      Hi yes its quite unbelievable that this Victorian wonder is under the streets of Sheffield well worth a visit with waders and a good torch and spare, thanks for comments and watching Pat

      Good torch and *SPARE* ... wise words indeed ...
      Like everyone else, gobsmacked, never knew this was there, lived in Sheffield all my life (OK, that bit is not true, only 1978 - 84), cracking piece of video, top marks to a classical hand-tooled Yorkshire madman of the first water...

      @@patrickdickinson6492 I thoroughly enjoyed this as the desert after my dinner and then just as the music started at the end , a storm was brewing here , becoming very dark with Thunder adding to the whole sense of drama after i had been thinking these tunnels really need to be in a movie , when i realized there had already been a movie with a tunnel system in it ... and a famous one at that : The Third Man with Orson Welles , Trevor Howard , and Joseph Cotten , under the city of Vienna .
      But Megatron is altogether something else ( ! ) overwhelming and really does deserve be in a movie .... a good one , like The Third Man .
      Thank you so much for this exploration ...i'm under the impression you were alone ... is this true ? Anything could have happened down there ; very brave you are and i just discovered your channel ; subbed now , of course .

    I've been in the Megatron four times in recent years. Its a good trip if you start in the Porter Brook around Endcliffe Park or Frog Walk at the entrance to the general cemetery as there are loads of different underground sections. You don't need a boat in the Megatron. We swam along it, to the weir, then slid down the weir and swam out into the River Don.It's only knee deep at the bottom of the weir, you wont go under the water although we didn't know that when we first did it. Cheers, Simon.

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Simon yes I,be walked the full length of the Porter through all the culverts, I would not fancy wading through the deep part of Megatron when I went down in my dinghy it was 5 foot deep most of the way. At the bottom of the Weir there is a concrete shelf stuck out for 4 foot that's the shollow bit of water you mention after that it's 5 to 6 foot deep and when you cross the Don it gets to 8 foot in places. Still a great place to explore, all the best Pat

      Hi Patrick. We had wetsuits and it was fine. Me and my friend Neill did the whole Megatron swim, down the weir and out and across the Don in February this year when there was snow on the ground. We've had many years of caving experience. We're very used to being cold and wet. Good videos, thank you. Simon.

    This is probably the 3rd time I've watched this video (maybe even more since I showed it my Mother in law when we visited Sheffield last year). I cannot express how fascinated I am by it.
    Some 50 odd years ago, I went to school in Sheffield and remember very distinctly standing on the Blonk st bridge wondering what was in that culvert that the River Sheaf came out of and joined the River Don (I don't ever remember anything about the River Porter). If I had known what was just beyond, I might have been tempted to explore a bit, but being only 12 years old, I didn't know how to go about it. My family lived in Sheffield and Rotherham would have been mesmerized too!
    Thank you Patrick for exploring for us and putting it on RUclips.

    Bravo Patrick ~ thoroughly enjoyed this latest video. I'd never heard of Megatron before. What an amazing undertaking and achievement for 1860's. Thanks for the history and the tour. There'd surely be some amazing trinkets and artefacts buried in all that rubble. I'd love to sift through some just for the heck of it. Cheers!
