    It’s crazy how the Switch port made this game basically perfectly. So many quality of life changes and additional content, but most importantly, it fixed the biggest flaw with the game by adding an orchestrated ost.

      I'm still gutted though they made the switch complete version for ps4 and its resolution and graphics takes a big hit yet it was on ps4 first. At least they reduced the price I guess. Would of been crazy if they asked for full price.

      @@Kennosuke88 Yeah, looking at the footage from 2:00-3:10, you can really see what you're missing if you get XI S. The original looks incredible with the lighting and shadows. Really fine detail. I don't own a PS4, so it's Switch or PC for me, and if it's more or less similar graphics for either of my choices, I'm taking the portable option. I gather you can't even buy the original on Steam anymore.

    I downloaded the demo onto my Switch to try it out, and HOLY GOD it’s letting me play so much of the game right off the bat. I’ve been playing 3 hours of it, and I kept going, “I know it’s going to cut me off at some point,” but it kept going. I found out it lets you play 10 HOURS of the game. And I can transfer my save from the demo when I buy the game.
    I know as soon as I’m able, I’m giving this game my money. It’s a fun as heck and it is amazing how generous the demo was.

    I also think the weakest element of DQXI is the OST but not necessarily because it's only MIDI. The real problem is that it feels like the game has 10 themes to choose from for almost every area and/or cutscene.

      @decusq 5 лет назад +7

      I agree! There are moments where i wish the story was complimented by the amazing orchestra from the 8th game in the series. Where some of the more emotional parts are slightly tinged by the lack of a good tune not complimenting the scene but more MIDI.

    Thanks Clemps! I'm 80 hours in and alot of your thoughts on the story telling match my own. One piece also came to mind for me during my playthrough (coincidentally started watching the series in July). Every little "chapter" in the game is full of little tropes that have just enough of a twist to slightly surprise you and it's all so well paced and executed that it never drags its feet unlike so many other JRPGS. This is slowly making its way to becoming one of my favorite JRPGS along with FFIX, FFX, P4, and TTYD.

      actually, their "points" are weak, that's the point the OP is making. It's a matter of opinion and human nature's tendency to jump on the latest trend of what's popular (or not). There's nothing inherently bad or boring with tyrn bases rpgs. Persona 5 comes to mind as being as engaging as any turn based rpg I've played.

      I don't explicitly disagree with it, most RPG fans that love classic turn-based gameplay will always play something like this if it's done right. I find that it needs a bit of a twist to be truly interesting, like SMT's Press Turn Battle, Grandia's ACT/COM system, or Growlanser's mix of strategy and realtime combat. I just can't seem to get into a game that's turn-based without that extra mechanical flair adding a layer of depth to planning. A more bare-bones system isn't bad, and at the end of the day it's just personal preference, but I do think that games that offer such a twist without sacrificing the turn-based combat (again, like SMT) benefits a bit more than not

    • @BrickBreakerXX
      @BrickBreakerXX 5 лет назад +5

      Honestly is there a better method of controlling multiple characters with precision in a battle? Sure there's real time strategy games but to get good at those you have to hone your skills to a mirror sheen before you could compare to the control you can get turn-based. Ever since FF12 Squeenix keep trying to make the Final Fantasy games more real-time and just makes you control one character with the other characters controlled by AI or make you put pre-loaded actions into them.
      I think the problem with turn-based combat isn't the system itself, it's just how commonplace it is because it works so well for a lot of long-form group focused stories.

    • @darksaint0124
      @darksaint0124 5 лет назад +2

      The problem I find with the argument is the titles that Clemps used. One company made a turn based game that he likes so that same company should only make turn based games with the franchise that is primarily used to innovate on battle systems? One of the hallmarks of Final Fantasy is that the battle system always changes with every numbered game. It's not like Square Enix doesn't make games with turn based combat. I mean most of his examples are Square Enix games, so how can this be a problem with this company if most of the turn based games he uses as examples are games made by this company? This is why other studios should have been used as examples as the argument doesn't have a solid foundation.

    Playing it on PC right now with an orchestra music mod and finding it very good even tho i'm not at all a fan of basic JRPG combat system, but hard mode and an ability to change party member mid-fight is adding enought depth to the gameplay - and everything else is great anyway, so i'm really enjoing it right now. My expirience with the DQ is finishing 8 on ps2 and 5 on DS - they're fun but random encounter system and fairly basic combat wear me down a bit.
    While story is basic, it's not bad, it's just 'pure', kinda like something like John Wick is a simple pure action movie, this is a pure fairy tale adventure. Will watch your video when i'm finished with the game!

      Well, basic JRPG combat system is kinda dull. It's not that "turn-based games" are dull as a whole - it's just that turnbased mechanics without any positioning is kinda too restricted. Bosses - yeah, usually bosses have enought interesting attacks that it's engaging, but regular battles are usually a chore. DQ 11 is a bit better with it's hard mode and ability to change party members mid-battle wich adds to the depth, but tbh most classic JRPGs battle systems are very boring exept in a boss fight.
      Turn-based games with positioning tho? That's a whole other story and probably my favorite battle mechanics (if balanced well)

      old gerko I disagee, turn based requies a level of strategy when it comes to moves that make regular battles passable with one move later on.
      Let's put it this way; If your strong enough to reach a boss in said game you're usually strong enough to one-hit every regular encounter.

      Nah I agree with jrpghero
      While you do have points on older games we're talking about turn based as a whole.
      I don't agree with it being too restrictive cause that's a broad statement; I could argue that action rpg's are too restrictive in making me button mash with not strategy as how to handle bosses and so on.
      Because turn base in an opinion and while switching out party members on the fly is something I can agree on (makes persona 5 all the more fun) I also have to use p5 as a point where even without that (cause it's optional) you can make an amazingly fun and challenging rpg with turn based, positioning system of no. I agree with clemps no matter what other people say; it's timeless.

      DutchPlayss i found an excellent method that meant I never had to grind. Form two parties. First, beat the game with one party, the one that has your protagonist. Then, beat the other 4 characters stories with just their party. If you do this, you’ll never have to grind, just so long as you have a strategy.

      @@gilgamesh310 Umm his point still stands. He mentioned she wasn't in control as well. The reason it was so weird is because they didn't need her mind control to be like that, the forced sexual body language etc. They could have just made her the monsters personal guard, but no. It had to be made sexual on a character that is nothing like that. Then throw in the fact she unlocks the "allure" skill tree which is completely out of Jades character. It's clear they just wanted a character to be sexual, to please a certain audience, and it didn't matter if it made sense. They could have chosen any number of amazing ways to tell Jades side story, but no. They went with sex slave, how thrilling!

      @@trashtv6138 The issue I took was when he made out that it being consistent with her character was relevant. It obviously wasn't, seeing as the whole point of mind control was that they're not in control. I'm not too familiar with the Allure abilities, because I haven't gotten far beyond that point. I just find this argument that it's 'out of character' to be irrelevant here.

    • @gallantblade1825
      @gallantblade1825 3 года назад

      @@gilgamesh310 The issue is that her allure skill tree was present from the start, the very moment you received her as a party member. Yet not once in the story, ON HER OWN FREE WILL, was she ever flirtatious or acted as such, because that wasn’t her character.
      Yeah, she gets brainwashed and becomes that, but compare that with everyone else and their character development, and she ends up being shafted character wise. And once she’s out of the brainwashing, boom, she’s back to being stoic and serious.
      And even then her “sisterly bodyguard” shtick doesn’t really get expanded on anyway. Veronica’s more of a bodyguard than Jade ever was.

    IMO the most important thing for a turn-based system is that it needs to have some degree of complexity/mechanics that force you to make decisions. One instance of this is Press Turn from SMT: I don't necessarily think that it's the absolute best or most strategic system, but it DOES make it at least a little bit more engaging because it means you have to think at least a little more about how to hit weaknesses to get more turns, and it makes the game more punishing if you mess up which in this case I think is a good thing.
    Bravely Default also had a very strong mechanic with Braving/Defaulting, meaning you could make strategic choices about how to manipulate your turns and it only got more interesting with the various jobs and abilities that give you even more possibilities/setups you can use. Sure it can lead to some absurdly broken stuff but rather than that being a detriment I find it very satisfying when your planning pays off.
    Valkyrie Profile is also a fantastic example because it kind of blurs the line, every character is mapped to a button and you have to press the buttons in the right order to create combos, break enemy guards, etc. It's really one of the most innovative battle systems out there and VP2 added even more to it.
    People will crucify me for this, but I don't think ATB has ever been a well-designed turn-based system. It doesn't ruin the games it's in by any means but IMO it contradicts what turn-based systems are supposed to be about, and it's just not very interesting or engaging in and of itself.

I also found adding a dash of Garlic powder to my scambled eggs sasoned with Dill gave it a nice kick in the pants.
    Later on I found out that Garlic is a naturally occuring antibiotic and is good for maintaining healthy bacteria in the body.
    it was also sort of How a litte game (at the time) By the name of Ark:survival evolved found its way into my Steam game library, I had origionally come across an abscure little dino survival game similar to the forest (which dips way too horror genre for my liking, not a fan o horror games or the genre in general) by the name of The Stomping Land, I don't remember fully how I found that one, But I'm a bit tentative with early acess games so I normally just wishlist them and wait several months until a sale or for the game to develop a bit more before diving into the Purchase and adding it into my library.
    sadly dor TSL that day never came, as time wore on the negative reviews revealed that It'd been abandoned and was left a buggy unfinished mess with the Dev disapearing into the ether of the internet, scroling my way back up to hit the 'remove from wishlist button I paused at the "games like this" scroll and there in the middle between two other dino games was Ark, it looked kind of interesting so I decided to have a peek at its store page, my interest shot up ten fold as I watched the trailers for the game. I HAD TO GET THIS. It'd had been out for almost a year I think, but when I took a dive into the world of Ark it was some time after Dire Wolves came out but before the dragon boss had been added. I had no idea how I missed it but this game was the closest thing to my happy place since Minecraft. I was hooked and hooked deep, I have admitedly put more than a thousand hours into this game, Ark was the Garlic of my videogame experience.

    I'll be *that guy* , and say there is very good reason games like Bravery series, Octopath and Persona are so damn successful.
    But before that, I want you think and tell me games other than those that were even remotely as commercially successful, let alone as popular. Outside handful of few titles from handful of developers, it's likely it'll be quite difficult.
    *Octopath* was heavily advertised by Nintendo as a solid RPG for Switch (along with Xenoblade 2), as they needed the a breakout titles from 1st and 3rd party for the system. It had a good amount of screen time on E3, where everyone from hardcore gamers who are 24/7 on the Internet to semi-casual gamers who have played old games and tuned in for new releases. And since it's artstyle was so striking, it generated immense curiosity and buzz. Nintendo marketed it like "water to thirsty turn-based RPG fans" and force them to buy a Switch (Software sells Hardware).
    *Persona 5* was similarly marketed by Sony. A reveal with an immensely striking artstyle. A cocktease of anticipation, during which a lot of word of mouth spread and Sony showcased it in every eveny possible, telling you that such an experience only be had on the PlayStation(R)4(TM).
    *Bravery series* is very interesting in that the reception was great, but initially it wasn't going as well, until it got the word-of-mouth spread and it got "discovered". 3DS has a very, very strong following, with equally strong word-of-mouth (and IMO switch is getting that network as well). Read the comments on mainstream sources at the times, everyone will say it was a "surprise hit".
    Now I'll talk about a little game called *Cosmic Star Heroine* and the 2 man studio, Zeboyd Games.
    One of the devs, Robert Boyd, is a huge, HUGE JRPG fantastic and has played (and has knowledge about) retro JRPGs of all shape and sizes. Their previous two games, Breath of Death VII and Cthulu Saves the World, are some of the parody games ever made.
    After 4 years since their last game, they release Cosmic Star Heroine, a love letter Genesis JRPGs, esp. Phantasy Star, but with turn based combat having a twist on Chrono Trigger's. It's the perfect retro JRPG with just the nostalgia and just the modernized values of today's games. This game has every hallmark of being a fan favorite among the turn based crowd.
    However, it didn't do anywhere close to that. They release on PC and PS4 in 2017, where the sales were meddling. It released on Switch and one would hope the Switch crowd would eat it up, but it was meddling again. Dev later said that any small mention or retweet from Nintendo would have massively pushed the game's sale and the Octopath/turn based crowd would be extremely pleased.
    TL;DR - *It doesn't matter how good your game is until a lots of MONEY is poured into it's MARKETING.*
    Now I know it's very unfair to compare an indie game to massive games made by giant publishers and endorsed by the damn platform holders, but *I think it's also unfair for the many niche games to get such poor commercial reception despite their quality.*
    So what can your, Luke aka Clemps, can do?
    You can have very big advantage as an Internet personality. We all can talk about controversies and negativity all the times, be it YT or Twitter. Rather than waste time and energy on them, we can give boost to genuine quality and goodness on the games and games community. Reasons behind corporate marketing are always cynical and money minded, but since we have no such obligation, we can promote and talk about stuff out of genuine love and passion.
    If you have read this far, you have my sincerest thanks. You have helped a lot of people in reinvigorating the love of games, and to see them beyond the surface, and for that I can't thank you enough.
    Have a great day. :)

      @Hemang Chauhan just to clarify, i think ff7 really was a great game.
      Didn`t know about the operation rainfall. Been checking it out now and IMO its not the same word of mouth as the one i mentioned, but more of an organized effort on the part of who knows how many people. Souls growth was more of a simple love story for the games that later became viral.

      Oh no no, FF7 is a good game, but for few people who haven't seen the depth the genre has to offer, aren't really correct when they say "IT'S THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME!!!"
      And for Operation Rainfall, it was a group of dedicated hardcore Japanese players who spread who awareness at the times when social media was at it's infancy. It's a combination of both word-of-mouth and a movement. Sometimes fans have to make the effort to bring good stuff to us.

    Thanks for bringing up that point about Jade, felt like a letdown that each character including Hendrik got well rounded ends to their arcs and she just kinda gets a fanservice power up and some doujin material without it really factoring into her character development. It also did annoy me that the Hero doesn't talk cuz it really took away from the emotional weight in certain scenes, and I felt like the final villain warranted a bit of further development as he just kinda waits for you the entire time. Nonetheless I would say this is my favorite game of the year and I'm looking forward to seeing where the series goes next. Excellent video as always Clemps you give us that good shit.

I love Final Fantasy but it tries WAY TOO HARD to be different and try to appeal to everyone (even those who don't even like it in the first place) many times it just doesn't work. That I love DQ. You get consistent games that spice things up by either adding new gameplay mechanics or changing the way the story is told or progressed through (example: DQIV, V and VII).

    Thanks for telling me about how they did the jrpg genre right, I was worried they wouldnt so I wasnt looking forward to it really. It's hard to find a game that gives me that feeling of mystery and discovery I loved in jrpgs. Games like links awakening, majoras mask, ff1-3 and more all made me fall in love with the FANTASY of the game. I'll be giving dragon age a shot

    I never would have given this game a thought because I personally don't care for the artstyle. But after watching your review and the cutscenes you showed, its evident that the real beauty is in the animations and polish the art gets.
    You have officially put this game on my radar.

    Is it just me or does the scene when the old guy sees the baby and lifts him up reminiscent of in Dragon ball when Son gohan finds Goku for the first time?

    Hey there, Daddy Clemps! Just wondering if you've ever played or heard of a ps2 action jrpg called Rouge Galaxy. I was a huge KH2 fan and after I beat it 10 times and took a break from it rouge Galaxy kinda scratched that itch for me. I have fond memories of it, but I can't remember if it was actually good or not. Anyway, I've said my piece, cheers Love, and thank you for another well made video. ♥️
