It's amazing how serious and dry Rowan Atkinson is when he's not playing a character. He's not a "joke" comedian, or even a "story" comedian, he's a smart character actor.
A surprising proportion of very ‘funny’ actors/performers are actually quite shy in person, they ‘inhabit’ their personas or the characters they portray but aren’t naturally funny people. Eg Eric Morecambe, Ronnie Barker, Miranda Hart, etc. Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel would be classic examples.
Rowan Atkinson's transformation of his face when he gets into character and does the voice when he reads his lines is amazing. He looks almost like a human tortoise.

Did you know that RA, despite his Mr Bean character having over 80 milion followers on social media, he does not own a social media account himself? That's how disciplined he is.
If you listen to his interviews, he has explained SEVERAL TIMES over the years that he actually (ironically) has no sense of humor at all. He rarely laughs at anything. He's a more serious person. I know that sounds strange coming from him but that's who he is and he's very honest about it, so keeping a straight face during these skits is very easy for him. It's just a performance for him. He has no sense of humor himself. He has stated however that he's not proud of the fact that he lacks a sense of humor... It's just who he is. I love him regardless. I think this is necessary for someone to truly understand and express humour.
He always said he hated doing interviews 'as himself' as he (wrongly) considered himself quite boring.
He spends a lot of time analysing every aspect of his sketches, deciding what is funny, how he can make it funnier etc.
