Marvel Mystery Oil History: Founded in 1923 by Burt Pierce, the brand has remained legendary for over 90 years. Pierce’s reputation for ingenuity preceded him as he was already well-known for inventing the Marvel Carburetor, standard equipment on 80% of all vehicles produced after World War I. Vehicles of the post WWI era encountered carburetor problems, the most perplexing being clogged jets due to high lead content and other contaminants found in the gasoline of the time. The problem motivated Pierce to direct his creative ingenuity towards formulating a blend of chemicals and petroleum products to clean and maintain clogged jets. He was successful beyond his wildest expectations and the legend of MMO was born. Marvel Mystery Oil proved to have other beneficial effects on the engine. By creating a top ring seal, it produced higher compression and by preventing blow-by on power strokes, it resulted in more power. Marvel Mystery Oil also improved gas mileage and minimized engine wear.
Great work on the 225DX videos, they're how I found your channel! I have one myself that I've been working on and can rarely find info about it. Keep the videos coming!
When you use the impact driver, turn it in the direction you want the screw to turn while impacting it with the hammer. It usually only takes one strike of the hammer to loosen it. Hope this helps.
Valves or decomp valve but I've been riding these my whole life never heard one that didnt have a tick think it would lose its yamaha magic if its fixed
I think that tick isn't a problem I have a 87 Honda and it sounds like that ... Yeah and I agree the tires shuld be softer .... Keep the videos coming ....... Do some snowmobile vids.... #stayup
MMO is great stuff when used for the problems it can fix . Lubricate injectors , clean and unstick hydraulic lifters , unclog oil scraper rings , clean sludge out of oil galleries and cylinder heads , clean valve stems and seals . I've used it for over 35 years along with seafoam .
5:13 Check the oil level procedure. Most engines require that the dipstick be screwed down, then removed to check the proper level. I wonder if MMO is not much more than thin version of ATF. I've used it before with little to no success. There's really no "cure in a can" for mechanical issues IMO.
Snow is so much fun on a three-wheeler! I have that exact same 225DX, this is my second one, they both sound roughly the same. The first one I had was back in 1999, and I just got another one in October 2022 - they sound exactly the same. I have changed all of the fluids, cleaned out the carb (made the biggest difference) and basically cleaned it up at this point, the valves are next for mine. I appreciate the great video made. I love the "snap" noise of a bolt coming loose, it is sweet.
That sound is normal for mid to late 80's yamahas. The BW's and TW's tick like that as well. I own several 80's yamahas and have dealt with these since they were new. Your Shaft sounds good to me.
super fun that you got it started and it gets better and better, you are really good. You do not see those three wheels here in Sweden and if you do, they are sold for a lot of money. You know here in Sweden the Swedish people are crazy in old vehicles, and pay almost anything when they find what they want. greetings from Sweden brother
I used marvel on my 1983 atc185s , I didn't notice a big difference but I added a little bit of Lucas oil stabilizer and it quieted it down. I also like the stp oil stabilizer because it has zinc in it
I use MMO in the gas of my machines after they have sat a few seasons. Like the Snow blower, generator, and power washer. Before I put them all away for longer term storage I run them all empty. My snow blower is at least 15 years old and I’ve never had a carb or starting issue with it. Oil changes and one auger and worm gear rebuild after a lot of use. Project farm did a ton of more scientific testing on MMO and Seafoam and proved without a doubt that these products do in fact help with cleaning and adding a bit of compression. While they aren’t going to repair broken or worn out parts they can help older worn motors limp on for awhile.
Hey brother . Man this video brought tears to my eyes I had that exact same three wheeler as a kid I love it to death and ride it hard did many repairs but never had to take the engine apart at all just maintained it and it lasted a long time I even broke the left side axle shaft and my dad welded it back together lol was never the same but last till the clutch pack went out take care of the old Yamaha thanks for the good memories
Sounds better after you made adjustments. I had trikes growing up love them. My cousin had a 225 that had reverse. I had a Honda 200 a law 160 and a Honda 250sx and a 185
I live in Florida and have a 1985 ATC 250SX in South Dakota at a secret location that I would love to ride in the snow right now! Man, did it look like you had a blast!
my guess is that your automatic timing chain tensor has a bad spring in it. I had a sloppy timing chain that made that sound. I replaced the auto tensioner with a manual one bc the oem was prone to fail. I adjust it every time I check clearance and it works like a charm. Use the ol screwdriver technique to hear where the tic is coming from.
This is normal for these older aircooled motors..brand new they had a tick.should be good for a while if it's not smoking and valves and chain are in spec leave it alone..eventually will need a head work, guides, new valve seats cut in, it would be really loud though
With the handle of a screw driver against your ear, touch the tip of the screwdriver to the engine block, head, and transmission with the engine idling to further diagnose where the noise is coming from. Also realize that the exhaust pipe, being so old and rusty, is probably thinner than a new one, and you're probably hearing the exhaust pulse though the thinned pipes. The same theory would apply to cars with exhaust headers instead of cast iron manifolds....
When I was 12 years old I rented one of those on South Padre Island the first time I put my foot down on the corner I ran myself over it ripped me off the bike. The first thing I remember thinking was I hope my mom didn't see that because she won't let me continue to ride it I rented it a week later with my lawnmowing money. That second time went flawless.
The ticking has something to do with the adjuster I know you probably won’t read this but you gotta make it as lose as you can then tighten to factory reset these bikes always had these problems look up the resets
One of the things I do like to use Marvel Mystery Oil on is engines that have been sitting for years and are stuck. I will pour a cap full down each spark plug hole and let it set a couple days and then start working the engine back and forth.
Loosen the locknut. Turn the clutch adjuster with a screwdriver counter clockwise until resistance is felt. Turn it back, 1/8 turn (clockwise). Tighten the locknut to 11 ft.-lbs.
For your motors safety i wouldn't go too tight with the timing chain tensioner, I have broke a a cam gear by not realizing i had gone too far. My motor jumped time in process of gear breaking and had bent valves as the outcome
Sounds like the stator. I removed my stator to fix a leak, and i slightly damaged the edges making it uneven (not a perfect circle) when I put the stator back on, it made that same ticking sound.
Dude it doesn’t work that way you use a feeler gauge loosen a lock nut and then turn a threaded piece to open or close gap it’s an overhead cam not a mid cam engine
Oil additives can help clean out carbon deposits, sometimes it thickens the oil to help reduce noise but nothing in a bottle can fix a mechanical issue. Just masks the problem. Kinda like turning up the radio in ur car to mask a leaky muffler
The timing chain adjuster, you need to wind in the bolt until the rod inside is flush with the bolt. Then lock the nut up. I have an xt200 and the head is also ticky. These ac engines are known to cause concern for many people that don't understand that they are just noisy. Nice to check the vales and chain though for peace of mind.
If this thing shares oil with the clutch, you DON'T NOT ever run MMO or products like it! You should never run any sort of friction modifier additive through something that relies on friction to operate. The oils these machines run on are specifically design to not cause problems. Side note: MMO can fix loud valves, but it can't fix improperly adjusted valves.
Older vehicles call for older fuel. older fuel had more lead in it! valve slap is also caused by lack of lead in the fuel put lead additive in the fuel!
The timing chain tensioner has a little rod in it that should be flush with the outside of the adjuster nut. Over tighten it and you’ll see what I’m talking about. The sound you are hearing is probably piston slap the side to side movement of the rocker arms is completely normal
Check for exhaust leak, dont over tension timing chain bad things happen. My big best had that tick, it was the lifters smacking new lifters and valve springs cured it.
I miss going up to New York and visiting family they are from Oneida I was born in Sarahcuse but we have been in South Carolina since I was one love the videos man
How did u find the specs and stuff for thar engine because i have the exact same one and im going to rebuild the enginr but i dont have the specs and stuff for it.

I'm so glad you are uploading more often again
I have two Yamaha 225 DX's they both have that exact sound, they have had it for at least 15 year's little Lucas helps but you can still hear it
Same with mine. It's pretty typical and not something I worry too much about it
Great work on the 225DX videos, they're how I found your channel! I have one myself that I've been working on and can rarely find info about it. Keep the videos coming!
Adjust the valves.
Trying to use MMO for top end noise like you're experiencing only works with hydraulic lifters.
Ed Gregorowicz most definitely, alittle adjust on the ol ‘ rocker arm and she’ll be good too go I’d think !
You don't say in the video, but the valve clearances are supposed to be checked COLD.....
Because metal expands when heat is applied to it lol I meant to say it expands
Actually, it EXPANDS.
That's also why the exhaust clearance is greater that it is for the intake.... The exhaust valve is hotter.
Ed Gregorowicz he adjusted them in the video.
When you use the impact driver, turn it in the direction you want the screw to turn while impacting it with the hammer. It usually only takes one strike of the hammer to loosen it. Hope this helps.
I checked it on my boot before I started hitting it. I may not have been hitting it hard enough. Or the bolts havn;t been touched in a decade.
Valves or decomp valve but I've been riding these my whole life never heard one that didnt have a tick think it would lose its yamaha magic if its fixed
It takes 10 minutes to adjust those valves I’ve had one it’s super easy
Some people just arent mechanically inclined. It sucks because these people always end up with the best shit
parker base watch the video. He adjusts them...
Some time it still tick after ajust the valve
I just got a 225dx how would u do that sir
I have one of those impact screwdrivers and I love it man they come in handy when you dont wanna strip out a screw!!!
I think that tick isn't a problem I have a 87 Honda and it sounds like that ... Yeah and I agree the tires shuld be softer .... Keep the videos coming ....... Do some snowmobile vids.... #stayup
I use marvels for preventative cleaning and lube in the tank and in the crank case off and on not constantly.
I remember the video with the John Deere Kohler with a rod knock when you put lucas stabilizer and it "fixed it" 😂🤣
Adjust the valves
I’ve been watching it since you ever bought The three wheeler and I come to say you are one handyman
Valves

MMO is actually estimated 70% mineral oil and 30% mineral spirits and then 2% synthetic plasticizers
The Yamaha tech manual for this trike specifies that you do exactly as he did (not screw the dipstick down) to check the oil.
MMO works wonder when trying to free up a stuck motor. also it smells awesome!
Also the chain tensioner is spring loaded so make sure you don't over tighten it
Snow is so much fun on a three-wheeler! I have that exact same 225DX, this is my second one, they both sound roughly the same. I've been enjoying the more relaxed, detailed videos recently. Thank you and keep up the good work!
I love the snap too! As long as the whole bolt comes out....great video,thanks...
That sound is normal for mid to late 80's yamahas. The BW's and TW's tick like that as well. I own several 80's yamahas and have dealt with these since they were
new. Your Shaft sounds good to me.
i had a yamaha tw200 that sounded same. a tappy valve is a happy valve. be careful over tightening that cam chain.
I'm tryinging to finish the last video and here comes another one.
2 videos in 1 day spoiling us😮
Legendary in small amounts too much blow motors
Put in a little of that Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer. That quiets down anything.
The rocker arm is supposed to float back and forth. I'm a motorcycle mechanic for a living. That's supposed to be like that
super fun that you got it started and it gets better and better, you are really good. You do not see those three wheels here in Sweden and if you do, they are sold for a lot of money. You know here in Sweden the Swedish people are crazy in old vehicles, and pay almost anything when they find what they want. greetings from Sweden brother
Check the compression relief lever adjustment as well, if it's to tight it will cause a tick, as well as possible low compression.
Have you adjusted the timing chain and valve clearence
Tele Man65 he did in the video.
I used marvel on my 1983 atc185s , I didn't notice a big difference but I added a little bit of Lucas oil stabilizer and it quieted it down. I also like the stp oil stabilizer because it has zinc in it

Check your valve lash and make adjustments accordingly!
Abused my Honda atcs hard never changed oil once lol still running strong to this day
Siri popped up on my on my phone from the audio around 4:20. Then you said siri im not talking to you, wierded me out for a second
mine too after replaying it and editing it.
Just picked up a 225DX. Excited to bring it back to life!
Gotta watch tightening the timing chain tensioner. Too much tension will make your cam tight and wear out the cam bearings
my guess is that your automatic timing chain tensor has a bad spring in it. I had a sloppy timing chain that made that sound. I replaced the auto tensioner with a manual one bc the oem was prone to fail. I adjust it every time I check clearance and it works like a charm. Use the ol screwdriver technique to hear where the tic is coming from.
His already has the manual one.
Yamaha is also good about placing a sticker on the fenders which tells you valve clearance specs.
I think the ticking noise is louder now but should still be a quick fix if its not too bad
I'd recommend trying to run higher octane gas to see if that fixes the noise. It doesn't sound metallic, but I can't necessarily tell from the audio.
Also don't forget you need the missing top motor mount. The one that bolts to the motor head and frame.
Also turn the motor by hand and see if it’s a slap it could be the timing chains with the spark plugs out
I've only used the spray on bolts, never used the fuel/oil additive.
This is normal for these older aircooled motors..brand new they had a tick.should be good for a while if it's not smoking and valves and chain are in spec leave it alone..eventually will need a head work, guides, new valve seats cut in, it would be really loud though
Nice video. On a good topic.
With the handle of a screw driver against your ear, touch the tip of the screwdriver to the engine block, head, and transmission with the engine idling to further diagnose where the noise is coming from. Adjust the valves and the timing chain will help, but those old Yamaha had a problem with the cam bosses in the head wearing out.
Use Marvel Mystery Oil also in the Gas it really is legit for more power and smooth operation.
You need to fix the exhaust leak. That is where most of the noise is coming from.
I use mmo in my ATV's gasoline and i go a bit heavy and it runs with great power
Another great video, thumps up!
One of the things I do like to use Marvel Mystery Oil on is engines that have been sitting for years and are stuck. I will pour a cap full down each spark plug hole and let it set a couple days and then start working the engine back and forth.
I'd like to try a compression/ leak down test using marval mystery
I’m loving the new schedule dalton stay froggy fresh and try not to blow up that 225 lol
Loosen the locknut. Turn the clutch adjuster with a screwdriver counter clockwise until resistance is felt. Turn it back, 1/8 turn (clockwise). Tighten the locknut to 11 ft.-lbs.

Marvel Mystery Oil works great on cleaning injectors, (EFI System)
My 92 XR100 had the same sound...look for some kind of chain adjustments for the timing chain. That fixed my problem maybe it'll fix your issue too.
Hey dalton I just gotta say I missed your videos and I rly like the new upload schedule Bc the more 3D the more awsommeee the braaappppp machines
twist your impact screw driver, like you would to undo it before you hit it with a hammer
you should explain what the impact driver is and how and why it works, i suspect most of your audience doesn't know.
could it be a loose valve that needs a 1/4 turn tightening?
Dude it doesn’t work that way you use a feeler gauge loosen a lock nut and then turn a threaded piece to open or close gap it’s an overhead cam not a mid cam engine
Haha know whats funny? My iPhone was sitting next to my computer when you said "hey siri, whats 20%....". My phone responded lol :0
Oil additives can help clean out carbon deposits, sometimes it thickens the oil to help reduce noise but nothing in a bottle can fix a mechanical issue. Just masks the problem. Kinda like turning up the radio in ur car to mask a leaky muffler

Pour that whole liter of Magic oil in there!!!
Gives it 11hp

That sweater tho I remember when you rode ur lawn mower to puglifes place
Austin Black yeah he she make more vids with him
Exhaust leak?
My Hondas sound same it’s the valves adjust them also bear claws on back go anywhere
Let see a video on fixing it right with a valve adjustment.
I use seafoam in my truck works pretty good.
Older vehicles call for older fuel. older fuel had more lead in it! valve slap is also caused by lack of lead in the fuel put lead additive in the fuel!

Yo man where did you get that impact driver I've been looking for one of those for a long time
found it in my dads tool box back in the day LOL
They usually come in an impact socket set. Mastercraft etc. At least they do in Canada. That’s how I got myself one.
@@tracecole8130 well they don't come that way here in the US wish they did though
@@outdoorsmansgarage that suck sorry man. Amazon has sets of just the impact driver in a case with different bits.
Can you still buy new parts for these? I've always wanted one of these since they came out. I'd hate to buy one and can't find parts.
you have the valves set too lose try tightening the valves down a quarter turn and then try running it
That's a value tick for certain.
Check for exhaust leak, dont over tension timing chain bad things happen. My big best had that tick, it was the lifters smacking new lifters and valve springs cured it.
Big bear
When he said hey Siri mine went off no joke I was like wtf
Matthew Tanner sane here😂😂😂
How much do you want for your three-wheeler I've been looking for one for a while
I miss going up to New York and visiting family they are from Oneida I was born in Sarahcuse but we have been in South Carolina since I was one love the videos man
i have a 83 honda 200, would like to also have another like a yamaha to go with it.
You'll have to replace the top end
How did u find the specs and stuff for thar engine because i have the exact same one and im going to rebuild the enginr but i dont have the specs and stuff for it.
If it aint broke dont fix it. Seems to run good so and if everythings adjusted to spec call it good and ride the thing.
Older Yamahas have loud rocker arms. Can’t diagnose considering I’m not there, but that would be my guess.
Its sounds like a lil less tic and a slight lower ideal
i would love to learn how to test oil pressure on this michine
All trikes have that small tick, I have a 200 Honda and it sound the exact same, also those tires should be wayyy softer, looks like it’s a rock
Those older yamaha,s are very well know for top end tics n rattles...
ELSERGIO NIÑO...FROM SONORA, México...KEEP IT FROGGY FRESH-BRO
