Is it bad that, after all the hard work you all put into making an amazing video, my fave part is still when Paul says "we'll be back with another story to make you say 'well, I never'"? 😂 Great job yet again!
Thanks for presenting some of histories less reputable stories. Your personality makes*em worth listening to. Has anyone escorted you to the powder room lately? Kudos to you😊
I should add that, as many bookworms will know, Charles Dickens later based the character Mademoiselle Hortense from his novel "Bleak House" on Mrs. Manning. At her execution Manning wore black satin which effectively caused a fashion decline in the material for 3 decades.
Your videos of intrigue, mystery and murder are the best company on rainy nights. I've been enjoying them ever since I discovered the channel. Thank you, Sir.
@My Cancer Vlog probably best put this comment into the comments section rather than tagging on to someone else's reply? It will reach more people. All the very best to you xx
Well not a lot of women were arrested for murder back then, and it’s not like they had modern forensics…. If she’d done a little better it was astoundingly easy to get away with murder back then lol
It’s amazing people were brought to justice back then with the lack of technology. It’s also amazing that almost every single one has the jury coming back with the verdict in less than 60 mins.
I am surprised they kissed since each had not taken the opportunity to save the other from the noose. Is there a single social atrocity Charles Dickens, in his lifetime, did not observe personally? He needed a nice hobby. TY you team, thank you, Paul. 💚
Makes me wonder how many old houses or properties from way back in history have bodies buried under them which people know nothing about....I used to live in a house in Wiltshire which was built in 1805....glad I wasn't aware of people being buried under the floors in properties back then 😨😱
I've got my wool shawl over my shoulders with some hot earl grey tea on a rainy night here, i look forward to all of these videos so much, truly amazing work you do! thank you!🍜💓
You're such an amazing storyteller! When I have down time, this is easily my favorite channel to listen to while playing some Fallout. Thanks for the great content ♥️
My first time watching. What a delight. I enjoyed the production; no small effort. I assume you've been involved in acting. I look so forward to making up for lost time and watching your archive. Oh, and let it be said, "There is no accent on earth as rich and wonderful as a fine Scotsman's"
I was interested in this story as I grew up in Bermondsey in the 1950's and 1960's....but , well I never ...heard this story before. Bermondsey is a very old part of London and I'm sure there are many more shocking stories from in and around this part of London. Thanks for telling the story.
What's always blown my mind about this case is that instead of killing the worse and easier target (Fred) Marie decided to kill Patrick who going by what I know genuinely cared about her, was successful, could give her the life she wanted, and would be missed whereas Fred was a dead beat, alcoholic, lied to win her over, couldn't provide the life she wanted, didn't seem to care about her, and wouldn't be missed. Like i'm not saying anyone should've been killed because they shouldn't of been it's evil no matter what and so are Marie and Fred but logically it would've made MUCH more sense to kill the husband 🤷🏻♀️ He was an alcoholic, unhealthy, and had nothing going on at the time no one would miss him so it'd be easy to do without alerting anyone and even if you did you could suffocate him basically do something that doesn't leave marks and then play it off as it being due to his drinking and poor health whereas Patrick is the worst kind of target- I watch too many crime shows 💀
nah its more likely she considered doing away with either one depending on whose death she stood to benefit from more...id wager patrick didnt really "love" her, she was just available to him.. in the first place he didnt care enough to marry her even though he was her first choice. looks to me he was only using her as a booty call before and after her marriage to fred, marie might have realized this belatedly and resented him more. just my own speculation haha
@@MsOpium Lmao, blowing off the nice one who had made his fortune through corruption, extortion and fraud, yeah? They were all as trash as each other - Patrick was just a little richer is all
Yes, your voice, demeanor, the story telling is very compelling.... Yet, this is only the 2nd video ive actually watched... Well done our chap...!! And of course, 😮
Love your style and storytelling. Just to hear you say frippery is wonderful! Thank you for another fascinating and well presented case with fabulous on site atmosphere.
I take it seriously when, in your closing, you admonish us to take care. I think about it, and I DO take care. The world can sure be an interestingly dangerous place!
Been binging since I subscribed last night. So good. Noticed the background of your blue end screen is duplicate of wallpaper in your studio. Fun. Looking forward to many more episodes.
This is the most detailed account of the Maria Manning case I've ever come across. Wouldn't expect anything less from Mr Brodie. Is " our favourite scotsman" going to introduce the laddies and lassies to Scotland's own bogey man Old Tap - Tap, Thomas Weir ???
Read the book Invention of Murder, it’s about 600+ pages but this case is highlighted within it and is far more detailed than this video just because she references a ton of primary and contemporary sources and delves into how this case was covered in the media and how it influenced art and writing for decades afterwards. She also delves deeply into the trials. A short video, by virtue of only having a few pages worth of script, necessarily must cut SOME things out. This is a great introduction though
Tweeds, tattersall shirt, foulard ascot - Mr. Brodie's classic clothes are a delight to see, particularly being worn in their perfect on-location settings by an excellent story teller speaking in that lovely burr.
Haha! As I explained to someone about a year ago, who had griped about a mutual friend wearing a tattersall shirt, "Tattersall is not just 'making a comeback. If anyone was paying attention, it has never gone away." Classic.
@@eatiegourmet1015 It's still with us as far as I know! The Land's End catalog usually has a nice selection of colored corduroy pants every fall. The even have some soft, stretchy, knit corduroy things that wash well and hold up nicely.
Times change, people don't. They still commit murder and still think they won't be caught. And they still live among us and appear outwardly normal. Thanks for your videos, always informative and entertaining!
I think *both* Fred and Marie got what they deserved! NOBODY should be pardoned for murder, no matter what "connections" they have! Well, I never.. Charles Dickens was there.. Always great to see you out on location Paul. As always, thanks for all the Chilling entertainment and may this fine channel soon reach 1M subs.. 👍
Just came across one of your posts for the first time recently, usually i dont subscribe to channels like this but you are much better than the younger, less life-experienced channel owners. I prefer older storytellers, no gen z's preferably.
I just came across your channel, and I love your story telling (though I confess I wish there weren't so many of these stories to tell). I am writing a historical novel about the early 19th century England, and there is a murderous woman in it. Listening to your stories is a great resource into that time period. Thank you!
Is it bad that, after all the hard work you all put into making an amazing video, my fave part is still when Paul says "we'll be back with another story to make you say 'well, I never'"? 😂 Great job yet again!

Very well done. Tv Quality (the original)
Makes me smile every single time 🥰 💜
Not at all!!! ❤ I could bet almost all of us feel the same! That phrase! This channel name! 💯!!!!!
Paul has a striking look with his accent and tweed. I love to listen to him tell his historical stories.
He looks like a grandpa, that tells you stories. I heard his accent and was instantly captivated
Yes. Any drink in the set, out there, would sell automatically.
I should add that, as many bookworms will know, Charles Dickens later based the character Mademoiselle Hortense from his novel "Bleak House" on Mrs. Manning.
At her execution Manning wore black satin which effectively caused a fashion decline in the material for 3 decades.
His letter to her was really cold.
I really never thought of " 'til death do us part" as "not a single second after that though".
He's here! Our favourite Scotsman.. 👍🏴 I hit like even before listening.. 🤗🙋🏻♀️
"An unscrupulous scribbler" 😄

This is what greed, lies, deception and an evil conniving heart will eventually lead to… nothing good! Another great one, Paul and gang! Thanks!
She certainly didn't lack any self confidence. So sure she wouldn't get caught. Thank you for another great story.
That's because they never had to try and understand the technical evidence that is offered these days (DNA, chemical analysis, etc.)
I must now commit to my memory the words, “Unscrupulous scribbler.” Wonderful!
Yes, so good. He started off selling others
