Steven Wilson - Refuge (Lyric Video)

- Lyric video by Lasse Hoile.
Inspired by the plight of Syrian refugees, “Refuge” builds from the hushed beauty and pathos of the song section to an instrumental apex in which Paul Stacey’s guitar, Mark Feltham’s harmonica and Steven Wilson’s synth solo unite in epic glory, before dropping back down to a haunting aftermath. "Refuge" is a powerfully intense and cinematic highlight from the forthcoming album To the Bone.

This is not pop, this is genius. The most talented artist of his generation.
Pop and genius aren't mutually exclusive
Most talented artist of all the generations since 1977! :-)
Most talented artist of all generations since 1977!
And you are the most ignorant person of your generation
@@MrShahid0072 Why, because he might be right?
I am 67 and listening music maybe 57 years, but this is something more than the music Steven. If it's P.Tree, Blackfield or SW, I can not find one bad song. And I listen your music really every day. Thanks a lot.
Yes Sir!
Oh yes. Steven never miss. Only the last album is hard to swallow.
Agree Ivan,I listen to Steven Wilson every day! (67 also)
I just found him recently- his solo stuff - it's out of this world insanely awesome - 1st found him.a few months back in Porcupine tree then recently Blacklane ( I recognized both his vocals and his style ) then was delighted to discovered it was him - This man is so darn talented , I am lost for words ....💙
Ivan you are 100% correct. this guy is just something else. He’s just a genius and makes our lives more fulfilled. He simply cannot make bad music. take care..and carry on enjoying Steven Wilson.
The point where the harmonica solo blends into the guitar is terrific.
My favorite part too :)
Me too
Absolute perfection!
Yes, love it so so much
I love it all. The piano as well. Oh, I could cry just thinking about it.
"My dear wife, and my children of God the borders where already drawn for us"
I don't know how Steven can sing those lyrics without cry...
Too much feelings, it breaks me
The way he sings those lyrics is so powerful, so emotional.
Me too. This rips me up.
S.Wilson does not make tracks for the general people, he makes tracks for other musicians, only few understand the depth of the quality of music he delivers. ♥️🖤
As a musician...let me tell you it's not that rich or complicated...enjoyable yes. Not difficult to replicate or imagine. Jimi Hendrix or King Crimson is rich and complex ...musicians go wtf? And if you listen to Miles Davis ...that's for musicians.
Ditto
I feel it all, so deeply.
So you are saying you'd easy write a song like this? It's not a band he made it so. @@neoaureus
i'm Syrian, i've lived it all..and still. much love from Syria
Just heard this ... love back to you
You still sound like the Steven Wilson in the past. Really "Nothing's changed". People have criticized you over making pop songs. I reckon you should do what you like because it comes from heart. That's what I learned from you Steven Wilson. Thank you.
nikhil mahale yup....He is The Master....wish every human being could atleast listen to his songs once
Smarth Mahajan rightly said brother.
People have critiqued him for making pop songs because they didn't know that he actually wanted to make a Pop song and obviously he made a good one
Really Steven Wilson is the most underrated musical genius.Every other great band or musician have a signature musical style and sense. But Wilson Sir took it to another level.Every song is different.Especially this new album.Full experimentation and expression. Can be regarded as the one of the greatest diversive album of the musical world.
True combination of jazz, progressive and pop culture.Havent thought that a musician of the progressive world to include a bollywood dance!!!You are a god Sir!!!
"My dear wife and my children of God, the borders were already drawn for us!"
I've lost the count of number of times I've listened to this song, but this line still brings me goosebumps!
real tears
Not only the line, but the delivery and those tribal-ish drums kicking in. Having goosebumps when THINKING abot it. Check out the Live-version on Home Invasion. It doubles down the Intensity, at least.
Same for me... And when he say '' Here i am''...
I cry just about every time I listen. The message hits hard. I live in the U.S. and see so many people subject to racism for being an "immigrant" or person of color in general. It sickens me. Enrages me. People are dying every day over trivial bullshit. We need to come together as one race, and that is human.
@@MorgueRat totally agree with you
real music.
to the bone.
to the heart.
to the soul.
Still just 2 AM in India and this song will remain the Best thing to happen all day!
Hey man 4 AM here, cheers from Québec! ;)
since when did you steppedinto our matters quebec?
What are you talking about?
I just learned recently that the French got Quebec for making peace with the British in India and acceding their territory to them.
Hey a year later i just did the same thing. It's around 2AM now in India. 🙌
This is going to be that song that gives you chills when you see them live.
... you mean one of the many Songs...
It gives me the chills already, more chills and I'm KO. I hope to see them live on the next tour.
@TheNonArtist
same as routine
already got tickets ?
I wil cry like a baby for sure....
This ain't pop this is magic!
Chris Wellstead magic??
Totally agree with you Chris, amazing track!!
This song is another trip to universe :)
it isn't pop anyway. That's rock
Its pronounced " poop"
The guitar is literally crying. What a tone!!
Being a Syrian and a big fan of Steven Wilson while listening to this song is a lot of feelings.
Thank you Steven, and thanks for your amazing performance in Istanbul, I was amazed there.
All the love ❤
Would you please decode what the children were saying at the end of this song ?
shahi derky Amen my friend. So good to hear
Respect, i hope all the Syrian refugee's find homes peace and friendship, i send my heartfelt love to all
Rym Baccara the kids are praising Hafez Assad (Bashar's dad and the original dictator) as the symbol of Arabs revolution (against imperialism), it is something we had to say as kids in schools in the 80s and 90s. I am not sure why SW included it here.
For those interested and/or speak Arabic, the exact words are:
حافظ اسد، رمز الثورة العربية
Eyad Said I think I'm hearing something different here. Mostly about Gaza (Palestine) and not Syria. But maybe I'm wrong. Because to me it sound like he's saying "غزه تبقى أمه عربيه حره" which I'm not able to give an exact translation in English.
This is not music this is something else
hari govind entirely something else!
This isn't music, it's an experience
It's not music it is my Savior.
No! THIS EXACTLY IS MUSIC!
inserts "Thank You".gif
Almost 3 years now and i never get enough of the harmonica solo, it just blows my soul every time (as the entire song as well) :')
Same here, I click on the video regularly to listen stunning first 3 min and 13 sec which functions also as a build up for the harmonica solo... then I get wild with the two more solos, finish the song and do it again.
With love from my war torn, but ever hopeful and smiling Syria ❤️ thank you Steven 🙏
Best song on the album and one of his best ever imo. Absolutely beautiful, epic and cathartic.
PositiveLastAction oh boy believe me, once you hear to the bone you will see... Detonation is the monster.
Alan Josué Gama Ramírez considering that the album apparently leaked everywhere, there's a good chance he heard it already and just prefers this
E43 May be the case, also was your favorite song on this álbum mate?
Alan Josué Gama Ramírez Refuge or Song of I so far, they're pretty much neck and neck for me. Haven't heard anything that was leaked beyond the title track since I haven't had the luck of finding the rest of it
E43 well if you Want it Just let me know :)
Anyyone who loves Steven Wilson goes to heaven...
Giannis Musicman just by hearing his music
I'd better start to hate him then.;)
Leave religion out of this, he is much more than some fabricated story.
Maria Diaz why you hate him?
Ravinder Gaba
Hate him? I don't hate him. In fact he and PT had been my favourite artists for some time. This album is mostly a disappointment, but maybe it's just a phase.
I just don't want to go to heaven. Must be a very boring place.
Doesn't matter the "style", Steven always puts his heart into his music. From the metal to the psych, to the jazz to the blues to the post prog to the pop. Steven is incredible.
So far this album is shaping up truly great...I don't get it why people are hating. Can't wait to hear it full.Long live steve.
anish sengupta because it sounds a bit like pop
I thought prog music lovers are more open minded. They like to venture in new direction. This album is pop he said it before.....why the surprise.....But however pop this is...This is pretty damn good.
anish sengupta well i would also prefer to have another prog rock album but i dont get why you have to hate.
Most people who like progressive music, aren't crazy about pop. Simple as that. I like complex, absorbing music, that takes me on a winding twisting adventure. A sonic journey. This is not doing that, for me. at least. I certainly have no hate at all. SW has given me over two decades of awesome music, and owes me nothing. I truly hope this release does well, and am happy that he is following his muse.
I am not hating...🙄. I just don't like to label myself with a particular genre...I like music in general. If I start to hate any particular genre then I am missing out a huge amount of music. And that's a huge loss for me. It's my opinion.
the harmonica solo got me
Dumalandrops seeing the harmonica player made me want to shave my head
...followed by the guitar and finally a screaming Moog...THAT definitely got me!!!
The harmonica player worked with talk talk in Colour of spring, a masterpiece album released in 1986
I didn´t know, but that´s the first album I´ve linked the harmonica sound to, while listening. That´s Talk Talk´s best work, by far...
Dumalandrops it hits you! Brilliant
as a syrian refugee i salute your amazing art and work, just thank you for doing what you do.
Helo zaw2ak!
I was going to buy the album, But now...
I'm definitely going to buy the album. Steven Wilson never disappoints.
Worth the buy. The vinyl sounds amazing. Great recording
Best album i got, great music
" My dear wife, and my children of God, the borders were already drawn for us " really hit me! How he's chosen music over a family and children and will never know what could've been. ( as spoken in the interview ) ALSO THOSE FALSETTOS THOUGH! AMAZING!
Lol
This comment didnt age well, considering he has a family now
Pop, prog, jazz
Who cares?
Music!!! Without labels
The best i have heard from this album. Touching and beautiful. This is the SW i love more.
IKR!!!
Oh, just cut the bullshit, will you? The songs like this one are the reason we love SW.
I do like the others, but I think SW dominates this kind of songs to the point he can only make masterpieces.
I agree man. The emotion conveyed in this song is what I am used to from SW and PT. The rest of the album, while solid, doesn't go as far for me. It's an intangible.
The three staged rocket solo involving Paul Stacey’s guitar, Mark Feltham’s harmonica and Steven Wilson’s synth solo gets me every time...I can't help but raising my hands into the air! EPIC!!!!
Divided by nation but united by Steven Wilson....CHEERS MATES..
Well said mate!
Steven knows how to blend humanity and music like so few can these days. The feels are real.
This song is pure PERFECTION
The first time i heard it i was forcing myself not to cry, then the guitar solo made it hard for me not to. When i heard the harmonica i broke down.
So flipping dipping true
That harmonica part just gets me every time. BOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM
GODHELP US I THOUGHTS ITS A FRIKING GUITAR
Those harmonica, guitar and synth solos ufffffff
Literally one of the most angelic voices in all of music. 2:40-3:16. So good
The solo, oh my God. Sooo sooo good, sooo blues-y
yep love it
Which one?
Steven Wilson is beyond music.
Crying, literally crying!!! So in love with it!!!
He really knows how to make a song flow through you. Goosebumps and tears, what an odd combination...
The Return of the King
Birtan Demirel There may come a day... when the strength of Steven Wilson fails... and the foundations of prog come crashing down!
... but it is not this day.
Birtan Demirel Well said!
So You Say!
WHAT SAY YOU?
But if you ask me... Here I am.
That line gives me chills.
The harmonica solo is just perfection.
This song gets better every time I listen to it.
This track needs multiple listens to be able to appreciate all the layered, intricate sounds. Love it!
This is Deep....I don't care in which genre the world puts you, your album and this song into... But this is the most Brilliant song on this album..For Me.
Coldplay and now him, using color powders after visiting India.
"This is a happy music festival, but I'm not a happy music person" he said. We love your songs here.
Finally Steven Wilson driving home.
best harmonica integration i ever heard. wonderful.
After that my dear wife part, I had such uncomfortable feeling. Goosebumps all over. Although its 94 degree out I felt the cold
Best song on the album
They say music can alter mood and talk to you, they are right.
This song is so much better that permanating. I like the fact that there are songs like this on the new album and it's not pop songs only. I also like that he is experimenting more with electronic sounds.
I love this and Permanating
but especially Same Asylum As Before
The solo on synths from 4:22 to 4:55 is the best I've ever heard. Build up to the solo is a climax in itself and then the 33 seconds say it all. I think Steven Wilson is a genius in music.
The mixing on all Steven's albums is so bloody brilliant. Jfc.
I am man enough to say that I LOVE Steven Wilson with all my soul. Pink Floyds Time had been my favorite song for as long as I can remember. But the first time I heard this it hit me VERY HARD and has become part of me. Thank you Steven for your gift and sharing your very essence with the world...you are a TREASURE!!!!
Best part of the song between 0:00 and 6:42
Cristobal Croxatto Hahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha, you're right
Cristobal Croxatto oh....so U think the first and last seconds suck?! I see how it is...
Cristobal Croxatto ste men jajajajajaja eri chileno wn?
+TOAOM123 LOLOLOL
sacheiiiiiiiiii hahahahaha
The screams of the MOOG are lifting my soul high above the clouds! The way the solos of the three different instruments are taking over from eachother is bloody brilliant!!! I don't think that has ever been done before.
Real worth of an artist is known only when they are gone. Don't criticize Steven like people did to Chester Bennington and Linkinpark. They are artists and are free to express their music in which ever type of sound they want. Steven Wilson, no doubt, has given us the best music possible and he'll keep doing that till the music he writes comes from his heart (and I am sure he's not a person who will stop listening to his heart no matter what).
This guy's talent for great music and lyrics is just insane.
One of the best songwriters in music history.
All in this song (lyrics, images and the name) remember me an interview where Steven says that he "sacrificed" family for music. I feel this song very personal, and for me is the key to understand new directions and experiments is his music. It's all about music!! try new things, sounds, ways to do. Make music requires conviction, commitment and new ideas to contribute.
and one last thing : I dont give a damn about all those labels, pop, prog, jazz, rock, classic anything that purists like to put in labelled drawers... this timeless music is way above all of this. needless to talk about the beautiful lyrics.. Masterpiece.
One of the greatest songs I've heard in a long time.If I had any talent, I would of wrote something like this. I think it's beautiful.
With each video from the new album, I become more and more excited to hear this album in full. I can't wait to sit in my living room, lights down, listening this in 5.1, all while covering up in multi layers of blankets from the chills that will be running down my spine.
Sounds Perfecto
2.1 but yes , amazing . Just built cinema room , this is go to music for really audio heaven and testing.
This sent major shivers down my spine. The solo section left me speechless.
Man that's a fucking masterpiece bro
Rait dat
It is dude, fucking brilliant!!
Yea, when the drums kick in the power is over the top. Steve creates such imagery. Can't wait to see this done live.
John Nicholson I’m from Vancouver. He came to us once a few years back, and I was in awe. His emotional songs, raven, watchmaker, routine. Those were the ones that got me. This song will easily be added to the list of emotional live songs.
Cant thank Mr. Wilson enough to create one masterpiece after another. I will take his tunes to my grave. Living is such a pleasure with such songs
I will never understand why Steven Wilson is so underrated. I hope he continues doing his magic as long as he can so that we can enjoy it :)
the drumming in the end reminds me of gavin and the solo, oh my god!.
My God, Steven . . .
. . . . . . what a climb. The ascent of your heart, upon a mountain of refuge. (I've been in the music biz for Decades. Without doubt, that was The best "harmonica" solo I have EVER experienced. The bar has been reset. I just heard . . . a harmonica cry.) I must go now. A part of me just escaped. I need to find my breath.
From those who stuck by the sound we hoped for to those premature critics, this should put Wilson back on track.
I listened to and enjoyed Blackfield, I listened to and loved Porcupine Tree, I listened to and admired the Steven Wilson band (how else can I call them? ) and then came Refuge...... what can I say. Is this the best ever written song ever?
I have been listening to Steven Wilson for years now, and I can never wait for his new stuff. What an emotive genius.
Crying as I listen, so emotive and full of pain. A true beauty.
One of the best solos I've ever heard! The level of emotion reminds me of some of the solos of David Gilmour.
The music makes me cry. These Harmonics...
Pure poetry embedded in musical notes.. He’s a genius
As a syrian who lives in france now after living 5 years of war in Aleppo, and almost 9 years of not seeing my family this song flahsed my life in front of my eyes ... I have tickets for your concert in lyon on may 2025 and I'm not sure if i want to listen to this live or no, it might be the most emotional moment of my life in good or bad way ...
But thank you from the bottom of my heart
This song cleanse my soul.Every word, every line is heart touching.Steven just poured his heart in this song.
Steven always talked about the feeling of the music rather than technicalities. This song is perfect example of that.
Love you steven.Keep it up.
Wilson is a genius. All be it a very somber and depressing person. His music is beautiful.
King Crimson, Steve Hackett and Steven Wilson. Musicians that blend together so well. Interchangeable. Even Pineapple Thief is borrowing musicians from these three.
These are the kind of songs Steven shines the most at.
Okay, this is a Steven level song! This is amazing!
My favorite song on this album, hands down, no contest.
Can't help but hear Talk-Talk with Mark Feltham on the harmonica, and the guitar solo has a real nice Steve Rothery/Dave Gilmour vibe :)
Can't believe what I am hearing. 10 Years I didn't hear any new music from this man. Today I just decided to go back in time and listen to Steven Wilson. Man, you are a musical phenomenal. You still shivered my skin with your composition and songs. God bless you Steve. Thanks for keeping up this great music going on. Love from Saudi Arabia.
This song is sooooooooooo goooooood. Have listened to it like 100 times already... cant wait for the live HD version. Always preferred his live versions to the studio ones, since PT days...I think I am finally starting to appreciate his solo career..Its much more diverse and richer in terms of quality and breadth of material...So, Mr. Wilson has touched upon prog rock, prog metal, jazz, pop... what's next?? Can't wait...
This song is many times better live. Album version didn't had any effect on me, but live version from "Home Invasion" finally clicked with me.
This is not pop. This is amazing music.
Music units us 🤘🏻 Greeting from a Syrian Refugee 🇸🇾
The buildup is incredible.
I haven't done much in life but I pride myself on being able to see Steven Wilson perform live
As someone who was a refugee, I'd like to say first that I am glad I know Steven Wilson's music and second that this is truly a more dedicated song for refugees than the many pop-driven "this-one-is-for-all-the-refugees-around-the-world-make-some-noise" songs.
hell... this is no pop song... I love this album and love everything that Steve makes...
Steve is a Legend!!!!!
His ability to catch a mood or a feeling in a few words is...awe-inspiring.
This song is dedicated to the one I truly love and always will . Here I am my dear love, borders were already drawn for us . I'd love to see you sometime soon , will you give back to me now what you stole.
S. Wilson is a genius !!
One of the few older musical artists alive and still growing. Revelatory to see live. Went from 'OK I'll go to Steven Wilson' to 'I think I can make the next show 150 miles away - screw work!'.
I have to say I didnt expect to enjoy the harmonica, but it devoured me..... great stuff. Cant wait for the album
Never heard of Mark Feltham before, but HOLY MOTHER OF GOD that harmonica. Reminds me of Chris Wilson of Paul Kelly & the Coloured Girls. Overpowering.
Feltham played this song live at The Royal Albert Hall for one of Steven Wilson's TTB gigs in 2018. Absolutely mind-blowing to see live. Literally shivers down the spine stuff.
"Inspired by the plight of Syrian refugees". I re-listened to the song after reading that. Holy shit, what a hard hitting song. The drums really set the tone of inevitability. Sort of marching toward doom. Looks like one of SW's greats.
The best ProgRock record in 2017. "Refuge" reflects the situation of the refugees in a brilliant way, so emotional and beautiful as well. "Pariah" and the amazing voice of Ninet Tayeb - a masterpiece of all time. Thanks to Steven Wilson for this wonderful record.
Moved me to tears. Best song so far. Really a triumph! The harmonica and guitar solos/plights... And the ending... :')
I'm in gear heaven looking at all that equipment!!!
