Angel Heart is a masterpiece! I have seen the film tree times and I always discover something new on it. The end ist not an ordinary ending but a peace of philosophy!
Killer film! One of Mickey Rourke's top 3 performances of all time, imo (with Barfly and Johnny Handsome). I never understood how he wasn't spoken of in the same regard as DeNiro, Pacino or Hoffman, his emotional performance in Angel Heart is spellbinding. I can't imagine anyone creating a better remake when this is damn near perfection.
I saw this movie when it first came out and have watched it probably over 20 times since. It is indeed a masterpiece on every level. The stars were aligned… Rourke and DeNero were at the top of their games, the sets, writing, and music were perfect ….I’ve never been so enthralled with a film before or since. I never understood why it didn’t sweep all the awards. That is when I started having a very dim view of awards and realized they were all bogus.
Yeah, but they always want to remake and mess up the perfect ones...just today I read Rob Zombie is remaking Jaws. I just hope they never touch scarface, they ruined the color purple
One of my all time favorite movies! I have watched this over and over, Robert DeNiro is absolutely amazing and creepy from his first appearance until the end. Mickey Rourke blew me away! Lisa Bonet was just as fabulous! I give it 5 stars!!!❤❤❤
Have you ever read the Book? I liked the Movie and one of these days I like to read the Book. I think it was interesting to see DeNiro play someone who was not a Tough, New York Street Thug. Louis Cypher was very Urbane(I think that is the right word) which is usually different than the parts that DeNiro usually plays.
I liked DeNiro, but I didn’t like it when he had the contacts in. I just felt it was a little on the cheesy side and seemed out of place from the rest of the movie. If it were a bit bit more subtle, maybe darkening his irises or something, I think it would’ve been more effective.
I'll have to watch it again. After renting the video amidst all the "hype" and her removal from the Cosby Show, I was disappointed in how small her part in it was. What I saw her doing was also another turnoff. It should have kept the X rating.....the "love" scene was hardly a love scene. It looked like she was being raped - a guess all the perverts got thrill seeing Cliff and Clair Huxtable's daughter being treated like a piece of meat. Hated it!

you missed Deniro supposedly asked Rourke to not speak to him on set because of their characters in the movie. This caused a feud between the two that exists to this day.

An ex-gf of mine believes Lisa Bonet was fired from The Cosby Show because of this movie, and Bill Cosby being a prude about the sex scene in the movie. She did vanish from The Cosby Show shortly after this, and it would be ironic and hypocritical considering what Bill's been convicted of.
Actually Lisa was notoriously difficult to work with and Bill actually carried a lot of water for her. He created A Different World for her because she was tired of Bill's show but she soon grew tired of her new role on A Different World. Lisa is one of those actors that believes you do an acting job and quickly move on. Being on a show brings a steady paycheck but also brings the risk of being typecast. Look at Big Bang Theory. Those actors walked away from that show with nine figure bank accounts. You don't have to work again if you don't want to. Cosby reaped 300 million from The Cosby Show and Different World.

We deeply culled our collection years ago. "Angel Heart" was a keeper. Saw it in the theater, owned it on VHS, kept it on DVD. Masterfully directed with amazing performances throughout. It is creepy beyond creepy.
I’ve seen this movie several times over the last 30 years, having watched it on tv in the early nineties. It’s a real cult classic gem with a great performance by Mickey Rourke as the title character Harry Angel. Even though his role is very small Robert De Niro as the satanic Louis Cyphre makes a great impact, it’s kind of weird that Rourke’s character doesn’t catch on straight away as it is clearly telegraphed to the audience as Louis Cyphre = Lucifer. Independent Studio Carolco was really making a name at this time mixing big budget movies with low budget classics like this. Highly recommended.

De Niro and Al Pacino both played Devils and both nailed the roles perfectly. The Devil's Advocate and Angel Heart are easily two of my all time favorite films.
I own the DVD of THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE and loved Mickey Rourke in that film. A few scenes were shot on location near my Bronx neighborhood. Great time capsule of the 1980's! Gotta say, the European film poster for ANGEL HEART actually looks like an early 1940's film noir poster...

First off, setting the love scene to the song "Soul on Fire" was brilliant. The attention this movie got about the love scene was what intrigued me to see it, but literally everything else about the movie was what I remembered most because the acting, story, mystery, set design costume design where off-the-charts fantastic!
I watched Angel Heart in 1988 in the VCR version of the movie, and in my opinion was an instant Classic. Robert De Niro and Mickey Rourke were at their best in their performances.
I have recently watched so many movies and forgot about them right away. Angel Heart is the exact opposite, you watch it and never really forget it. It really sticks with you.
Lisa Bonet is pronounced ‘Bo-nay’. And she is wonderful in it. Definitely shrugged off her Cosby good girl image in one swift stroke. This is a great movie, but my biggest gripe is something someone pointed out years ago: those who are not in command of their souls should not be in fear of losing them. That’s the big problem with this movie - at no point does the main character have control of his actions when his is committing his crimes.
A split soul , not " 2 " . Johnny , had a contract and attempted to break it . Once he attempted to break the contract , his soul became property of Louis Cyphere. Louis Cyphere tells Johnny this in the reveal scene . " you were doomed the moment you split that boy open ".
As if he didn't already sell his soul for fame, and then further doom himself by murdering the innocent soldier to try to steal his soul? Seriously, how much more does he need to do to justify his losing his soul in your eyes?
Johnny‘s „I know who I am” is heartrending! In my opinion it’s Rourke’s best performance ever. And the movie is an absolute masterpiece of its genre. The ventilator is my favourite) I found interesting to learn how difficult this birth was… one more reason to be grateful to Alan Parker and all involved. He fought for his baby and he made it! And it isn’t aging at all. It’s darkness, it’s music, the beautiful young Rourke and the old message: don’t mess with the devil!

Wrote a review for sophomore English shortly after release; teacher was also the choir director at the church my mother made me attend and I was in the choir so I wouldn't have to sit with her on Sundays. I got an A on the review, and the teacher/choir director always had a smile on his face and a gleam in his eye whenever he spoke to me after that, despite my appearance and oft reported attitude. Great review of the film [not movie], thanks. Also, I agree about the posters-the Japanese version is the best. I suspect it was created by a Japanese marketing firm, which is awesome considering the subject matter.

I just watched it yesterday. I remember seeing that movie as a kid I haven't seen in years. When I saw the trailer I knew it ring the bell but until I watched it again. Definitely a good movie even then and now.
It actually IS great. Possibly not the best movie ever made and not on the Jaws level of great, but serious, adult, no-nonsense horror with a very smart script. DeNiro was at that time still an actor instead of just playing himself, Rourke still looked like a human being and is brilliant in this movies. Next to Year of the Dragon and Sin City his by far best movie.
I love this movie, takes you right out of your comfort zone lol. Gotta say though. This movie is so twisted, I cringe when I see the love scene between Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) and Epiphany Proudfoot (Lisa Bonet). Once you catch on that they're father and daughter it's really disturbing.
RIP Alan Parker. I actually rewatched this movie a few weeks ago. Still holds up and the final discussion between Rourke and De Niro is captivating.

Yes, because it wasn't done like DeNiro's yellow devil eyes, but instead just a still picture of the kid.
The kid was added in later because studio heads thought people wouldn't get the ending with out the yellow eye thing.

I have recently watched so many movies and forgot about them right away. Angel Heart is the exact opposite, you watch it and never really forget it. It really sticks with you.
I've read Falling Angel. It's great. I definitely recommend reading it if your a fan of Angel Heart.

Lisa Bonet is pronounced ‘Bo-nay’. And she is wonderful in it. Definitely shrugged off her Cosby good girl image in one swift stroke.
This is a great movie, but my biggest gripe is something someone pointed out years ago: those who are not in command of their souls should not be in fear of losing them. That’s the big problem with this movie - at no point does the main character have control of his actions when his is committing his crimes.
And Caroloco Pictures rears it's ugly head again...don't go changing Minty, we love you as you are.:)

A split soul , not " 2 " . Johnny , had a contract and attempted to break it . Once he attempted to break the contract , his soul became property of Louis Cyphere. Louis Cyphere tells Johnny this in the reveal scene . " you were doomed the moment you split that boy open ".
The killings were just a way to terrorize and eventually frame Harry. His soul was already lost beforehand.
As if he didn't already sell his soul for fame, and then further doom himself by murdering the innocent soldier to try to steal his soul?
Seriously, how much more does he need to do to justify his losing his soul in your eyes?
Johnny‘s „I know who I am” is heartrending! In my opinion it’s Rourke’s best performance ever. And the movie is an absolute masterpiece of its genre. The ventilator is my favourite)
I found interesting to learn how difficult this birth was… one more reason to be grateful to Alan Parker and all involved. He fought for his baby and he made it! And it isn’t aging at all. It’s darkness, it’s music, the beautiful young Rourke and the old message: don’t mess with the devil!
This is the greatest horror pick I have ever seen. A work of genius, that no one I speak to about it has ever seen ! Incredible.

7:13 And her character's name is pronounced not Ep-a-finney but A-pif-a-nee. At least Bonet is not said during the film - how he could watch the movie and still get one of the main characters' names wrong is beyond me.

Indeed a great movie, don't get how the critics could think it wasn't. Rourk does a great job.
Wrote a review for sophomore English shortly after release; teacher was also the choir director at the church my mother made me attend and I was in the choir so I wouldn't have to sit with her on Sundays.
I got an A on the review, and the teacher/choir director always had a smile on his face and a gleam in his eye whenever he spoke to me after that, despite my appearance and oft reported attitude.

Also, I agree about the posters-the Japanese version is the best. I suspect it was created by a Japanese marketing firm, which is awesome considering the subject matter.
Sequel novel was fiiiiiiinally released this year. Can’t wait to read it. Both Falling Angel and Angel Heart deserves more recognition.

I just watched it yesterday. I remember seeing that movie as a kid I haven't seen in years. When I saw the trailer I knew it ring the bell but until I watched it again. Definitely a good movie even then and now.

You got to check it out. The first time I saw it I didn't see that ending coming or Deniro's character real name. It was awesome that first viewing.
It's really good. I liked it back in the late 80s when it was on VHS and Betamax.
It actually IS great. Possibly not the best movie ever made and not on the Jaws level of great, but serious, adult, no-nonsense horror with a very smart script. DeNiro was at that time still an actor instead of just playing himself, Rourke still looked like a human being and is brilliant in this movies. Next to Year of the Dragon and Sin City his by far best movie.
I love this movie, takes you right out of your comfort zone lol. Gotta say though. This movie is so twisted, I cringe when I see the love scene between Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) and Epiphany Proudfoot (Lisa Bonet). Once you catch on that they're father and daughter it's really disturbing.
