Thank u so much sir , I'm a french student and we studied this lesson at university but I didn't understand it till I watched by the English language HHHH , thanks a lot ❤️✨
Thank you for the explanation, sir. It is very understandable to me that am learning linguistics. I have a suggestion that maybe you can recommend the books/reference books that we can read further.
thank you for your explaining, but i have question sir at the end of the video you said that like europians structualists they focused of form and negleted meaning, however london school of structualism cared only about meaning( semantics ) if i'm wrong i hope you'll explain to me.
Really I liked the way you explained structuralism keep going thank you so much I would be grateful if you could give some easy explanations in paragraph form about linguistics schools such as behavorism, functionalism and mentalism thx
Thank you so much for your explanation ! I'm kinda confused . In the end of the video you mentioned that the American and the European structuralists focused on the form not the meaning . It's kinda true but on the other hand Bloomfield criticized Chomsky in this point . He assumed that the meaning is so important that we cannot neglected . Thank you.
our teacher said that the american school focus on meaning not like the european focus on structure ,and she gave us this example "the teacher explaind the lucture " "The lucture is explained by the teacher " she said in european school are diffrent cuz they have diffrent structure but in american are the same cuz they have the same meaning .. what you said sir is the opposite which confused me alot !! so which infs is the correct
@@ikhlasguidoum6652 'Meaning' refers to the semantic meaning. American structuralism fully neglects semantics. The reason for this is because of the influence 'Behaviorism' had on it. Behaviorism starts from tabula rasa, which means that no 'thoughts', 'consciousness', 'mind' or 'soul' were taken into account (so the mental aspect/expressions). It only looks at appearances observable on the outside. They state that every stimulus leads to a response (ex: pablov's dog) and that this response is learned through conditioning. This then got transferred into linguistics. Ex: Tom is hungry -> Tom says: 'Mum can I have an apple' (he learned through different stimula what his 'correct' responds needs to be in different situations) . So American structuralism only investigates and observes the noise that comes out of the speaker's mouth and not the meaning or thought behind it. European structuralism (Ferdinand de Saussure, semiotics): Language is a system of SIGNS who get their 'valeur' (french for value) through their relation with OTHER SIGNS in their network. American structuralism (Leonard Bloomfield, behaviorism): Language is a system of rules, those rules 'guide' the placement and combination of the elements that exist in a particular language. Your teacher's example was ok , but you should note that those 2 differences are not the only differences between both schools of thought. Both American and European schools look at the structure of language. Otherwise it would not be called structuralism :).
If you are studying English in Arabic that's a major problem. It is okay to look for words you do not understand in arabic or any other language that you master better, but to try grasping the lesson in another language, you'll never be able to produce any correct explanation in english and as a student of english you are expected to do so.
i like the way u explain sir i'm algerian girl and our teacher asked us to make a research about it

Yes. Sorry if this is 9 months too late 😂

(6:26 ) you said that one thing in common between them is the fact they focus on form and neglect meaning
