    Wembley Arena, December 1983 and as the lights go down this track kicks in from the sound system to let us all know the show is about to start - the screams are deafening and then reach hysteria as the first few bars of ‘Is There Something I Should Know’ kick in and the curtains begin to pull back…….

    My love for Duran Duran came from my sister's obsession with them. She would dress like Simon, and play all their records on repeat. She bought us tickets to one of their shows in '93 I want to say, because out of respect for all the flooding going on in our part of the country, they did not play "Drowning man". That's pretty damn classy. After that night, I too became a fan.

    You wanna know how I first found out about this band ?....
    I grew up in a small town in the North west of Australia .
    when I was about 10 years old I had gone down the river for a swim and was walking home through bushland (scrub) over what we called "the levee banks" as I approach the only road i needed to cross to get home . This road was elevated and on a sweeping bend . My eyes were focussed on the ground to avoid stepping on double gees and bull ants... when a cassette tape fell from the sky and hit me on the head.. I picked it up *Duran/Duran - RIO* .
    Someone had flung it out the window of their car as it swept around the bend .
    got home... played and FKN loved it .Been a Duranie ever since .
    John Ts bass on the song Rio.......talk about manna from heaven!

    This is just STUNNING - it's like the video that was never made but SHOULD have been made - shades of Save A Prayer and the intro to 'As The Lights Go Down' concert film - it is the best interpretation of the song i've seen. LOVE the 7&RT inspired DD logo with the tiger's eye - just like the symbol used on the cover! I posted this on DD's facebook page - i bet the love it as much as the fans do!!

      37 years on and this still is such an evocative and beautiful piece. Between Nick Rhodes’s spacious textures on the Fairlight, to John Taylor’s perfectly placed lead on the fretless bass line. From Andy Taylor’s measured accents on the guitar, to Roger Taylor’s syncopated counter-percussive rhythms that slowly build, to Andy Hamilton’s perfect sax solo... it all works so damn well.
      This, like much of Arcadia’s stuff as well, I just love. It has such atmosphere and space in it. Something I so greatly appreciated in much of Duran’s output in that period.
      I often wonder how much of an impact Alex Sadkin had though his hand in production? He produced the “Seven and the Ragged Tiger” album, as well as the “Monster Mix” version of their earlier single “Is There Something I should Know?” (along with Ian Little), as well as the Arcadia album “So Red the Rose”.
      They all seem to have that magical “space” in their sound.

    This is my favorite Duran Duran track of all time. I first heard of them while downloading tracks of the 80s and there they appeared. I got hooked on to their music and quickly started to look for more albums. Then, after buying seven and the ragged tiger, I listened to this track and it was sooo moving that I played it a million times. It still moves me. and I thought I WAS THE ONLY ONE that was moved by this track because honestly not many people at my age (28) listen to 80s stuff.

      I used to have it on cassette back when it first came out in 1984. It was my first introduction to Capitol Records' then new XDR cassette mastering and tape duplication process, which was something that desperately needed at the time because all of their prior cassettes before XDR were over distorted. I was forced to get rid of my tape collection shortly after the World Trade Center / Pentagon terrorist attracts on 9-11-2001. After that happened, I found myself laid off from job and with no other job prospects I was forced to live on the streets for several years afterwards.

    This song was the intro music that blasted through the sound system in dark stadiums as the band took their places on stage at the start of their shows on the Seven and the Ragged Tiger tour of 1984. And you could hear the band warming up their instruments and playing extra fillers live behind this recorded music just before the curtain lifted - like John Taylor playing extra bass lines live along with this recorded track. Then the lights went up and the show kicked off. I was there for the Houston, TX show with floor seats, center stage. The place was packed to the rafters and the show was worth every penny.

    • @positivecrusader
      @positivecrusader 8 лет назад +5

      +positivecrusader - I should really tell you some of what I noticed: obviously the sweeping landscape shots à la Save a Prayer (tigers and Sri Lanka do go together after all), and of course the lines, squares, screen splits and slow dissolves, even a ball falling and glass shattering à la Rio and Is There Something I Should Know, the sax player goes without saying, and the sky fills (red at 1:50, deep blue at 3:03) which again took me back to Rio.

    • @lestatdelc
      @lestatdelc  8 лет назад +10

      +positivecrusader Thank you for the kind words and the observations. I did indeed try and go after the look and feel of the Russell Mulcahy video style of the time. I thought the style of the editing and photography of the videos of the time were so impactful and unique, I intentionally wanted to give the visual homage to them in this one. Particularly since Tiger Tiger (and the album Seven and the Ragged Tiger) was just shortly after Is There Something I should Know? and Arena (and "As the Lights Go Down"). So I tried to keep it within that visual language.
      It is heartening to hear from someone who noticed and appreciated the effort.

    Oh my.......WOW.......I can't even.......this is completely amazing. Best fan made video of a DD song I have ever seen. The track itself is one of my favorite instrumentals, but this video really compliments it and perfectly captures the vibe of both the song and Duran Duran in 1983. Thank you so much!

    Thank you thank you thank you!!!
    This has always been my favourite DD song, and this is the video that the boys should have made 30 years ago! This video perfectly encompasses the mystical, exotic-locationed sense of faraway adventure that so many other DD videos aimed for- and this one does an even better job of it, and the editing-style even captures that good old DD visual style- but in a fresh, exciting way. The only thing missing are shots of the boys in their vests and fedoras, sitting around in the jungle and looking wistful (LOL).
    Mitchell Gore, you are a genius. :D

    Love this song! Brings back memories when I had my rhythm lights hooked up to my stereo, it would have different colors for bass, midtones, and treble. I played this in the dark with the rhythm lights....was sooo trippy.😁😁

    Duran Duran play concerts like this kinda stuff every year in Ibiza Timeless ahead of its time for 1983 - 84 one of my first memories as a kid was stealing my big bros Duran Duran cassettes n id listen to it in my bed with my massive walkman 😅 For me Anyone born in the 80s Raised in the 90s this song inparticular encapulates our generation moody uplifting Duran Duran never get talked about so far ahead of their time its unreal similarly were New Order but artistcally Duran duran with John Taylor on the bass n nick Rhoads on the keybord unreal listen if your listening you have impecable taste
