or say you can take pictures if you will pay them. Do not do it or they will never leave you alone. I ended up missing parts of Luxor temple because i could just not handle the harassment anymore. On top of this if you are Caucasian everyone will want their picture with you, or be taking pictures of you. It really wore on me after a while especially when this one group made us wear hats and hold flags and took like 20 pictures. After that I began telling everyone no. Even though I was as careful as I could be about food and water in Egypt I somehow still ended up with food poisoning. Needless to say throwing up on the sidewalk of Valley of the Kings and then being surrounded by people saying they wanted to help me but then trying to scam me is not a travel highlight. Egypt is also very very dirty. It is putrid. And the heat makes everything worse because it draws out the stench. The streets leading up to the pyramids looked like a warzone. It was like this everywhere. I just never really felt safe in Egypt, especially as a woman. I feel safer in New York City in the middle of the night than Cairo or Luxor in broad daylight. While the sights of Ancient Egypt were breathtakingly incredible, the modern day Egyptians need to learn how to treat tourists if they want the tourism to pick up. I will not be returing and would only recommend it to a seasoned traveler who is 100% aware of what they are getting into.
As a Canadian man who has been to Egypt over 25 times in his life (my father is Egyptian and 95% of his family still lives there) I can tell you that when people go to Egypt they either loved it or hated it. You are clearly in the latter group. That being said, your response shows that you're missing many things, and need to understand some core things. 1...the vast majority of Egyptians, about 80% or more, live on less than $1 a day. So they are aggressive and persistent in their approach with tourists because they are quite literally broke, starving and/or need to support their families. So try to understand that they are as aggressive as they are because they NEED TO BE to survive. They don't care for your comfort when they're trying to survive. You wouldn't either if you were in their shoes. So don’t take it so personal. 2....as far as the cleanliness of the country, that issue is 3 fold. First off, Egypt is VERY populated at 100 million people...let me say that again, ONE HUNDRED MILLION. Cairo alone has over 20 million. Cairo is 600 square kms. That's over 30,000 people for every...square...kilometer!! You think keeping things clean with that many people is easy?! Secondly, Egypt is struggling economically, and to make matter worse the government does not divert the necessary funds needed to keep the country clean - they divert it into their pockets. With that many people in the country, ignoring the trash issue even temporarily becomes HUGE issue in no time. Thirdly, remember, you're in Africa. It doesn't rain often. Less than 70mm a YEARRR. Rain does keep environments clean. Without it, you got a problem. So as for your hating on Egypt's cleanliness, there's 3 good reasons why. 3...about your food poisoning, you were obviously not as careful as you claim to have been. You did SOMETHING wrong. Did you drink ONLY bottled water from reputable non-shady retailers? Did you do the same for your food? I don't think so. But let's say you really were super careful. Egypt, like you said, is very hot. The heat alone can make someone sick and throw up if it's not something you're used to or can handle. 4...Your safety. I told you earlier why you were targeted. Egyptian are desperate to survive. Secondly (and yes, i'm gonna go there) you likely dressed inappropriately given societal dress norms. A white girl showing some skin walking around in short shorts and a tank top will attract attention. They're not used to that out there, so when they see you dressed like that you stick out like a sore thumb and send the wrong message. It's a pipe dream for countless Egyptian men to sleep with a white foreigner, especially Americans. When you're a woman visiting a foreign country try to respect their clothing norms. Something tells me you didn't. Plus, having a local yet reputable guide would be a good move in any country, especially Egypt. So there you have it. Had you engaged a little more common sense and perhaps done better research to know what to expect beforehand, you would've had a much better time and not let some street garbage and desperate/hungry Egyptians ruin your trip. If not you'll be unjustly red-flagging countries you might visit over your lifetime for over dramatic reasons.
@@EtoTheKay although there were some good tips and sensibility in your reply, I found you patronising. How do you know that she wasn't dressed to the local standards? I understand your point about the poverty and cleanliness and that one cannot expect that from Egypt given the natural condition and overpopulation but I would hate to feel like a prey because that's men's dream to sleep with a white woman.
@@h.a.s.42 : SINCE WHEN??? BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU POST...YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO INCITE ANY FEELINGS OF "SUPREMACY" IN THIS GROUP BECAUSE IT COULD LEAD TO PROBLEMS. THEN THEY GET ATTACKED FOR BEING "WHITE SUPREMACIST" WHEN THE ROOT OF SUCH ALLEGATIONS STARTS WITH PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND HOW YOU THINK.
"Some people got scammed to drive around Cairo for one day for like $300"/ This is definitely not a scam, this might have been a rip off but a scam hell no. If these people agreed beforehand to the fees, there was actually nothing wrong with it at all. If I offered to drive you around Alex for one day for $500 and you accepted my offer, you can't go and scream that my rates weren't competitive or way above market rates, that's ridiculous and silly to say. This is not how people do business anywhere.
Went to Egypt in 2010, Cairo visit was ruined by harassers and scammers. At one point, 2 Egyptians started arguing in Arabic. Then a passer-by told us that they were fighting about who can scam the most money out of us. Truly shocking and puts many people off visiting such a historic country.
300$ for taking taxi over Cairo why? they didn't hear of uber or careem i think uber is international company and everyone knows and there is no chance for scamming when u ride uber
Lamiaa morgan them hearing about uber or careem is not the point, is it? The point is that the truth that alot of Regular Taxi drivers (which supposedly work and should follow the laws) are scamming people and they are doing that and the Egyptian government isn't doing anything about these people. In fact, from what i heard, uber and careem will not be working in Egypt anymore. Only because the country allow for such atrocities to be done against citizens and tourists.
Actually they are still working and am not talking about the whole video am talking about this point cause the only reason will make pay 300$ for a driver that if he is taking me to the moon we pay 300$ to fly for a country to another by plan how logic is it to pay for taxi driver it was obvious he was scamming on them and im suggesting uber an cream to solve this issue .
Lamiaa morgan i get what you are saying and obviously the person know if they are getting scammed but when yoi are in a situation like this, you only get told about the price after the trip and tbh, personally, i wouldn't feel safe getting into an argument about money with some drivers in Egypt. Especially as a woman. And for uber, maybe it is still working but i guess maybe it won't in the future. It was a recent court order about suspension for it. Don't know when it will take effect www.reuters.com/article/us-egypt-uber/egypt-court-orders-suspension-of-uber-careem-services-in-victory-for-taxis-sources-idUSKBN1GW1O2
Even after court decision they r still working and am using it btw until now 2nd if ur stranger and u will take a ride around cairo not just going to spasifc place u will aske how much it will cost 1st in case u dont know and this taxi driver doesnt using a way to measure the road u will go with option one which is more save use UBER
People need to do research before the travel we used uber in Cairo dirt cheap. Read up all about it on trip advisor and other sits before going. The old saying a fool and their money are easily parted.
Are we not going to talk about all the extreme sexual harassment woman are going thru, especially tourists? Visiting Egypt is for sure one of the most dangerous things I'w done and the trauma I suffer has made it impossible for me to travel anymore out of fear.
Exactly the same thing happened to me in Morocco. In fact it was one of the worst experiences in my life i ever had. They steel your money before your very eyes and then they humiliate you. Very dehumanising. Its not an Egyptian thing, its an Arab thing. Has nothing to do with the negative after-effect of Egyptian revolution like you said in your video. Its sadly one part of the Arab culture.
scaming and staff like that is just a result of bad government. and any country could suffer from it. because bad people are everywhere. so why to plame our culture. we have clean culture.

A man took a picture of myself and my fiancé with my own camera...then demanded 50 dollars. We then headed to the pyramids and we’re surrounded by 3 men in camels. They continued to circle us until we were forced back onto the tour bus. Women were coming out of their homes and dumping bags of rubbish into the Nile in Cairo. It was really the holiday from hell. I was crying to get home.
I was just saying advice about it for someone was asking about Egypt and camels trips Yea special pyramids is most scam place in Egypt even for Egyptian themselves But Egypt is really beautiful as country if u get away of scams Have different things and different cites and activities
Egypt was very special and nice to me, but yeah, many people arrive me and ask me for money with no dignity, in Luxor I remember a guy who just move like 10 cm my bag and he ask me for money just for that
@LIVING THE DREΔM It's the F** military regime since 1952, military, magistrates and police families live as kings here, and rest of ppl struggling to survive.
I can say when i went to Turkey it was very simular. It started the second we landed. You pay a £10 visa entry fee and get your stamp then on your way. I was already forewarned that you need to make sure you have correct money. To pay with a ten pound note. So making sure there was two seperate tenners in my passport for me and my friend to then be adked for another tenner! When i explained there was £20 in my passport for us he went on to say 10 per passport. What could i do? Holding up the queue and passport control refusing to let us in unless we paid. The first night out our group of 13 adults hit the bars and split into two groups. I found my friend outside the club with a clear footprint boot mark on his face and he was spark out. I helped him sit up he had been robbed/pickpocket in the club and was asking for help to find the doorman had beaten him. My days it was scary. We tried to speak with the owners and we were all told to leave and cars with more turkish locals began arriving racking their numbers up. For our own safety we split up again and made our way back to the hotel in opposite directions so they wouldnt pin point us. The men lack respect for the women so when on holiday let YOUR MAN do the talking. Good tips though for people travelling and a chance for me to share my experience as it can be officials aa well as club staff that can ROB you be aware. I really wana go Egypt. 😆
I think scammers are in everywhere not just in Egypt and as an Egyptian, I assure you that more than 95% of Egyptians are most welcomed and kind-hearted people, welcome to Egypt.
In Hurghada there was this souvenir shop, bazar area and I was there with my gf. That time of the day there was no other foreigners than us. This one man walks to us and starts talking with us. Same way as you explained, he knew some finnish words like Moro (hey) Nokia etc. He got our attention and we asked him directions to the Al Mina Mosque, he took us to 2 diff mosques (they were close by so we walked) and neither of them were Al Mina. So we were like f this lets get taxi and go to a big shopping mall we knew. He actually stopped a taxi for us and "of course" the taxi driver didnt speak english so we woule need the scammer guy. That Scammer wanted to take us there, join us in the taxi. Then we were just like ok hes scammer ( realized it earlier because he lied about the mosques but he took us near to busy street with lot of taxis so we continued with him :D )lets leave and it was quite difficult to leave the situation. And immediately we got out of the situation, another guy came to us explaining how hes been to EU and hes good guy blah blah. And also at the bazaar area many asked "where are you from?" Then I said Finland but if i didnt go to their shop they were like "Finnish people dont respect Egyptian people."
@@bobbyokeefe4285 Not hoping to offend but it's not racist to point out a real problem or share a bad experience you went through. It's clear he still loves our country and his story is valid.
Worse than Romania? Taxi drivers were foaming at the mouth looking at me walking out of the train station with a suitcase and guitar. The guy I picked wanted like $20 USD to drive me 10 blocks. I put my life on the line in a back alley when he dropped me off to tell him that wasn't going to fly. He goes, "Not so much money..."

I have been to Sharm El Sheikh 7 times and all of the times it has been amazing the locals are welcoming to tourists. However I totally agree with the scams its everywhere people are trying to sell fake items such as watches for cheap and they are fake. Overall I think its a nice place especially the brilliant weather.
Were scammers the only thing to be aware of and the only bad part of Egypt? How did you 'live' through the insane amount of stray cats and dogs? I've seen them on a lot of your videos and many are really hungry/sick looking... :(
well when the people are trying their best to survive through the harsh but neccessary economic reform you dont really expect them to care for cats and dogs right? i mean tell......... me feed your son or feed your dog?
naba hrhhr ..... You completely missed my point. I didn't say anything about Egyptian people being bad or something for not taking care of the animals right? I completely understand the reasons why those animals are there. I am just aware of that it might be hard to see for someone who isn't used to it..... that's all.
naba hrhhr All okay...😉 Yeah in general I'd be all about animals and all... But I understand their economic situation and why this thing with animals on streets is as it is... Still I do believe for many it'd be hard to see. Probably gotta just keep in mind that this is just how it is there and you can't help it whatsoever. Focus on positive things in Egypt 🤗
the thing is stray cats and dogs in egypt dont do anything to unless you provoke them people just walk by them all the time and it rarely happens if a dog bites or a cat scratch you
Scammers really are a huge problem in Egypt! I'm ready to tip more than the average Egyptian would and haggle down prices for objects to an amount that is still more than an Egyptian would manage. When I go to Egypt it's for a vacation, I have a budget that is much higher than the budget the average Egyptian has to live during this period of time and I'm happy to spend and encourage honest people. But so many go beyond this honest way of making a living from tourism. And as a visitor I feel I always need to have my guard WAY up and can't be as open and friendly because who knows if I'm just being set up to be scammed...
My husband is Egyptian, and it's true you do have to watch out just like anywhere else for scammers. Heck, I'm from Florida, and we are the number one tourist destination in the US, and there is tons of scammers here. I hate it when I see what we call tourist trap areas. Florida is great, and it's beautiful, but also tourists have to be careful here, because scam artists are just looking for any opportunity to get people out of their money.
I am Egyptian and spread in the street, and for the first time I know about the method of this monument, oh man, I make sure that you are good enough because you are spreading a certain experience to a large country like Egypt with a large population. Therefore, our Lord, he caused you to fall into bad people, nothing more
In 2017 I flew home to Aus for 12 days on my arrival at Cairo airport I was pulled aside and basically told that I had to pay $250 USD otherwise the officer wouldnt let me through passport control unless I paid I basically turned around and said to this guy that I love in Egypt and my father in law is waiting for me outside and two my kids are waiting for me to go home and their father in oz working long story short I knew my rights and spoke in Arabic to get my point across basically I ended up giving the guy 10 EGP he wasn't happy but he's lucky he got that from me 😂 awesome video Nick and as always safe travels ♥
I was followed down a block by a guy after leaving Cairo airport trying to get me to go into his cab, even though I could see the hotel I was staying in. It was my first foray in Egypt. Still loved the country and people and can't wait to go back. I just did extensive research to know what to expect before I arrived.
Unfortunately that’s true even for Arabs tourists, they get scammed all the time especially if it’s your first time visiting Egypt. Piece of an advice plus what you have said, don’t deal with out airport guys offering rides or anything + stay in a well respected hotels + Use Uber. That would minimize the scams hahaha have a nice trip tho :)
As someone who travelled to Egypt Pre-revolution and post-revolution, multiple times, YOU ARE SPOT ON when you say its the revolution/political problems post-mubarak that created the HUGE INCREASE in scams........ I remember pre-revolution everything was soooo cheap, it was so calm, we were not scammed or bothered by street hustlers much. Years later I travel post-revolution, EVERYTHING has changed, the apartment building I used to stay in on the nile like quadrupled in rent and was fully booked for some reason. The price of taxis and food and EVERYTHING went up, and corruption and scamming were through the roof, I noticed the taxi drivers and many people I dealt with tried scamming and overcharging cuz they knew I wasnt a local (Even though I speak arabic and come off as a jordanian). But things changed sooo much post-revolution, but I noticed the increase in scamming was part of it. its crazy
I wish I watched this video before I went to Egypt . I speak Arabic and I knew most of the are scammers but I still fell in to the trap. Thank you for being honest , people need to know the good and the bad before they go to any country .
don`t feel bad about it even we the egyptians go in it every now and then we had a guy who used the real wall street wolf and convinced him to come to egypt to give a lecture in the cairo stadium and sold allot of ticket and he took the money and vanished the guy is a monster he defeated the master and i read it once on social media 2 years or more ago but i`m not sure if true or not that we had a guy who joined isis and they made him a head of a city or village something like that and he collected 2 million $ zakat which is an islamic taxes that only goes on musilms and he took the money and also vanished so you are not alone in this we defeated the masters of the game
to be honest Ahmed this is all over the Arab countries , similar situations happened to my family. We were desperate to leave Iraq when we got to Syria we had a lady telling us that she will arrange for us to immigrate to USA legally . After knowing her for 5 months we blindly trusted her and she took $50000 to arrange the papers for 6 of us and then she told us we are leaving in one week we have to sell out belongings so we gave it to her to sell . Next morning she texted us “ thank you for the reward “ and she vanished . It’s sad but that’s reality in every disrupted, chaotic and economically fallen country .
Thank you for a well intentioned video , I am Egyptian and confess to the bad things some of my fellow countrymen get up to with Tourists . Its bad for Tourism , and threatens one of our main hard currency income beside the Suez Canal and Oil . The Government should try and do more to protect Tourists and punish the scammers .
When I was in Egypt I got scammed. They were so friendly and chatty and said they didn't want to sell you anything. But just make some tea. I didn't want to offend so I accepted. They tried to sell things at an extremely expensive rate when you sat down. I tried the whole bartering down but they got aggressive with me. In different parts of Egypt was the same. The sad thing is then I put up a wall and dont buy anything. I've sat with genuine vendors who are honest and try to sell and tell me of their struggles since the revolution. My heart melts for them. But the country really need to get it's act together on how they treat tourists in general. I love and hate Egypt. And thats sad as it's a beautiful country with so much to offer and so much potential
On behalf of all good Egyptians, I am really very sorry for that bad experience you got here in Egypt. Your fingers are not the same, I wish you the best the next time.
i am egyptian and lived in egypt most of my life. totally agree with you and i like your videos on egypt. keep it up and dont bother about negative thumps.
In egypt if something is for 2$ dollars they will make it 200 $dollars. I understand when they want to profit a little for their sale, but common they sky rocket the prices! I hated egypt exactly for that, the people are very dishonest and try to rip you off as much as they can.
Was in Cairo years ago . Yes its dangerous and aggressive you seriously need to know where and what you are about . Worse thing was been expected to ride emaciated horses around the pyramids . These unfortunate animals were starving and their rib cages protruding and shoulder blades bleeding as a result of bones sticking out . This completely maddened me . I would Never go there again as it's basically a nightmare on steroids
Egyptian here! born and raised What he's saying is completely true. We, Egyptians ourselves, are on the lookout for scammers in our daily interactions. Not only in shops or tourist attractions, but also in every aspect of life, literally. It's SAD. For tourists, the best way to avoid scams - or at least minimize the damage - is to communicate with locals online before coming here. Egyptians in general are very welcoming and would be happy and excited to help a tourist. And when you come here, many would be willing to show you around or have a conversation with you on their days off. Couchsurfing.com is a good platform to find locals and interact with them. Good luck people. Don't come here!
I went to Hurghada last year on holiday, and whilst there we did a day trip to Luxor. Whilst we were in Luxor, an older Egyptian man tried to sell me a plaster-cast cat statue, claiming it was alabaster stone. He asked for 400 Egyptian Pounds. I responded “20?” (£1 Sterling) and he accepted. It now sits proudly on my desk in front of me 😂 I love Egypt by the way, been 6 times and would happily go again ❤️
@@mostafafawzemahmoud8251 our experiences that we have had would 100% agree with your statement. Egyptian people are so kind and considerate, and what we have been led to believe is that this is the Egyptian culture - to be kind and generous and good people ❤️
That happens everywhere even in Europe if you are a tourist. especially cab drivers. Plus it's normal in some African countries. senegal is worse in scams.
~A Message from an Egyptian I can't express how right you are ... coming from a local Egyptian citizen it embarrasses me that we have such a problem. It could make or break someone's trip!🌎💚 And I just can't imagine someone being followed by a person and being forced into buying things they don't want! It seriously breaks my heart because I grew up learning how important it is to keep my countries values and such things give a bad impression of us and I know we are not like that! Nevertheless I am telling everyone to be careful! "Every rose has it's thornes"💟 and Egypt has a dark side too (that I in no way love or glorify i actually wish i could vanish once and for all!) Because no one has to deal with these things and I trully know how beautiful traveling is and how easily impacted you are by the little things in the county and the little actions of the people... So I sincerely apologize if you are someone who came to this video from a bad experience (We are not all like that I promise you!) and if not then know that you are so welcome to our home that I hope you feel at home in aswell!!💝🌎 ~Stay safe everyone!
This does not for me in any way put Egypt or it's people in a bad light, all countries have their dark spots. Will pray that God will send good leaders to help Egypt. I will also pray that like minded people yourself will come together and see how you can be use to change the situation.

I can attest, especially walking off the Ferry from Gibralter. Good news for me though was about a few miles away from the port, it was less and less.

Thanks for this video mate. I've travelled to countries far poorer than Egypt and yeah, people haggle for tourist dollars,....but not like here.
Tips for others:
*You will get sick of the words "TAXI" "TIPS" "WHERE ARE YOU FROM".
(food, taxis, tours, everything!)
* Use Uber instead of the constant battle with taxis.

I used to want to go but I'm a woman so it's a nope for me. I've seen even well experienced male travellers have a bad time in videos.
True that, Chris, appreciate your input in this discussion, thanks!
indeed , you should blame the Egyptian people for this .. they love making and live in corruption .

So sorry that you had to witness that

You get scammed if you're a fucking idiot. Don't be a fucking idiot and you won't get scammed and I am talking here about legit scams not ripoffs
Love your channel. I'm leaving for Egypt Wednesday. Other than the scammers, any other advise? Is UBER really legit there?
it works fine in big cities.
Yea
@@mariemmagdy9679 But why is uber not allowed at the airport?

"Some people got scammed to drive around Cairo for one day for like $300"/
This is definitely not a scam, this might have been a rip off but a scam hell no. If these people agreed beforehand to the fees, there was actually nothing wrong with it at all.
Don't know when it will take effect www.reuters.com/article/us-egypt-uber/egypt-court-orders-suspension-of-uber-careem-services-in-victory-for-taxis-sources-idUSKBN1GW1O2

Love that you talk about the good and bad parts to keep an eye out for when traveling. Keep up the fantastic videos!
Appreciate that Elle! All the best!
Cut to the chase, man. You spent 7 minutes talking about not listening to a street scammer.
I'm Egyptian and I'm so sorry for your experience.
مصر هي امي
Unless you are the one doing the scamming, you have no reason to be sorry x
This video is racist though,I'm the one who apologizes.
@@bobbyokeefe4285 Not hoping to offend but it's not racist to point out a real problem or share a bad experience you went through. It's clear he still loves our country and his story is valid.
@@sarahsami8744 Yes,you are right I was being sarcastic.
I am just aware of that it might be hard to see for someone who isn't used to it..... that's all.
oh,sorry then i apologize :)
naba hrhhr All okay...😉 Yeah in general I'd be all about animals and all...
Ok jesus loves you God bless
I am Egyptian and spread in the street, and for the first time I know about the method of this monument, oh man, I make sure that you are good enough because you are spreading a certain experience to a large country like Egypt with a large population. Therefore, our Lord, he caused you to fall into bad people, nothing more
yeah, I do see your own pont
Nice work, Jas. Thank you ❤️
Indigo Traveller you're welcome Nick always a pleasure 💙
Lol😂😂😂 10 egp it's not even the quarter of 250 usd
Team Ahmed obviously he was lucky he even got that I wasn't obliged to give him 10 EGP
it is even less than 1 usd
Egyptians abroad I've come across are incredibly smart.. but a lot of them have left permanently I guess.
I was followed down a block by a guy after leaving Cairo airport trying to get me to go into his cab, even though I could see the hotel I was staying in. It was my first foray in Egypt. Still loved the country and people and can't wait to go back. I just did extensive research to know what to expect before I arrived.
Nice
Unfortunately that’s true even for Arabs tourists, they get scammed all the time especially if it’s your first time visiting Egypt. Piece of an advice plus what you have said, don’t deal with out airport guys offering rides or anything + stay in a well respected hotels + Use Uber. That would minimize the scams hahaha have a nice trip tho :)
و الله و من قبل 2011 هههههه
Cheers 🙏
don`t feel bad about it even we the egyptians go in it every now and then we had a guy who used the real wall street wolf and convinced him to come to egypt to give a lecture in the cairo stadium and sold allot of ticket and he took the money and vanished the guy is a monster he defeated the master and i read it once on social media 2 years or more ago but i`m not sure if true or not that we had a guy who joined isis and they made him a head of a city or village something like that and he collected 2 million $ zakat which is an islamic taxes that only goes on musilms and he took the money and also vanished so you are not alone in this we defeated the masters of the game
to be honest Ahmed this is all over the Arab countries , similar situations happened to my family.
It’s sad but that’s reality in every disrupted, chaotic and economically fallen country .
so sad to hear that man may god give you the best she is an animal with no heart
Thank you 🙂. God bless you
Am currently in Egypt Allot happened to me but nothing was taken because I came broke
Damn what happend bro i am about to go to egypt XD
مش كل المصريين كدا . فى تجار كتير عندهم امانه . وإنشاء الله تزور مصر مره تانيه وميحصلشي معاك كداا .
Amen to that James, a sad aspect for sure.
On behalf of all good Egyptians, I am really very sorry for that bad experience you got here in Egypt. Your fingers are not the same, I wish you the best the next time.
eslam nasrallah don't be sorry for being Egyptian. I made some nice Egyptian friends also :)
James Holder Egyptians love and hate Egypt too (maybe mostly hate now!) so this makes you an Egyptian too!!!
The government scam Egyptian people big time, then you want them to stop little scammers :D
i am egyptian and lived in egypt most of my life. totally agree with you and i like your videos on egypt. keep it up and dont bother about negative thumps.
Thanks ❤️
Non arabic speakers pay 50 EP to visit pyramids n museum. if u read and understand arabic u pay 2!!!
I feel sorry for Coptic Christians who are forced to live under an oppressive society in Egypt
Egyptian here! born and raised
What he's saying is completely true.
Nasser was the biggest scammer. LOOOL.
Mohamed Kandil ممكن تقولي هوا قال ايه
Semsem Eini now you have the US backed scammer.
Try to go to Egypt without money, and you will find that the Egyptian people will help you for free

I feel that you have an honest perspective and present your experiences of your travels in a fair manner.
Its a very bad place if you're a Coptic Christian too.
Really? Dont the Coptic Christians run the country?

Khan el Khalili is the best place to get scammed :D :D i can't resist the sellers there

they live in scam , the shops there are rented for 5$ and they refuse to pay more .
~A Message from an Egyptian
I can't express how right you are ... coming from a local Egyptian citizen it embarrasses me that we have such a problem.
"Every rose has it's thornes"💟 and Egypt has a dark side too (that I in no way love or glorify i actually wish i could vanish once and for all!)
Because no one has to deal with these things and I trully know how beautiful traveling is and how easily impacted you are by the little things in the county and the little actions of the people... So I sincerely apologize if you are someone who came to this video from a bad experience (We are not all like that I promise you!) and if not then know that you are so welcome to our home that I hope you feel at home in aswell!!💝🌎
~Stay safe everyone!
This does not for me in any way put Egypt or it's people in a bad light, all countries have their dark spots. Will pray that God will send good leaders to help Egypt. I will also pray that like minded people yourself will come together and see how you can be use to change the situation. A great leader once said, " Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country"
Dude I’m not reading all this.
Vanish then take a dive into the Nile river ❤
Speak English and other European languages as little as possible and don’t look white and you won’t get scammed.
