- This edition of ‘Off The Cuff’ saw ‘Former Pakistan Diplomat, Husain Haqqani’ in conversation with ThePrint Chairman & Editor-in-Chief, Shekhar Gupta. India and Pakistan must first become friends before they can try and solve their prickly disputes, Haqqani said in conversation with Shekhar Gupta. Haqqani also appreciated India’s foreign relations under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying his efforts can bring about a vision for the stewardship of the region without China being the only dominant power.

At 28:28 Haqqani is talking about talks and friendship giving examples of major nations like France and Germany. But the issue here is that Pakistan's problem with India is religeous and not geo political. Pakistan was created on hatred towards Hindus. Pakistan is actively involved in Asymmetrical strategies like supporting terrorism against rival countries. It's a country controlled by religious extremist groups in conjunction with its military. To summarize, talks takes place between civilized countries. Not with extremist and military states like Pakistan.

The France and Germany land dispute cited by Haqqani saab is not congruent with the scenario between us and Pakistan...Pakistan is afraid of India's supremacy if differences are sorted out because of our size of territory and economy.
If India invest heavily in its military (which is happening to some extent and i think in next few years that will happen more) then pakistan will behave. Before that it is all time pass. Peace almost always comes from a place of strength.
They will keep sending terrorists, keep inciting kashmiri muslims, keep on planning for next kargil while saying we need dialogue for peace etc and shit like that.
India need to remove article 370 and 35A for Kashmir and see what happens. I think that will happen in a year or two year anyways. Once that happens we will be on a path to peace. Unless india integrates kashmir economically with rest of india it is very difficult and after removing 370 an 35A it will start the integration process and long term peace.
Haqqani is great. Always methodical, logical in his thinking.

Haqqani surely gives logical arguments, but with all respect how come all Pakistani officials who have ended their govt jobs and/or have been exiled suddenly start speaking logically and write facts in their "books" (that they keep promoting), but speak blasphemy when holding govt jobs. Anyhow, fair talk by him now, post exile, although few elephant points he missed -
1. Pakistan's political/military system bombs, shoots, infiltrates, conspires against citizens of other countries in the world. It practically grooms terrorists, in the process jeopardizing lives of its own innocent citizens - you should rectify that first
2. You say, Pakistan teaches distorted history that says "India is our greatest enemy" - you should rectify that first!
3. Pakistan harasses Indians who travel to see their ancestral land and you speak of tourism!
4. Pakistan created menace in state of Kashmir and has been bombing it to this date since 70 yrs, brainwashing innocent Pakistanis to cross border and commit suicide in Kashmir, - you need to brace the truth. These killings in Kashmir should be ended for once and all, allow willing Indians, if any to stay or leave the country by choice, and electrify the complete Western border so Indians can be safe, earn and live in peace in their own beautiful houseboats. Hope to see sports and literature competitions in Kashmir. Will be fab to see Chennai v/s Kashmir in IPL!
India talked trade for decades while Pakistan threw bombs blasts in return, for 70 yrs!! and is still continuing. Its audacious of Haqqani to advocate trade on one hand while have bombs ready in other hand.
Now, that finally India has stopped all trade and US withdrawing free aid and China eyeing when to take Pakistan's assets, Mr. Haqqani is NOW remembering Indian trade which you threw in the dustbin when you were in the government.
This enlightenment talk by Haqqani is much more required in Pakistan than in India.

We need great people like hussain haqqani to lead us in Pakistan. We need secularism , development, progress , diversity and pluralism. We can't be good Muslims unless we do improve ourselves in terms of advancement in all spheres of life. We don't have any permanent enemy and instead the resources should rather be spent fully on health , education and literacy and technical skills , sanitation ,rule of law , human capital development , good governance , right management of resources and ending of corruption , unemployment and poverty . We shouldn't be Indian centric and instead there should be strong bilateral relations for boosting trade , commercial activity and cultural exchange so that harmony and peace can be etched here for the smooth development and progress towards the actual goal .

This could be seen as an intended uncharitable comment, but it is not.
The less than professional production standards of the filming, the ever busy Shekhar Gupta sorting things out from the stage all added together to give me the flavour of actually participating in the event, rather than watching the filmed version.
Having said that, it will soothe the viewers eyes to see Shekhar Gupta attending his duties of a host , and doing just that.
Lastly, even if Shekhar Gupta knew the people asking the questions and even if a majority of them were from his company, The Print there was no need for the audience to know that because it gave the impression of stage managed audience questions.

Partition of India was the right idea. There are total of 350 Million muslims in pakistan and bangladesh combined. Add that to 200 million muslims in India would make 550 million muslims in undivided in India which is ~40% of Indian population which would cause huge problems to India

Is it possible to "reimagine" Pakistan, when the very foundation of Pakistan is shaky and unstable?
When the foundation so weak, it has little choice but to dismantle Pakistan and rebuilt it again with right values imbedded in the constitution. One cannot do a patch up job to a foundation. It will eventually collapse no matter how much reimagining one does. The very name Pakistan means "the nation of the pure" and this implies every other nation is impure. In 1947, Pakistan was formed as a new country because Jinnah/Iqbal/Liaqqat believed they could not live with the "impure" Hindus. This is a very fascist concept and any fascist nation has never survived forever. They eventually destroy themselves.
