I'm reminded of the first murder in Agatha Christie's The ABC Murders. That victim was a tobacconist killed in the exact same way. I wonder if she took any inspiration from this case.
I much appreciate your explanation of how Hollywood was created. Many people do not know the darker deeds of Thomas Edison, and his effect on different parts of history.
Thank you Paul for yet another brilliantly researched video. Must say your dress sense is perfect for these classic cases and keep up the great work, much appreciated!
This case was also covered in the series-- 'In suspicious circumstances' shown here in the UK, hosted by Edward Woodward. Thanks Paul for your wonderful narration.........
There was an ITV true crime series, fronted by Edward Woodward, also covered this story. It's been on recently on the vintage tv channel, Talking Pictures TV.
I have heard of a lot of crime I know a lot about a lot of it I have read and watched documentaries and and bought magazines and books but I'm thankful I found out about this one because this is one I didn't know about.
Fantastic video mr brodie and team. I have heard this story before but in a different light the person on RUclips telling this story said the poor 20 year old young man was made to confess to the murder and was executed but i believe your version 😊
Loved the story. That was some flimsy evidence against the actor. I immediately thought the wife had something to do with it but I also watch way too many true crime videos.
@CashelOConnolly my ex partner was born and bred in Reading so I kinda had a heads up lol. I found Reading to be pleasant. I already knew it's reputation but it us no different to the next town over from me in the central wheatbelt in Western Australia called Northam, just on alot bigger scale... a huge scale 🤣
Love your stuff - another great job. Philip Yale Drew also gained some further notoriety when he married femme fatale/artists model "Delores". Sounds like they were a match made in somewhere other than heaven.
The witnesses are contradictory. They don't notice a drunk American stumbling about the street but they remember a man running? I'm amazed they let go the guy who admitted to fleeing the scene.
@@nicolad8822 that didn’t stop them from trying every which way to bring charges despite the severe lack of evidence, a lack that would have exonerated a Brit yet was still enough to try him until forced to stop
Love your channel and the way you describe the cases are brilliant. I'm not sure if you'd cover the case, but would it be possible if you'd cover the case of Graham Young? Always found that case interesting. Keep up the great work, Sir. ❤ from a subscriber
Thank you for another fabulous episode. Mr. Oliver looks like a lovely man, he and his family deserve justice. Sadly, that isn't possible. You make my day every time you post. Thank you. 😊
I love this channel though I don't usually comment, but I have to ask where you filmed the outdoor footage with you in it Paul. The scenery is always wonderful but today's really moved me to ask about it. Thank you!
As someone said, this story was reenacted on the 1990’s series “In Suspicious Circumstances”. This is a sad story, Mr Oliver was brutally murdered and Drew’s career and life was destroyed and yet we can’t be sure who the murderer really was. If anything, this is a reminder that it’s not always possible to solve every murder nor is it possible to remove the stigma of suspicion from someone accused when there is no way of proving what really happened.
Great video as always! Also, can I just say that I love the English language for coming up with words like "tobacconist"? And it sounds even better in your British accent.
Well Such is Life as an Australian bushranger said before they hung him in the 1800's. Another interesting story, thank you for your channel, much enjoyed. 😊
Please Sir is it possible you could do a vid about the murder at the Savoy in 1923 involving Marguerite Ailbert and Prince Fahmey Bey. I find that case very interesting. Many thanks.
You have a remember this was back in 1929, though - I just ran it through an online currency calculator and that cheque (UK spelling) was worth just short of £80!
I know it is in poor taste to mention one's accent, but I only do so due to my belief ( that) your voice, pitch, tonal quality, and accent is perfect for sleep stories. Have you given thought to doing sleep stories? ❤
Just found your channel, thoroughly enjoying it. Your delivery is very engaging and interesting. The location shots and photographs really add to the videos, appreciate the dedication. Looking forward to more
Wow, that was interesting, Poor Ms Oliver. He may have killed Alfred Oliver so he could not identify him as the perpetrator, but that is usually just someone the victim knows not a movie star. How weird to be held up by a movie star. I had no idea why we (New York) lost the budding film industry to California. I don't care if Edison was smart, he was a putz. Hey Paul and crew. TY💜
Sad & tragic tale of this nice gentleman merchant being murdered at closing time by some derelict bum ! Pity that nobody was convicted of the crime. 💔😢 Tedious fake confessions upset me ! 🤮
Well I never… thought your channel would have grown 🆙 so quickly!! Congratulations My Dashing Paul. Intriguing circumstances and very poor witnesses. Alas too much fame for that American. Great narration as always! I enjoy just listening to you speak. Was the old motorcycle pulling that trailer possibly a delivery driver? Love the scenery! Thanks Paul! Have a decidedly wicked good Halloween!👻🎃👹

This is such a great channel! I always enjoy your straightforward delivery. And Paul is so dapper! Thank you for your hard work, guys. Be well.
Great word, dapper! ❤😊
He is always so well dressed and looks great.
Poor Oliver.. What an intriguing story from England, with a little Hollywood thrown in! 🎥👍 Thanks, Paul.. really enjoyed it!
I was very tired watching this and so at 15:01 I thought you said 'a man farted the north'
I think its bedtime for me.
Thanks for the video Paul
I heard it too!!! XD
Me too 😂
Paul enhances any classic environment.
“Far to the North “ ?
😅😂😂😂 "fah to dah north"
I much appreciate your explanation of how Hollywood was created. Many people do not know the darker deeds of Thomas Edison, and his effect on different parts of history.
Darker deeds?
This comment is deeper than it appears.
All things considered Thomas Edison was a nasty piece of work. Stealing other people's inventions for example.
Thank you, Paul, for showing that being a well-spoken and talented fashionista is possible at any age.✨️💛✨️
Great story! I’d never heard of it. I guess I could say “well I never..”
What a fascinating story I can't ignore
Dapper and elegant presentation again Paul. Thanks for sharing this story.
I love this type of Storytelling❤❤
Well I Never.....this is a case I've genuinely never heard about, great video!
Beautiful backgrounds. Love when you travel!!!
I think he lives in a rural area of Britain
Consistently great videos from this channel.

Perfect timing. Going thru stuff❤ voice very calming . Story puts things in perspective!!

Hey now, some of the most scintillating, provocative conversations I've ever had were with unattended motorized vehicles.

One of my favourite historical channels, always a great day when Paul uploads!
Satie in the background... very nice touch!! And my favorite at that. So relaxing 😌

Tragic story very well presented. Splendid fabrics by the way.

Superb work as ever, sir.
Another excellent episode brilliantly presented : )))))
Great story Paul. You have a remarkable talent.
Thanks for another amazing story, hope you keep finding those for years too come.
Thank you very much.
They didn’t have a very strong case . I’m glad he wasn’t charged.
Yes, but since his life took a nose die I hope he was not innocent. That would be so unfair. Lol

Fascinating
Strong? The evidence was weak AF. He talked about buying tobacco and was drunk. That's about it.
