Paul Nicholas and Emu's Pink Windmill Kids: The Life of the Party

- Now here's an oddity and a half: the Pink Windmill Kids outside of their usual habitat. Taken from the Cinderella segment of the 1985 Children's Royal Variety Performance, broadcast on Christmas Day of that year, the gang join Paul Nicholas on stage for a quick song and dance routine. I don't think they were a regular part of that panto, as the Peggy O'Farrell Children are credited in that programme rather than anyone from Corona:

But then again, Paul Nicholas isn't playing Prince Charming here, but instead the part of Buttons - a role he'd filled a year earlier:

As for what panto the Kids were really doing in 1985, well, I'd pay exceedingly daft money for a recording of this:

I'd best stop there before I get too confused. If you can help fill in any details, please leave a comment.
Anyway, the song is called The Life of the Party and comes from the 1967 Broadway musical The Happy Time. The ten Pink Windmill Kids, for those taking notes, are very nearly the line-up for the 1986 series that was just a couple of months away - except that Daryl hasn't yet joined, with Alistair still present from the previous run (even though he wasn't to return). I wonder what the story is there. Either way, I suppose this is the first we'd ever seen of Helen. Oh, and look out for a bit of an unfortunate mishap for Daniel towards the end.

VideotapeFTW I feel like this song is called "Life Of The Party".
Sounds about right to me - but the problem is that there are loads of songs called that, so it's almost ungooglable (word of the day right there). We're going to have to rely on someone recognising it, so let's hope it's an obvious one!
VideotapeFTW Aw man! :(
Got it: ruclips.net/video/gDezHwc0-Uw/видео.html :-)
VideotapeFTW I remember that musical! I listened to some songs from it in 7th grade :)
1:54 poor Daniel. But I like that He stands up and he continous dancing and singing with a big smile!
blooper reel
Even allistar almost fell
this is actually one of my favourite outings that they did. the energy is great. they accompany paul astonishingly well. abbie and daniel (despite his unfortunate fall near the end) are definitely stand outs here, too.
It's very much the forgotten routine, sadly. I'm always amazed at how much Abbie punched above her weight - they had no problem at all putting here front and centre.
New ad compilation with at least one Pink Windmill Kid, by the way: ruclips.net/video/juW1zMs8Tg4/видео.html
@@VideotapeFTW she was definitely a talented dancer, one of the best (if not the best by the end). a few of the other token little kids couldn’t dance very well until they had grown up a bit more, but abbie was pretty much step perfect even on the first all live series. incredibly reliable.
(just took a peek at the ads - think i got them, unless there’s another!)
@@windmillkid I've said it before, but I'm not even sure we saw the best of Abbie, given her age when the show ended. I wish we could have had a series or two with her in the 'lead girl' role.
@@VideotapeFTW completely in agreement with you there. if it had continued until 1990, i’m assuming that abbie would have been given opportunity to step up (seeing that sarah and kelly would’ve been given the boot). considering how good she was already at 13, and her history of being able to consistently punch above her weight, it’s a shame we never got to see more.
abbie is so adorable in this 💗
Nice to see abbie take centre stage for a change ♡♥︎
Paul Nicholas! I remember him from Just Good Friends, which from what recall was a real favourite of my mum. I wonder what the chap is up to now...
I wish I could hear the PWKs singing backup on this song louder
How has this one never came up on my suggestions until now.. this is cool
I love this!
It's funny to see the whole gang in such a different setting, isn't it? They were as great as ever, of course!
@@VideotapeFTW definitely!
@@mgrace386 watch the end of show by typing in the search bar the good old days 1985 and it shows the pwks singing we are the world who was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and was record by the kids celebs in america before they song it in britian.
you might have to scroll down to find it.
Ahh this is iconic
a pwk gang we never got on the show. The 86 gang, minus Daryl, and including Alistair.
Things like that make me wonder how close Alistair was to being in the next series, and who made the decision to go with Daryl instead. I'm pretty sure Cassie's in some of the backstage photos from this, too, so I bet the panto they were appearing in saw subtly differing line-ups every night.
@@VideotapeFTW I can't remember exactly where I read it but I think it's likely that Alistair left the school around this time, as I swear he mentioned in some interview attending ballet school for secondary.
@@stabadaisy2 That's interesting - I wonder whether that was just the normal secondary change at 11, or whether he switched in the middle of the school year.
wait, is that sarah on the far right? didn’t know she was in this one since she wasn’t a part of the pink windmill kids at the time. i also recognised i a few other kids who hadn’t joined the show yet in this performance. did they get to be at the royal variety performance because it was between the 85 and 86 series and they were going to join the pink windmill kids soon?
Yes, this is the first television outing for what is mostly the 1986 gang, plus the last we saw of Alistair. I wonder whether the actual changeover point coincided with the school year.
Is that Jan Francis with him? Ahh I loved the 80’s. 1985!
I'm pretty sure that is indeed Jan Francis, yes.
some one fall on his but, and almost took down that girl to the left of him. Hello Blooper Reil
Poor Daniel!
1:54 It looked like Daniel slipped on something
Yeah, and if you're going to slip over embarrassingly like that, you might as well do it at a Royal Variety Performance!
I also felt bad because I would’ve stopped dancing but glad he kept going
Swoon
wait...so they all left the corona stage school to join the peggy or there taking both
No, I suspect that the Corona lot were drafted in especially for this television performance.
What role are the pwks in? (If u know)
I think it was any old excuse to shoehorn them in to be honest.
Do you have the full show?
Yes, but Children's Royal Variety Show recordings tend to get blocked by RUclips.
Which pwk are in this?
It's the gang from the 1986 series, except with Alistair still present and no Daryl yet.
