    So they literally touched nothing except the screens and lenses, this seems like a pretty low effort "upgrade" that leaves some very glaring flaws in place. I had a small amount of hope HTC was back in the game based on the excellent 3.0 trackers, but maybe this is a wake up call that they were barely in it in the first place.

      In about 10 years time when they release another one :( They still can't make Indexes, controllers and particularly basestations quickly enough and they're still selling at the original full price, so I can't see why Valve would bring out another headset when their current one is so sought-after. They also must make a fortune from users buying basestations and knuckles for use with other headsets. They're in a very strong position and have no need to bring another HMD out for the forseeable future.

Yes they've pushed standalone VR to new limits, and at an initial financial loss (purely the hardware) but they had a 'Rift 2' ready to go and then at the last minute they dropped the project in favour of standalone. Many thanks for the Review Mike!
    As an owner of the OG Vive Pro + Index + Base stations + Wireless adapter.
    I can't wait for the PRO 2. The reason I am buying one is exactly that! BUMP in resolution and FOV.
    Also having the ability to play in Wireless mode without any VIDEO compression (ulike Quest 2) and swap batteries on the fly (unlike Quest 2) it's a no brainer for me.
    Looking forward to the Vive Wireless Adapter update as well ^_^
    As for games, I am mostly looking forward playing (and developing some AAA VR game mods for games that actually have proper graphics like HL-Alyx).

    • @hellterminator
      @hellterminator 3 года назад

      1. The Wireless Adapter does compress the video, but instead of h.264/h.265 it uses a custom codec which is much less efficient, but also a lot faster. The result is lower latency (but still not equivalent to wired), comparable artifacting and *terrible* resolution (about 3/7 the resolution of the Quest 2).
      2. Using the Pro 2 with the wireless adapter is just dumb - you'll be limited to a resolution straight out of 2017 with a promised upgrade to 2019 resolution. If you're OK with that, why not save a ton of money and buy a Cosmos Elite instead? Or why not save even more and just keep using your original Pro? The nominal resolution will be the same. Sure, you lose 1/3 of the subpixels, but you gain the beautiful inky blacks of OLED.

    • @Helifax19
      @Helifax19 3 года назад +1

      @@hellterminator Interesting. I have both the Quest 2 and the Vive Pro with the Wireless Adapter. I can clearly see macro blocks and resolution problems on the Quest 2 via Link or Air link but no such issue on the Wireless Adapter (unless the emitter is blocked or the signal drops in quality).
      I couldn't find the spec for the Wireless Adapter regarding the Vive Pro and what is the max resolution it supports, but with the naked eye, I can see a bit lower resolution, but not as low as the Quest 2 resolution.
      (This on an i9 9900k and RTX 2080Ti).
      Comparing both of the them SBS, the wireless adapter clearly wins in terms of quality and performance (and actually being able to change the battery). However a lot of people don't care or have the same high standards ^_^ (Just The Wireless Adapter is as expensive as a Quest 2 after all, but you can clearly see the benefits).
      The only negative I have is that it requires a PCI card so on my Desktop Replacement Laptop I can't use it :( at least not with another external PCI to Thunderbolt enclosure which is bigger than the whole Laptop....)

    • @hellterminator
      @hellterminator 3 года назад

      @@Helifax19 Were you perhaps running low bitrate on the Quest 2? I usually run 100Mbps h.265 and while the image is a bit softer than my Index, I can't really see blocking, but before I upgraded my AP, when I had to run at 30 Mbps, there was very visible blocking. As far as Link goes, something's definitely off about the image and it does block for a second when the scene changes completely (e.g. going from menu to game), but other than that, it's not blocky either. But to be fair, unlike Virtual Desktop, I haven't spent any time tweaking it, so maybe it could be improved.

      @@hellterminator I tried everything from 150Mbps to 300Mbps and auto now with the v28 software. It was always adding a lot of GPU overhead to do the encoding which resulted in best case scenario with macroblocks, worst case scenario with frame stuttering longer than 1 second..

It blew me away when i fired up First Steps... it was pretty much what i had in my head. But for me it was a bit too blurry, i also grabbed a Rift S before they sold out but my gaming rig hadn't arrived until a week after the Quest 2.
    I immediately saw a massive improvement in visuals on the Rift S over the Quest 2, and i fiddled with that thing for a week! Just couldn't manage to hit the sweet spot, and what i could manage... the pro strap had to be SO TIGHT it was miserable after 20 minutes anyway.
    I'm fortunate to have gotten a Rift S, and on the cheap, before they went out of circulation. I don't expect i'll upgrade until next year at the earliest. If it's comfy, and it's clear... you're good to go.

Sure, the Reverb G2 can be a pain to get working, especially in a mixed setup with Index controllers, but it's not bad enough to justify that small of an upgrade, as well as that much of a downgrade in terms of microphone quality. I'm currently torn between the Index and the Pro 2 to replace my OG Vive and I'm still on the fence on which one I should get. Some people stick a little circular piece of gauze and stick it over the mic. Helps stop that 'popping'.

  • @Lilithe
    @Lilithe 3 года назад

    1:50 Seems like the Vive and Vive 2 both have the mic in the same spot. Just an open tube leading directly to the mic diaphragm, at 90 deg to the mouth which is spitting wind into it.
    The mic itself sounds GREAT if you're not spitting wind into it. Too bad they made that hard without modifying it. But the mod is simple... a felt furniture pad over the mic hole.
    That's it. It acts as a plosive filter and you instantly sound MUCH better.

  • @plushiie_

    - The HMD is expensive yes, but what does a 5k monitor cost?
    - If I'm not mistaken, they updated the audio drivers (3d audio or something).
    - Eyetracking is coming.
    - Wireless 5k is simply too much data if you want low delay, hence the reduction when using wireless.
    3 Years ago the Pro was launched, and that was also when they decided to focus on business instead of the consumer. And they did, just look at the Focus 3, it's impressive for what it is.
    My guess is that they used most of their team to develop the new hmd for business and only kept a small group focusing on consumers. That we can see in receiving the facial tracker. So with a small team and covid on top of that, I think there was not more they could have achieved in that timeframe. In the future, I guess they will use the business profits to fund the development of consumer tech.
    The thing I see many people forgetting is that VR is small, we are not a lot of users. Not a lot of users means not a lot of business. People just expect things without realizing how hard it is to develop things, I've seen people getting mad for not being able to stream 5k video at 120hz. There is such a lack of perspective on things. HTC had to develop new compression tech for the cable to even run that much data for christ sake.
