I don't know where to begin to tell you how much fun it was to be a teenager in the UK early 1970s. I enjoyed serious rock/soul but loved the glamorous stuff as well.
I know what you're saying my friend, the old tenements, Slade wizard, it didn't get any better,2p in the phone to bulshit your parents you were staying with your friend, or a lollipop stick to save your 2p, it was so good, Donald 60 year old from govan Glasgow.😂
Have you heard of ELO (the Electric Light Orchestra)? Roy Wood, the singer of Wizzard, formed ELO with Jeff Lynne, & they're still friends to this day. Wood doesn't just play the French horn, he's a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, bass, cello, sax, oboe, piano/keyboards, bagpipes & percussion. Later on in the same year as See My baby Jive, 1973, Wizzard had their biggest hit, I Wish it Could Be Xmas Every Day. It's been re-released several times & is always played at Xmas. I'd say it's 1 of the top 5 Xmas songs in the UK.
t. rex, bowie, roxy music, slade, wizzard, the sweet, mott the hoople, gary glitter, glitter band, cockney rebel, queen, alvin stardust + american guests: suzi quatro, alice cooper. They are not glam for me: bay city rollers, mud.
The UK early 70s/glam rock era was too early for the US. Sweet was one of the great bands from that era that had some success in America, but it's a musical tragedy that Wizzard, Slade, and T.Rex, were not massive there, like they were in the UK, Australia, and many parts of Europe. Still, Gene Simmons and Kiss did credit Slade and this era as being an early inspiration, as they were to many later bands - especially 1980s American glam metal/big hair bands.
Excellent pick. The genius of Roy Wood. Incredible producer, arranger, songwriter. Listen to how he stacks the tracks multiple times. Reminiscent of Phil Spectors "Wall of Sound" projects. "See My Baby Jive" was a hit in the UK, however it stiffed in the states. There is a longer version , you may want to listen to. Roy Wood from The Move, early ELO, Wizzard and beyond...such a talent. Thanks for sharing.
Saw WIZZARD back in the day at my local city hall (1972) at the tender age of 14, my first ever concert, I loved it and was hooked, and I've loved them ever since ! Roy Wood pure genius. 🇬🇧👍
Roy Wood was with 60's band The Move, then helped form The Electric Light Orchestra, before leaving to form Wizzard. He is an exceptionally talented guy. He can play everything from guitar, drums etc all the way through to bagpipes. On his mid 70's solo albums, Boulders and Mustard, he plays everything and experimented with tape speeds to make his voice sound like female voices. You need to hear the full 5 minute plus version of this. This is the edited version used for TV and as other people have said, Wizzard's Christmas song "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday".
How people can get things so wrong, Roy Wood didn't help to form The Electric Light Orchestra, the band was Roy Wood's brainchild in 1968 when he was in The Move, he told his mate Jeff Lynne about his idea, Lynne was in rival Brummie band The Idle Race. Jeff said he'd like to help Roy Wood with his ELO project, Lynne left The Idle Race to join The Move so that both Roy and Jeff would be on the same record label. The Move were on EMI's Regal Zonophone label and The Idle Race were on the United Artists Liberty label. ELO could go ahead when both of them were on Regal Zonophone.
I think you’ll find Roy Wood played all the instruments on the Wizzard tracks as well - the difference being that the other band members were allowed to play along. Roy couldn’t read or write music notation so it was easier and quicker for him to demonstrate what he wanted rather than trying to explain it.
Fun Fact : ABBA were struggling to get hit songs at the beginning of the 70s. Then they heard this in 1973 and it inspired them to do 'Waterloo' in 1974. The rest is history as they say 😊
The lead singer Roy Wood is a musical genius, apparently he can play 27 different instruments, a true Legend in British music, loved growing up listening to Wizzard , so much fun.
This had hit number one in the UK & this is the performance on Top of the Pops. I remember buying this I was 10 or 11 year's old. The music was such fun growing up back then.
I always loved Roy Wood an Wizzard, but Lemmy on bass dressed as an Angel on roller skates was hilarious, I stil remember it like it was yesterday, I grew up loving the glam rock scene
I was born in '81, but I grew up on the music of my parents from the 60s and 70s. ^_^ Wizzard was a frequent sound in our household. My dad was a huge glam-kid back in the day!
Roy Wood is a musical genius. He was, as you can hear here the originator of rock orchestra. He formed a band called Electric Light Orcerstra (ELO). Unfortunately, he was more music than business and was ousted from the band he formed by the dick who became ELOS lead singer. He was brilliant. Still is. When ELO was inducted into the RNR hall of fame it was on the condition Roy was named as the founder.
Ousted…!! Have never heard Roy Wood or Jeff Lynne, the presumed “Dick” in your comments, refer to the parting in such terms…..you must be party to some music history that nobody else has been…🤔
Roy wasn’t ousted by Jeff Lynne. Roy wasn’t happy with the management of Don Arden, couldn’t work with him and decided to leave. Roy and Jeff are still good friends.
If you’re a manager and you have Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood in a band together it’s a waste. Much better to drive wedge between them and split them off into two separate - lucrative - money streams.
I played some Wizzard hits to a friend who is a few years younger than me, when this came out I was about 11 or 12, she was about 8 so didn't know them all. She said "all their songs sound like Christmas songs!" That's because Roy Wood was inspired by the Phil Spector 'wall of sound', where he put everything, including the kitchen sink, on his records. A perfect pop song.
Roy Wood lives just a few miles away from me, just outside Derby, & he's often seen just strolling round town, shopping, as you do when you're a UK music legend!! 🤩🤩🤩
This was a fun blast from the past. Thank you. FYI Canberra ACT is the capital city of Australia, purpose built for our federal parliament and government, like Washington DC.
always loved roy wood ( wizzard ) was 14 in UK when that was in the charts i'm now in ireland. looks like you had great fun listening to the song by wizard. they had great singles!! brilliant artist!!
To have lived this being a teen the 1st time round was amazing had some great groups, brill songs that'd why every body says the best times ever. Happy days ❤❤❤ from rose in Oxford england
Wizzards Brew was my first album. On spotify this track (2006 remastered) has 4.6 mio plays. But the big money spinner wa "I wish it could be Christmas every day" at about 160mio plays!!!
Takes me back to walking my girlfriend home l hear this and l'm back in that street in a town in Yorkshire . We only went out for a month .Just shows how music can imprint on a time place and person. When l find my time machine l'm outer here.
Listen to Roy Woods solo hit " Forever " everything on that song is by Roy the lot just him on his own ...stunning....and he is very very underated imo
I cant believe it was that long ago 1973 Roy Wood was also a wizard songwriter and musician, by this time Roy had been around a few years , hope you enjoy all of his works.
Roy Wood, an absolute legend. I'm still staggered hoew few albumes he released, four if I'm not mistaken, which is criminal as he was so talented. Has he ever received a knighthood or any other titled award?
The greatest and most underated rock star to not of received some award from buck House. My 56 year's of being a fan. So much more than the Christmas single
The one and only Roy Wood, The word legend is thrown around too much these days, but in Roy Woods case, it’s totally justified. He formed a band in the 80s called Roy Woods Helicopters, the first single was titled “Rock City”. Well worth a listen.🙏
I think of this reaction like the scene in Fawlty Towers, the Fire Alarm...."bells ringing" Old lady "Is that the fire alarm?" Basil fawlty: "No no, just listen to it" Old lady "What?" Basil Fawlty JUST LISTEN TO IT YOU OLD FOOL
Roy Wood along with Jeff Lynn left the group the Move ( worth looking into ) in the late 60’s to form The Electric Light Orchestra ( ELO) however Roy Wood decided there wasn’t room for them both and left to form Wizzard.
Roy Wood used Phil Spector's famous 'wall of sound' production techniques on this song. He kind of ramped the concept up to eleven on this actually. :)
CANBERRA IS THE CAPITAL OF AUSTRALIA. CANBERRA means 'Meeting Place" Which is ironically coincidental because that's where our Parliament House is. oh yeah thanks , i did not know that but hearing does not surprise me
Fifty years on and it still sounds fantastic
Jeez,this takes me back!
Back to a time that knocks this current era right out of the park.
In every way.
This is what Britain was up to in 1973!😂 Love it! ❤
I loved this back in 1973 (and Angel Fingers etc) and still love it today FIFTY ONE years later ! Magic music from the genius that is Roy Wood !
UK, Glam Rock era! 1972-1977. Anything went, fashion wise.
t. rex, bowie, roxy music, slade, wizzard, the sweet, mott the hoople, gary glitter, glitter band, cockney rebel, queen, alvin stardust + american guests: suzi quatro, alice cooper.
They are not glam for me: bay city rollers, mud.
Loved it, thank you. Now at Christmas you should play "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" by them...lol.
Roy wore face paint long before kiss
The UK early 70s/glam rock era was too early for the US.

I'm impressed that the bass player, wearing wings, was on roller skates
He is also wearing cricket batting pads. Hehehe.
That's Rick Price, my Dad. He was a legend.
Yeah, nostalgia. In my opinion the 60ties and 70ties were the golden age of music. So much variety. From the Beach Boys to Led Zeppelin.
Happy memories back in the 70s just fabulous

I thought The Moove was spelt with a double "OO"
Jeff Lynne was also in The MOOVE
@@alanstrom2221 No it was The Move, originally they were going to be called The Movement but they decided to short it to The Move.
Loved it back then Love it now
I prefere the longer Version but ain't complainin ❤️🔥🌹
Roy Wood is a genius
It’s said he could get a tune out any instrument he got his hands on straight off the bat, true musical prodigy.
"My life in England in the 70's"
Just pure talent....looks like "Top of the Pops "
Memories forever 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Wizzard's bass player on the roller skates was the great, now sadly deceased, Rick Price.
@@davidc3850 Rick played on the single but Lemmy did the TOTP performance, Lemmy also did the TOTP show for I wish it could be Xmas every day
I was born in '81, but I grew up on the music of my parents from the 60s and 70s. ^_^
Wizzard was a frequent sound in our household. My dad was a huge glam-kid back in the day!

First record I ever bought in 1973 and I never get tired of it. Roy Wood is a genius.

ELO with Roy Wood on vocals Whisper In The Night are a phenomenal song
Roy Wood can play any instrument put before him such a talent
the perf video is cut short, the song goes on another 20 seconds in a stlightly different style bringing in cellos and french horn

Roy Wood once held the door open for my wife (which she will remember forever)...

The makeup wasn't because of Halloween. That was just Roy on a Tuesday, or any other day of the week. 😏
roy wood was a founding member of ELO with Jeff Lynne
