  • Akai has not address why their mpc sound different since integrating software with hardware. Today we discuss the hidden problem of mpc se (special edition). Although there may not be anything physically wrong with the unit it definitally doesn't sound the same as they use back in the day. I've included clips from E.A Ski as well as Akai RUclips Channel as well.

The older gear dithers the sound quality down, giving lots of sounds a heavy crunch factor. The new MPCs have plugins to do the same.

Current gen MPC's also have AKM converters in them, extremely high-end ones, that will probably never be in production again since their factory burnt down a few years ago...
Akai is doing the right thing by slowly releasing their current stock of hardware and focusing on optimizing the software for them. It sure beats abandoning their current gen platform and squeezing us to adopt a new one.
My only gripe with Akai is that they aren't paying out royalties to roger linn and that should be a criminal act. seriously. if these MPC's weren't so amazing, id totally boycot...

    • @davidcache

@@justletmesigninokthx I agree they sound different, but its not because the current devices lack fidelity, in fact, id wager its the opposite, its the decimated audio on previous MPC's thats commonly preferred on drum grooves.
I often use D16's decimort plugin to emulate a low bit depth, and jitter common in variably clocked devices. It lends well to drum loops and transient laced audio.
Akai has a plugin that attempts to make audio sound like its going through the 3000 but their isn't much you could do in the digital domain without bumping into the limitations of finite furrier transformation.
in short, some things can't be done digitally that are common practice in the analog domain. That said Akai could have used worse converters, and they instead went for the best in the world. I'd say that's a win.

I’ll say this. Back when the older machines came out, We all wanted better sounds too. The 12 bit sound everyone is going crazy for now, every producer/ beat maker worth anything, wanted better. Then the 16 bit era came (3000’s and 2K’s) everyone wanted more. So these companies are just using what’s most current in technology to put in their products. It just so happens that certain genre now prefer the older sound back. 😂

I still have a the MPC 3K, 2K, ASR-10 and e-my E64 along with a few 4-track and 8-track tape machines to give my music warmth. But the IK multimedia tape plugins as well as the Waves SSL ev2 can get you very close to a vintage analog sound.

I have the MPC Key 61..I bought it because my REN was at the end of its life cycle and an upgrade was in order. This was the most logical upgrade (for me) and it works the way I expected it to. So yes I love my MPC. Now as far as the sound quality (for me) it sounds good to me and yes I have owned many MPC's. I say this because I can make it sound anyway that I want it to sound and to me that is the best option of them all. The SE was not meant to baffle anyone and honestly its not that serious. In my opinion and observation they are re dropping all of the machines to include the ram and storage upgrades to prepare them for the newer plug in instruments and the 3.0 software...because its certainly coming. If you have an X already, do you need it? Actually its none of my business what you need or want so its totally subjective and will be categorized by the potential buyer. Don't get me wrong I get it I really do but this is what happens in technology. The X to me is the ultimate MPC and can only be improved with internal upgrades and software which is what they did so why not should be the question imo. The arguments of getting the sound right is totally subjective no matter who agrees to that. I say make it as transparent as possible so YOU can decide how it should sound at the end of the process but hey that's what works for me...See subjective. GREAT VIDEO Bro! I'm subbing since I enjoy your content.

I very much agree with you. I am not a collector of MPCs. I have too many other devices: synths (Keyboard and desktop), modular and other samplers and drum machines to have an MPC collection. If I found a decent price on a perfect sounding 2000 or Renaissance MPC it would definitely be really fun to have, but I do not need any unstable machines that I have to send to someone to repair. If you perform live you have to have something stable and also another that is a backup. Also I agree, the MPC X, ONE Live 2 all can sound great. All AKAI MPCs and Roland 808s need time spent really learning the equipment to make it sound the best it can sound, including the MPC 3000. This also goes for Synthesizers. I have several that if I take time away from them it takes me a full day to really get back into making patches that are worth recording. I never put my MPC away, never.

    • @KingHanma
      @KingHanma Год назад +2

@@VinylWave11 Excellent point! Absolutely right. Stability is more important than anything, but I'll add to that and play devils advocate. A company cant stop making product or they'll fold. I'm just addressing the argument of "Fix the bugs first before dropping new stuff." Not directed to you but you ignited the thought. For most that would be the next logical argument and many don't want to see new products if they are unhappy (in any way) whether big or small with what they have. I'm old school (51), I made a lot happen with less capabilities from manually splicing audio tape to having patch bays full of wires just to record 3 midi instruments and vocals to AMPEX456. And mastering after that! Don't get me started lol. So its kind of ridiculous to me to hear the commentary sometimes because NOTHING is garunteed to ever worked or sound perfect all the time once the process begin. Should be expected to a certain degree actually. Trust me when I say things are great at this point in time. The discussion over a piece being a problem because of how it sounds is crazy. Its an instrument. It need to be tuned to YOUR ear like a guitar. That makes it BEAUTIFUL. There is no rules to this. IF you say something is better one way or another or better over another thing again is subjective and a waste of time. Cherish what you have and make music. O and btw after all these years I'm just learning to have a better appreciation of synths. Having ADD I always found them a little difficult🤣. Enough with my soap box rants I just had to get that off my chest. I also understand its all just my opinion.

@@KingHanma I started off on music in the 1980s. I remember having to record on tape. I didn’t have anything as cool or advanced until my first DAW Logic Pro. Which I still sometimes gravitate toward instead of Ableton and my Push 2. Some equipment you just connect with and MPC One and X is that for me. And yes I think usually I have to learn to tune myself to the sound and the sound it makes to me. The great thing about music is we can use the older stuff, if it is still working, and we can also keep up with new options. Take guitars for example I have a Fender Strat that is my go to and new stuff just isn’t enticing. While I would love to have an MPC 60 I don’t need it because I personally need every peace of equipment I use to work together well. And more options in one device is just better for me. My studio space is kind of small. Some of my equipment has to go in a closet until I need it. It would be stupid of me to buy more MPCs and I try not to buy redundant instruments, I already have too many guitars and midi-keyboards.

I bought the MPC60ii new in 1991, soon bought an ASQ-10 as a backup sequencer, then I bought the MPC 2000xl SE1, - and recently I bought the MPC-1, basically so I don't need a laptop in my "therapy cell" / studio.
    I also still have my S950 x2, S3200xl x2, S3000xl (brand new, still boxed) and an S6000.
The newer machines are essentially just DAWs' wrapped up in their own controller and audio interface, - and there is nothing wrong with that.
So yeah, they ain't gonna sound like an old MPC, they'll sound much more like a DAW in a computer.
It was the limitations of the technology at that time that gave the old machines their character, and quirks, and all the manufacturers at the time had their own proprietary chips for sampling, and there was no WAV. standard, until the 2000xl, but that was still only a 16bit sampler at heart,
    - I imagine using WAV. etc, is a lot cheaper, and it does make life a lot easier.
Also, I'm not a fan of Akai using the old look on these new machines, personally, I find it to look a little cheap and tacky, - because they aren't the old machines,
    - just who are they trying to fool?
I'd love to see a simpler MPC, that was once again just aimed at,
    - sampling drums, breakbeats and powerful sequencing,
    - you know, just an instrument again, without all the extra bells and whistles that can get in the way,
    - like, I don't use any of the supplied sounds, only my own personal collection of sounds,
    - breakbeats, vintage drum machines, sub basses, everything else is old synthesizers.
Guess I should stress I don't do Hip-hop stuff, more Dark Electronica, kind of Meat Beat Manifesto stuff, but I grew up with Punk in the 70s, then Hip-hop and Electro, then the London Acid scene arrived, closely followed by Breakbeat and all its offshoots, and all my tastes changed, but I still have my favourite vinyl of the time, from heads like Duke Bootee, Marley Marl, EPMD, BDP, Hardnoise, Egyptian Lover, etc
    MPC once stood for
    - Midi Production Centre
    But now MPC means,
    Music production centre
So, I guess it's just what they call,
    - Logical Progression,
as now we can all have crystal clear, limitless stereo recordings,
    - that sound as sterile as fuck, but, personally, that's where 40yrs+ of collecting outboard comes in handy, as I'd recommend using external VCA compressors, and saturation devices to develop your own characters for these extremely powerful, modern machines.
The old machines certainly have their charms, but they are also very clunky when it comes to their operating systems.
Seriously though, if I could choose only one MPC out of them all, it would be the ONE, in black, together with a high quality audio interface for expanding the outputs to 32 channels...
    - love to ALL, feel no hate

This is interesting. But the majority of what is said here is sort of a false assumption. The MPC is known for its sound AND its workflow. Being a brain for your surrounding hardware (and software). The MPC's known not only for the sound but syncing multiple pieces with it...flawlessly (with some minor midi issues that usually can be worked out when troubleshooting. If you've never owned one, you could easily go off of hearsay from Legendary producers who will tell you the older MPC's sound different then the new ones. But coming from who owned a 4000 and sold it when the Ren came out, I loaded up my older programs to test the knock and it was just as good and sounded really solid (I really couldn't tell the difference and haven't regretted selling it once. And from the REN to the live 2 and now the X, the MPC ain't just selling junk. These machines are very versatile and tactile and the argument of exchanging a computer for a computer in an mpc shell, well the idea that I can take the live with me and travel with a machine without having to fire up a laptop and a mini keyboard and plug it all up together can be pretty dope and can get you in the practice of creating at any time. Idk that to me is kind of a huge deal now. Once you have that option its hard to knock it. And let's not forget the swing. The swing is still legendary and the 16 level velocities, pitch (which MPC started and everybody borrowed for their products) is a feature that is a must and still present. So you may not understand the hype and may not get why people love the MPC but it's to understand if you don't have one. And if you have one, and don't like it.. Sell it. There's thousands of people waiting to take it off your hands for the reasons I stated above. All love.

The MPC X SE etc. is the new school version of the MPC Ren without Digital I/O... Nice screen & stand alone, but I depend on Kontakt & Plugin's in the Akai Software to much to worry about that... I can understand the criticism. Why would I pay $2500 for a piece of stand-alone equipment only for it to sound like a DAW. DAWs are colorless. MPC's have had a tradition of coloring the sound out the box.
Yes, I know the newer MPC's have vintage mode emulations but other groove boxes on the market have them as well. Most groove boxes on the market are cheaper than the SE. You would get a much better bang for your buck investing in an alternative + high-end converters/preamps of your choice for a superior sound. I don't think the MPC X SE is a bad product per se but it's definitely over-priced for what it offers to the consumer.

The timing and converters were one thing.
What people never notice or talk about is how Roger Linn programmed “the accents!”
That’s what gives it that PUSH/ BUMP that’s so pleasant to the human ear.
    Akai never replicated that.
    That died when Roger quit.
That’s why 3k emulations never really worked.
It’s not just sound and timing.
When that loop is heading back to the one there’s this anticipation before that push that designers never got.

ALl of this created the MPC sound, PLUS the burr briwn converters they used in those early machines wear out.. The Tascam UH-7000 is discontinued now becuse of similar reasons.. The tech is better and more reliable now.. if they went backwards it would literally be impossible.. you'd need service manuals withyour equipment again

If high-end converters and preamps are added to the product, it will come at a significantly higher price. This could make it difficult for hobbyists and enthusiasts, who make up most of the Akai MPC user base, to afford it. I suppose one possible solution could be to create two versions of each MPC to cater to different price points.

  • @IsshmanGarcia

I dont understand why someone with a room full of vintage gear would complain about newer MPCs. Its almost like tryna discourage newbies from getting one, because YOU don't like the clean converters on the newer models. It most likely very hard to source older parts and expensive too. Why would a company want to go backwards in time? Risk vs Reward. Its 2023, most music doesn't need and obviously doesn't want that old MPC sound- if they did they would just use the vintage MPC's they already have sitting up on a desk in the corner of their studio. The newer models sound just like that- like newer models. Also, lets not assume that MPC's are exclusive to hip hop and RnB producers. Not everyone has a need for smacking drums on every piece of music being made on that machine. You want that old MPC sound: 1. Either buy an old model or 2. Slap a pitched down Sine wave under your Kick, compress the snot out of your snare's upper mids and throw some white noise on the master. There you go...free of charge.

the AKM converters in the current Gen MPC's are extremely high quality. The AKM factory that makes them burnt down, these MPC's they're releasing right now are all old stock, they've been had them in storage somewhere, because the AKM chips in them are no longer in production, and probably wont ever be back in production. 10 years from now people will be raving over the sound of these units, the DACs in them are known for being the highest quality achieved in modern times. It's best folks judge for themselves when it comes to "sound quality". Likely, the perceived difference in sound being reported by these producers is due to the old units having less dynamic range, since they had a lower bitdepth?
I use to think the sega genesis sounded like it came from the space age, folks have fond memories, but reality is what it is, you cant make a good track on the mpc, its not the DAC thats for sure.
People will be collecting these one day , specifically for the converters in them. I promise.
Its a bit crazy to watch a video about current MPCS" having bad sound when they literally have some of the best converters ever made in them...

Homage paid to the old machines but what made those magical moments is producers took those imperfections and limitations and made art with it. Back then when editing and sample chopping was done with no wave display it was all numbers and your two holes on the side of your dome. I remember when cats was making beats with a Akai s900 and wanted to clean it or gloss it up. Now it’s the opposite people say it’s to sterile clean or surgical. Well It’s easier to add grit vs taking it away if that’s your thing. My opinion it’s all about making original and magical moments on what ever you are using.. put your footprint on the machine.

I own the Akai MPC One and I own the Akai MPC X SE. I love both machines. It is a much better experience than working on a DAW, it sounds awesome. Unless you have actually used the MPC X or MPC X SE you would not know how it actually sounds. Also there are so many options with how you sample sound and effects. I am a producer who has made a successful career out of creating music. MPC is not a subscription service. However, I started out with working with VSTs and in DAW and while I do still use those for mastering and mixing, some of that was an absolute waste and pushes you towards sounding like everyone else...MIDI PACKS (DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THAT). MPC old and new has a great workflow. Old MPC which are fun to have are not stable often, having years of use, are very expensive to maintain if they break and really to be totally honest do NOT sound better. If you have the money to blow, go buy a MPC 2000 or a Renaissance if you can find one that works and doesn't mostly record popping and crackle noise and also you have the money to waste because most of those units are in collections with people who do have the money for a dust collector, because newsflash there are no new MPC 3000sor MPC 2000s or other older models. And I have used an MPC 2000 in studio, it was fine and sounded good but not better and the workflow is definitely not as good for my style. Not knocking the 2000, but it is just not better in my opinion.

The main problem is they are trying to push a machine that is based around a computer interface/interaction to people who are trying to get away from the computer and the general consumer can't make up their mind. Imagine if Moog or Sequential tried to do a virtual analog synth with a touch screen simply because people use VSTs. No one would accept that....but for some reason MPC users are accepting that type of product.
Akai simply doesn't understand the customer and is catering to the general consumer and fanboy rather than the musician. This is why Roger Linn doesn't want to do another drum machine (He was working on one based around MPE) The general MPC fanboy wouldn't understand what he was trying to do and dismiss it.

I own the MPC X (not the SE). Reason to buy was that I don't feel creative with a computer, and it has sooo many capabilities. I use it in stand alone mode only. Can't compare to earlier versions, but I have to say I works for me. As sampler, drum machine, and sequencer. I don't use the VSI expansions much, but I have a few and wasn't impressed. Also using these in a live setting with a keyboard connected is a pain - at least for me. Biggest issue I have is that the learning curve is very steep. At least for me.
You mention that companies should not fix what's not broken. I agree. Still I like the fact, that the Akai box is constantly evolving. That protects my investment in the HW. In case I would be interested in the new features, I can upgrade. Or not. Going the DAW direction you find yourself in a situation where you'd need to upgrade pc/mac for all sorts of reasons.
I think the SE looks cool (not cooler, but cool). But I'd never upgrade for the design, extra memory and HD space.

Before commenting, perhaps should consider the engineering which goes into building product of such stature. Then perhaps it would be fair to comment on knowing WHY the sound of sacrificed.

The MPCs from 4000 on back ( 60 60II 3000 2000 2000xl and 4000) all have a auto limiting function on the outputs that brought up the transients and an eq envelope that made the drums smack harder. The ensoniq and emu early gear had a similar eq signature from just the limitations of the units and trouble dealing with aliasing effects plus analog filter chips. Crazy thing is Maschine even though it’s been held as a modern clinical sound has an easy way to dial in these signatures and save them as presets, However the EA Skis and Jermaine Dupris already have the 3000/60 etc…. And analog gear to give their sounds the umph it needs to be competitive on their level . I recommend if your going to use the mpc X you would benefit from purchasing an economical 90s mixer ( ie yamaha rm800 the Ramsa studio Sonic’s and the like ) or use Maschine or FL to develop your own sounds as you go. I used the 2k classic and FL as a sound design and library for years. Much like the Maschine library. I also stored sounds on an emu E4 .

It really depends on the style of music you are doing. It’s all subjective. But the fact is that the MPC 3000 is the best sounding MPC. Akai will never remake that. i think you look at this from the wrong perspective. the sound is important thats clear because we are producing music. so the modern MPCs got the "clear" sound which is perfect for you. if you need it dirtier than make it dirtier. sample from another MPC or what ever source. I for example use sometimes external gear for resampling back to my MPC. the point is that the sound should stay the way you designed it and stay always under your control. thats why i think thats not bad. I saw a guy sampling vinyl with the sp2400 and sampling from the SP to his MPC x or live.

I think the disconnect is when we speak of this "modern MPC sound." People purchased gear back then because of the sound. So if we are talking about an MPC, it had a Roger Linn sound. Fast forward to today, companies are going for that transparent sound to shape it the way you like it as you mentioned. You are right, it not a bad thing at all, except when you are a company known for your sound, why would you change it.

Most pro productions are going to be routed through your favorite outboard processors and/or a DAW anyway. the focus on A/D converters in this "all in the box gear" is way over-rated. These boxes are great for stimulating musical ideas in ways that I might not have ever considered or come up with. Bottom line is that it sounds great and if I never told anyone what equipment I was producing on...I doubt that many would be able to guess.

That’s why they have the vintage mode on the new MPC right? The old technology can’t touch the new point blank.

I believe there is some difference in sound. But they are differences that are not noticeable to the average listener, differences that only the producers themselves can distinguish. Technically speaking, the new MPC is superior, even in terms of sound. What people like about the old MPC is a certain compression/distortion, it's a bit like Vinyl vs CD. If the producer is skilled and knows how to work with sound, he can make the new mpc sound however he wants.

Remeber it’s just the special edition of the X - more RAM more memory - extra bundles and the retro cover - it’s not supposed to be a new machine.
If it was it would be called something else 😅

Absolutely on point. I realized that since day 1 I bought a new mpc(live 2) they are focusing on the wrong things. Im sure they are spending fortunes for marketing and everything they need to do is build the right MPC, sounding good, good built quality , then everything else. And then all the big producers gonna use it and gonna promote it for them. Without akai spent a cent for marketing. Wrong focus Akai

I had the 1k, 2500 and the 5k. I ended up with Maschine Plus. I can honestly say that each MPC did sound different. I loaded some of the same beats and they had something missing or flat sounding. The MPlus does sound different than an MPC, but i love my M+. I clicked with it almost instantly. The workflow to me was better. I have outboard gear and analog synths for everything else. Personally I’ll never buy another Akai product. I have everything I need with my gear now.

It’s quantity over quality. There’s way more bedroom/@ home consumers making music than ever b4. There catering to a younger demographic that don’t know & it’s not their fault for the most part. They don’t know & then they don’t know that they don’t know.

All Akai had to do was give consumers the Vst software instrument of today but keep the analog converter's with the option of 8bit, 12bit,16bit, 24, 32 or whatever so it can be switched manually inside a main menu page

... this is eerily similar to the vintage synth/keyboard vs digital synths using analog modeling/virtual analog sound engines argument. As an example, Roland gets grilled heavily for producing keyboards, drum machines, and grooveboxes digitally emulating many of their legacy keyboards and drum machines. They appear to not be interested in making any new analog pieces and quite a few aficionados out there say that the emulations are not close enough to the originals. I've read similar comments about earlier Yamaha MOTIF's sounding "warmer" than their new workstations such as later MOTIF-series, the Montague, and MOD-X series.
I'm not particularly sure what problem the OP found with the Akai MPC X SE... does he have one? Has he used any of the Akai products, past or present? Is he saying that NI's Maschine somehow has better sound quality than the MPC's?
